The PlayStation (officially abbreviated as PS and commonly known as the PS1 or its codename PSX) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released on 3 December 1994 in Japan, on 9 September 1995 in North America, on 29 September 1995 in Europe, and on 15 November 1995 in Australia, and was the first of the PlayStation lineup of video game consoles. As a fifth generation console, the PlayStation primarily competed with the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Saturn.

Brave Fencer Musashi doesn't get enough love. One of my favorite games growing up, it's a hidden classic gem by the legendary Squaresoft.
I don't think something can be hidden and classic. Those are pretty mutually exclusive terms.

Ahh the start of disc 3 is amazing. I love how it feels like you "won" but life carries on and you have to deal with the consequences and carry on with life.

Wow your list is really good. Final Fantasy VIII doesn't get enough love. Tekken 3 is also probably the best fighting game on the ps1

Tekken 3 is still a game I play to this day.
I still have the Tekken 1- 5 book which shows all the concept arts and characters from hand drawn to early 3D models.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver deserves a mention. One of my favorites.
It's a work of art in it's own right. The angular graphics and textures really fit into the gothic futurism vibe.

Yep, loved Soul Reaver back in '99. However, I went back to replay it a few years ago and the graphics just don't hold up. This game needs a Remaster or Remake.
I love it, to. But the puzzles would knock it off my list. But oh, that story and those performances are top tier indeed.

"Star Ocean Second Story" is an absolute PS1 classic.
I'm playing First Departure R. I hope Second story gets the same treatment on modern platforms
Star Ocean is such an underrated series!!!! I personally feel that SO should have gotten just as many games as Final Fantasy. It could have been even greater than FF.

Star ocean the second story was a way of life for many years, heck I still replay it once a year.
I have very fond memories of Metal Gear Solid. I remember my dad was stationed in Korea at the time, but before he left he warned my brother and I that we weren't going to have our playstation for awhile. The reason being was because he went to get it modded there because it was cheaper to do it there than it was here in the states back in the late 90s. My dad finished his job in Korea and when he came back he came with a stack of CD-Rs and cases along with them. One of them was Metal Gear Solid. My brother and I were blown away, and then we stayed over at our cousins house to show him the game and even he was like "whoa this is amazing!" Good times~

I cant count how many times I played Die Hard Trilogy. One of my favorites back then!
I still put the game into a cd player and listen to the soundtrack. Other great ones you can listen with a cd player are GTA, GTA London and Duke Nukem 3D for example.
Fear Effect. Syphon Filter. Medal of Honor. Granturismo 2. Great times.
Man. I remember Christmas 96. My sister and I got a PlayStation we played Tekken 2. I grew up with a Genesis so when I saw what the PlayStation could do I was forever changed.😎😉

For all my gamer friends around me at the time FFT was all the hype but for me it was FM3. Because Emma's storyline though.

Chrono Cross, Symphony of the Night, and my all time favorite Xenogears are in the list.

Some of my favorites back in the day, that you didn't already mention, were The Legend of Dragoon, Spyro 2, Breath of Fire III and IV as well as Star Ocean II, which is probably my most played game on that system.

Great video and great list! So many classics on that system. The PS1 ranks right up there with the SNES for me as the greatest console of all-time. Watching you go through your list and talk about the good times you had with those games and friends made me reminisce as well. So many great games and good times. Thanks!

I didn't care if I was in Heaven or Hell -- all I wanted was to kill my assassins. Sometimes you get what you wish for. The Necromancer Mortanius offered me a chance for vengeance. And like a fool, I jumped at his offer without considering the cost. Nothing is free, not even revenge.

I'm not even a gamer. the original playstation was the last time i was a gamer (ended up decided leveling up in real life was way more gratifying lol). but i keep coming back to your channel. your passionate about it, you have great stories that remind me of my own childhood. just cant say enough positive about your channel. keep up the great work.

When you don't have great graphics to rely upon, you have to tell a good story. And a major part of that is the music. Incredible work by the composers here.
@@ItsMeBarnaby For the time they were the best, agreed. I remember being amazed at one of the Tekkens actually looking 3d. However, how blocky the graphics were was obvious even then. Still not great graphics. Especially in comparison today. And gameplay was also often clunky.

Syphon Filter was a gem I remember fondly, the stealth and action was spot on. The resident evil games especially 1 and 2 were ahead of their time, but I remember Clock Tower being pretty tasty also.

One of my favorite PS1 games was Star Ocean: The Second Story. I seriously got lost in that world and narrative for many, many hours.
I have so many memories. My brother and my friends and I playing games on this console. The Resident Evil original series. Metal Gear. Crash Spyro. Tomba, NHL 98. Amazing console.
I may have mentioned before that I came into the PSone era very late - 2001. My exposure to the console (and the games surrounding it) was very limited but when I saw the opening cinematic for FF8 (via a bonus disc for FF7) I knew I had to play it. It took me 3 years to rinse the game inside and out and it still stands as my favourite Playstation 1 game to this day.

I really loved this video!! The PS1 era is one of the best eras of gaming and you did it justice! In particular, I found your descriptions of the music in the games to be most intriguing. I personally find that music is one of the most essential aspects of high quality gaming experiences. I can tell that you may have a similar outlook since you often mention game soundtracks in your videos. In saying this..
I have a really cool idea for a video! If possible, I think it would be really cool if you made a video speaking about your favorite game soundtracks and why (i.e., ambience, atmospheric, instrumentals, etc..) . I've always thought that you would have an interesting take on a topic like this.

You came into the scene at the peak off the system’s powers, I see.
Final Fantasy VII had a huge impact, not just on the RPG genre but also for the PlayStation as a new game console. I believe it shifted the balance of power at the time from Nintendo to Sony.

Great video as usual Happy Console gamer! I still collect games for the ps1/ps2, since their gaming catalogues are so vast and incredible! On my latest pick ups, I just managed to order a copy of ThunderForce VI for the Ps2, amazing game, cannot wait to put my hands on it! And I truly reccomend the adventure of Little Ralph, Panzer Bandit, Zanac X Zanac, Einhander, GDarius, Gradius Gaiden, from the Japanese library... but... I recently started replaying one of the most astonishing games for the Playstation, and still in these time and era, one of the pinnacles of the industry, due to its superb art presentation,great graphics, amazing music and audio quality, and cool narrative and gameplay, Metal Gear Solid !!!

Xenogears, MGS, FF Tactics, Suikoden 2, Castlevania SotN, Dino Crisis, Star Ocean 2, are just some of my favorites on PS1.
Along with most of the ones you presented, I also love Legend of Dragoon and Gex: Enter the Gecko. LoD is in a lot of ways just as good as FFVII, but EtG is a surprisingly fun and funny game, complete with all the cheesy one liners that you should find too silly to laugh at, but you find yourself chuckling over anyway. It’s also a great riff on several different TV/cinematic genre cliches, and the music is surprisingly good, too.
Xenogears was and still is the love of my life. What an amazing game

I loved Square Soft games so much, and there are some good hidden gems for the PS1. A couple that stand out are Brave Fencer Musashi, and Einhander. One is an action RPG, and the other is a side-scrolling shooter.

Some of my personal Playstation one favourites: Tekken 2 & 3, Croc Legend of the Gobbos and Croc 2, Medievil, Resident Evil, Star Wars Rebel Assault 2, Medal of Honour etc. Yep - I know some of the above are guilty pleasures 😄

I was playing through the first Croc again earlier this year. I thought it was quite good and I had a lot of fun. I originally had the Saturn version, but the camera was too zoomed in. The PS1 version is much more playable.
@@ravagingwolverine Glad to hear you enjoyed the replay. I think Croc is a highly underrated game franchise. The platforming is up there with the likes of Crash/Spyro.
Yeah, I didn't mind a bit of Croc. Rented it out once or twice back in the day. Wouldn't put it on my "top 10 platformers of all time" list but it is by no means a bad game.
I would add to the list Silent Hill, Wipeout and Breath of Fire IV.
Breath of Fire 4 is genuinely my favourite JRPG of all time. If the franchise wasn't dead I'd be jonesing for a remaster... as in, exactly the same game but with the 3D elements brushed up to meet the artists' original vision. Headcanon for me was that the demons and dragons were rendered that way to show they were truly from a different dimension.

Seeing Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, and Final Fantasy Tactics on this list made me so happy. Your top 10 is nearly identical to mine. I really loved Saga Frontier and my favorite survival horror of all time is Clock Tower.
Suikoden 1 and 2 are in my Top 10 PS1 games.

Great era. Wish Sony hadn't muffed the PS Classic so badly.
People should never have whined about what games were on it because they should have realized that the modding community would have all the PS1 games on it with extras. I guess I cannot complain because I picked up my classic from Best Buy Canada for $10 brand new instead of the launch price in Canada of $130.
The best era, we came from the 16bit/8 bit era of greatness and before the last era prior to online gaming taking off, long live the couch co-OP wars
It's an open source emulator, its meant for you to add roms.
Wish they would release a PSOne Mini with a different line up of games, and actually good emulation. Though I agree with the previous poster that the lineup doesn't matter much, as the best thing to do with these mini consoles is to hack them to add all the games you want.
Once flashed this is the best mini console out there!
1000% agree about Ridge Racer! It was the game that got me into racing games, I had the racing wheel/pedals and played for days! The music is still timeless!

I grew up with PS1 and N64 and love both, but the PS1 has aged so much better and I find the graphical style so charming these days.
There are also still amazing games being made in this graphical style such as Anodyne 2 and Banned Memories.

I liked the instant I saw your Ridge Racer Type 4 tshirt. I love that game!
FF Tactics has some of the best plot, characters, setting, and storyline in all of gaming but I think that's overshadowed by the fact that it's a tactical strategy game which is outside the norm for a Final Fantasy. It's a shame we were never given more games in the world of Ivalice with direct links to the War of the Lions / Ramza and Delita era.

I picked up a used, mint condition PS1 model 9001 the other week, and I must say, the system is generating so much nostalgia...it has its own gravitational force that keeps pulling me back.
