Ok this video unlocked a repressed memory! Does anyone remember lalaloopsy? And their movies and tv show it was so much fun! I still have the dolls after so many years I think their still continued idk 🤔
There also was a Japanese fashion doll line? I think they had a name with the word Tokyo in it? They were pretty similar to LaDeeDa and never spoke in their webisodes (there were some)... They had like colorful animal-themed hats and outfits, I think one had a whole panda or penguin themed outfit... Anyone remembers/knows what I'm talking about?
Barbie really stepped up their game. Now they have SO MANY different racial backgrounds, body types, and so much more. They even have “creatable world” which lets people make whatever styles, hair, and outfits they want. Absolutely no strictly “gendered” clothes. Y’all are geniuses Mattel
Barbie sales went up in 2019 and I think the diversity was one of the big drivers of that. Putting aside any discussions about the benefits of representation, looking at it from a child play standpoint... Kids often play with their dolls as different "characters". And it's much easier to have lots of different characters when all of your dolls look different! Doll lines and action figure lines that create established characters (as opposed to the blank slate nature of Barbie) understand this perfectly well and try to make each character look distinct.
I think creatable world is discontinued now :( cuz maybe girls wouldn't but them cuz they're not like pink and have dresses and boys you know even if a boy wanted to buy them parents would say NO boys can't play with dolls etc. Like literally let the kids play with the toys they wanna play with I really wish they weren't discontinued cuz they had amazing Fashions with real zippers and Jeans made of real denim and had pockets and they were fully articulated and gender neutral dolls were really a new thing in the doll Industry it was probably one of Mattel's best doll line EVER! 💖💖 BTW sorry this comment is too long 😅
@@timepasstubee Well, the doll industry is pretty tough to succeed in. A big problem a lot of doll lines have is that they don't really stand out from a play standpoint. Gender neutral dolls are a cool concept to progressive-minded adults, but it's not something that most kids really care about. From a child's perspective, they're just regular dolls with normal, boring clothes. They don't inspire interest or creative play. This is a problem that "wholesome", morally-drive doll lines typically run into.
MGA create Bratzillas and Novi Stars to compete with Monster High, and Moxie Teens to compete with Liv. And now after Monster High and Ever After High they are doing Rainbow High I think both Mattel and MGA are not so nice with other brands getting the same appreciation as their line’s

Nonononoonono you do not want something you like being rebooted monster high and Winx club were softly rebooted and look at them now imagine what a full reboot would look like
the growing up my scene dolls are literally a recreated version of the growing up Skipper from the 60s lol like Mattel couldn't think of an original idea?
plus, both were considered “scandalous” toys during the time of their releases...for obvious reasons. it’s weird that after how much controversy growing up skipper caused that they would recycle the idea
@@tornadodee148 it’s so weird why?? Like I don’t understand what’s wrong with puberty the doll could teach girls what happens when they are older or whatever.
I’m so glad someone’s talking about Liv dolls lol. I remember loving those dolls so much. I loved the complete customization and posability with the wig and the articulation.
I love my scene so much!! Even tho they are based of bratz, I love that they have amazing accessories and fashionable clothes just like bratz but they actually fit Barbie and the play sets and everything they did was superior!! Plus they were the first to be a little more diverse than Barbie they’re SO UNDERRATED.
Yessss, I also love that they have a stylised look with more "realistic" proportions (compared to Bratz massive heads and super thin limbs). They always sat as the perfect combination of both Bratz and Barbie's strengths to me.
@@bratzscene3131 I’m late but omg exactly!! Like my scene was the best de and yeah the good thing about not so popular dolls like my scene is that they aren’t that wanted by collectors therefore not as expensive as others
Here it is, Wild Childz was made in 2015 by a super small company. Almost all if not all of the art for Wild Childz is drawn by the artist for Howleen Wolf @Darkoart. They never ever made any dolls nor releasing merchandise. They seem to be making a come back as they’ve recently released face masks I believe at the end of last month or at the start of December and they’re still working on finding a good body for the dolls, they’re slowing rolling out new art.
@@ROBLOXMaskedSinger the wild childz artwork is NOT by darkoart, it is by @rondellmcleod on Instagram, he is the creator, the artist and is the owner of dreamcleod LLC, a toy company he freshly created and presumably will be manufacturing wild childz dolls under.
Jem and the holograms was underrated! Loved the comic books (a bit different than the tv show, but much more faithful than the movie), and I never heard the rumor that the band was originally an all-male group.
I feel like lammily wasn't created for children, but for their parents. I Don't know anyone who would've chosen lammily over Barbie when they were kids 🤡🤡
Pretty much. Body type aside, Lammily's whole schtick is being a "regular girl" who does wholesome things and wears regular clothes... But to a child, that's boring. What's more, Barbie has plenty of "wholesome", role modely things to choose from. I feel like a lot of the people who try to make "wholesome" alternative to Barbies don't understand the appeal of Barbie in the first place. People think that she's just pretty and likes fashion, but the big appeal of Barbie is that she's this blank slate who represents endless possibilities. She has so many different hobbies and careers to choose from, and the "wholesome" alternatives rarely offer anything that Barbie doesn't. Lammily I think had photographer, astronaut, doctor, and artist... But Barbie has all of those too and so much more. I'm also a little skeptical that kids really get all that insecure over the body types of their dolls. Most dolls are stylized, they're not supposed to look totally realistic. A doll with realistic proportions and no makeup is going to look boring and uninteresting to most kids.
@@StarlightPrism Yeah, I agree with that last part. When I was little, I never looked at a Barbie and thought “Why can’t I look like this?” I just thought “well, everyone looks different and that isn’t me, so it’s fine.”
@@nina9972 My thinking is that Barbie is intended to be an adult woman, so I really doubt that young girls are comparing themselves to her. Adults might do that, but not kids. Also, a lot of people don't realize this, but dolls often have weird proportions so they can be easier to play with, or look better with clothes on. For example, a fashion doll always needs to have a thigh gap so she can wear pants. And take into account the fact that the fabric used in doll clothes is not proportionately thin to match the size of the doll: it's regular fabric. If the doll has realistic proportions, the clothes will end up looking too bulky on her and it doesn't look good. (this is really easy to see with the neck: Barbie has a long neck because a realistically proportioned neck length would cause her neck to be covered up too much if she wears certain styles) Barbie's creator wanted it to be very clear that Barbie was an unambiguously young adult woman, so her figure needed to leave no question about it. Personally I think the outrage over Barbie is just a testament to the way society views the adult female form as inherently sexual. (especially certain body types) People view Barbie as sexualized because she has boobs and big hips... But lots of real women have boobs and big hips.
I remember La Dee Da. Their outfits were cute and they had super high quality hair. However something about their faces made me uncomfortable. They were also very thin, which I tend to not fuss about in other doll lines, however I felt La Dee Da pushed it a bit too far.
I have the genie one and honestly... They're super ugly. Their clothes are really fragile and their head are super squishy. They're just overall really weird
I agree. How about Mealroz instead of Melrose. I think she Pronounced all 4 of them wrong. Byjoe instead of Bijou. But the one that takes the cake is Tristain instead of Tristen...Lol😂🤣
Here's a fun fact!: My name is Katie, and my sister's name is Sophie and we both share names Liv dolls!! We both ended up buying the dolls with our names :)
My sister and I loved the Liv dolls and were sad when they were discontinued. I just wish they would have made boys too! Our boy barbies heads were so small in comparison hahaha
@@AllThingsFantasy there was a boy !! i just wish there were more boy dolls, maybe even ones that had interchangeable wigs like the girl dolls. if i was playing with my liv dolls, jake (the only male liv doll) had to play every male role in the same red tank top and swim shorts unless i wanted to break out my monster high dolls 😔 liv dolls had a lot of potential to me and it was sad to see them go
She wasn’t a bratz doll, it was just made by the same company that makes the bratz. And the reason why she didn’t approve them was because MGA wanted to rush them out for the summer of 2012 but Gaga wanted to wait until 2013 with the release of her album. So MGA decided to sue Gaga for 10million for intentionally delaying the approval of the dolls and for loss of revenue. Y’all can google the dolls, the prototypes look cute
It's sad that Moxie Girlz was cancelled, i still have one of them, i always thought she was so beautiful amd i ised to pretend she was the younger sister of one of my barbies 😂
Hearing about My Scene was such a nostalgia trip -- I collected a butt load of My Scene dolls back in the day, including the bling bling and masquerade ones shown in the video (had no idea that they were that expensive! I thought only the Winx dolls were expensive AF lol). They were my jam, back when as a young teen I loved Quizilla and Black Eyed Peas, and My Scene dolls fit into this aesthetic perfectly. I also preferred them to Bratz, because I thought that the Bratz dolls looked too grotesque (shiny lipgloss, everything exaggerated especially their heads and feet). My Scene was like a tamer, more refined version of that. I didn't know about the conscious decision to go from "Barbie" to sultry though -- I just thought they were different lines of dolls xD ironically I have ones from before and after. The before-look was actually really nice tbh, the blonde girl that I have from the pre-sultry era has a great, wide smile and squarish head, looks a lot like Margot Robbie :D My favorites were Chelsea (being a brunette) and Nolee (being more punk than the others) -- I never bought the "moving faces" or puberty dolls that appeared briefly in the video though (they were a bit too odd for me xDD). But what wasn't shown in the video were the swappable heads and male lines. There was a popular line involving a trio of looks for each of the main girls: one was a smart college/office look, one a complex night-life look, and one an every-day/youthful look. And each look was accompanied by a separate /head/ (or rather, bust). A button on the back of the doll let you swap heads, and at the time I thought this was little novelty was absolutely revolutionary. But I don't think I've seen it on dolls since. It was definitely a page taken from the book of action figures, where swapping limbs and heads is par for the course, but it was pretty innovative thing to give to a Barbie-like fashion line. And then there was the male line of dolls, which were /highly/ sought after because at the time, they were the hottest male fashion dolls out there. A big problem with Ken was his goofy smile, thick neck, and short out-of-fashion haircuts. Also, Ken dolls were well known for a long time to feature far less articulation than Barbie -- the Ken dolls that I have from the 90's and 2000's barely bend in the knee, and their arms are rigid (either straight or at an angle). The My Scene guys by comparison looked like they came straight out of a diverse boyband: fashionable hairdos, male jewelry, a lot of articulation, accurately representing popular male fashions (especially the skater style). The two that I have look like Archie and Jughead from Riverdale, if Archie had dirty blonde hair instead of red, and Jughead was a tad stockier. There was also My Scene furniture (and I think even vehicles and a party van?). At any rate, a huge part of the appeal of My Scene was that it reflected all the cool grown-ups that our magazines and TV shows bombarded us with while growing up. Of course there were adult elements (hell, at some point or other I got some sexy lingerie and a bedroom set for my My Scene dolls), that was integral in the aesthetic. Buuut I think that more than parents being upset with the ostensible sexiness of it all, the My Scene fans much like myself had simply grown up by 2014. Styles had changed. The skater look was already out for several years, and the sultry urban street-chic style was no longer in vogue either. We lost interest, no new fans were coming in anymore, so My Scene lost customers. It's the same story with other doll lines that tapped into a novelty or aesthetic particular to an era, until it petered out: Polly Pocket, Barbie's knock-off Not-Scooby-Doo Mystery Gang line (which was freaking awesome btw), those articulated and non-curvy explorer dolls (they all had cool occupations like scuba diver, survivalist,...), Barbie's outlandish collapsible vehicles (like a party plane and a disco van -- the latter of which I used to own, it was a tour van that turned into a night club). Today it's stuff like Monster High and Ever After, heavily influenced by the popularity of anime and the "morbid but cute" aesthetic. Tomorrow it's bound to be something else!
Actually since both Monster High and Ever After High got discontinued, and now Lol Surprise and Rainbow High are dominated the doll world i would say we are going back to more trend based doll lines
In regards to Jem vs Barbie, the whole ‘which doll was released first?’ issue was already clarified in one of the ‘Toys That Made Us’ episodes on netflix .The true story is: Mattel heard that Hasbro was going to release the Jem doll line and they quickly came out with Barbie and The Rockers dolls before the Jem dolls were launched.
Does anybody remember Harumika dolls? They were manikins that you could punch different fabrics into the back of and create your own fashions I just feel like I never hear about it
Liv dolls were one of my favorites as a kid. I loved how you could change their hair and stuff. My mom thought it was kinda creepy, them and the original Barbie fashionistas where you could take their heads off
I was so obsessed with my Moxie Girls dolls!! I was never allowed Bratz as a kid so they were the closest I could get without stealing actual Bratz dolls from my friends lmao, and that theme tune from the advert was sooo catchy ahaha
Does anyone else remember once upon a zombie? I remember watching the three episodes that were released on youtube, reading the book and really wanting the dolls! They had a pretty original concept even if they were only supposed to be mh/eah competitors and I am sad that the line got cancelled considering they confirmed about 15 characters to get dolls that ended up never being released
i still have my india one, pink lollipop one, pineapple one, and the purple girl. i dont understand why they discontinued them -- they were so cute and perfectly fine. the clothes and factory paint were fantastic and they even had poc characters ! honestly, what the hell.
I am from europe and I remember Madison being Westley. Usually the names are changed because legal reasons, for example Moana (Disney) in Spain is Vaiana because a perfume was called like the Internacional name of the princess. Sometimes (probably this time) names are changed to make them look more near to our culture, in many European countries Aisha (winx club) is called Layla (Eventhough Winx is an italian production), maybe that happened to Madison. I can not clarify anything, but, that can be one option. Great video Clawdeena💖💖💖

When I say I got chills seeing the Jem dolls I got CHILLS! My mom's an 80s baby and she loved Jem and the Holigrams and we watched it together when I was younger. I remember my mom gave me hers to play with. I cannot remember what happened to her though.
Personally to me, Lammily looks nothing like the "average" 19 year woman. Edit: I'm not body shaming the woman that Lamily is based on, I'm just pointing out that most 19 year olds don't look like she does.
im a 2008 child, yet netflix still managed to bless me with Jem, and im so glad you mentioned her! i had forgotten about her for so long but now that you mentioned her i have my tiny memories of her back in my head!
Yeah, unfortunately the line was discontinued. Im not sure why, but only 3 episodes into the series and while many dolls were in the prototype stage, it was discontinued. It really sucks, after Alice was produced there was going to be Tinker Bell, Pocahontas, The Prince and more!! I would've killed to see them!!
I WOULD like you to tell us more about Wild Childz. I remember seeing the designs back in the day and I thought it was gonna be a doll line to be released soon, but then time went by and I never heard from them again. Only recently, actually, I wondered what happened to them 😮

I Want To Know More About Wild Child Dolls
Here it is, Wild Childz was made in 2015 by a super small company. Almost all if not all of the art for Wild Childz is drawn by the artist for Howleen Wolf @Darkoart. They never ever made any dolls nor releasing merchandise. They seem to be making a come back as they’ve recently released face masks I believe at the end of last month or at the start of December and they’re still working on finding a good body for the dolls, they’re slowing rolling out new art.
The inner furry in me would’ve loved Wild Child as a kid. At least I was able to get Pinkie Cooper
@@dimini4267 I Loved And Still To This Day Love Pinkie Cooper

Jem and the holograms was underrated! Loved the comic books (a bit different than the tv show, but much more faithful than the movie), and I never heard the rumor that the band was originally an all-male group.
I had mostly myscene dolls.
Now everyone looks like them, haha
@@StarlightPrism Yeah it’s a fashion doll, not a doppelgänger.
I feel like if the whole campaign wasn't bluntly dissing Barbie and she had better articulation and style choices they would have stuck around longer
I remember La Dee Da. Their outfits were cute and they had super high quality hair. However something about their faces made me uncomfortable. They were also very thin, which I tend to not fuss about in other doll lines, however I felt La Dee Da pushed it a bit too far.
No I agree, they are like way too thin stylistically and their heads are way too big. I was turned off by it too and I normally don't care.
I have the genie one and honestly... They're super ugly. Their clothes are really fragile and their head are super squishy. They're just overall really weird
It's the eyes. The eye positioning/where they're looking are what's wrong with their faces.
Half of my childhood in one video this hit me so hard

The way Arizona was pronounced, couldn't help but laugh 😂
I agree. How about Mealroz instead of Melrose. I think she Pronounced all 4 of them wrong. Byjoe instead of Bijou. But the one that takes the cake is Tristain instead of Tristen...Lol😂🤣

@@bellagarcia9514 I know I'm talking about in 2011 bratz and gaga were working on a gaga doll

The before-look was actually really nice tbh, the blonde girl that I have from the pre-sultry era has a great, wide smile and squarish head, looks a lot like Margot Robbie :D
My favorites were Chelsea (being a brunette) and Nolee (being more punk than the others) -- I never bought the "moving faces" or puberty dolls that appeared briefly in the video though (they were a bit too odd for me xDD).
Jem was my obsession! I even named a dog after her.
Novi Stars is literally so iconic like.....
They should bring back the Novi Stars and release the mummy, dragon, and mermaid on the shelves
