Man, all mirrorless cameras are so good in 2020, but if I were to start over this year, I would go all Sony for photo (A7RIII for landscapes) and video (A7SIII). The GM lenses and output are so amazing and now with the A7SIII, it seems like all features anyone could practically use are there.

great video, Gordon. Sorry if this is out of place... but something I'm curious about that no one seems to care to answer is how the R5 performs in 10 bit 1080p video. Reasoning: A couple vloggers sold their 1dxs in place for the 1080 EOS R. Ok, so the 1080 is 10 bit and 60FPS in the EOS R5 (a step up from the R)...Yet no one is considering this as an upgrade from the R.... I'm wondering if that would decrease chances of overheating. Thanks again for an in depth video!
As a sony shooter.. I had a huge jump from the A7 to the A7riii recently and I have to say that they are so damn good. Everyone screams about color science vs canon but I truly think that with the a7siii it's really up there with canon if not better than them.

Another thought. This A7Siii announcement will rapidly halt sales of the other Alpha7 models in their tracks. The fully articulated touch screen and a decent menu is a must in this competitive segment, and I'm amazed Sony has got away without offering them for so long.
Best PRACTICAL review of the A7S3 and I've watched a lot of them! Thanks for all the great footage showing what it can do, e.g. birds in flight etc. The A7S3 seems to pair really well with the Sony 24-70mm G-Master, looks like you used that for a lot of the shots?
Kudos to Sony, if I were primarily a video shooter this A7SIII would be hard to resist. That it can support dual SD/dual CF Express type A is very interesting and very unique. If you don't need to shoot 8K there simply isn't anything better out there that comes close.
Not only does the siii record much longer than the R5 at 4K 120fps.... The quality is great on the siii (one to one pixel), and the R5 is horrendous pixel binned footage.
One thing I really appreciate about the new Sony is that it provides a clear differentiation from the Canon cameras regarding video vs stills. I am 95% interested in stills photography. It does annoy me how many of the UA-cam reviewing fraternity focus way too heavily on the video side (present company excepted). Of course, UA-camrs are video producers so that's natural, but I feel it skews many 'camera' reviews away from my interests. For this 'round' though it's clear to see who is drawn to what and why. Congratulations to Sony, they've produced a stunning video machine - which is not for me.
Great review as always Gordon. Any idea how the stills dynamic range compares to the R5? While it's video oriented, it can be very appealing to stills as well in it's unique way (ISO performance). Will you be providing this info in coming videos?
Active steady shot is not digital ...... the crop is to allow greater movement of the sensor in IBIS .... where the lens mount would otherwise shield the corners of the image ...... great review thanks !!
Hi Gordon, great review. I especially liked that you included a lot of 1080P samples, -> left a sub. Amazing shots of the seagulls as well. What is your experience in regards of 1080P quality, especially compared to the new Canons and the Pansonic? As far as I could tell from the initial blend between 1080P and 4k at the beach it looks to be quite mushy (typical Sony you could say). Do you think the Canons / Panasonic would be better for 1080P60?
The bad news is I can't comment definitely YET, but the good news is I've filmed test charts in all modes with all the cameras and HOPE to include them in a big video comparison coming soon! So much too work though at the moment though...
They have to give a optional update for the menus at least for the a9 II and a7r IV. For the new A6000 series and the latest rx100 it wouldn't hurt either.
Great review! Amazing to see how the ISO ranges perform these days, they were practically useless at anything over 800 when I first bought a digital camera. One thing I do wonder about is do Canon, Nikon and Sony use different temperatures when they decide to force a shutdown? Imagine if Canon shut their cameras off at 80C but Sony shut theirs down at 98C, or the other way round. It would greatly affect the life of the cameras depending upon the thermal protection. (Do any manufacturers state the shut down temperature?)
You can speed up the R5 cooling process - just get an ice chest cooler. Canon should start making them. Imagine a fancy chest cooler with a Canon logo, red edges (only for the L-series coolers), probably some ice stabilization, etc...

Active stabalisation worked very well in 1080 but in 4K was a bit twitchy. Dan Watson did a side by side with the R6 the canon did seem to do better without the spasmodic twitches the Sony seems to have.
Outstanding review as always, Gordon. I do wish someone would have put this through the paces for Astrophotography. Doesn't seem like anyone hit on that despite the fact that the A7S series has been highly favored in the Astro community.

Greatest review of a7s3 out there.. Seriously i was fed up with less informative reviews of everyone till now.. Thank you Gordon. But i think sony should combine A9 & A7s series & make the World's best only camera needed. As i don't think it'll be that difficult to make almost sensitive 20mp sensor (hybrid of a7s3 & a9mk2)
ooooh HEIF!! hopefuly goes through A7RIV soon with the new menu and smaller RAW files 🙂 awesome review Gordon! there is something beside the AF iluminator, would you know what it is for?
I'll definitely get an a7S III after I save up enough money in these tough, coronavirus times. But I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with SteadyShot (even active mode) when in 4K. I think it did a little better in 1080p? Maybe it was the different area you were walking, or how tired you were getting? Many variables to consider.
All other brands use CF express Type B. It is the original type, the fastest type, the most used type. Sony decided they wanted their own proprietary/exclusive memory, so started to use Type A, they are the only ones. Typical for Sony, not wanting to use industry standards, but can charge more for their own.
Does the a7s iii have an option to crop in during 1080p filming? Perhaps a custom button like the crop mode on the last generation? Would be GREAT to use a 24-70mm to get a closer shot while filming live
Hi Gordon, we all know it is exciting to have so many full frame cameras pushing out. But I am just curious, will you be able to finish the in depth review for EM1 Mk3? Thx!
@@cameralabs it looks good...I don't think it's quite at the level of the GH5, which is a wee bit disappointing. Still, it ticks so many boxes. Great review by the way.
@@cameralabs Ah that makes sense. I found the GH5 perfect for throwaway travel documenting, but just miss that low light ability and shallow depth of field. So torn now. Wait for GH6 or sell all M43 and embrace FF :)
Do you think the 12MP resolution brings enough of an improvement in low light/high ISO? Does it make that much difference compared to Sony's 24MP cameras?
Love this camera, however photography is most important to me. Maybe someday I'll think of this, but as of now it really makes me want them to announce the a7iv!!!
For someone like le, new to Sony and not very well versed in technical aspects of Photography or Videography, this is a great video to get a quick impression of whether the AS7III is worth considering. I don't understand the difference between the AS7III and the A7SIII yet, but I will search through your other videos to understand the difference between the regular and the S series. I will also see if bird eye autofocus is likely to come in a firmware update or whether that needs to wait for another model. In the meantime, liked and subbed. Greetz from France and thank you.
No, I can't see any boost in detail in 4k from 1080 and I have a 4k monitor, which gives me food for thought: Is 4k so big an improvement? In my camera it is quite big (XT3) but in better cameras like this one, I'm not sure.
great work yet again gordon! thanks so much! so 2hr 28min til the battery went out in 4k 24p.. if i had a battery hooked up, do you think it would take it til the battery runs out i.e. hours and hours? i guess its hard to tell without testing! could be a good cam for shooting events though i guess!
@@cameralabs thanks gordon, sorry, i wasnt clear but you guessed correctly that i meant usb battery. i will give it a test if and when i get the camera! thanks again
Whats cards do you recommend for the camera? I read in your blog that most fast cards (v90?) will work with all shooting modes? So I don't need to buy the CF express type A???
@@ThomazMartinez hmmm, good point. I think it may be possible on SD if you record it via S&Q mode as it maintains the quality with a lower bit rate due to the recording speed.
@@cameralabs I personally think the R5 content is going to pointless after some time.. Canon is going to sink with the Panasonic S1H and Sony A7siii features... That overheating issue is a deal-breaker for 90% of people.. I would REALLY REALLY love to see you do a side by side of the 2 cameras that are now known to be the best in class. The Sony A7siii and the Panasonic S1H.. Please Please Please! lol
This is the best review out there so far! I am looking very much forward to your detailled comparison videos. While I find the new Canons quite compelling (I am a former Canon user that now has a Sony), I like the specialized approach of this camera. And Sony still seems to be the only company that gets the battery life of their full-frame cameras in order.
Is the video quality of the A7S iii @4k 120fps, as good as the video quality of the the Canon EOS R6 @4k 60fps?? I know, you said, you'll be doing another video for that, but I got curious!!
Although we are yet to see the final production version as of now, it seems as if Sony made a reliable 4K camera as a tool in motion. If a camera overheats, it is not a practical tool. Your in-depth review highlights the wow factor with a finger-sticking-out skit at 06:45. Thank you for the great video.
IBIS is still way behind rivals. Active mode in 1080p mode looks fine, better than all other Sony cameras but 4K still isn't good (with active mode). Saying that, Sony says there is additional crop in Active mode and it is still mechanical IBIS. If this is right, does it mean that Sony would have better IBIS if the mount was bigger? Additional crop factor means that the system doesn't see corners and edges of the sensor which automatically means "pseudo-larger" mount.
Fantastic review as always Gordon. Definitely the best choice for someone who primarily does video. I both film & photograph weddings, so personally sticking with the R5 (and suspect I'll keep it in the oversampled, non-heat-affected 4k crop mode. Considering all the cinema cams I have, an S35 fov doesn't seem like much of a compromise for oversampled 4k 10bit 4:2:2). Do you think Canon will put things like Clog3, unlimited record times, and dual slot recording in the R5 via firmware to compete with the A7sIII, or do you think an RF cinema cam (C100 III/R100) around the $4k-5K mark is in the pipeline?
I’m more in still photography and want that as 7M4 with that new 7S3 sensor its colour science in 24 megapixel and a firmware upgrade supporting lossless compressed ARW. And the sensor should be stacked like 9 and 9M2 and RX100 (starting M5, as far as I can remember)
In theory I find HEIF pretty exciting. I’d love to be able to shoot jpeg but without losing the increased dynamic range of RAW. I’d think this would be particularly valuable for Fuji since many people enjoy the simplicity of shooting with their color profiles. I find it more like shooting on film in the sense that you make your choices ahead of time instead of after shooting. It does get tiring having to edit RAW photos in Lightroom instead of just having great photos out of camera. But currently it seems silly to shoot jpeg when you’re throwing out so much info.
How do you think the IBIS from this camera compares with the G9? I believe the IBIS from the G9 is better but with your expertise and experiencing handling both cameras, is G9 so much better than the sony IBIS? I wanna avoid the heavy gimbal and I've been thinking about buying a G9 mainly for that reason, however how to agree the 4k 120, flip screen and lowlight is almost making me change my mind, just wanna be convinced that the IBIS is good enough for handheld video... By the way, do you that we'll have a GH6 released this year? great video mate! cheers

Don't joke, the seagull-eye-detect is v impressive on the Canons and I'll be able to show it soon!

ooooh HEIF!! hopefuly goes through A7RIV soon with the new menu and smaller RAW files 🙂 awesome review Gordon! there is something beside the AF iluminator, would you know what it is for?
Yes, I think that's the new WB IR sensor
Cool thats something new, thanks 🙂
Love how thorough your reviews are
Thankyou, it's a lot of work, but I hope worth it. Just a bit depressing when I don't get as many views as less thorough reviews.
Great review Gordon. I will get the A7SIII here in Chile as soon as possible on product availability here.
All other brands use CF express Type B. It is the original type, the fastest type, the most used type. Sony decided they wanted their own proprietary/exclusive memory, so started to use Type A, they are the only ones. Typical for Sony, not wanting to use industry standards, but can charge more for their own.
Thanks for this excellent review. Does this camera have a hi-res mode for stills?
Nope, it's 12mp max.
Do you think they’ll add DCI 4K via firmware? They have enough pixels for it and it seems like a glaring omission compared to some of its competitors
Does the a7s iii have an option to crop in during 1080p filming? Perhaps a custom button like the crop mode on the last generation? Would be GREAT to use a 24-70mm to get a closer shot while filming live
What are your thoughts about the motion cadence of this camera? It seems very jittery and artificial looking to me
Hi Gordon, we all know it is exciting to have so many full frame cameras pushing out. But I am just curious, will you be able to finish the in depth review for EM1 Mk3? Thx!
Not now.
Question:
Does the Eye-AF work in slow-no 120? Or does it default back to general subject tracking like the Sony a7iii?
Great question - I just tried it and YES it does work.
Gordon Laing thank you so much!
How does the IBIS compare to say, the GH5?
I included lots of examples of it working, let me know what you think vs GH5.
@@cameralabs it looks good...I don't think it's quite at the level of the GH5, which is a wee bit disappointing. Still, it ticks so many boxes. Great review by the way.
@@cahal thanks! It's v hard for full-frame to match the IBIS of smaller formats, one of benefits of M43
@@cameralabs Ah that makes sense. I found the GH5 perfect for throwaway travel documenting, but just miss that low light ability and shallow depth of field. So torn now. Wait for GH6 or sell all M43 and embrace FF :)
Seems like the R5 served as a benchmark for the SIII, it makes it look so much better
Do you think the 12MP resolution brings enough of an improvement in low light/high ISO? Does it make that much difference compared to Sony's 24MP cameras?
It does for video yes, but have a look at my examples and tell me what you think!
Thanks for info !!👍
Very informative. Looking forward to the follow up comparisons
As usual, one if not the best review on UA-cam, thanks a lot Gordon ! 🙂
Thankyou!
Merci beaucoups!
@@cameralabs De rien Gordon. Keep making them videos...
You could power it over USB for longer times - it may overheat eventually, but I think you could get longer in4k 24p.
@@cameralabs thanks gordon, sorry, i wasnt clear but you guessed correctly that i meant usb battery. i will give it a test if and when i get the camera! thanks again
Has this camera any features for shooting anamorphic?
Whats cards do you recommend for the camera? I read in your blog that most fast cards (v90?) will work with all shooting modes? So I don't need to buy the CF express type A???
Lastly, does the A7s3 have any type of S35 crop mode like other Sony Full Frame? I imagine not in 4K, but what about in 1080?
Another solid review. Got a feeling Brighton Pier opened up specifically because they wanted to be featured in another vid from Camera Labs :)
Ha ha! It's nice to be back on it again!
Omg youre the guy from cameralabs! I remember you reviewing Sony A700 and Canon 40D lol
I've done a few things inbetween too, but glad you found me again! Check out some of my other recent videos!
Any idea if there will be a firmware update for the A7r4 menu systems?
I wish... but who knows?
Gordon, fantastic review! Any chance you can upload some of those 4K clips to Vimeo for download purposes? Thanks much!
Good review impressed, but noticed that on XAVC-I there was no 4k 120p option?
That's correct, 4k 120 is only available in XAVC S and XAVC HS.
@@cameralabs I think it's because you where using SD
@@ThomazMartinez hmmm, good point. I think it may be possible on SD if you record it via S&Q mode as it maintains the quality with a lower bit rate due to the recording speed.
hey gordon,
does the active steady shot crop decrease image quality?
No, there's enough pixels for it to deploy it without reduction in quality. But not in 4k 120.
I need to work harder to be able to afford this camera. Thanks for the thorough information.
Did you meet up with Philip Bloom to shoot at Brighton?
Bigger question: Is Brighton the only beach in the UK worth shooting?!
Ha ha, No and Yes! He must have been there the same time as me, but we were on opposite sides of the pier!
@@cameralabs I guess you guys were socially distanced.
I'm sorry for that pun.
What's the room temperature when you tested the 4k recording maximum time on one battery / one memory card ?
Any chance we can get a link to download some of the direct-recorded
camera footage to see how our computers can handle it?
I'll try to upload some clips later this week - you'll be able to access them via my A7S III review at www.cameralabs.com/sony-a7s-iii-review/
Good news, I've added some clips to download here: www.cameralabs.com/sony-a7s-iii-review/
when are you going to post the comparison Video Im really interested in seeing this camera vs the Panasonic S1H
I'm working on several things at once - lots of R5 and R6 content to come too
@@cameralabs I personally think the R5 content is going to pointless after some time.. Please Please Please! lol
@@emmanuel1737 I filmed video and took stills and did overheating tests with the A7S III, S1H, R5 and R6, so I'll be able to compare them all.
What about a OVERGEATING test at 4k 60 fps?
This is the best review out there so far! I am looking very much forward to your detailled comparison videos.
While I find the new Canons quite compelling (I am a former Canon user that now has a Sony), I like the specialized approach of this camera. And Sony still seems to be the only company that gets the battery life of their full-frame cameras in order.
Yes, their battery is amazing...
Why do you use xavcs 8bit 4:2:0 instead of all intra?
Is the video quality of the A7S iii @4k 120fps, as good as the video quality of the the Canon EOS R6 @4k 60fps?? I know, you said, you'll be doing another video for that, but I got curious!!
Although we are yet to see the final production version as of now, it seems as if Sony made a reliable 4K camera as a tool in motion. If a camera overheats, it is not a practical tool. Your in-depth review highlights the wow factor with a finger-sticking-out skit at 06:45. Thank you for the great video.
You're welcome!
Great review Gordon, looks like a cool camera with sensible upgrades, I'm a fan.
I think it's wobbling a bit. Great camera for video especially for low light and night time shooting. I'm waiting for Panasonic GH6.
Great Video Gordon. Very Thorough and informative!!!
Thanks!
I don't think Canon could add some of those things as they may be hardware dependant.
Amazing camera mate ..nice review too
Thanks!
Hey Gordon... have u tried the sony lut from truecolorlab.com yet?
Hope to see you make IQ comparison with competitors, ie. pockets, S1H, even non-competitors filming cameras such as C300, RED or Alexa.
Gordon is the 1080p @ 60fps available in All-I? Thanks.
I don't recall all the modes as there's so many variations - your best bet is to check Sony's website specs.
That's definitely the theory behind HEIF... Hopefully it'll deliver!
By the way, do you that we'll have a GH6 released this year? great video mate! cheers
The IBIS on smaller sensor bodies is typically better, which is why M43 generally wins IBIS tests.
@@cameralabs thanks for the reply mate!
how big is the screen?? looks kinda small
