I feel like the R6 is 90% of the R5 at 60% of the cost! And the final 10% that the R5 provides are total luxuries that I’m more than happy to live without until prices drop or lookout used. Can’t wait for an R6!

Gordon, thank you for your brilliant review.
As always concise, accurate & enjoyable.
There is however one issue I wish your opinion off. That of these darn flippy flappy LCD's instead of a "Tilt" LCD.
Yes for UA-cam posers flippy screens are handy, but for majority of us who are usually 'behind' the camera they are so awkward to use as well as being at risk of damage sticking out the side like that.
Doubtless you used the flippy LCD for your eye focus shots in your above review,.
Then I'll bet the LCD spent the rest of it's time tucked into the back of the camera, i.e. 99.99% of the time.
Tilt LCDs are so much easier to deploy for overhead/low shots, tilt, aim, fire, tilt back, finish.
So if you wanted a high or low shot with your flippy LCD camera, you have to flip the LCD out twist it, twist it back because you went the wrong way, then spend forever getting your shot lined up because the LCD is now way off the mid line axis of your camera and you can't quite get the angle of the flippy LCD right
In a sense the worst sort of parallax error, stuff that we thought died with rangefinder vewfinders...
      Cheers

Amazing review, do you think if you hook up a sigma 18 35 on the R6 in aps c mode that you will lose any visible quality for UHD recording? What about IBIS on a gimbal will that help or fight against each other? Do you know if there is any digital zoom option in video mode in 25 fps?

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 4 роки тому +1

The 5 stop, in body stabilization works with any lens, even third party. As to whether it works in conjunction with EF lenses attached via adapter? Great question. I bet they do. All the electronics are connected. But it's something to look at when the tests start rolling in.

Great preview! Canon used to cripple the lower end full frame camera to push buyers towards the higher end. But they did things well this time. I'd say the R6 is the perfect camera for the advanced enthusiast. No unneeded high end video features and resolution, but the basic strong specs remain. And the smaller and lower res screen and evf help in giving better battery performance while still giving clear and comfortable view of the world. I'd definitely be getting one in a year's time tops.

The built-in IS with the IS of the slower 24-105 lens, make it now even useable in low light. This makes those slow lenses literally practical for use in low light when shooting at the longer focal lengths. It's a big advantage for photographers on a budget. I do hope that the lower MP sensor means even better low-light performance - well done Canon!

Certainly hasn't made my decision on what model to save for any easier!
I upgraded from a 5D MK1 to an EOS R last year and it's been a blast, really excited by these new cameras. However going from the EOS R to EOS R6 sees a significant drop in megapixel count :( I may just need to save for the R6 and disregard any trade in value I could get for the R and keep it around for when I need those extra megapixels. (There's no way I can afford the R5 without selling a lot of stuff.)

Hi Gordon, great reviews, thanks so much. Just to mention, at 5 min 48 sec you say "Sadly, unlike the R5 though, its not possible to record video to both cards simultaneously". I purchased the R5 on the basis it would record video to both cards but when both cards are inserted, it will only record to the CF Express and not the SD, except for 8k RAW where it writes an MP4 proxy to the SD card. This is Canon not disclosing fully the capability of the R5 for video recording and even the operations manual gives the impression that both cards can be written to. It gives this impression by stating the files that can not be recorded to SD Cards (RAW / high frame rates / 4k All-i) Nowhere in the ops manual does it say "Video recording is not possible to dual cards except for 8kRAW + MP4 to the SD". I will keep this camera for stills (amazing!) but my video upgrade will be the Sony A7sii as I need the redundancy of dual card recording. Cheers.

I want to know how good the Dynamic Range is. When shooting with my Nikon D7100 DSLR, some wide-angle shots I just prefer shooting with my phone as I get exactly what I see, no matter what's the lighting condition is. The image processing of high-end phones is just incredible. When I was in Japan, the shots that I was most proud of are ones captured using my OnePlus 6 phone, even with post-processing RAW of my Nikon, I just couldn't get to that amazing dynamic range and color reproduction of my phone. Maybe I need a newer DSLR and I'm sure modern sensors have improved on that. I really want the R5 or R6. It's over my budget but maybe someday. Waiting for more detailed analysis Gordon, thanks so much. I always prefer your videos, they are the most professional without unnecessary "entertainment show" and why I always watch your videos from start to finish. Thank you.

Gordon, does the EOS R6 have any visual aid in the viewfinder during manual focus? Perhaps something similar to Leica M3's split image in its viewfinder?

This is probably a stupid question but is 20mp on a FF Camera the same resolution as 20mp on APS-C? I've owned a 700D (my first DSLR) and now own an 80D, so both APS-C and 18mp and 24mp respectively. I'm looking to upgrade to FF.

Does the R6 have a waveform or just histogram?

Sadly just a histogram, but at least there's zebras now too

    I have a few questions.
    1. Will the AF work well in video with adapted EF lenses
    2. Is there an internal video proxy option like the A7III (that's a deal breaker for me, it's so useful
    3. When will there be stock available?
    Thanks

I really like the feature set. But... there are questions I need to have answered before purchasing.
#1: Is it going to suffer from heat issues at 4K 30p?
#2: Is Canon actually going to implement ALL-I compression through a software update? Seems they mentioned it but nothing specific.
Also, hoping for some decent more budget friendly lenses from Sigma and Tamron coming to the RF in the near future.

Thanks for another helpful review. Looks like a great all-rounder, especially with IBIS and improved AF. For movie shooting though I see no ALL-I option in those menus - or true 24p (23.98 only?) If the rolling shutter proves as bad as the 1DXIII then I question whether there's enough for me to upgrade from my R Classic for video, especially as I shoot mostly 1080p - plus my iMac is going to struggle with the R6's H265 files... Will wait to see footage before deciding.

Thanks Gordon! I'm seeing to hear different things about Dual card slot for recording video. Does the R5 definitely offer this? and does the R6 not offer it at all? Thanks!

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 роки тому

The R6 definitely does NOT offer dual card slot for video according to Canon. The R5 does, but there are some weird combinations I've not got to the bottom of yet. But both will record stills to both cards of course.

Just checked spec sheet and it says with high speed UHS-II cards it will shoot upto 240 RAW photos. Somehow it feels like Canon has made a 1Dx Mk3 for masses.

Which is why they delay the R6 for the end of August. They wanted to sell this camera AFTER the Olympics, so photographers there didn't have to go cheap, and buy the 1DxMkIII instead. The R5 is expected a month earlier.

@@EugeniaLoli But the Olympics have been moved to 2021, and either way pro-sports guys will still buy the 1dx-III as the optical viewfinder gives them better reaction times for shooting.

I think the R6 was what we expected from a 5D Mark IV replacement, for the most part. The R5 to me, would've been close to, if not, the perfect camera to replace the 1DX series. I pre-ordered the R5 to replace my 5D Mark IV as my main camera for stills that shoots great video. I went for the R5 simply because I'm hoping to be able to hold out from replacing my camera again for a long time. I purchased the 5D Mark IV on launch, and though competition has released cameras with video features that lead me to purchase cameras outside of Canon in the meantime, I'm hoping the R5 can stop me from doing that for a long time. :-) Thanks Gordon!

I just preordered the R6, I am currently using Fujifilm XT1, do you reckon it’s a good upgrade from the XT1 for the video capability
