My take on today's video, apart form him being un-tucked and hating work, and loves money, was that he tries his best but fails to avoid poking a lot of indirect ridicule at Donald Trump. This is great, as the orange one himself is incapable of understanding ridicule if it's a little subtle. If you thought this was not a subtle video, I have a feeling that Simon can really roast "The Don", should he choose.

Great work, Brian. Love Meme Accountant! Make it so, Simon! And that's some damn fine in-depth analysis in today's takeaway.
But are we sure it's actually the heater? Nagging feeling that it might be Sam, bound, gagged (or sedated, but probably gagged cos only medication down there is cocaine), and dragged up from the basement to serve as a footstool. That's why he didn't mention Sam more than once or so--he was right there, so his subconscious didn't feel the need to

He has cashflow from global brand licensing deals, letting him borrow lots of money to appear rich, but then he spends it on things like unbooked helicopter taxiing to re-arrive at a party when people didn't notice him arrive the first time, and he borrowed huge amounts which he lost by making terrible decisions. At the time of his run for president, he likely had negative assets, because his debts were so high, which is why he has continued to refuse to publish his tax returns, and banks were refusing to lend him more money. He has been using the presidency to win favour with banks, but his probable plan of releasing Russia from sanctions that are blocking his ability to launder Russian capital flight - which he had previously made money doing, and was probably in large part why he wanted the presidency - appears dead in the water following scapegoating of Russia for Hillary's failed purchase of the election. If he's no longer in debt, it's because he's not the one making the decisions.

One of the senior executives of one of his casinos resigned in disgust due to how Trump responded to one guest. A Japanese businessman was gambling large bets and winning millions. Casinos are a statistics game and eventually the businessman would have started losing and the psychology of gambling addicts would keep him losing. As long as the guy stayed in the casino, the casino would get the money back.
When Trump heard about the guest winning so much, he ordered the managers to kick the guest out. That is bad customer service and bad business since it made it impossible for the company to recover the money. The Japanese businessman just moved on to a different casino where he lost the money he had previously won. Effectively, Trump transferred his own casino's money to a rival.
I can only guess that Trump thought that winning was a personality trait, not a probabilistic chance.

It was supposed the be the new "Monopoly" game of the future, but utterly failed to meet those expectations. All I could gather from the game was "I went first, I win", and any other strategy was neither possible, nor recommended. I have literally seen games of "52 card pick-up" that had more variation to them, and the only other game who's rules were more pointless and unintelligible was "The Waltons" board game, which was based on the popular TV show, and little else. I've always been a bit surprised when non-Americans aren't familiar with the most basic of imperial units and approximate conversions, especially the English from whom we got our system. I'm not at all suggesting our system is superior to metric or that other countries should switch to it (switch back to it in many cases). We've tried to switch to metric since the 70s and learned it in school starting in elementary in my case at least (that was in the late 80s), but it's hard to force people to stick to it without violating the Bill of Rights somehow.
The metric system has been the standard for what, a few decades in most countries? I wouldn't expect them to know a word of the Preamble of our Constitution since it's never been relevant to anyone outside our borders, but any place influenced by American media is going to hear pounds, feet, gallons, etc., mentioned occasionally, just as we hear metric units from time to time, so it seems worth it to know the most common ones. (Yes, I realize some Americans aren't very familiar with the most basic metric units either even though they were taught in school, but I think that's mostly people at the bottom of the barrel.)
      Roughly speaking:
      2 lbs = 1 kg
      1 inch = 2 1/2 cm
      3 feet = 1 yard = 1 meter
      1 gallon = 4 quarts = 4 liters
      60 mph = 100 km/h
Temperature is a little more complicated, and I can't think of any other type of unit worth remembering, but just these few would help Americans and non-Americans alike. A couple of them, yards/meters and quarts/liters, are only about 10% off, so you can just think of them as pretty much the same thing and forget a conversion factor if you're not building a rocket or anything.
That post ended up a lot longer than I'd intended...

Because regardless of the various decisions that W made, be they getting us into an expensive and pointless war or cutting away financial regulations that then allowed the housing crash, he personally seems like a pretty genial guy. Probably a little full of himself in the way that a lot of people are when they come from wealth and privilege, but if you were to say, sit next to someone exactly like him on a train or something you'd probably be able to have a pleasant enough conversation. He made overtures to reach out beyond the traditional Republican base of older white men, because he seemed to understand that the future of the Republican party was dependent on diversifying along with the country as a whole. Unlike Donald Trump, he didn't get an endorsement from former Klan leader David Duke.
Trump has actively courted racists, and the sort of thing that we thought was going to be getting further and further in the rearview mirror has come roaring back with the sorts of rhetoric he traffics in. Hate crimes and race-motivated terrorism is up. He makes national policy decisions that are great for people at the top (like the trillion-dollar tax cut for businesses that allowed them to increase their stock value and CEO pay, but not invest in employees or overhead) and bad for everyone else. He makes international policy decisions that hurt America's standing in the world and accelerate the arrival of the day when China is the world's polestar, like pulling troops out of Germany and starting trade wars which harm rather than help the US. Oh, and lets not forget the terrible response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All it takes is a look around the world at how countries have handled it, and you can see which ones have done a good job (with similar conditions as the US - obviously something like New Zealand, a small country on some islands, is going to have an easier job of dealing with it than a large country with a hue population and a lot of transportation hubs like China) and which ones have not.
In addition to that, Trump is just so personally loathsome that he's the kind of person that you wouldn't want to be in the same room with. He lies with all the care of someone who doesn't give a shit if you believe him or not, he refuses to take responsibility for anything bad while taking credit for anything good, he has a fragile ego, he insults and belittles people, he makes baseless accusations to deflect attention from himself. It wouldn't matter if he were president of the US, president of the HOA or even just a gardener - if you encountered someone in your daily life who behaved exactly like Donald Trump you would go out of your way to avoid him. You would only interact with someone like that if you absolutely had to.
And that's one of the most maddening things about it, and one of the things that probably paints W in a better light in your mind - there's still a third of the US population that eats up all of this shit like ice cream (and yes, that is a reference to 'Eat Da Poo Poo'). I wasn't particularly interested in politics back then apart from not wanting to vote for anyone who was in favor of gun control, but I don't remember anyone regarding George W Bush with the same sort of religious fervor. To his supporters he was the POTUS, he made decisions that they liked and some he didn't - Trump on the other hand is Dear Leader.
And that's why you look back on 01-09 with fondness. Because a Dear Leader can command the sort of irrational, unquestioning and outright terrifying loyalty that a mere president cannot.

    • @brye687
      @brye687 4 роки тому

@@mattrobson3603 I absolutely agree. I disagreed with George W. Bush on many fundamental issues, and felt like he represented America poorly when he often misspoke, but Trump is everything I disliked about Bush magnified and so much more. When bush said something awkward, I was embarrassed, but when Trump speaks I'm so often horrified. This is not just because he tells the American people to ignore Covid, or inject bleach. It's not just that he stokes racism and bullies his opponents, Including children. It's not just his ego, and unwillingness to listen to the intelligence community or medical experts. It's not just his elevation of family and cronies into positions which they have no experience or qualification. It's not just his fascistic response to protesters, or his lip service to religion. It's not just his willfull disregard of the law or of the limitations of his office. It's not just his obsequious deference towards Putin or the laughingstock he made of himself at the UN. It's not just his withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement or the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). Its not just his fake news rhetoric and propaganda media. Its that so many Americans support him like a cult. His lies are fact checked and his supporters don't care. I truly don't understand how so loathsome a person can garner so much blind loyalty. What truly bothers me is that his presidency has revealed a side of America that I thought was waning. I thought only small pockets of ignorance and racism were scattered across the country, not enough to fill arenas. I never thought I'd see "good men and women" bow to a demagogue, but that is exactly what the Republican party has done. So many Republicans went from detesting Trump to providing unwavering support, to avoid angering his base. Trump has kept exactly one campaign promise: to run America like one of his business. America is quickly going bankrupt, financially as well a morally.
...and yeah I would probably enjoy a conversation with W.
