back in 2012, I was doing my compulsory military service which felt like imprisonment for many times and I had only one day to go out and access to the internet. This was the original video and song on youtube that I kept listening for months.
I think it really says something about Robben Ford when there are over 2.7 million views on an 8 minute live jazz song. He's not exactly a household name to the masses but those who know who he is respect him immensely.
So amazing. The passing of Alexander Dumble brought me there. Haven't watched him play in a long while. Sometimes you forget when it's not overhyped. He should be overhyped tho. What a fat sound with that tele!
Music helps us all in so many ways. I've loved Robben since Talk to Your Daughter and I've never heard him play better than this. I had a massive emotional connection with this and I was sobbing with joy by the end; I guess he means even more to me than I thought!
The notes he doesn’t play are every bit as important as the ones he does, incredible feel, and even the longest stretches of solo have context and movement, amazing player.
What I love the most about Robben Ford is how he plays so soft and so easy for a long time and makes you wait for the jazzy bits you know he's so good at. As a guitarist I find he shows so much restraint. He could wow everyone with his music vocabulary but takes it easy and keeps it simple, using really basic scales... then slowly he introduces fancier and fancier stuff. Musicianship at its finest in my opinion.
@Jerry Vdm Just so discouraging of a comment to those who come with an open heart to share with one another...From an outsider it could look as though you have a jealousy issue...? One makes themselves look attention seeking when making such negative comments...I only mean this as positive input for you to consider....Be happy for others , even if you feel you missed out on something in this lifetime...You then will have moments of sincere happiness and joy.Envy is an ugly thing to harbor...
Alot of people play the guitar , players appreciating players is great. However believe it or not there are many people who know nothing about it. They cant tell what someones hand position is etc. So I think mr. Jerry read that wrong, man. When I play am I just flailing along or trying to get down to something that is real? I used to play out.....These days I'm pretty happy when I vamp from i to iv and feel it and enjoy it. Most times when other folks might hear and see it, they go WOW! Quite frankly I never find it boring. Tnx ....Terri...I'm happy I can play the guitar... I believe Mr. Ford would agree....
I can understand why this clip is one of most popular from Robben. Brilliant playing and band feeling.. dynamic handling of volume by band is also phenomenal. I'll return to this over and over.
"You will NEVER, EVER sound exactly like Robben Ford, none of us will." - Guthrie Govan "Robben Ford figured out how to play blues and jazz at the same time without alienating either side. His playing reminds me of a skateboarder on the edge of a pipe -- he'll just hang on a note." - John Mayer
+chalid i wow, i just found out about ROBBEN FORD from COREY CONGILIO of TRUEFIRE (AN ONLINE GUITAR PROGRAM; ROBBEN FORD EVEN HAS A FEATURED VERSION). I love this song, and his style is tasty. I am surprised to see Govan say that, as I just recently found out about him as well. He's just amazingly impressive. And then Mayer, love his trio sound and soloing. Definitely listened to Continuum a bunch too. Like these quotes. Where are they from?
Here's some more guitarist you would want to check out - Peter Green (Early Fleetwood) and the John mayall stuff as well. Replaced Clapton in that. They liked Peter better. BB King said he is the only guitarist who could really give him chills. - Paul Kossoff (Free) - Eddie Hazel (Funkadelic) - From the bottom of the my soul, from his solo album, is one the best phrased solos i ever heard. Maggot brain of course as well. Mekka for many in feel. Just check him out. - Plini as well. Young Australian dude. Instrumental soundscape, progressive stuff. He is extremely talented and musical. - John Scofield - Philip Sayce - Gary Clark Jr. - Julian Lage - Dorian Sorriaux (Blues Pills) -Tim Christensen (Dizzy Mizz Lizzy - Danish Dude) Fantastic - David Maxim Micic - Check living room and you'll get it. - Buckethead - The dude's made way over 300 albums. A lot of shred that is hard to get, but he has music from every genre, and he's absolutely amazing, if you give yourself time to search a little of his music. Aaron Marshall ( Intervals) - Instrumental dope ass shit - Mother's cake. dope ass shit band from Austria I think. Check em out. - David Gilmour of course - Pink floyd - Prince should get a shout out as well. Here's some inspiration to look into :) Have a good guitar journey
Ever since his days with his brothers in the Charles Ford Band it was more than apparent Robben was headed for greatness, I bought that LP back in my high school days in the early 70s and sure was glad I did. One of the finest players around anywhere.
I have know idea how anyone can give this video thumbs down unless they are not a musician or appreciate the feeling that goes into the music... I met Mr. Ford at the Coach House and he signed my guitar book he was very gracious and the show was amazing!
The problem is, with Robben Ford, it's like watching a painter paint, and admiring his 'flawless' brushwork and not realising that the actual painting is pretty ordinary.
Go and watch some Paco De Lucia vids, and work out why, even people who don't know jack about Flamenco, find his music so mesmerising. Then watch some more Robben Ford vids and then the reality might dawn on you, that there is more to music than technical proficiency.
Wades in and out of genres in the course of a riff. What a talent, incredible touch and expression. Love his work on The Easy Song with the Yellowjackets.
Thanks for reminding me of him. Lucky enough to have discovered this genius after reading an article in Guitar Magazine, and seen him many times since Fairfield Halls Croydon in 1997. Always at the top his game and the top guitarist in this genre- who else does it this well? Anyway, he is in London next year- 2025. Don't miss out.
What a great band and what a sense for dynamic. Keeping the music interesting while barely playing isn´t that easy. But the song is good, the band is really good and above it all Robben agin plays his beautiful guitar lines. Very inspiring indeed!
Hi All ..... Robin plays a 1960 Vintage Fender Tele & typically thru a Dumble amp .... his tone is fantastic & he plays other guitars as well that do have humbuckers (an Epiphone Casino & the Baker ) ... he could play a plastic guitar & make it sound good.... he is beyond well versed in speaking to people in musical ways ... whether he is playing Rhythm or Lead or both he is the quintessential player ... no overplaying, support for the other musicians & an awesome guitar vocabulary... his knowledge base is amazing ... & he has played with an amazing amount of people aside from a good solo career .... I was fortunate 2 study with him when I was much younger & still 2 this day I am staying current with what he is teaching ... he gets it & would like nothing better than 2 pass that info on 2 anyone willing 2 listen & learn .... that is as it should b for all of us muso's & hopefully he'll b doing it for a long time 2 come ... playing that awesome sounding tele (ok, I have 1 also & it sings, so I am a bit prejudiced by that fact ;-) )or his Casino or Baker ... his call on the that & I know I'm listening no matter what axe he is swinging ... so keep blurring that Line between Jazz & Blues, and creating the well rounded player who comps & solo's with the song & artists in mind, Robben ... we r listening ..
This is my kind of music to listen when I just want to relax and unwind, so lovely and relaxing. Mr. Ford, you're one of the greats, you're one of my guitar heroes. Thanks to Jorge Navarro for posting this video...:)
Great guitarist/musician who's got the chops to just flaunt all the time, but here is clearly much more dedicated to "the search" for something more and, as he does here, usually finds it. Master of subtlety when it's called for.
WOWWW I love this. Its Friday night at my room.Done with work.Set all the mood in my room -me music and vibes :).Fantastic playing and a performance.WOWWWW
how come robben ford can be so enormously incredible good guitar player and people who aren't connected to guitar playing doesn't know him very well? he extrapolates all the limits of his own instrument to become a master in music.
Years ago, I had an opportunity to sit in studio with Robben for about 8 hours. In that period of time, though he might have used similar notes, each idea was uniquely placed and uniquely phrased. At the end of the session I asked him, "You didn't repeat the same idea twice in 8 hours. How do you do that?" He replied, "The short answer is when you grow up in the Sacramento area (Ukiah) your are either a car-guy or you're something else. I chose to be something else. So each day when I came home from school all I did was listen to and learn vocabulary from all of the greats." (which he then listed) We learn from emulating what others have done. We then reinterpret what we learn and put it in our own voice. Put a little bit of theory behind all of that vocabulary so you know how to apply what you know in different ways, and there ya go.
So, 20 years as a guitarist, and today I discover Robben Ford....
Same wtf why on earth haven't I heard this guy before
Same but better late than never
Have you already discovered Roy Buchanan? Also a Tellie legend.
Dude, me too....wth!?
I knew him since I was 6 years old nd im 20 today. The best guitarist in the world for me💯
back in 2012, I was doing my compulsory military service which felt like imprisonment for many times and I had only one day to go out and access to the internet. This was the original video and song on youtube that I kept listening for months.
Very few people will ever play with as much class as Robben Ford.
I think it really says something about Robben Ford when there are over 2.7 million views on an 8 minute live jazz song. He's not exactly a household name to the masses but those who know who he is respect him immensely.
True man love this masterpiece
I'm a drummer and have been a Ford fan for a real long time. One of my favorites.
So amazing. The passing of Alexander Dumble brought me there. Haven't watched him play in a long while. Sometimes you forget when it's not overhyped. He should be overhyped tho.
What a fat sound with that tele!
Just discovered him one minute and 30 seconds ago and I can already tell he's a fantastic guitarist
Half of those are mine bro.
Music helps us all in so many ways. I've loved Robben since Talk to Your Daughter and I've never heard him play better than this. I had a massive emotional connection with this and I was sobbing with joy by the end; I guess he means even more to me than I thought!
He's been a comfort following the ascension of Jeff Beck.....
Check out the Eric Clapton tribute to Jeff Beck.....
Instant emotional overload
My favorite Robben's song by far. The chorus is so heavy! It's the most metal thing from Robben :)
The notes he doesn’t play are every bit as important as the ones he does, incredible feel, and even the longest stretches of solo have context and movement, amazing player.
The genius, the master, Robben fordever!!!😊❤
Always a joy to hear a Tele in the hands of a great player.

+Agtronic No wonder he got a call from Miles Davis.
Agtronic indeed
His Phrasing is unmatched

The Whole Band is Amazing!.. So tight & spot on Together with Robben. Fantastic!! Can't wipe the Smile off my Face, Heart, & Soul 😊
Have loved this guy for years....this is why.
This guy is absolutely a genius!!How the heck did I find him just now????
And I found 10 years after you. He will play in my city (Curitiba - Brazil) on my birthday. I'm happy for that❤
Hands down the best guitarist mainstream listeners have never heard. Amazing dude who grew up in a tiny town, Ukiah, CA near the Oregon border.
What a revelation after seeiing a bunch of guitarplayers playing as fast as they can,
great sounding guitar!
played with robben yesterday... was one of the best experiences :)
Folks, it doesn't get much tastier than this! Robben Ford is a guitar poet not just a player!
♥️
So much more soul and feeling here than pop radio today which lacks it
better late than never... let some of these young fellas feel this groove...pocket is perception...sweet
Robben probably gets the best tone out of every guitar he plays more than anyone I've ever heard.
Mr. Ford's playing is nectar, vintage wine, and silk.
The best. Nobody has the touch the Robben has on the guitar. It’s other worldly.
I can understand why this clip is one of most popular from Robben. Brilliant playing and band feeling.. dynamic handling of volume by band is also phenomenal. I'll return to this over and over.
for 7 months, everyday, 3 or 4 times. i am going insane!
Did you come back?
Me too and just came across him tonight and glad I did. The rabbit hole has been life changing.

Oh my god what a sense of touch and tone with great songwriting. A true legend
Wow……just wow. My Saturday morning coffee quiet time jam. A true artist and an American treasure.
Ever since his days with his brothers in the Charles Ford Band it was more than apparent Robben was headed for greatness, I bought that LP back in my high school days in the early 70s and sure was glad I did. One of the finest players around anywhere.
Groove, funk, touch, vibe...have mercy, Mr Ford.
I completely agree. It is also my favorite song of Robben, I love it.
I have know idea how anyone can give this video thumbs down unless they are not a musician or appreciate the feeling that goes into the music... I met Mr. Ford at the Coach House and he signed my guitar book he was very gracious and the show was amazing!
a guy who understands light and shade in his playing
Very Roy Buchanan
+rick s in fact robben ford's playing is very different compared to buchanan's
+Julien Prégent Nice observation
helluva comment, sir!
dji zzah yep
Smooth as silk, this guy. Beautiful stuff.
Christ! His use of dynamics is flawless!
Flawless dynamics, probably.
Soulless elevator music, definitely !
+Saint Kimbo Oh yeah definitely. Robin Ford is one of those players that probably 80% of his listeners are musicians.
The problem is, with Robben Ford, it's like watching a painter paint, and admiring his 'flawless' brushwork and not realising that the actual painting is pretty ordinary.

tim white Thanks, you've now explained one of the reasons 80% of musicians never make it beyond their bedrooms.
Freak’n tone for days. Every note is what the song needs. I love his playing
And what a groove from this band.
This whole performance, it's just perfection.
Oo knk sa
❤I like this song and Robben Ford and his friends !
Robben Ford... Most underrated guitarist ever... Certainly one of my favorites...Time, Tune and Taste...
Not underrated by people who have been listening to him, like I have since he came out of Ukiah high school.
Been listening to Robben since his days with The Yellowjackets. Saw him more recently several times playing the blues live. Great phrasing and tone.
This guy is disgustingly good at this !! Perfect feeling and timing not to mention his incredible talent.
Robben and his band are so freaking awesome. Thanks for your great music 🎉🎉🎉❤🤘👍
La mejor versión, de uno de los mejores temas de todos los tiempos. No me cansa nunca
Wades in and out of genres in the course of a riff. What a talent, incredible touch and expression. Love his work on The Easy Song with the Yellowjackets.

DEAREST mister Ford,superb sir.
Dynamically mindblowing

The sexiest Robben Ford song I've ever heard.
Life song is so goooood

my most fave song of Robben .... thank you .... Gary, Chris, Deron .. .. = best players of Robben!!!
Just amazing, so beautiful and powerful.
Had this on in the background while reading and suddenly goosebumps all over and moving. Seriously good stuff.
Robben has always been so underrated! He's an incredible musician.
Beautify brilliant! Virtuosity and emotion meet with groove and I can't get enough!
What a great sound!!! And I really like his musicality.
Very meditative 💫, great pickups, great sound 👌
Robben sounds amazing as usual, but man that snare and bass drum tone is on point. High and tight tuning. Sounds heavenly.
I just thought that one thing off in this song is snare sound. Matter of taste I guess...
Snare is too loud

Not better than Eric Johnson
Graham Saxton Never
Graham Saxton Not at all. Sorry I don't like Robben
Graham Saxton I'm kidding. He's great. I just don't know much of his stuff. I have work to do on that
Whhhoouuwww! What a lesson for every Guitarist! Thank you!
You´re welcome
:):):)
Mind blowing greatness!!
SMH in awe of his musicianship
It's nice to see all the lesson videos I've seen being proven in his live performances. Dude is a true master of the guitar.
Robben has no limits, and shows no barriers to reach the impossible in technique + unexpected emotions. So thankful you are here
This is my kind of music to listen when I just want to relax and unwind, so lovely and relaxing. Mr. Ford, you're one of the greats, you're one of my guitar heroes. Thanks to Jorge Navarro for posting this video...:)

No words to describe how good this is guitar playing is on another level.
The damn tremolo effect and that clean sound is so perfect..
this is a true professional, a guitar player that deserves much more credit than has been given
One of the legit greats of elec gtar that few know about!
Robben really knows how to leave gaps, making you wait for the next lick. ❤
God Bless you Robben Ford . We will jam on the other side
Just beautiful, i could watch and listen to him all day and night, the music gives me goose bumps!
I've been playing guitar for over 20 years and I'm only starting to realize how good Orbben Ford is, waw thank god I'm at that point
And 20 years more until you realise that his name is Robben ford
not Orbben Ford.
abhishek bhatia that’s hilarious!
LOL
Hew's the real deal.

Good ole Orben fordious maximus
There's just something I love about this man.
Inspirational!
The band is killin' it... Man the Fender Rhodes is the shizz. Robben is doing his thing... playing freestyle.
Wonderful song! Reminiscent of "Life Song".
Robben-Simply fabulous playing by you and the band. Thank you.
Mega Guitarist. ! unique sound and feel :)
Einfach nur schön - Empathie und absolutes Feingefühl!
Great guitarist/musician who's got the chops to just flaunt all the time, but here is clearly much more dedicated to "the search" for something more and, as he does here, usually finds it. Master of subtlety when it's called for.
Hey do u think he would be good in a band with a lead singer of its category?
Ford keeps it soft and smooth, his ability with the chords and sense of timing is unique with such a difficult instrument.
LOVE THE DYNAMICS
I could listen to Robben all day and all night!
Tone! Tone! The notes breath...
hello again in my daily robben ford listening
This was great! I don't care if the bassist has a soul patch, I'm in!

At first listen this became top five all time guitar instrumentals for me. This guy's approach to soloing is amazing.
Excelente!!
Been a fan & really took noticed of Robben's superb fiery musicianship during the LA Express days back in '74 & on
You can listen to Robben improvise for an hour and never hear the same lick twice.
spadalino same is true for me, except you get 15 seconds.
Jimmy Vaughn said his brother never played the same lick ONCE !
Depends how many notes you're counting as your lick :P
@@bernardliu8526 I mean.. he played all his licks at least once.
