  • I'm testing Liquitex Professional Acrylic Ink and Daler Rowney Acrylic Ink side by side. First I swatch all of the beautiful colors in my sketchbook. Then I paint a master study on watercolor paper and two space themed trees in my sketchbook. This is my first time using ink to create art. I had a lot of fun with this and I hope you enjoy watching the full process.

Thank you for sharing another video!
Unsolicited tips from someone who uses these frequently (feel free to ignore): (EDIT: at the end you asked for tips, so these are solicited now :p )
-The bottles actually mix up a lot easier if they're warm! I obviously don't recommend microwaving them or anything, but having them in your lap or in a sun beam or under a sleeping cat or something for a while before painting helps them mix better than cold-mixing.
-If you're looking for a sketchbook to use these in I absolutely recommend mixed media or watercolor. Even though they're technically inks, due to their liquid nature, they're going to affect the paper like watercolor and you'll want something that will hold up to that.
-You're having the bleedthrough and "dry feel" from the Liquitex swatches for the same reason: it's the paper, not the inks. The paper's absorbing it instantly and allowing it to move down through the page, which not only allows for the bleed-through but also means it can't move freely across the top of the paper. Some sketchbooks are better about this than others. This just happens to be one that's not too nice about it. :p
-Some areas will be shiny even if they're completely dry. They're acrylic inks, so they get that shiny plastic surface when layered fairly thickly.
-One of the great features of these is that they're permanent when dry, unlike watercolor, which reactivates. It makes for great line art, layering, etc., and I definitely recommend looking for ways to use it to your advantage. Unfortunately, it does have the side effect that when it dries on the palette you get the crumblies.
-Not sure where you heard you're not supposed to shake them, but the Liquitex for sure specifically say to shake them well before use. I know that masking fluid/liquid friskit you're not supposed to shake, but that's because the bubbles in that cause a lot more issue than bubbles in ink.
-Mixing any of the colours with the white in a palette makes for gorgeous opaque pastel inks.

Wow! Thank you so much! You’re always so helpful! And I appreciate your wall of text. 😆
I can’t remember who said not to shake them but to tip them back and forth gently instead so you don’t get bubbling. It might have been Sandi Hester.. but I feel like I heard it several times from different creators. I’ll definitely try to warm them up a bit before using next time. I would have never thought to try that. They were really fun to use and I’m excited to play around more with them! You’re so right about the paper too. I was hoping the acrylic would keep them from bleeding but I’ll definitely be using more watercolor range papers and sketchbooks. The blue liquitex definitely wasn’t having it. I’ll try gesso too. It might leave a bad texture.. but worth a try. Thank for sharing and watching! 😊👍

@@artbyheatheryour right about shaking, I've watched LOADS of artists and they all said DONT shake, I made that mistake with my first bottle diamine ink and there was so many bubbles you couldn't use it till they settled otherwise it causes the ink to be blotchy

@@artbyheather I'm always worried when offering advice on art supplies that I come off as being "HERE I KNOW THINGS LISTEN TO ME," when in reality I am not an expert at all, I just like sharing tips and tricks back and forth with people who like the same supplies. It's mostly a matter of "I had to learn all of this the hard way so if I can save someone a mistake or two I want to be helpful."
I learned about the warmth trick when I was using Dr. P.H.Martin iridescent ink. They were always a nightmare to shake, but I found somewhere that if you let them get warm first they mix a lot easier, and it helped a lot!
I haven't had issue regarding the bubbles, but I also drop them into wells of a palette first, so that might be helping me out. I'll keep an eye out for issues in the future (and for using it to my advantage. ;p ). Stirring them would also probably be a faster way to mix without having bubble issues arise. All of the bottles I have specifically say to shake them so I figured it was just masking fluid that needed to avoid it, but I'll definitely watch for it! Good to know! Thanks!
Using gesso on the backs of the paper might let you play around with still having the paper texture without having to worry about the artwork on the opposite pages, but I'm not sure how much it would help with the absorbency issue.
They could also be super fun to try on Yupo paper if you have any lying around. ;)
      Have a good one!

I’ll have to look up yupo paper. I don’t know if I know what that is. I agree.. it can be a little worrisome when offering advice or tips because in my experience what works well for some might not work for others. I try to always keep that in mind and never let responses or advice upset me. 😊👍 We all experience things in different ways. I say do what makes the most sense for you. I appreciate the advice. Truly

@@artbyheather For sure. :) I just don't want to come across as claiming to be an expert, I guess. Besides, experimenting is half the fun, and it's also how we learn things that are unique to our style. :D
Yupo paper is kind of like a plastic paper where the ink won't absorb at all and gets to run around freely. So it works really well for abstract stuff. (That said, it takes an eternity to dry, so keep that in mind. :p )

tip - stir your inks rather than shaking for quicker results with less bubbles

I bought two types of white drawing ink to sketch night scenes on black paper (children's book illustrations). One was "white Indian ink" with shellac as the binder; the other was white acrylic ink. The shellac ink goes gummier than acrylic ink and didn't flow as well, although it was marginally more pigmented. But you really need to shake both before use or else it's going to be very insipid.

For your first attempt I think you did pretty good! I definitely recommend using a palette with wells + water for inks, it'll save you the mess. Personally I either dilute them and use them like watercolours or do mixed media (ink + coloured pencils work really well)

    • @artbyheather
      @artbyheather  5 місяців тому +2

Thanks! I think you’re right. I’ll have to get a better pallet for mixing. I’m excited to try more transparent washes with them. And the drips were really fun too. 😊👍

  • @ZadenZane

For drawing purposes acrylic inks are a newer alternative to shellac-based "coloured Indian inks". In my experience they flow better from the pen than other pigmented drawing inks.
For painting they make an interesting alternative to fluid acrylic paint but I think for a lot of people they're going to be too fluid for conventional painting. I use them to add colour to black acrylic ink drawings but wouldn't usually paint an entire picture in acrylic ink.
You definitely are meant to shake them BTW because certain colours, especially white, yellow and brown will settle.
With the white ink especially if you're sketching on black paper you need as much pigment as possible or it's going to look very insipid, which means keeping that lovely ink all shook up all the time.
I'm sure those dropper lids are handy for some people but for me they just get in the way, so I always pour my inks into little half-ounce bottles first.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I can definitely see them being more useful as an embellishment kind of medium. The first time I saw them used was to make a full painting background and then they used something different on top to finish the piece. It looked really awesome! I definitely need more practice with them and a better way to get around the lids. I might get a pen to try also. Thanks for watching! 😊👍

Yes, your magenta and red look identical in the FW. Weird. You can gesso your sketchbook paper before using to avoid bleedthrough.

Thank you! I thought it was odd too. There is a slight difference when mixing with other colors, but I was hoping for a bigger difference. I probably will try to gesso a few pages just to try. I’ve been wanting to get a larger sketchbook in the watercolor range so I have some more freedom to play with any media. I’ll definitely be trying them on canvas too. Thanks for watching! 😊👍

You’re welcome and thanks for watching! I believe I mixed the Liquitex phthalocyanine blue with the Daler Rowney process yellow and then added Daler Rowney white until it was a light enough green. It was a very nice mint green! 😊👍

they are pretty cheap, but prob not a good idea to get a glass dip pen first, might frustrate you since they act a bit different in the way they hold the ink. you can get all kinds of nibs for the dip pen to try 🙂

U have to use alcohol to thin out the ink. Water won't do it and I wld just use the dropper as I needed the color so I wld t waste any.
