I use a Da Vinci Casaneo size 0 as my primary brush when painting anything less than ten inches or so. They are such an amazing line of brushes.
What series of Casaneo?
@@sudsn1532 I'm guessing to quill ones if they're using a size 0 as their primary brush
Hello, I'm almost buying Da vinc 0 as my first watercolor brush
Thanks for another helpful review. I was especially pleased to see how well the synthetic brush performed.
+Debbie Riley The synthetic performed surprisingly well. I can't tell the difference from the real squirrel.
The Princeton Neptune synthetic squirrel brushes have the same type of wrapped binding. It's a very good brush, too. Very soft and floppy.
susinok those are quill brushes, which have different sizing.
Thanks I don't want to use real squirrel hair because it's cruel. They are farmed for their hair so it's essentially no different to the fur trade in coats.
I was debating whether to try one. I have two Raphael Petite-Gris quills and they’re among my top favourites. I’ve been hesitant to try an imitation squirrel, but hesitated cuz I didn’t want to be disappointed. Might try a small one. Thanks.
I love my #6 Neptune quill. It's one of my best brushes. I liked it so well I bought a few rounds and flats recently. They have great points and are very soft. Don't tell anyone but I like them better than my Silver brushes.
How interesting,I haven't painted much but I've always wondered about how paint brushes are made and what different hairs do what effects! Hope to see more videos covering other brush hair types sometime 🙂
The Stoned Videogame Nerd Thanks for the link! I love me some factory tours so this will be an interesting watch 🙄
I have some silver black velvet brushes that are squirrel and synthetic mix. They’re really nice quality, but they’re so hard for me to control! I really liked seeing the differences between these three types, and it kind of makes me glad that I got the brushes that I did, since they look actually a bit easier to control than the ones you got. Mine actually go back to a point easily enough!
I adore my size 18 Cosmotop Mix B, holds so much water. That and the Cosmotop Mix B size 24 flat wash are the best brushes for laying down washes, even better than a full squirrel brush!
I just purchased the Princeton Artist Brush Neptune, 4750, Quill Synthetic Squirrel, Size 4 and still I feel that it is a huge brush, even on size 4. What I have also experienced from this particular one is that it holds loads of watercolor but it does not deliver all that water. It’s a beautiful brush, the bristles are soft and holds its point really nice but still the performance is not what I expected. I absolutely love the look and style of those brushes and I will surely try other brands. Thank you for your review.
Teoh, this was very helpful, I recently started to collect some quill brushes and yes they are huge. They do hold a lot of water, and pigment . I was able to get some very fine lines if you hold it vertically with just the tip touching the paper. Thanks again for a good video.
We had a ferret named Fitch at the zoo I worked out after the English word for ferret, or as someone already mentioned a polecat :) hanks for the comparison Teoh!
Ohmagowsh this was so helpful I just got my first squirrel hair brush and I had NO idea what to do with it! Thank you!!
I have the Paul Ruben brush set and I love the squirrel number 10.
Thank you for this comparison. I’ve been looking for some real hair brush alternatives and would love to see some for sable also.
Woah man was i not prepared for how much water these squirrel lads hold
I finally got me 2 mops a zero size and a 4 by DaVinci....and I already found out I liked the number 4 ,,DaVinci the ones with the woodenstock, not really pointy like the ones you showed us ,I think a bit Asian use fashioned...can't wait to try the number zero ..thank you for explaining
This is timely and helpful since I got 2 Blick gift cards for Christmas and I was thinking of getting a squirrel hair brush!
Very methodical and useful comparison, thank you!
I got some Raven mops from Jackson's art and they are great. I didn't try any other brand of synthetic squirrel or real squirrel as to make an educated comparison but i have several brushes and the Raven are just great bang for the buck. Probably Casaneo or Raphael softaqua are better but they tend to have a price more similar to real squirrel.
Thank you Teoh for this comparison demo, very useful information.
the Japanese colour pro looks amazing and the application is really smooth, but most importantly are these brushes cruelty free? I would like to have one but not if it envolves animal cruelty
Thank you for sharing this comparison it’s really helpful 🙏🏻
Great review as always!! I love my travel mop from Rosemary and Co (great supplier, also your recommendation!!). Thanks!!
An unexpected result. Thanks for the comparison!
I have this kind of brush i buy it at a simple art store in Hong Kong its is so soft like a hair i thought its just a synthetic
I absolutely love the Escoda ultimo, it’s one of my favourite brushes!
It's a very good brush.
The Real Mythril Yes, and i see that its sponsered by Fabio Cambrenelli a very talented and well know artist from Brazil.
da vinci artissimo 428 is a kolinsky mop brush
Just ordered my 1st quill...yaaaa
For a better leveling you should use first a layer of ox gall diluted with water
Silver Brush Company makes GREAT mix of real and synthetic squirrel hair. Gives a little more "spring" than 100% real hair. Just FYI....
Pam Brown black velvet line right? 😄.. Those are pretty popular, I'm sure he has heard of it😜
TheSgyro yes. That's the name of the line. You never know ...
+Pam Brown I've heard a lot about those brushes. I've just ordered a few to try
Teoh...maybe give us a review of the Black beauty brushes when you get a chance? Thanks!
I'm a colored pencil artist, however, recently I have been preparing to add watercolor painting to my art. What brushes would you recommend for an artist just getting into watercolor, whose only current brushes are for ink?
Look for Silver Black Velvet brushes. They are quite worth the money for beginners
wow man...made my life..
Nice one Subscribed...Keep'em comin....
Thank you, this was very helpful to me ❤
Hi Teoh, would it be possible for you to tell me which kolinsky brush were you using in this video? I'm on the lookout for a brush that holds a ton of water and comes to a sharp point and this looks promising ☺️
The ones shown in the video are ColorPro Series 2803, Da Vinci Series 5530 Cosmotop Mix B and Escoda Ultimo.
@@teohyc thank you, but I meant the kolinsky brush that you used to compare to those - you only said that it's a kolinsky red sable, but you didn't say what brand you specifically used ☺️
@@thebooksofmylife It's a Rosemary watercolour red sable pocket brush.
@@teohontech7141 thank you! 😃
can you review of larger size round brush please, size 18 or more and what advantage of using larger size round brush instead of mop brushes.
Larger round brush can keep their shape better and are better for painting details. It's difficult to paint with mob brushes because they are too soft. Mop brushes are good for mopping the paper. lol
Thank you! This has been very helpful!
Looks like your "brushing up" on supplies ;)
J.Sheetz - Artwork Rad comment! Love the pun. :-)
J.Sheetz - Artwork Rad comment! Love the pun. :-)
ladyshadow79 Thanks. Its pun to make them!
J.Sheetz - Artwork You are good lol! Oh, and I enjoy your art videos. I'm a big fan of yours.
ladyshadow79 thank you :) if you would like i can do a drawing of you. You can message my linked email on my channel in the about section.
Yes I have that hair fake too but not the squirrel just only the hair does not go back
hello is it that escoda ultimo a real squirrel hair?
Since the difference is barely noticeable there is no reason to use a real killed(!) squirrel hair brush.
I was thinking the same thing!!! glad someone pointed that out
Thank you so much. You are very correct. Sable, Squirrel, Goat, Fox, Horse, Rat and Wolf hair are some of the animals used to give painters their artistic joy and pleasures when painting.
This da Vinci brush may be create for fresco painting !
There is a brush called ' jayana paint brush it's only available in Kerala India , ...... Must try the brush 🖌️
Great video! Thanks!
What do you think of the Raphael SoftAqua series of imitation squirrel brushes? I have a few of those, and I really like them. I have one that's that type, and then also some smaller ones.
I've not used those before so I can't say much
Where did you find the brush from Japan? I’m going in a few months and have been trying to find places to go for art supplies :)! Thanks!
I just found out today that ColorPro is actually the brand created by Straits Art, the art store here in Singapore. So I doubt you can find ColorPro in Japan. Anyway, any brush with the same type of hair should perform similarly.
Does anyone know of brushes that are real hair but also cruelty free? I don't want to use a brush if it's from the fur trade. Maybe no real hair brushes are cruelty free.
In terms of squirrel makeup brushes they say not to get it get. Is that not as important as they think? As long as it dries correctly? Any thoughts?
Not sure about makeup brushes. But for painting, the quality and performance of synthetic squirrel is very similar to natural hair, so there's no compelling reason to get natural squirrel hair brushes.
@@teohyc I see. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer ❤️
Another great review
+Anthology Notes Thanks 😁
When I go to the link of your blog, it says "access denied" Good review though.
+Sharon Nolfi I've just published the text article.
Does this mean that squirrels in the wild can never get dry as their fur holds more water ?
Not sure about that. lol. They probably shake themselves dry
Lol.
HA! actually, with the rosemary pure squirrel mop that I have, it almost seems like the fur refuses to mat together, and that's why it holds more water, because the bristles DON'T actually want to clump together completely. My sable brushes are the same way, the floof apart when dry but you have to sort of work them a little with water before they will form a point wet because the water actually fills the spaces between the hairs. Animals often have an "undercoat" kind of like what birds do. They have little fluffy down feathers close to their skin which keeps them warmer, and the flight feathers are the smooth ones we tend to think of first with the pretty colors. Mammals often have several layers and types of hairs in their coats. I don't think the paintbrush hairs are the soft little dense undercoat hairs, they seem more like the sleeker topcoat hairs. those hairs tend to repel water away from the undercoat, keeping the animals warmer in wet weather. next time you get to pet a more fluffy kind of dog or cat, check out their fur... it's sometimes got long shiny hairs that come out from their shorter closer undercoat which keeps them warm.
Wow, very interesting facts.....thank you , and yes i totally understand what you mean as you explained it so well 🧡🧡🧡
@@fredeemoon6053 of course, that's why what Teoh says about shaking themselves WORKS. 😋
Ya.. I have a cheap Chinese squirrel mop brush.. Looks a little wonky when dry, so Isn't as pretty .. But works just fine😁
The Stoned Videogame Nerd oh that didn't happen to me😐.. Maybe your brush had those metal ties too loose.. Sorry to hear about your experience
The Stoned Videogame Nerd oh yeah! I've seen those 😁.. But usually people buy goat hair in the hake format.. But i guess a pointy brush is always more versatile
Even kolinsky brushes look wonky when dry. Mine do, but when u get them it's razor sharp! Got mine off of AliExpress and I love them! The brushes I got seem better made than my more expensive ones too, kind of disappointed 🤔 never buying expensive brushes ever again.
S Warner have you tried the art secret kolinsky? How are they?
S Warner ya if i bought really expensive brushes, I'd be too worried about them to ever use it properly, so it's better to get cheap ones😁
do you use fan brushes often, if so; what for?
+Mithrarin Elysian I don't use fan brushes. They are for painting long parallel strokes such as hair, grass.
Does anyone know what's the use of the wire binding ? Like can we remove it?
The wire is to hold the bristles together. Don't remove them.
You explore the world by doing things. Of course you can remove it. Thats how you find out how stuff works. You can also take apart a refrigerator. No one's stopping you.
how do you find painting with chinese brushes?
+billy gates I've not used those for painting before so I can't say much.
Hi Teoh, thanks for this very interesting comparison 😊
Welcome :-)
I want squirrel brushhhhhh
Thank You....
+kym rhymer Welcome 😁
Hi Teoh,
You've probably heard this before.... sorry....but....
... If you could only take one brush for home and work what size and model brand would you choose?
Humble thanks!
Da Vinci Casaneo is very good.
@@teohyc
Thanks!
Would you rather choose the Da Vinci Maestro, series 35 or 10 over the Casaneo? If so which one?
@@volcanowb A Da Vinci Maestro uses real sable brush and those are the best hair for painting. BUT Casaneo hair mimic sable characteristics (sharp point and holds good amount of water) quite well at a cheaper price. If you're using Casaneo, it's actually not very different from using a sable brush.
Squirrel brushes are for covering large areas. You can get a large sable brush to do the same job but that's going to be a very expensive brush that cost several times more than a squirrel. Squirrel is soft and behaves like a mop, so it's floppy when wet and difficult to control the hair compared to sable which is more firm even when wet.
@@teohyc
Right. Thanks
Hi teoh!I want to buy a round brush..Can you please please suggest if i should go for silver black brush or escoda ultimo.. i want a brush with good water retention and sharp tip.. i really like your style of painting and will be using the brush for similar work. Thanks for your time!
Escoda Ultimo is better than Silver Black if you have the budget.
Thankyou! Will buy that :) :)
Is it possible to use human hair.....?
I guess so but human hair is too coarse.
I might have a go with my hair, as its very fine. Thaanks for replying xx
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
And none of them will make better paintings or artist using them. I have brushes that should have been thrown away that I use all the time. Use what works not what costs more than they are worth.
cool.
poor squirrels broh :(
My apologies for accidentally posted my comment to you. My phone misjudged what I was trying to get to open.
"Squirrels are evil"
-dog
victor carvajal they dont kill the squirrels 😒
This is wrong, how can you buy any paint brush or makeup brush that is from an animals fur? These animals are 0ut into this world, it's God's creatures. Squirrels are sweet, smart animals, you have no idea how helpful they really truly are.
