  • How to paint scene studies with Miya Himi Jelly Gouache. I challenged myself to use all of the 24 set of Himi Gouache in my sketchbook. This is what I have learned about using gouache so far. I give my tip while painting a scene from The Secret World of Arrietty and Spirited Away.
I had a lot of fun with this and I hope you enjoy watching the full process.

I have no knowledge of what Studio Ghibli is but both of these paintings are amazing!

Thanks so much! It’s like Japanese Disney movies. They’re really great and beautiful visually. Thanks for watching! 😊👍

I love the contrast between the studies, the first one being all bright and cheery while the 2nd is dark and moody. Also the way you just dive straight into painting without sketching is a power move, I could never haha
My favourite Ghibli movie is either Arrietty or The Cat Returns!

😆 I got too excited to sketch on the first one. I think my favorite movie changes with my mood. Howl’s Moving Castle might be my favorite more often.. but I probably have 6 favorites. Thanks for watching! 😊👍

You did a really great job with both, especially the first one the house without sketching it out. You forgot the grass though. That would have brought it all together and really made it Studio Ghibli

Thanks! I’m still not very good at layering with this gouache because it mixes so easily. You’re right about the grass. It really needs that finishing touch. Thanks for watching! 😊👍

I love watching your journey with this product/medium! I think I’m also in your boat of ‘I want to experiment and learn about using gouache, but I regret buying this particular paint, and I don’t want to waste my purchase.’ 😅 Another commenter suggested acrylic gouache and I’ve played with it a little (I got a smaller set of liquitex, I think) and feel a bit more successful with it. I struggle with any painting mostly because my cats like to ‘help’ by stealing my brushes while I’m using them, trying to drink the paint waters, or trying to dip various body parts into the paint lol.
If you’re still taking suggestions, I humbly submit painting a seahorse and/or a sea dragon. They’re my comfort items to draw and paint, and I find them fun to play around with.
It might be fun to do a scene study from The Secret of NIMH too!
Great channel, great work, and keep having fun with the process!

Thanks for the suggestions! I’d love to do both of those! I’ve been really trying. I’ve gotten a lot of comments telling me to try a better brand also. I’m sure a different brand would be easier to work with, but I think the way it constantly mixes is the real reason I can’t enjoy it. I’m sure I’ll try a different kind of gouache eventually. I’m still working through the himi for now. 🫠👍 I hope you can figure it out! Even with the interference! 😅😹

I loved both paintings. The thing I like about your using gouache, is the color intensity. I’ve never watched studio Ghibli. But I will!

Thanks! You should try Howl’s Moving Castle. I think it’s a more adult friendly watch. 😊👍

Woooo, another Himi video! I'm far too invested in the progress of this challenge. :p
I adore the texture you got in the bushes of the No Face scene.

Thank you so much for saying that! I think my Himi challenge is 50/50 on how much I want to do it for myself and for my viewers. I think acrylic gouache would definitely be more my speed! I keep forgetting that is an option. 😆
I also love trying new things. I honestly feel like I’m getting better at using gouache. It’s like building a muscle.. it sucks.. but eventually it gets easier. 😅 I’m in gouache training. I promise I’m not torturing myself by using it though. You’re 100% right! No one needs to force themselves to like using an art supply. Thanks for your kind words! 😊👍

@@artbyheatherGouache definitely took a LOT of getting used to when I first started. My main art mediums were (and still are) Copic and watercolor, both of which are transparent, so gouache required me to completely flip my brain around. That said, I find it really rewarding to jump into something completely new without any kind of base knowledge - it means that there's so much to learn, and improvement is made in leaps and bounds. :) My main goal with gouache right now is to learn how to get the transparency of skin. It's so much easier to do with layering transparent supplies; with something opaque my people keep looking like plastic.
I'm glad to hear you're not torturing yourself at least.

Please do a scene from Ponyo! It's my favorite Ghibli movie :) love the paintings btw! I got the same HIMI gouache a couple years ago and I've barely used it cause I cannot seem to get over how bad it looks at first 😭 slowly but surely unlearning my perfectionist tendencies though and you inspired me to try again. Much love

I almost chose a scene with Ponyo in the green bucket! It’s definitely in my top 5. I’d love to paint it. 😊👍 Every painting I’ve done with this gouache has made me feel like it’s not going to look good. It’s usually after I take a break and come back when it starts looking better. It’s really hard to get past that ugly stage. If you try again, I would suggest painting something small and easy. Then work your confidence up from there. Thanks for watching!

Being that Spirited Away is either my favorite or second favorite SG film, I believe my assessment of which is better is biased to say the least 😂
I love the colors. You did a good job making them similar which can’t be easy.
Favorite SG film: Howls Moving Castle or Spirited Away, depending on the day of the week 😂
I’d love to see some Lord of the Rings which have amazing art out there to replicate (or create on your own) that would be amazing to watch you paint.
And I personally have loved alll your side characters you’ve created in this journey so far…Little Master and Crocoduck are spectacular. I wonder what you will create next!!!
    Just amazing! Keep it up!
