You just blew my mind! I'm just starting with grading in Resolve and have watched a ton of videos. This is the first one where the logic has been completely sound and the explanations clear enough to make feel confident in grading with this new platform. You're the man Dunna!
Dunna! 3 years later, your video is still helping so many people, including me. You probably won't see this because you get so many comments every day, but you truly saved me!
Quick tip: If you work on a picture for more than 10min your eyes get used to it and do not notice the differences. That's why professional colourist suggest to do the primarily correction on the scoops.
@@juansigamer Probably the scopes, so the information like the weird flow lines on the right bottom. You can use it to gain information about the colors in the video
Yesterday I finally decided to jump from Premiere into DaVinci , so today was the first day and i dedicated it entirely to absorbing as much info as i could to have an understanding of it…From basic tutorials, to more advanced ones to see what features DaVinci has , to reading comments, people with different opinions and bringing up topics , looking up those topics , etc. Now 15 hours later back at your video and definitely having a much easier time folowing through the process, still overwhelmed but excited to get to work and keep going. Great one ! Thank you for your help!
I don't know why, but this was the first video I've watched, that made me realise nodes in Resolve are just steps in your colour grading! Now it feels like Resolve's learning curve is less steep, it's definitely got me thinking about downloading it. Thanks for breaking it down!
Nodes give you the ability for a lot more than just organization, they also allow you to build off of your previous work. So if I change the luminance levels in one node, I can go to the next node and work from the new luminance levels instead of guessing. Then on top of that there are different types of nodes for different jobs. Basically saying “can’t you just use basic saturation” is like asking a painter why they have different brushes, canvas materials, tools, and techniques instead of just always painting on paper with the same brush in only red.
I used to do the actual film grading for motion picture negative n positive with chemical processing. That was very very complicated. That process used to depend on A To Z color balance with mood n contrast correction. I found the same theme in your work flow. That is really very professional. Keep it up.
Wow! That would be super fun to learn and probably very tedious to do regularly haha. Thanks for the kind words about my process. That’s really cool that it resembles the real film process
Going back through all of these videos now that I am switching my studio over to resolve and I forgot just how good your content on this stuff is... so good. so so good.
Thank you for this! I've been using Da Vinci for sometime but wasn't able to figure out colour grading. You explain it so clearly, showing the process along the way. Glad I found this!

It’s all the same stuff as editing a photo in Lightroom, it’s just called different things and laid out differently. “Lift” is shadows, “Gamma” is midtone contrast, “Gain” is highlights, “Offset” is like Exposure. Also I’ve noticed that most Davinci tutorials on UA-cam are geared towards professionals doing commercial work. They have like 25 adjustment nodes, and it’s all a but much for an amateur who just wants to put together a decent looking 5 minute UA-cam vid.

Nice video so far. One suggestion: i would always use the color transform plugin on the entire timeline rather than on single clips (click „clips“ under „nodes“ and switch to timeline). If all clips are from the same base/setting in your hardware.
I’ve done that too! But I’ve also found that from time to time I end up wanting to apply a node after the CST but for only one clip and it’s bit me in the ass haha. As long as you don’t need that or have footage from multiple sources, then doing the CST on the timeline works great!
It's easy to copy your color transform plugin from one clip to other clips in the timeline, just select the other clips, then push your mouse wheel in on the clip you modified.
This is very helpful! I just shot some footage for a local musician; shot in Flog ( fujifilm ). I'm going to apply what I've learned from you video for this upcoming project of mine.
Nicely done, I think if you set a keyboard preference key for your node labeling you can access it without all the mouse clicks. I have mine set to the "Tab" key ( nothing else is set to it by default ) - Also I have tried white balancing from snow before - to me when you did that it looked a little cool and you later added some warmth, most likely from the sky reflecting on the snow and making it less white than it actually is. And for some of the new users - in the layer node on the skin, after qualifying the skin you can still put a power window on it and narrow down the selection - not necessarily needed here, but it is a standard thing for a colorist to do, checking the vectorscope at that point is also a good idea. Your eyes can get fatigued while color grading and referencing the vectorscope to confirm what you are looking at ( second opinion ) is always a good option.
You have a way of making things easy to understand. I've been using Davinci for a little while now and I wish I had this and your other video when I first started!

I have a question about the order of the nodes. I am new to Davinci Resolve and have noticed people use different orders in their nodes. Would there be an advantage to putting the color grade nodes before the conversion nodes so you are changing the color of the log footage witch has the most amount of information?
do you go through each shot and do the process from scratch every time or do you create some sort of a macro and just re-touch it depending on the shot?
