Well, as we get older, certain parts of the body start to droop, sag, and loosen. It used to be that we required plastic surgery to “enhance” our body parts to mitigate or even reverse signs of aging. Now, we have Davinci Resolve.

I ended up paying for a masterclass for davinci because it was hard to find someone who explains it without thinking you know what all these terms mean. Now having the knowledge and watching your video, you did an amazing job! Hope this video finds its way to the right people! Very helpful!
The way he explains is so easy to comprehend, he doesn't talk over a person's head who may not understand certain verbiage and I really appreciate that alot!!!
This is by far one of the best video tutorial I've ever watched, when I feel like I understand than just try to do what the video is saying, I don't know how to thank this video :) Really appreciated
You are amazing, this is literally the only tutorial I could properly learn from and comprehend and I've gone through quite a bit of tutorials for beginners, THANK YOU
Dude, you're the best. Love how you used a simple visual reference where people can actually see what's happening. Would you happen to have a similar video on offset/power/slope?
Ok ok... just blew my mind the way you explained it and helped out soooooo much to understand better. I kind of knew that the midtones, highlights and shadows didn´t do the best job, but now...!!! Thanks so much!
What a brilliant way using the curve to explain the concept of lift, gamma and gain. And you have also helped clarified that that those and shadow, midtones and highlight aren't synonymous as I always thought. Thanks for the awesome tutorial
@@dunnadidit I've been spending alot more time learning about colouring and Nodes seems to be all anyone talks about. Your explanation here worked well, sooo no pressure ha.
This tutorial has been an absolute lifesaver, switched over tho Davinci Resolve recently and I was completely lost before this video when it came to colour grading. Thanks again!!
Thank you for this video! Someone recommended I color grade my dog videos to improve them. I tried to look up color grading to learn how, and asked the very question you answered in this video. Thank you so much!
You turned a light on in my head. I worked as a commercial editor for a lifetime and sat behind legendary colorists, and you just demystified this process for me. I can stop hitting my head against the wall.
Well I’m glad that you stopped hitting your head against a wall but if there’s a light in there you might wanna get that checked out still 😜 (glad the video was helpful!)
I've been wanting to better understand the nuance of the wheels (lift, gamma, gain) and the logs (shadows, midtones, highlights). You used a very innovative explanation tool. AND it had the benefit of showing how curves are affected. Bravo!
I’ve been using Resolve for a year now, but I usually don’t touch on the Fusion and Color pages because they can really be overwhelming. Seeing this tutorial made me more open to the idea of using it more and more. Other tutorials just kinda overwhelm me with the info. Dunna’s tutorial was right on the money.
Jed Jumawan Jed Jumawan i never really tweak around with the color page because i dont shoot in log or in flat color profiles and its kinda overwhelming. im satisfied with the standard picture profile that i shoot in. i know im not using resolve and my camera to its fullest potential but im happy with the results im getting and thats fine by me. and ive been using resolve for school projects and what not. i dont put as much time into using resolve but hey everybody has their own paces when learning something new. (ps i didnt think that you sounded like a jerk✌🏽)
As for fusion, you just need to find simple examples like text with background. Follow them step by step. Using them it makes more sense, than just watching.
For the color page use the free resolve training on their website. They have sample videos to use and PDF books and videos. Again follow along coping exactly what it says in the videos and the books. You can watch the video once, but really you need to actually use the software as they tell you in the book. It's basically impossible to learn by watching, you need feedback of using the tools. You need hands on experience. People get stuck this way. I may seem tedious or silly, I assure you it is not. Put in the time. It's not hard, just a bit time consuming. Do a little every day, till you finish. What ever it takes.
You saved me from hours of watching other people's videos with your very detailed and simple explanations! Thank you very much🙌👏✌Hoping for your continued success💛💙
I have seen these terms and UI's for ages now and i kinda understood what they do and mean, but i haven't come across someone who's connected the dots the way you have.. You're a great teacher ! Keep em coming !!
Thanks so much for this. I’ve been getting deep into 3d graphics lately and just starting to play around with compositing and color grading. I’ve had no concrete idea of what these functions and curves really did (and surprisingly, seems to be missing from many tutorials, at least in the more 3D-focused space). I imagine I’ll be referencing this video a lot in the near future. 😊👍🏼
that you so much! I saw it un my recommendations (but had already watched 2 videos on color grading and was at first like "hmm should i watch a 3rd one?" but then i was like "you can never watch enough!" and you taught me so much the others didn't!
Thanks well explained, thanks for the comparisons with the grey scale and curves really helped understand the concept also you woke me up, was falling asleep watching other tutorials but your energy and engagement with your audience brought me back to and feeling a bit more confident to try a bit more grading to my videos.
yes definitely it's the best way to explain LIFT GAMMA GAIN. If you know everything about curves then you can understand any software with this example.
Thank you for this. I am still learning DaVinci and did not even know I could flip to the lights, darks and mid-tones section (newbie). This will help a lot.
Nice 😎👍🏼 But if you don’t want your highlights to blow out in this example, Shadows and Midtones can be adjusted to get the right look. So both of the two color wheel groups have there pros and cons depending on the clip and situation! 😊
Just the video I was looking for. Not sure if you take requests, but really like how you showed the connection with the other editing appliations. I have always wanted to know how nodes are different (or are they?) to the layers of color grading in FCPX?
Funny that you ask Ben... I actually have a whole page on my site dedicated to taking requests! Nodes is definitely a popular question since I dropped this one but feel free to go here and reiterate www.dunnadidit.com/suggestionbox
Lift: Shadows Gamma: midtones Gain: highlights When switching to Log, it’s the same thing but it’s more precise. Shadows changes darkest part of the image and highlights change the brightest parts whereas Primaries wheels does the same but larger part of the image. I prefer to control contrast with S curve and use the Primaries Wheels to add color in shadows and highlights. My go to is the faded look by raising shadows in s curve then dropping it again in Log; shadows.
That’s nearly right but it’s a bit more complicated (or simple depending on how you look at it) than that. Because when you move lift, it also affects the highlights and mid tones. And vice verse, when you move gain, it affects the shadows and mid tones too. I think I showed this pretty clearly in the video. But I agree that I personally like to do my contrast with the curves too.
Dunna Did It ahh I see what you mean, the part where I said Primary Wheels is the same but at a larger scale, yes I misspoke there, it’s not the same as Log wheels in terms of what it does to the image.
Gumby's horse! My family used to have that toy :) Also, this is an excellent tutorial; I'm definitely going to check out more of your Davinci tutorials.
