I have been EXTRA busy these days but I want to thank everyone of you for supporting and commenting. And thank you to everyone who has offered historical context and taking the time to comment so thoroughly! As I am just beginning to intentionally learn about P-Pop music groups, it has opened the door for history as well! I will continue to try to respond as I have time in these next few days but I thank you all so much! Shout out to ALAMAT!

Patience, ALAMAT will go BIG just like SB. I predicted SB in 2018 to go global and I predict ALAMAT will go global soon.
Another group to go big is New:ID.

Alamat is the essence of P-pop. Out of all the P-pop groups Alamat is the most unique as they carry with them the Pinoy culture whatever they do, their music, their fits, their attitude. I want them to be so successful because their success is the success of the Filipino culture. As usual I enjoy your reaction Joxcya! Thanks for always supporting the boys.

    • @joxcya

Hey @javis5278 They are truly unique and I hope their success goes far and wide and more people are able to learn about Filipino culture through them. I'm definitely learning myself. Thank you for the support :)

The song is about the colonization of the Philippines by the Spaniards and how the locals revolted. The boys were grouped by two to symbolize historical events:
Alas and Mo - the battle of Mactan (where Lapu-Lapu killed Ferdinand Magellan)
Taneo and Tomas - the revolutionaries the one that fought against the Spaniards.
Jao and Rji - the ilustrados/ the educated Filipinos during Spanish rule. They were educated abroad and ignited the revolution through their writing and propaganda.
In the second part of the song, alamat tells how the revolutionaries triumph against the Spaniards and how the Philippine flag was raised for thd first time (3 stars and a sun) but this victory was short lived because the Filipinos were betrayed by the same Americans who supposedly helped them win the war against Spain. America bought the Philippines from Spain and became the second colonizer of the Philippines.
I am so proud of this song and I love how Alamat tells the story of our country.

Thanks for this RV! 👏🏼 Yes this is about the Philippines history during the Spanish and American colonization period.
For their outfits: ALAS and MO represents the Mandirigma/Warriors, TANEO and TOMAS represents the Katipuneros/Revolutionary Society, while R-JI and JAO represents the Ilustrados/Educated-rich class (like the national hero Jose Rizal).
There are a lot more info in this MV. I love this PPop group 🤎🤎🤎

I'm gonna break this MV down as best as I can for you. Yes, this song is about the history of the Philippines, but in different eras. That's why the members are dressed in the different time periods (indigenous people and outfits from the 1800's) The MV covers the arrival of the Spanish colonizers in 1521, Filipinos being oppressed under colonial rule for over three centuries, the Philippine Revolution towards independence from Spain, and American conquerers in the Philippines.
0:49 - They are reenacting the "Battle of Mactan". Long story short, in 1521, the Spanish invaders arrived in Mactan island. They tried to convert the natives in Mactan island to Christianity, but the chief ruler of the island refused. They had their own culture and religion. The Spanish invaders threatened to do harm to the natives for refusing to submit to the Spanish crown (such as burning down their village, r*ping the women, etc). Of course, the natives got angry and fought back to defend their people and land. It was around 1,500 native warriors versus 40-50 Spanish soldiers. The natives were victorious in the battle, which delayed colonization for a few more decades. This is all according to a historian I follow.
1:36 - this is the start of Spanish colonization in the Philippines. The natives were victorious in their Battle of Mactan which delayed colonization for a few more decades. But the Spanish came back to the islands and begun colonizing.
1:51 - This is about the Philippine Revolution. In the lyrics, they mentioned ripping the Tax Certificates (or Cédulas). In 1896, the Filipino revolutionaries ripped the Tax Certificates, which symbolized the beginning of the Philippine Revolution towards independence from Spain.
2:26 - the lyrics referenced "two novels evoked ideals". Our national hero, José Rizal, woke the nation up in a time of crisis. Long story short, he wrote two novels (along with other pieces of work) which sparked the Philippine Revolution. Filipinos had enough of the colonial abuse, and decided to fight back.
2:31 - "We got to wave three stars and a sun". The three stars and the sun are on your national flag 🇵🇭 President Emilio Aguinaldo waved our national flag for the first time after we gained independence from Spain in 1898.
2:34 - "At least, we were unified". The Philippines was unified in the fight for freedom against Spain. But when it came to American expansion, Filipinos were divided. Long story short, the Spaniards would rather surrender to white Americans than to Filipinos... a Spanish General actually said this. So the Americans bought the Philippines from Spain for $20Million behind our backs. This is where Filipinos at the time were divided. The Americans first gained our trust by helping Filipinos "fight" the Spanish during our revolution. But little did we know, the Americans secretly planned to conquer us. Some Filipinos didnt want to fight the Americans because they "saved us from the Spaniards and gave us independence". But most Filipinos agreed that they needed to fight, once again, because they didnt need another western country to control us. The Philippine-American war ensued almost immediately after we gained our independence from Spain. Filipino lost the war against the Americans, thus the US gaining control over the Philippines for almost 50 years.

To add, it wasn't just any Spanish colonizers - it's Ferdinand Magellan's crew itself. The Philippine islands then became a part of world history as Magellan proved, upon landing on Homonhon Island up to his subsequent death at the hands of the Mactan invaders that the world is indeed round, and that you can sail going west.
