I remember teaching us since elementary to high school that American people saved Philippines from the Japanese and not until I start being independent I've learned a lot more about what really happened. And now we are slowly being colonized by the Chinese that it come up to the point that they think that Philippines is China's province. Most of our history are being rewritten and slowly we are getting it back specially the History about the Bakla(Gays) and Babaylan(Transgender) that they have high position in our community and well respected before the Spanish colonizers demonize them because they are afraid of their authority. Thank you Shawn for this video, it makes us feel not alone in these battles.

Hi thank you for reacting to Alamat!
Alamat often incorporates socio/political/historical/cultural references in their songs/MVs/wardrobes.
For song of theirs w/ deep ph culture w/c coincides w/ the MV, I suggest ILY ILY & Aswang. :)
P.S. this history is also not that well known in the philippines, nor generally taught in schools in the country 🤦🏻‍♀️

4:24 Languages, actually 😅 sadly even majority of the Filipinos dont acknowledge that these are local languages from different regions and ethnicities, separate to dialects or what would be more known as varieties of the local languages (still watching but i get what u mean with "normal" lyrics and the MV makes it that it sort of explained and gave perspective to the exoticism and all those camera to try and capture these "enchanting" natives, giving it more depth that a classic love song)
edit1: i have indigenous blood and part of the Igorot or the people who were brought to Coney island and ISTG, the prejudice that fellow Filipinos from the Capital or even other regions have against us still exists. "dog eaters and with tails" and another group highly discriminated and displaced are Filipino ancestors that mirror Africans like the Aetas (who are also mistaken as us and vice versa, the Cordillerans/Igorots). Philippines is like mini-Earth, so many indigenous groups plus colonization plus local and international culture blending and the only time we are ever "united" is the "Filipino pride" LOL like in boxing or Filipino people getting acknowledged outside of the country
edit2: tbh most Filipinos are busy with their own lives, and activism is treated as terrorism. and talks of history only ever stops at "war", not beyond it (as if the present isnt part of making history)

Activism is not terrorism. But activism is being used by the terrorist group CPP-NPA-NDF as a mask while arming the Filipino youth to go up the mountains and train to violently overthrow the government. They are deceptive in their tactics.

    • @reilin4747
      @reilin4747 Рік тому

@@purpleapple6 (this will be long, but i have a lot to say) the line is blurred with red tagging so as much as your concern is valid, militarization and labelling activists as terrorists proved the point that the government endangered the democracy of protest. Fear mongering and police tactics harmed more students than subdue terrorism from actual armed NPAs. activism, thru protest and organized rallies and lectures as well as open opposition were treated as terrorism and that led to many instances of missing, slandered, or harmed students (i know because that happened when our student council president had their name and face plastered around the city, labelled as terrorists and npa recruiters just because they led rallies as well as police going around the campus or threatening to have "subversive textbooks" of sociologists or other critical books burned from our libraries) that is beyond trying to subdue terrorism nor does it respect activism as a form of democratic protest from students or even laborers who expect better governance or accountability.
while i myself dont join rallies nor agree with how my university tend to romanticize protest (which sometimes swerve the issues into memes or sarcasm and push away the general public from listening), treating these students as terrorists or fearmongering parents that the universities are recruiting them to be NPAs as if it is pure fact did more harm than resolving or aiming for peace treaties and proper address of the problems being raised in these protests.

    Warning: Long post
In my mind, the main reason for the push back on CRT and just history of the world, is that politicians fear it will cause a "race war", or destabilize the systems that long benefited them. Of course, those beliefs say more about them than it does about the American people.
I went through several phases (and am still growing - as all sentient beings should be). I grew up in a US possession (basically, a colony) and there, the image of American Marines liberating us from the cruel and murderous Japanese was still fresh and strong in our cultural consciousness. Thus, I was raised to believe in the "exceptionalism" of America; that we were the greatest nation on the face of the earth, and an example for the world. I am half native and half Filipino. My education was only slightly different from standard DOE curriculum in that we learned a little about our history. We were colonized by the Spanish, sold to the Germans, gifted to Japan, and liberated by the USA. NEVER in any of that course of instruction, was the USA labeled the colonizer. Mark Twain very briefly believed in the nobility of "American exceptionalism", but he was smart enough to see through it. He and many of his time, did not consider Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism as imperialism. But as a inevitable expansion of the godly and noble, to be stewards of creation and to the civilize the savages of all the lands.
When I explored my other half's history, I learned about the wars for independence in the Philippines. First from the Spanish, and almost magical switcheroo to Americans. The Filipinos suffered their share of brutal war crimes and genocide, but much like the first example, the horrors visited upon them by Japan overshadowed that history. War makes strange bedfellows, and fighting against a common enemy created deep bonds between the USA and the Philippines. Long story short, Japan was defeated, and the Philippines became a US territory (colony). The thing is, MANY Filipinos are as much aware of their history with America as they are with Japan. Yet, they hold nothing against the descendants of both. They see more advantage in economic cooperation over reparation. Japan has built bridges and roads, America... well, it does stuff, but all of that to say, that modern Philippines has a policy of "friend to all, enemy to none," ...even to China. They know their history. They know it's sad, and can even be a source of anger. But it makes more sense to adopt a mindset that prevents such thing from ever happening again. The reason many Filipinos have such a pragmatic view, is because they don't have time to think about history, they barely have enough time to survive the here-and-now.
Tl;dr I'm very much aware of America's history, but I can't imagine living anywhere else. I cringe at the words of MAGA, because America only gets better when we dismantle systems that benefit some and not all. It only gets better when we know our past and prevent it from ever happening again.

hi, i've been watching all of your reaction videos ever since you started reacting to sb19. and i'm a new magiliw (new alamat fan). i just wanna say that i would understand that you wouldn't know about philippine-american war. bcos sadly, in my own country, which is philippines, not many people are aware that this happened. bcos after the massive genocide and the turning in of the filipinos to the americans as our new oppressors, they "civilised" us, and made us believe that they are our allies. education system is mostly in english and the colonization is not in the books, and if so, america is painted as "the friend" since we were one of their tight military bases. and even painted as the hero, when they came back to give "forces and rescue" when the japanese came in.
sadly, it is not so known by my fellow filipinos.

I'm so happy that I watched your RV about ALAMAT's KASMALA and the deeper theory and meaning behind each part of its video. Even me as a Filipino wasn't aware that our indigenous people suffered a lot of racism, slavery at unjustice system from white people because most of it were not also thought here in our education system. This is so enlightening and I even realized that our history is not transparent, untrue and full of lies. Its so disappointing that we can't do something about it before. While watching this video, it even made me cry for all the sufferings that our ancestors experienced in the hands of Americans whom most of us thought as a HERO that gave us FREEDOM and EDUCATION as their legacy in our country. Now that the history unfolds, may the truth won't let the History repeat itself. Thanks to you and we hope that you will continue to make difference far from the path that your ancestors chose to do.

What do you mean lyrics normal? lyricism or theme story from the lyrics? lyricism- You are not reacting to english song hello?! Its "normal" to just translate it to be understood as art of lyricism in another language is impossible to translate in another language. Just so you know they used a deep tagalog word "marahuyo" which is isn't even use ( i was born in the 90s i got to know that tagalog word just now)
Their lyricism is far from normal as a reactor be mindful proactively aware what youre reacting about! Alamat is different from your usual artist (you thought the lyrics is normal how much more the dances and music) their lyricism within a song cannot even be really grasp by us as the members are singing in their native languages not dialects.

Since it was translated to english, it is true that the more “authentic” meaning and feeling of the lyrics can change due to translation. Too bad that I can only understand the tagalog parts and not the other languages. :((
Honestly, when I read the english lyrics, I did not feel the same way or it did not exactly do justice for the concept and the song (such as lyrics), at least in the parts that I understood. But of course, overall I love this song and I reaallly love this mv and concept, just felt that english translation did not have much impact.
