- Celebrating the 50th anniversary of David Bowie's legendary Starman performance on Top of the Pops. The performance changed the course of music forever.
Recorded a day earlier at the BBC Television Centre in White City, the performance is undoubtedly one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast. It has influenced generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to UA-cam clips.
The performance launched Bowie to stardom. Thursday 6th July, 1972, is said to be 'the day that invented the 80’s’ as so many musicians who went on to be household names saw the performance and it changed their lives. Those watching that night included U2’s Bono, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux, Toyah Willcox, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and many more.

About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

Hello!!!
It's so rare to find someone better live than recorded
You mean singing live with a pre recorded backing track
sure, you keep believing that. And I will keep believing that bowie fell from the sky..an alien
@@tdmmcl1532he was cremated so that his body fumes rise up to the other planets so he can tour there to or at least that's
@@tdmmcl1532that's what I think
That was not unusual at that time, in fact what was unusual at that time was not singing well live
David looked like he was having the time of his life and so relaxed and into it.
This is an absolute Gem.
IMO he actually looks a bit nervous (trying to hide it with his Bowie flair) until 1:02 when mick joins him for the chorus

When ever I see Bowie’s earlier performances like this one, a smile naturally appears on my face, not only because I like his music so much, but due to the fact that he will go on to create so many more iconic albums and songs from here - along with the fact that David himself in the recording is not yet aware of his future feats. Long live David, and may you rest in peace.

Well, it's playback, but anyhow.....

1:37. That's it. The moment Bowie breaks the fourth wall and changes rock and roll forever. And so many lives.

Fourth wall breaker, singer/song writer and a bloody legand
The thing is, it could be so kitschy if anyone else did it, but he pulls it off with his offbeat charm and really makes you believe it

This was the exact moment as a 13 year old I became a Bowie fan for ever, watching this again 50 years later I can see why. Looking at it now with older more mature eyes I can see this is the moment Bowie knew he had really made it, they look to be genuinely enjoying every second. Loved every second of that
If there was ever someone with high-destiny guts and undeniable star quality it must be Bowie.
I never truly appreciated him until now.
I think I was 6 years old when I first saw, "Ashes to Ashes," on the Showtime, as filler. Several years before MTV started. I was alone in my living room and I was actually waiting for some kiddie film to start. But, when that video came on...Wow. I was so in awe. For a few moments, I thought I was watching something I shouldn't be. But, I felt the same way the first time I watched Monty Python a year or so earlier. My parents didn't seem to care then. So I watched this video...Then right after that video, Gary Numan's, "Cars," was next. I found myself that day. :)
Man you ppl were born in the perfect period of time
Like all good stuff happened in the past
If I was like born 30 or 40 yrs ago
I could have prolly gone to a Queen concert
Or maybe I could have seen Elvis alive
Today's is just boring songs with vulgar lyrics
I am 17 would turn 18 this year
The only good thing about his period is prolly internet
Nothing else is good
Now that I think about it even my mother wasn't born in 1972 crazy man
@@self-proclaimedanimator In most other human fields I would have scoffed at the notion that everything was better in the past as one of those tropes that are repeated ad nauseam for - literally - millenia. But I agree that current pop and rock music has reached a creative low point. The reason is unfortunately the digitization of music both in creation and reproduction. Simply speaking, you cannot make any money from it anymore and so a lot creative talent simply evaporated. Back in the days, you had to buy a record if you wanted to listen to music. It was a lucrative business to be a creative artist. Today you swap files, download them, go to youtube, etc. The artists are screwed, you cannot make a living from it and the most talented people find different professions. There is hardly any live music that is not performed by established artists. Check out bill-boards for concerts and on offer is mostly a very geriatric bunch of musicians and bands. Making music computer or even AI assisted allows everyone with minimal talent to produce something that is at least decent. In the end it just generates sludge. There has to be a lot of talent out there, there always is, but the conditions to nurture and develop that talent have deteriorated. A real bummer. We are cheated out of great new music.
This bassline is awesome. The beat and guitars. It sounds so raw, yet sophisticated and gentle. No autotune.
...and Mick Ronson's sweet right hand.

I am struggling with my academics at the moment, and I decided to take a break to listen to Bowie. This song in particular calms me down. I felt like a traveler who's uncertain about the journey but is determined to take it anyway. I love it when music makes that kind of feeling happen.
Bowie will cure any academic brain block as I did the same thing may years ago by playing Aladdinsane :)
How is it now? I have mental issues, sick, fear of anything. But i wanna pursue my dream to become a rocket scientist. I am already too old for education. But i cried everytime i listened to him and waste my time not to get enrolled
Bowie has a charm that his music can have a dark undertone but be really calming at the same time

Bowie was a natural superstar. It is quite clear when you see this relatively early recording. What a confident and natural performance on stage not yet aware of his future. He blew up into a superstar after this performance, of course because he was truly amazing and special at that time. I'm a little too young to remember this performance, but I followed Bowie from around 1982 until his death. He made a difference in the music scene and I miss him.

The 1972 performance of "Starman" on "Top of the Pops" is certainly a memorable one, the energy and charisma that Bowie brought to the stage was truly electric, and it's clear that he was enjoying every moment of the performance. His talent and unique style helped to make him one of the most iconic and influential musicians of all time, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence artists today.

David Bowie es un ser de otro mundo, definitivamente
He was a true gentleman and humble, off stage.
Too, he was the greatest lyricist of all time.
He left us with many hidden meanings that, after decades of studying his songggs, I continue to find more and more genius in his creative writing.
I much prefer this version to the album version. Bowie’s voice is so much clearer here

Plus Mick Ronson on backing vocals rules
Only thing I don't like about this version is the muddied guitar just before the each chorus. Sounds much better on the album than this version. But I'll deal with it since the rest of this version is better 🤣
What's worse about that is that the tone sounds better (slightly, but better) during the solo at the end

The 14 year old me was blessed to see this performance go out live on TOTP in 1972, just before heading out to the local youth club. Everybody was talking about it. It was played for weeks to come. VERY few pop stars have the charisma, talent and star quality worthy of the title SUPERSTAR.
David Bowie is one of those few!

Wish I could’ve sat down and had a chat with Bowie. What an experience that would be
This was the moment that changed my life. Hooked on Bowie for the rest of my life. How he is missed. There will never be another.
I still listen & enjoy many of his songs... Years are passing by, but still love all his styles.
What a musical genius.

Happy Birthday, Starman.
That blue guitar is just gorgeous and matches Ziggy’s outfit so well; Technicolor Explosion !!!!💥 😘
Bowie is easily one of the most broad musical artists I have ever seen. It’s incredible how much himself and his albums change as the years went by, a musical genius.
for me, the best version of this song. Unfortunatly still doesn't have in spotify.
Pandora has it!!!
I think you can download the audio from this video and then upload the file into your spotify, if you want to...

A witness to his absolute magic!!! Magic that never dies....salud Mr. B owie!!!🎉🎉🎉
David Bowie era um gênio musical e de performance. Essa música é belíssima e sempre me emociono quando a ouço. ❤❤❤
I hadn't had much experience with Bowie when he returned to the stars, but shortly after I came across this video and, seeing his strange beauty and offbeat charisma, I immediately understood why so many people loved him so much. Six years and an enduring Bowie obsession later, it is now my opinion that this was the finest thing ever to occur on Top of the Pops, of all time.
Love Love Starman!! 😃I'll go to Bowie photograph exhibition in Kyoto this weekend! 💕
