I LOVE how happy and comfortable they look, while absolutely nailing the performance. Charisma and good vibes beaming out of the screen. Miss him so much ❤️
The 70s were a decade marked by an explosion of colors, vibrant music and a unique style that is still remembered today with love and nostalgia. Gathering friends and family for an 70s themed party is a fun way to relive this iconic era and celebrate with lots of fun.
There is not one bad song on the Ziggy album and this song is a 50-year-old masterpiece. Some stars shine brighter than others, but David will forever be the Starman Waiting in the Sky. RIP, Mr Stardust. Your music still rocks in 2022.
Ziggy (David bowie) was so ahead of his time, you had him , the beatles and of course the rolling stones and bob dylan, so much great music reforming the thinking and actions of generations of people , music is a powerful tool , thanks for the upload!!
Bowie was a natural superstar. It is quite clear when you see this relatively early recording. What a confident and natural performance on stage not yet aware of his future. He blew up into a superstar after this performance, of course because he was truly amazing and special at that time. I'm a little too young to remember this performance, but I followed Bowie from around 1982 until his death. He made a difference in the music scene and I miss him.
There's a Starman, waiting in the sky. He'd like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds. You met us, and you did blow our minds. None like you before or since. RIP, Starman.
I'm 21 and I'm just now becoming a Bowie fan, I just listened to this album for the first time and now I understand what all the fuss is about! I've liked this song for a while though. This video for some reason made me a bit teary eyed, it's just such a legendary moment in time. Imagine being one of those people in the background dancing, I would tell it to everyone I met!
I'm 34 and never new how good David Bowe was until this year! I only ever saw him on the labyrinth as a child and he scared the hell out of me. I am shocked how incredible this song still is today! Learning to play the song makes me appreciate it even more! High quality timeless music baby!
@ Erik GT It's amazing how Bowie influenced the public - there's an emoji with his iconic lightening bolt across his face 👩🏼🎤👨🏼🎤 Where I live there are huge buildings right outside the entrance to the Holland Tunnel and one of them has a gigantic painting of David Bowie all the way on top, with orange hair and lightening on his face. It's so cool, it's massive 👨🏼🎤
I just retired teaching school. I used to have kids listen to Bowie songs about planets stars and astronauts to understand the effect of the space programs on society and culture. Kids actually liked it and made good observations about what a miracle this was to us all those years ago.
Mick Ronson is the most underrated guitarists of all time. Everyone talks about Prince, Steve Clark or Alex Lifeson but no one ever mentions him. He gave Bowie the sound that made him a legend. His solo on Moonage Daydream is one of my favourites. May he and Bowie live on forever
The 1972 performance of "Starman" on "Top of the Pops" is certainly a memorable one, the energy and charisma that Bowie brought to the stage was truly electric, and it's clear that he was enjoying every moment of the performance. His talent and unique style helped to make him one of the most iconic and influential musicians of all time, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence artists today.
this might sound odd but i have been going through a lot of things mentally and david's performances and songs are the only thing that light up my day. thank you david for everything i hope you're enjoying it up at mars
That's 500 years later, I suspect that all music will be AI generated in the near future, thus destroying the specialness of an artist and making music a mass product.
I really wish I had known of Bowie before his passing. He really just feels like someone out of this world, his music is the best I've ever heard. Fly high starman, hope you enjoy your trip across the stars.
agreed. im 13 years old and i first found out about him when i was 7 -8 (i share the same birthday as him, so curious young me found him by simple google search), and never really paid attention past. recently however, i began listening to him and i wish i would have paid him more attention when i was younger. he's nothing short of magical, that's all i can say about him.
@@allihi. I'm glad someone else from my generation likes Bowie's music I'm barely older than you but I found out about him much more recently. I fell in love with the way he tells stories through sounds and lyrics and how much soul he puts into every chord and every word. He indeed truly is just magical.
Same, I'm 12 turning 13 and I found out about him through Under Pressure and my Spotify recommendation to listen to Starman, wish I knew him before his passing too. R.I.P David Bowie, you changed music all by yourself
Obsessed with this song! most favourite Bowie song after Heroes..music has so much power..I was far from being born in 1970 but love his music so so much..love you forever Bowie!
All the verses are super cool, but when it comes to the chorus about the Starman, I feel like crying. It's beautiful that he's out there and cares about us, and doesn't want us to blow it. It's not just the words, it's the wistful longing that David sings with, and then with conviction about the children. I listen to a lot of music, but this-this is unique because... ahh, you fill it in.
I was going on a trip with my class back in '73 in Abbey Wood, a beautiful day, I think it was the science museum. What a bunch of nice kids, we were all friends and this old coach was waiting outside, the nice old driver had this playing on a radio. What a great time. We had just come out of the 60's, bloody hell what a time and now the 70's...more great times and then Elvis died and I was really sad.
David Bowie is the best. A Mozart of the 20th century, without any doubt ! I saw him in live in 1983 in Paris, I'll never forget it. Special thank to Mick Ronson, who was so important in this period !
Starman David Bowie Hey, now, now Goodbye, love Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low I leaned back on my radio Some cat was layin' down some rock 'n' roll Lotta soul, he said Then the loud sound did seem to fade Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase That weren't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive There's a Starman waiting in the sky He'd like to come and meet us But he thinks he'd blow our minds There's a Starman waiting in the sky He's told us not to blow it 'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile, he told me Let the children lose it Let the children use it Let all the children boogie I had to phone someone, so I picked on you Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too?
He was a true gentleman and humble, off stage. Too, he was the greatest lyricist of all time. He left us with many hidden meanings that, after decades of studying his songggs, I continue to find more and more genius in his creative writing.
Starman y Bowie siguen vigentes 50 años después. El número de veces que he escuchado esta canción, las primeras veces sin saber que me seguiría durante toda mi vida. Gracias!
I hadn't had much experience with Bowie when he returned to the stars, but shortly after I came across this video and, seeing his strange beauty and offbeat charisma, I immediately understood why so many people loved him so much. Six years and an enduring Bowie obsession later, it is now my opinion that this was the finest thing ever to occur on Top of the Pops, of all time.
My name is Elliot Stardust I was born in 1973 I am the son of Ziggy Stardust my father was a rock star I don’t remember my father in 1990 a strange light appeared near my house and a strange man who came out of this light grabbed me and threw me into this light and I I found myself in 2007, I’ve been in the 20th century for several years now, here’s my little story.
Mick Ronson contributed so much to Bowie's success. In his own words "You just pick up the guitar and thrash it to death" A great guitarist, performer and producer. Ronno, you're sadly missed
Bowie is easily one of the most broad musical artists I have ever seen. It’s incredible how much himself and his albums change as the years went by, a musical genius.
My dear mum loved Bowie from a young age and his music was a regular sound throughout my childhood. She passed away last year, and we had Ziggy Stardust playing at the end of her funeral. I can remember her singing her heart out to that song, especially the ending😄 I miss her so much 💔
My Mum was the same. Lost her nearly two years ago, but still got childhood memories of me and my sister sitting with her while she taped Bowie songs off the radio. Thought about having Life On Mars at her funeral, but didn't want to cry every time I listened to it. Turns out I do anyway. Your Mum sounds really great, I'm sorry they're both gone
I was a teenager when this was on TotP. My Mum thought he was beautiful. I think Bowie was loved by all generations. When he died I had a lump in my throat. I saw Moonage Daydream earlier in the week and I just loved it. ❤️. Both your Mums would have loved it. ❤️
My Mama is 90 and loves Bowie and my eldest son who has just turned 40 is a huge fan too. As I’ve already said it was the moment he broke the fourth wall on Top of The Pops in 1973 that a 13 year old me was convinced he was pointing just at me. That evening David Cassidy was erased from my heart and from my bedroom walls. By Saturday Bowie had replaced him and I’ve never faltered. Even now I have a framed Aladdin Sane album cover my children gifted me. It’s on this old lady’s bedroom wall. I asked for money this Christmas from my Mama & Sister and I’m going to have a small tattoo of the lightning bolt on my forearm.
I was at a Bowie tribute concert last week and in the audience were three or four twenty five year olds who wouldn't have been born twenty five years after this performance, yet they knew every word of the song and were dancing away with the same passion and zeal which their parents and grandparents would have had when they first heard the song. It just goes to show great songs are timeless and easily cross over through the generations.
I always thought this iconic performance deserved to be on his official UA-cam Channel. I remember seeing it on a BBC Top Of The Pops to do with guitar heroes and I was glued to the screen and how good his singing and look was. I wasn't around in the 70's, 80's or 90's but it is indeed cool to like those decade I mentioned such great great music from amazing people. Bowie is one of my favourite icons and what a tune Starman is!
The 14 year old me was blessed to see this performance go out live on TOTP in 1972, just before heading out to the local youth club. Everybody was talking about it. It was played for weeks to come. The fact that this performance made my parents feel uncomfortable and the feeling that David had given all young people the nod to be a little weird and be comfortable with it was the icing on the cake.
@@kitesurf58phil hahaha!!! When our parents were weirded out, it was definitely a hit! The generation gap. I will say, my dad was pretty cool, he bought Saturday Night Fever and Abba albums in his mid 50’s, listening with headphones. My 19 year old self realized my WW2 battle hardened dad was hip! 🤓✌️
Only thing I don't like about this version is the muddied guitar just before the each chorus. Sounds much better on the album than this version. But I'll deal with it since the rest of this version is better 🤣

It still makes me giggle watching the kid in the tank top watching himself on the monitor, oblivious of the momentous occasion this was. A wonderful piece of TOTP history. Love it xxx
I watched it back then and have several times since and you are absolutely right. I thought the same back then as I do now. You wonder where he is now and whether he revels in that bit of history "that's me - really!" or whether he lived a life of embarrassment continually denying his moment of fame. It's not as if he could even dance!!! :-)
I was 14years old when saw this , blew my mind back school next day we couldn't stop talking about him ,when we went out we dressed like him face paint as well it was fabulous ,and the rest is history God bless him ❤

This song is 51 years old and still i love it
Age of a song has nothing to do with how much one can like it - several classical pieces were written 400 years ago and are still highly loved. Right?
@@Vinterfrid That’s the point. This song was so special that it stood out against so many others.
I remember watching this live on TOTP as a 12 year old yoof and thinking how freakingcool is this. Meanwhile, Dad was squirming in his chair as I was watching in awe, and he was probably thinking what a bunch of bloody poofs. Sorry Dad, this is David Bowie, a bloody hero.
My dad said the same , and then said he would of been horse whipped for doing it forty years earlier ,🤭
Whenever I hear David bowie, i can't explain it, but it makes me believe that there is still peace in the world
I love how David puts his arm around his buddy and they sing together. That what’s I call friendship.
I think they were very fond of each other.
Rest in musical peace David and Mick.
Both are now starmen⭐️🌟🌠🌌
I LOVE how happy and comfortable they look, while absolutely nailing the performance. Charisma and good vibes beaming out of the screen. Miss him so much ❤️

what a beautiful vid.Mick belongs in the pantheon of guitarists.
The 70s were a decade marked by an explosion of colors, vibrant music and a unique style that is still remembered today with love and nostalgia. Gathering friends and family for an 70s themed party is a fun way to relive this iconic era and celebrate with lots of fun.
I lived through the 70s , and it wasn't anything like your description.

Went out and got ziggy next day still have it summer 72
There's a Starman, waiting in the sky. He'd like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds. You met us, and you did blow our minds. None like you before or since. RIP, Starman.

I'm 21 and I'm just now becoming a Bowie fan, I just listened to this album for the first time and now I understand what all the fuss is about! I've liked this song for a while though. This video for some reason made me a bit teary eyed, it's just such a legendary moment in time. Imagine being one of those people in the background dancing, I would tell it to everyone I met!

Sounds like you were a very inspirational teacher. Kudos 🤘
As a very impressionable 8 year-old, this was a seminal moment in my life.

This is one of his hit songs, and David was an excellent singer. His band did a good job playing well together. Thanks for putting it on UA-cam.

What a great time. We had just come out of the 60's, bloody hell what a time and now the 70's...more great times and then Elvis died and I was really sad.

David Bowie
Hey, now, now
Goodbye, love
Didn't know what time it was, the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin' down some rock 'n' roll
Lotta soul, he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive
There's a Starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a Starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile, he told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
I had to phone someone, so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too?
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window, I can see his light
If we can sparkle, he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright
There's a Starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a Starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile, he told me

I hadn't had much experience with Bowie when he returned to the stars, but shortly after I came across this video and, seeing his strange beauty and offbeat charisma, I immediately understood why so many people loved him so much.

He IS the Starman!
@@kitesurf58phil hahaha!!! When our parents were weirded out, it was definitely a hit! The generation gap. I much prefer this version to the album version. Bowie’s voice is so much clearer here

Only thing I don't like about this version is the muddied guitar just before the each chorus. Sounds much better on the album than this version. But I'll deal with it since the rest of this version is better 🤣

I watched it back then and have several times since and you are absolutely right. I thought the same back then as I do now.
