He actually took a song and made it sound and feel like an astronaut who's floating helplessly through the void of space into nothingness, and at the same time, somehow made it a perfect metaphor for every day life. What an amazing piece of art.

Everyone is talking about the "tell my wife I love her she knows" line but for me it's "the stars look very different today" that absolutely crushes me

And in this song, David Bowie revealed himself to be a poet. You can just picture the lyrics in your head. He was in his early 20s when he wrote this, yet was so mature. There are not even 30-something-year-old songwriters today who are at Bowie's songwriting level. RIP, Mr Stardust. Your music will continue to stand the test of time.

@@stefxcThis song, imo, carries a different meaning before and after his death, for instance. In different decades, its related to.different themes and metaphores. It also depends on where you re listening it from. The song no longer belongs to the artist. It s about drugs, or death, or adventure, or melancholy, or space age, or a thousand more things.
Exactly what i was thinking , i dont know but this song really need part 2 . About what happen to major tom after his circuit dead . Or there's any ? I really want the sequel 🥲👌
I was a latch key kid in the 70’s. I put the dinner on for the family, did my homework and listened to my older brother’s Bowie albums. Safe times and great memories. Thanks David.
I love the simplicity of the perspective of being famous: "And now the papers want to know whose shirts you wear". This is so pure and simple, being famous brings a lot of incredible things, but he only pays attention about this little part, this is so innocent, just love this part
being famous brings a lot of attention for doing something anyone can do. its a chore, and an incredibly hard one at that, just because people know who you are, and you have a lot of money in the bank, doesnt make you happy.
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol
@@My.Name.Is.Dark. then the lyrics could've been different, and it would've been a different production as well because this song was rush-released for marketing the BBC Apollo Moon Mission.

This song honestly gives me the chills and makes me feel alone. That must be how it feels to be an astronaut in space. It must feel so lonely and dark.
Space Oddity, is a melodic masterpiece. A perfect vehicle. Of which to land, from outer space. David Bowie, must be so proud. That he actually wrote this very unique and, powerful song.

Woke up with this song on my mind. I started to reminisce about the past and in my minds eye I relived the time I saw him do this in concert. I was in high school at the time. I am one of many people that were lucky enough to see this done live. He was lifted up above the audience on a large arm floating in a most peculiar way. Thanks for the memories!

"For here am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world, planet earth is blue and there is nothing I can do"........when the song breaks into this gorgeous harmony with these words, I always tear up. Our relatively short voyages into space are truly in space ships not unlike a fragile tin can. The astronaut, Tom, is at a distance from Earth far enough to feel a profound sense of being separated from everything he has known and he is completely aware that "there is nothing" he can do to guarantee his safe return to his beautiful, blue planet. Just lovely and heart rending.....

My daughter has loved this song since she was around 4. She's 18 now and still has the same good taste in music. Hope the same happens with your little girl.
The story is about his breakup with Hermoine. Him leaving what he knew and venturing into the unknown in front of him. With sadness behind him "planet earth is blue" and an unknown future ahead of him, but not looking back... "my time on earth is through".
This is probably Bowie's most famous song, it has an interesting record, it has been a top 5 hit in 5 completely different years, in 1969 it reached the top 5 in the United Kingdom, in 1973 it reached number 1 on the airplay chart in New Zealand, In 1975 it reached number 1 in the United Kingdom, in 2013 it reached the top 4 in Holland and in 2016 it reached number 1 in France, number 1 in 3 different years! probably the only non-Christmas/holiday song to achieve this

Space oddity is a masterpiece. Bowie was such a gem, we're all incredibly lucky to have been able to experience his music. Rest in peace Starman.
God Shane this music got me through a life as a kid that was bullied to such an extent that I wanted to kill myself at 13 .David got through it.
This morning I played it 5 times, when home I will play again many times🙏🙏🤗🤗And I will play this on my guitar many times as much as I want🎸🎸😎
Yes indeed a masterpiece 👌👌👌
And in this song, David Bowie revealed himself to be a poet. You can just picture the lyrics in your head. He was in his early 20s when he wrote this, yet was so mature. There are not even 30-something-year-old songwriters today who are at Bowie's songwriting level. RIP, Mr Stardust. Your music will continue to stand the test of time.
As a 30 year old person who likes to write but doesn’t do it as much as perhaps I should, I aspire to write like this one day

I read your comment as he sing it lol
He was a true music rock star
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol
