Something I think A LOT of people are missing about this light is that there are TWO hotshoe mounting holes, one on the bottom (landscape mode) and one on the side (portrait mode). Others on amazon have pointed out that you can then screw in a microphone or another accessory to this second mounting hole nice job !! Very useful !!

btw online in the viltrox site they are close in price but retail over here in asia you can get the rb08 for like 40$ which is insanely cheap for that light
It's brighter, and the diffuser is great! Also, the app is really easy to use and fast, I also really appreciate the fact you can plug in a powerbank or AC and use it all day, that makes a huge difference for me.

Love the channel and your honest reviews and advice, just interested in this as starting to build my channel. I am wanting to expand my stuff but have limited funds. I am now wanting to invest in lighting and have been looking at the best bang for my buck. I have been looking at the Aputure MC RGBWW LED. Have you had any experience with the aputure lights in comparison to this one as they look similar prices but have only heard of this light on your channel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You! This is a pretty new light, and I have to say it's awesome. The MC is great, I did a film on it when it was released, you can find it in my videos. The main problem with the MC for me is that it lacks power, it's otherwise an incredibly well thought out light, but I don't use it that much as it's not powerful enough. This RB9 on the other hand pumps out a lot more light and has most of the same functions, it lacks a magnet and it doesn't have bluetooth mesh, but using channels via the app works the same way. Both great lights, but if I had to choose considering cost and features, I'd go with the RB9.

Thanks for the great review! I'm trying to decide whether to buy this. For me, the lack of memory would be quite a hassle when shooting many small studio subjects, as I'd want to turn off the light between setups. I'd hope it can be fixed in firmware, but maybe not if it doesn't have a memory chip. I wonder if those who report theirs has a memory have newer hardware...
Is there is a workaround to this problem, maybe using the app? Does clicking on the light bulb in the app turn off the light, but leave the settings as is?
Also, another reviewer reports that his light turns off when it gets hot if used for awhile at higher settings. Have you found this problem as well?
You're welcome! Hi! So, it's possible others have fresher models, Viltrox sent me mine pretty early, so it's possible later models now have memory as lots of others have stated. Hopefully they'll update it. The app is great, but when you turn it off it'll revert back 0 settings in my experience, much like other apps. I've had no overheating problems at all. It's no doubt a light I use more than others in my studio, it's got a nice feel to it and I like working with it.
@@PhillipSkraba thank you! I had some emails with Viltrox, and they couldn't confirm whether there have been any changes in hardware. I mentioned the memory issue that some users report. They did say each light ships with the latest firmware, and they emailed me a users manual that describes how it is possible to update the firmware. I tested the app with no actual lights present (iPhone version, and the app is the recent version 4.0), and the app allows me to toggle the light on and off, and all the settings are remembered (even multiple A, B, etc. lights) when I quit and restart the app. I'm testing the app with no lights though, so I don't know what would happen if the lights were present. Are you using the iPhone or the Android version, and if you run the same tests on your app (either with the actual lights powered up, or not), are the settings also remembered in the app, as I've described? In part I'm trying to determine whether they have enabled a memory via the app, rather than via a firmware change.

Sure! It's great too as you can have it higher up, turn it on and off via the app and increase the power, colours etc! You can also power it via a powerbank so it could be up there for ages.

Received my RB9 from Viltrox so took some time for them to ship. Love it! Thanks.
Falcon eyes F7 mini just came out. You can say it’s a copy of the Aputure MC, but it’s not copy if you made it better (says Steve Jobs, R.i.P.) and cheaper ($59 at this moment on Amazon, ~50% less than MC). Best copy is being able to take a picture of the RB9 color and matches via app and the range is 2500-9000K. Also has LEE and ROSCO filters which might be the trend going forwards. At higher color temp above 8000, it may not be as accurate but MC can only go to 6500.
If you can get a hold of this (F7 mini) and do a side-by-side comparison of the MC, that would be great!

I just dropped Falcon Eyes an email, if they're game then sure, I'll do a comparison. If not I'm afraid I just can't afford it at the moment, the RS2 and Mini 2 just killed my finances 🙈😂 It does look like a pretty cool light though, that Rollflex II light looks incredible too. LEE and ROSCO filters I could sleep in, always loved them! I use a Rosco light under my UA-cam table and that's about 15 years old! Thanks for the heads up, have a great day!

Hahaha! Yeah I’m eyeing the RS2 and Mini 2 as well but bought the Canon R5 to compare with A7R4 and so I can only spend $100 or less now on lights for at least until next year.

Testing mine this morning, it’s the same as it was. However, fresher models may have had this improved, I can’t say for sure.

Hi, great video, which do you prefer this light or the Apature MC? Would something like this work for me videoing in my pup room with my phone camera, or should i get LED ceiling lights? Or what do you think of one of those circle ring lights? Thanks!
Do you need the RGB functionality? If not, you could get the Aputure F7 for the price of MC or this.. and it has 1500 LUX at 1m (this one was 240!)
Thank You! Well, from what I've seen of your videos you need light everywhere, this or an Aputure MC would not have the reach you need. They are very small lights and fall off after 1m or so, I'd recommend something bigger with a large softbox that can light a room, or doing it during the day using natural light. I personally love the Aputure MC, but it lacks any serious power I'm afraid. Ring lights also have a very short reach, so I wouldn't recommend those at all. For a pretty similar price you can get my setup that I use in my studio, it has a much larger reach and looks a lot better.
The Aputure F7 is a great light, it has a TON of power, but once again it's quite small and will have quick fall off unless you use some kind of large diffusion. I'd personally go for a Godox SL60W and a 90cm softbox, this would be a tiny bit more expensive but you'd get a lot more for your money and the light would have a much longer reach. I've actually been meaning to review the F7 for about a year now, it's been sitting in its box and I keep forgetting about it 🙈
@@PhillipSkraba would be cool to see a F7 review! I grabbed two as they fit perfect in my shoulder/sling kind of bag. One of the small dials cracked and the replacement is 10% of the price of the light, ouch, pretty sure it was a defect too xD

In the previous review of the RB08P at 3:04 - *you said u can charge it with powerbank* and u did it few times. *In this one you say that the RB08P will turn off and cant be charged with power bank.* Are you paid to promote the newer version or how the hell am I suppose to understand it?
Hi Vojtech, yes, I did say that and I immediately wrote in the description of that video that it's not possible.
Back in January I was just over 1,000 subs, so I'm guessing any UA-camr wishes to be paid at that point in his YT career. At just over 11k, I'm not even paid to promote now. So even though that sounds awesome I'm afraid it was down to human error, I was tired and thinking about a completely different light. I hope that makes sense.

So I just had a look at mine and it has always beeen on v1.3 as I didn't update it and it doesn't save my settings. Did you download an update, as I can't find one anywhere?

I just held down on the M or mode button and then cycle through it to upgrade selection and click to on and then it says “wait” while it looks to upgrade.
Then I turn it off and back on. And then tried to set it at a specific setting and turn off and back on again and the last settings is kept.
Is that what you did? Not sure if my model was factory set to the latest firmware update or not. We can try to message Viltrox and see what they say
@@nomad0714 Ahh I get you, I think that does nothing, unless you download an update from the website, connect the light to the computer and then press update. That's at least what it says in the instruction manual. I don't have memory, that's for sure, you have it?? This is so odd 😂🙈

Yes I have it but after your explanation I can only say that it might be that Viltrox’s newest version might have fixed it and maybe will update it shortly.
Another thing to try is change the setting, say from CCT to Scene and then click on the set button and turn off. After that it seems to have memory. Try that and let me know as it works for me. Hope that helps
Good review! Thanks so much! Suggestion to you for a video topic - When I was in Iceland I used a suction mount to hold my GoPro inside my 4WD SUV windshield and made timelapse as we drove. And I got really bad reflections from the inside of the car and from us inside. How about suggesting something to block reflections from behind the camera??

Attach a black cone of paper around the camera and tape it to the glass. Mount the GoPro real close to the glass to make this easier.
I was in Iceland last week, but I mounted the camera outside the car, and I used two metal lanyards to keep it safe in case it broke free. IF however you want to mount it inside, Kiwi below had a great idea, I do however have an actual tool just for that job I've been meaning to make a video on for about half a year now 🙈 I'll have to do that soon!

External mount gives a much cooler shot, make sure you buy mounts that have 3 or 5 suction cups for external mounting.

Does anyone know if they added memory to it already, so it retains its settings when you turn it off and then on again later?
So most of the people who have bought it have memory, mine may have been a pre-release model, so it's possible all the new models now have it.
Which one is better? Atomcube rx1? Or Weeylite rb9?
That isn't an easy question to answer, both lights are great! The RB9 has more effects, both have diffusion options, both have great apps which you can group lights together and control more than 1 at the same time. Both are very well built. They are very similar, it would come down to your personal preference and price. I'd have a hard time choosing between them 🙈

Hi Sebastien, you're right, I just tried it, doesn't work, I've written to them to check it out. If I had to choose between those 3 lights, I would go for the RB9. The Boling is great, but no app, the Falcon Eyes is ok, but I've had a few problems with their app, a little frustrating. The RB9 is a very new light, its app is incredible and I've had zero problems with the light itself, so for me clear winner.

@@sebastiencrego7130 Oh I know the feeling! I have about 40 of these rgb lights! The Godox is very similar, but the RB9 is about $30-$40 cheaper, better built, has more effects and is app controllable. The app is what really sells me as I sometimes put these guys in places hard to reach, being able to control them via an app and not get up on a ladder every few minutes makes my life a ton easier. The Godox has one thing the RB9 doesn't, music fx mode, but like in the Atomcube and a couple of other lights it doesn't really work very well. So I'd with a clean conscience recommend the RB9 if you're looking for one good pocket light.

how would you compare it with the Falcon Eye F7?
I used the F7 once, though I don't own it. I think they are very similar, however the app for the Weeylite is awesome, highly recommend it!

I believe the Falcon Eye F7 does NOT have the wireless control from an App. Thats weird because one model down, and one model up, the Falcon has the App !! The F7 is more powerful (maybe 1500 lux vs. 1150 lux), but without the app I think its not as "fun". Also, having a color wheel is a highly superior way to control the light.

Thank You! I come from London but I live in Poland, Lodz to be exact. When it comes to pocket lights there are so many! This one thought, it's excellent, it's packed full of features and it's pretty well priced. You can buy it straight from their website, I wouldn't worry about that at all, Weeylite or Viltrox, as it's the same company are really great and you won't have any problems. Weird indeed that they didn't put memory in it, seems like such a basic thing to have.

The RB9 has a lot more features and power. It depends what you need it for. The VL196 is just your simple CCT and RGB light, does a great job for its price though!

Is there anyone have problem with this rb9. Mine after changing mode several times, there is ringing sound from led,so i turn it off. But after i try to turn it on, it's not working, i cannot turn it on. Trying plugin to charger, there is no led display or sign it's charging. Is it broken? I inbuilt used it about 2-3 time before, and i have 2 battery bar before it problem
Oh dear, that doesn't sound good. I suggest you write to Weeylite or Viltrox and ask them what to do. They are usually very good at getting back to people, especially on Instagram. The problem is that Chinese New Year is getting started, and China closes down for a few weeks right now to party.

It's an excellent light, I use it almost everyday in the studio, I guess anything can go wrong. So Instagram is a good place, if not then email - info@viltrox.com. Right now though, like most Chinese companies they'll be closed or very limited till the end of this month.

Apparently it works, I haven't updated it since I got it though, I just haven't had the time, even though I use this just about every single day 😂🙈 It's an excellent light, I can tell you that.
