It’s wild how often “agnostics” call on God or use metaphysical language like “divine intervention” and then say Christians believe in fairies or some thing.
This video really hit a cord with me. The casual nature of the conversation and topic of how “preaching” atheism can lead to some people having an existential crisis speaks to me. I am one of those people. I wasn’t raised Christian and had a very spiritual /eastern philosophy and Buddhist belief system throughout my young adulthood. It wasn’t until I was being indoctrinated into Catholicism that I not only deconstructed from that but all my spiritualistic beliefs. I always believed in some greater power and purpose to all of this. Once I broke away from Catholicism I continued that critical thinking to everything in my life and it stripped me of meaning. Not being raised Christian I never thought about how much of a crutch any God belief could be even if vague and spiritualistic. I ended feeling like there is no reason for anything. No purpose. There’s no grand plan I can fall back on in times of struggle or doubt. I started seeing life as this inconsequential spec in the vastness of deep time and I can’t shake the idea I have no reason or purpose. I never thought I would be so dependent on such notions since I wasn’t a silly Christian that “needed” God but even the vague notion of my life leading to something or having some part to play in a grand tapestry was apparently a corner stone in my psychology. Having all that stripped away feels like having all my mental machinery taken away and leaving me with an empty shell with no means to move me forward. I keep watching all these philosophy YT channesl like Alex and others trying to find something to replace the machinery I lost but nothing is filling the void. I feel like Cypher everyday - I want to be reinserted into the Matrix because ignorance is bliss 😢😢

The void left behind when losing your faith or just belief in some meaning to it all is staggering. I tried to talk to my wife about how empty I feel. It's a dream of mine to talk to Alex Connor and talk about the interests we both possess. It's just inspiring to be able to see how young he is but certainly his excellence gets significantly remarkable over the years. I want to be his friend.
Interesting conversation between two guys that I enjoy listening to. Alex mentions the encounter between Jesus and the rich man (Mark 10). The point is that the rich man claimed he had obeyed all the commandments but his love of his money needed to be exposed. Jesus did this. It should have enabled the man to see how he had fallen short of God's standard and needed a Saviour - the man who stood in front of him! No Christian should suggest it is wrong to be wealthy because that is not something Jesus said. The issue is how much do we love God in comparison to our money, possessions, etc. And have those material things got a place in our lives that is meant for Jesus. Focussing on the Bible as a book that reveals what we need to know about God and what He would have us know about ourselves and our need of His salvation should (I think) enable us to not misunderstand it.
The core fundamental principles which underlie and transcend all of our perceived material, temporal reality, and which together guide the creation of greater quality, work together as a framework which points inevitable and inexorably towards the divine--the ultimate expression and embodiment of the greatest quality possible.
One thing.. Jesus isn't against you owning money, He's against money owning you. In the rich man's case, who was a Jew, he spoke directly to the thing that the man specifically needed to give up to follow Him.. In the age of grace, (some people are rich, some are not, it's not a prerequisite to be poor if you're saved/a believer..)
Why are the saints ascetics? Alex interprets the passage well (Matthew 19: 16-26). The apostles are surprised and ask Jesus who in the world can even be saved to which Jesus replies that for humans it's impossible but for God everything is possible. Additionally, wouldn't each of us be closer to the will of Jesus, closer to salvation, if we actually got rid of all of our possessions and if we starved ourselves like the ascetics? Closer to salvation and people still don't do it, wonder why...
First listened to Alex debate as my fundamentalist Christian deconstruction began a few years ago. His content has been terribly helpful as I search for meaning and value with my beautiful wife and children in the absence of adherence to any fundamental Christian truth claims.
I wasn’t raised YEC, but the man who helped me to see that atheism is incoherent and the opposite of logical was… his channel Inspiring Philosophy would help you to really understand the true basis of the philosophy, the starting assumptions, the consequences, and evidence. You have to understand we are all 100 years behind the current state of physics and a lot of the atheist materialist position is passe. If you only like following Alex, Michael Jones has a debate with him which you’d probably enjoy! God bless you bud
Love Alex. He can be an atheist or whatever all day long. As a believer myself, I really appreciate his curiosity. The other celebrity atheists couldn't seem to care about religion outside of seeking it's destruction.
Seeking for truth, intellectual rigor and honesty, delving deep into understanding Christianity at a philisophical and even psychological level, are all worthwile and commendable things... though not everyone has the capacity or inclination to go there. But at the end of the day, the thing that brings someone to stake the rest of their life, in some cases even lose their life, for their "faith" is not an intellectual agreement or philosophical stance, instead its an encounter and a relationship with a God and a Savior and a realization that you are known and loved.
What does it mean to be a Christian? My view as a Catholic: To believe in the life and actions of Christ the Lord, in the existence of God and also, it's not just mere belief but actions that the Lord demands of you - carry your cross, be simple, humble and helping, just like the Lord, inasmuch as possible. There are difficulties, I know, but do live a life that at least approximates to what God wants from you. Because there is no ultimate standard of goodness than God, there is no ultimate standard of justice than that of God and there is no one who can love as selflessly as God can. Because He does love everyone, he let you too have a free will and to be able to think rationally and make decisions. I know how hard it is to perceive something you can't see as a he or a she or whatever, but I use He here to refer to God the way the Bible does. Oh and besides it's nice to see how open you are, Alex! That's something I never thought an atheist would do. I despise old man Dawkins for his kind of hateful attitude and I do find it hard to like him or prevent my outbursts at him, but yeah we got no option but to love everyone equally; yet yeah, I'd rather talk to you than with a man of great knowledge and yet a brain filled with hatred towards Christians or theists in general while enjoying the fruits of such a culture shamelessly, and hence he misses the point that justifies the existence and need of God.
I wish Alex the best. He's intellectually honest and goes into conversations with good faith. I think he fails to comprehend a lot of things because of being stuck in a reductionist frame, but I really see his efforts of trying to claw himself out of his worldview. God bless you both.
I feel the same. I really felt for him when he said he'd hope someone would convince him. Being a christian since a young age, i take it for granted the fact that i have faith, while for some, it's all they want: to believe, but they just can't. Praying for him.
I think it would be more productive if you gave some examples of the things you claim he fails to comprehend. From my perspective, it’s usually his opponents in a debate that fail to comprehend a lot of things (his debate with Dinesh is a good, recent example).
@@SantiagoRK96 Alright, so what I see Alex fundamentally misunderstanding is a right hemispheric/intuitive/symbolic view of the world, or at least view of the world where the two hemispheres work together in harmony. Practically that means Alex has an analytical way of understanding the world and thereby myths and religious stories and propositions. The problem with this is that none of these stories, myths, or even propositions are comparable to scientific equations. He applies the inadequate map to the territory he's trying to understand, which simply means he can never understand it.
@@LucasvozInteresting. I consider myself agnostic in a similar line of thinking and questioning as Alex (albeit no where near as well read), but when you say his framework for deciphering the world fails, what is the right framework in your view? Love this snippet, cuz everytime I argue with a Christian I hope they can prove god being good. But reality proves otherwise better than anything a Christian has ever tried to mind fuck me with.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
I'm a huge fan of Alex. I've also been reading GK Chesterton's Everlasting Man. I bet if GK met Alex, he wouldn't have had such disrespect for agnosticism.
You've talked about men's and women's body angles during conversation a few times, does it work the same in situations like this or does it vary by context? Keeping in mind what you've mentioned about how men angle their bodies while interacting (at parties for instance), it made this discussion feel perhaps more tense than it otherwise would have. But I don't know if I'd have thought so if I didn't hear about it beforehand. Interesting to think about.
As a Christian, I wish Alex knew that God does not demand of us to become the kind of person who is willing to sell all their possessions over night. Faith begins with the belief that we need to become better and accepting God’s grace to do so. It is a journey, a ladder to climb all the way up to heaven, one step at a time. Someone wanting to “try” to be Christian can begin with the smallest of steps.
7:46 "How much have you really tried?" Every time the mormon missionaries come to my door I always say the hardest person to be honest with is yourself, and that applies to me as much as them. Forming a reasonable opinion based primarily on evidence is nigh impossible for the individual.
Matthew 7:21-22 [21]"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. [22]Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
These verses show that even those with faith will be rejected. It's troubling to me that there are people walking around believing they have a relationship with Jesus, but if he is real, he will end up rejecting them.
In my opinion, Jesus teaches the highest pursuits mankind could consider. Love unbridled. Try learning the foundation that He is the Cornerstone. Salvation makes a lot more sense in these days of materialism.
Has nobody told Alex that you're supposed to take a tab of LSD before getting into a flotation tank? I mean who in their right mind would get into one of those sober?

As a Christian, one of the several things I really appreciate about Alex is that he honestly does seem to be pursuing God. He seems to be looking for the door to knock on. I feel maybe he has even tried knocking on the door, but maybe it wasn't opened in the way he thought it might. He is open to the idea that maybe someday it will open for him. I am a strong believer that if a person works at it, strongly pursues God they will find Him, especially through Jesus Christ.
@@jaylives5791 It's been a long process. It started when I was at a Christian school for kindergarten and first accepted Jesus. Our family started going to a church that studied the bible a lot. The text was looked at as though there was a great puzzle to solve, and if someone where to work at long enough, many of the pieces would start falling in place. Patterns start to become visible. We studied Hebrew, and some Greek. I would love to say I have all the pieces and absolutely everything is answered all the time, but that is part of the beauty of it, is that it is not. That would be to say God and infinity is comprehendible by a man. There was a time I questioned it all. There was a time I walked away from it all (still held some level belief but I stopped going to church, and to be honest lived a hedonistic and self serving period of my life. The patterns brought me back. The Bible doesn't just have stories about everything being good and posh. It's actually quite the opposite. It has a lot of darkness and a lot of evil, it creates a contrast. And I feel that is something that is very prevalent in the world. It highlights that there is that which is truly good. There is that which is great, true, and so wonderful we could barely comprehend it. Then on the opposite there is evil, there are calamities, there are patterns that play out through people's lives, through governments, through societies that lead to life or destruction. If you study them enough, watch close enough and live long enough you can see them playing out.

The whole "If there is no God there is no Morality" is something that rubs people the wrong way.
Maybe it can be about both. Like faith leading to certainty, giving confidence for more faith, which leads to more certainty, and so forth. Each cycle learning more about what is, as well as what is not, or what might be, etc.
i find it hard to believe in something without certainty (probably to a detrimental level lmao), i dont mean this in an argumentative way i just want to know, but how do y'all manage this?
The grim truth is that without God there is no ultimate purpose or meaning to your life. Everything in this world passes away eventually. Neither fame, wealth, success, relationships, hedonism, wisdom, good works, or anything else will save you from the reality of death. It’s the grim reaper coming for us all. However, there is good historical evidence that Christ was raised from death and for this reason I put my faith in Him. The historical evidence strongly supports that a man named Jesus of Nazareth really existed, was nailed to a cross, and rose from death. Without the resurrection, Christianity is worthless (1 Corinthians 15:14). I believe this is true based on reason and historical evidence. Not by blind faith, I would encourage you all to do some investigation for yourself!
Damn Alex really pulls you to think from different POV's. I dont think anyone comes to belief from purely logic. We're emotional beings capable of logical thinking. In the end, no one can experience your life better than you.

Alex, is missing the point of Jesus telling the rich man to give all his wealth. Jesus knew that wealth was the wealthy man's god and when faced with the idea of giving it up, showed what was most important to that man. Jesus stated elsewhere, if you cannot put me first above all else, you are not fit to be my disciple.
With all due respect, does that not strike you as fanatical? On numerous occasions, JC encouraged his followers to abandon everything - including their families - in order to be his disciples (Mt. 10:37,38; Mt. 16:24; Mt. 19:28, 29; Lu. 14:26). If you read between the lines, it’s evident that the apostles abandoned their wives (they were married) and their kids (no birth control) for possibly months at a time in order to galavant around the country with JC. Why? 1) They thought the end of the age was imminent and 2) JC encouraged them to do so. These are the actions of an apocalyptic cult leader…

Chris, you kinda answered your own question about knowing God at the end when you were talking about getting excited about an interview in order to really crush it. You have to get excited about wanting to know God or the Universe or the meaning of life, whatever you want to call it, the same way that Jacob Collier is so excited about sounds and feelings, aka music. That’s how he’s become a genius at it, by opening his valve of reception to the energy and knowledge of music. You can do that with any subject. Get excited about it, open your flow, and let it in, let it come through you. And you can do that with God. It’s such a personal intimate knowing that you can’t really get through words from other people. You have to experience it yourself to really know. That glow that you feel when you’re happy, you can call that God. And it’s not some dude in heaven. It’s an energy, a frequency, of unconditional Love. You probably feel it a lot of times and don’t know that that’s what it is. 😊🤍

I love you Alex - thanks for our honesty which is far greater than most Christians, and your humble heart
🤣
THIS! Being rich is all well and good but it becomes a sin when becomes an idol and becomes your god.
@@kestrelthesongstress I don’t care what you think Jesus thinks.
Lol why did you have to make a point of the rich man being a jew? Whats that got to do with the message?
Jesus was just a man.

It works with these two guys because they're both naturally charismatic and have good chemistry. Not sure if it would work with every guest though.

Matthew 7:21-22

[22]Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
These verses show that even those with faith will be rejected.
It's troubling to me that there are people walking around believing they have a relationship with Jesus, but if he is real, he will end up rejecting them.

If you don't mind answering, what did that process look like in your case?
