Today we’re going to be looking at the 21inch version of the Apple iMac (iMac 21.5). There are currently three different versions of the 21inch iMac. The new base model, for people looking to get into the Mac ecosystem, the version with Intel Iris Pro graphics and the top of the line version with the Nvidia GT750M graphics card. While we’re going to be looking at the version of the iMac 21.5 with the Nvidia graphics card, these three models share quite a lot in their appearance and features. Where they differ though is in their performance. The version of the iMac 21.5 we’re testing today is equipped with the core i5 processor, 16GB of ram and a 1TB mechanical hard drive. Apple does allow you the option of upgrading certain processor, memory and storage options. One thing to remember with this version of the iMac 21.5, is that RAM needs to be upgraded when you buy the computer. Its almost impossible to open the casing and upgrade the RAM later.
Lets take a closer look at this iMac. The first thing you’ll notice about this computer is that its design is very minimalistic, in typical apple fashion. There’s very little going on, the keyboard and mouse are wireless and so its a complete desktop that takes up very little space on your desk. This makes for a very efficient workspace. The whole computer’s body is made from beautifully-machined aluminum with a full hd IPS display on the front. The screen has this black bezel around it with an HD facetime camera embedded in the center.
The screen tilts about 45 degrees on its base and the bottom edge of the iMac 21.5 has cooling vents machined into it. The top edge of the iMac 21.5 also has a microphone embedded into it. There’s a second microphone embedded into the rear curved aluminum cover. Under that are an apple logo, the hinge for the stand and the main cooling output vent. When it comes to ports on the rear of the iMac 21.5, there’s a headphone jack all the way to the left, followed by an SD card slot, four usb 3.0 ports, two thunderbolt ports for displays and other accessories and an ethernet connector. The iMac 21.5 is WiFi enabled so you might never end up using the ethernet port. In the center you have the port for your power cord which neatly snakes through a circular cutout in the base. And right under that port is a kensington lock slot. All the way to the right is the slightly recessed power button. The base is very well designed and is also machined from solid aluminum. - Наука та технологія

+Phalanx Metro Definitely a great choice!
I love this review. Thank you for mentioning startup speed, whether to upgrade the ram at purchase or not, and even the experience with the fan. I am opting for this iMac. I'm so excited!

Very helpful review. Thanks for the heads-up about the difficulty upgrading RAM. I had planned to buy this computer and upgrade the RAM later. Now, I need to re-think that strategy.

ReviewLamp.com I did :)
This is the model I want to get! Thanks for pointing out that the RAM needs to be upgraded at purchase. I upgraded it after on my iMac, so I figured it would be the same.
***** Glad it helped. Please subscribe to stay tuned.
Hello and thanks for uploading this video I really like it it was so helpful , I've a question, I'm a Photoshop & video editor user , if I'll buy the 21.5 , 2.7GH i5 is it gonna work good with me or not ?! And thank you so much
Alaas blog It should work just fine. I would recommend buying the version with the Nvidia graphics card and not the version with the Intel Iris built in graphics card. Please subscribe for more reviews.
what video did you use from the nature clip website? i like the music they used.
Rafael Guerrero The clip is from Natureclip.co.nr

Great review! I'm thinking of buying one in a few weeks. My question is, which one would be better the 21.5 in 1.4GHz or the 2.7 GHz??? I will be using this mainly for school, uploading photos, browsing the Internet etc. Not really for gaming or hardcore video editing, just simple uploading photos and vids to watch later.
Thank you.
nokturnalmortom666 As a general rule of thumb, faster is better. However, for what you're describing, the 1.4GHZ version will work perfectly. Here is the link to that unit on Amazon: amzn.to/1NMKGP4
Thanks for this review, I be been between the 27 inch and this model and now I'm confident I can go with this one and use it for video editing, this is the first review that actually helped
Angelica Grace Glad it helped, Angelica. Please subscribe to stay tuned for more reviews.
Hi I am also deciding between 21 and 27 inch.. what made you choose the 21 over the 27 ?
Honestly It was the money, I had just purchased a car and had a little less then what i had planned and i didn't want to have to wait longer lol. I really was only buying the computer to edit youtube videos and figured i didn't really need the huge screen and that i was just going to be over doing it lol. I bought it a week ago and seriously do not regret it at all. the only thing I'm sad about is that you can't upgrade the ram but it runs like a dream. i got the $1499 one.
Thanks for your comment Angelica Grace !! Actually i was interested in the 27" for screen size.. But its so pricy! Guess i dont really NEED a big screen. I would prefer upgrading the features on the 21" :)
Yeah thats a good idea! :D the 21 inch seems way bigger when you sit in front of it too!
Yes mate .. Thanks
***** Doubt you would need any anti virus software with your mac.
How much does it cost ? And imac 27" price too
Hey, nice review! I have got one question, does the screen feel small while using video editing apps or similar apps with lots of content in them? Thanks in advance :)
The screen size is perfect in our opinion. However you can upgrade to the 27 inch if your budget allows. You can also use a larger thunderbolt display alternatively.
Thanks :)
Hi. I already liked, and subscribed. I was wondering. Is their a 2015 model out? With the highest model of the 21.5, can you do graphics and designing on it? I'm an inventor, so I'd need to be able to do that. OR would you recommend something else? Like a mac book pro 13" with retna display. Thanks.
Nrfa There is a late 2014 model, but the addition was a lower-end iMac. The highest-end model of the iMac 21.5 ( amzn.to/1IutqhY ) will be more than sufficient for what you're describing. The discrete graphics card that comes standard with the higher-end version will handle software like AutoCAD and Solidworks. I would definitely recommend the higher-end iMac over the Macbook, purely for pricing and better ergonomics. Thanks for liking and subscribing. Hope that answers your question?
Forgot about that. Thank you kindly.
Nrfa You're welcome.
I cant decide if i want this or an all in one pc
I think id perfer windows but i cannot find any all in one pc with a build quality or screen even close to Apple..
Do you recommend the track or mouse?? I really want this for homework, and editing videos..do you think it's good enough? Or go one version up??
89misselle The mouse is a bit better for day to day tasks, but it all depends on the user. For homework and basic video editing this computer should work just fine.
Nice video. Please could you answer my question? Im looking to buy a mac for regular home usage like browsing, watching videos, mail, occasional video, photo editing with builtin imovie and photoshop. Will the second model with 2.7 ghz with intel iris pro graphics be sufficient or should i get an upgraded harddrive or ram? TIA
drraghul Thanks! The second model should work fine for the uses you are describing. I would upgrade the RAM if possible. As far as the hard drive is concerned, the standard hard drive is fine for most applications. Please subscribe.
Wow. Dint expect a reply so soon. Thanks a ton. Subscribing right away. 👍🏼
Why do you use the dock that size?
Thank you for posting. Do you think I can edit 720P video on Final Cut on this model?
Yes, absolutely. You can even edit 1080p videos without any issues at all.
Thank you.
Hey man, how are you? Nice video! Can you answer me this? I want to buy this imac but I am not intending upgrading ram to 16. I can only afford 8 gb ram. Will i be able to edit 1080p videos and writing music?
Is there any change that 8 gb ram won't get the job done?
xlis vangelis Thanks! It will still be able to edit 1080p videos without any issues at all. It will certainly be a bit slower than the 16gb version, but it will still perform very well. The NVIDIA graphics card is what makes all the difference for video editing. Hope that answered your question? Please subscribe.
ReviewLamp.com thank you my friend! i sub.
Do u need to buy a coumputer with a imac or do u just connect it to wifi... I was really considering buying one but most vudeos and websites don't mention it.
No you do not need a separate computer. The iMac is a computer.
I am a photographer and I am looking in to upgrading my Mac Laptop into an iMac. The 21.5in with the NVIDIA graphics card is the one that I am considering, since my work flow is growing. What would you recommend, the one with the NVIDIA graphics card or the iris pro graphics card?
jimhkim62 Definitely the NVIDIA version. The graphics card speeds up Photo and Video editing significantly. Please subscribe for more reviews.
Can I edit 4k video on this ? 4k raw ? Thanks for the review
HuseyinKarakullukcu Yes you can. But with larger finished movie lengths (10mins+), the computer will process things a bit slower. It also depends on the data rate of the clips you import from your camera. But you will definitely need the version with the stand-alone graphics card and at least 16GB of RAM.
How many pics,
Videos,
And documents can I download and save if I just got the 8G memory?
Thx
Nrfa The 8GB memory is the RAM or Random Access Memory. This has no connection to the amount of data you can store. These computers come with a standard 1TerraByte hard drive to store your data. This is usually sufficient for most people. And if you need additional storage, you can use an external drive like this one: amzn.to/1EujsGU
which machine (imac) would you recommend me as I would like a fast & reliable machine so that I can edit my family videos & photos. I know I'm not professional but still don't want something with bare minimum that might be useless in a year or two year.
The base version of the iMac should work fine for light video and photo editing and day to day tasks. Please subscribe
Does the ram or memory card come with the Mac to put in ur computer
The RAM and memory are built into the Mac. You do not need to install them.
¿For what activities you recommend that imac?
***** Light to medium video editing, photo editing, audio editing and day to day computing tasks( web browsing etc.).
Do you think this computer would cope well with programs such as after effects and Maya (3d animation software made by autodesk). I'm an animator looking to upgrade my macbook pro which is running to slow for me.
Fabian Morison Yes. This should work just fine for that purpose. Make sure to buy the version with the NVIDIA graphics card. The link to that unit is in the description above.
ReviewLamp.com Thanks for the advice! Im thinking of upping the core to i7 for another $260Au reckon it's worth it? Cheers again for the quick response :)
That is a worthwhile upgrade, if you have the budget for it. Either way, we'd recommend getting 16gb of RAM.
Would it cope with occasional HD video editing for UA-cam without the 16 RAM upgrade?
It will. But we still recommend upgrading to 16gb of RAM. The performance is better with the added RAM. Please subscribe
I live in Glasgow my plug holes are different will I be able to work it.
+Skillz Got Real! Yes, the version sold there should already come with a compatible cable. And the computer works on any voltage: 110v or 220v
+ReviewLamp.com thanks!
can i use autocad or porgramming apps in this mac without problem?
+Harat Santillano Autocad is definitely available for the mac. Programs like Matlab, Simulink and Arduino are all compatible with the Mac. But it depends on what software you use.
Cant wait gonna be getting the imac 21.5 inch with the nvidia graphics card but instead of 8 gb of ram im gonna updrade to 16 gb
Posted this before I watched the video and im getting the same mac as the guy in the video
Is this Imac much smaller then the 27 inch one. I' wanting to use it for basic photo editing, word processing etc but am not sure whether I'd need a bigger screen. I'm also on a VERY tight budget so would it be better to keep saving more money for the top of the range one, or would I be ok with the mid range one? I hope this makes sense. Great review btw!!!:)
Finn Robinson Thanks! Smaller is very subjective. But the screen is exactly 6 inches smaller diagonally. The 21 inch model will work just fine for photo, video editing and word processing. 21 inch screens are more than enough for most people. For the applications you are describing, the base model of the 21 inch version should work just fine. Here is the link to that unit: amzn.to/1yCtmTW
!!thanks so much!!
i have a question!! i really like this desktop ...i work with photoshop and also will be editing videos and making websites using final cut pro for videos my questions is ...is the desktop more powerful than the macbook pro? im trying to decide between macbook pro laptop and imac desk top and dont know which one to pick! i really dont care to have a portable laptop i just want to know which ones more powerful for what im doing thanks!!!!
Miss Alicia That's a good question. I will try and address it using an example on either side. I will be comparing the top of the line 21inch iMac($1499) to the top of the line 13" MacBook Pro ($1799). I would recommend the 21" iMac for the following reasons, a bigger screen (21inch vs 13inch), a stand-alone graphics card (better for video and photo editing) and a lower price. Now the MacBook Pro has an advantage in terms of portability. But if you don't plan to travel a lot, the 21" iMac is a really good solid option. This is the version of the 21 inch iMac I am referring to: amzn.to/1SQ4YKi
Hope this helped? Please subscribe
ReviewLamp.com thx so much!!!!
Glad it helped. Please subscribe if you haven't already subscribed
ReviewLamp.com I HAVE.... thanks again i have one more question i would love for you to answer ....if i want to get the top of the line version with the NVIDIA graphics card for video editing particularly ....i think the i5 processor is great but i have to decide between upgrading the ram to 16gigs or upgrading from a hard disk drive to a flash storage ....in your opinion which one would be more important to upgrade if i had to pick one.....ram or flash storage(particulary for video editing) !?
I would definitely recommend the RAM. For the tasks you are describing, the regular hard drive is sufficient. The RAM is definitely more of a worthwhile upgrade.
Hello do you need any internet security for IMac
Thanks..
***** You mean software like antivirus software?
do you know what the pixel pitch of this compute screen is?
Kelsi Kirby Apple doesn't state the pixel pitch. However, considering it is a 1920 x 1080 display that measures about 21.5 inches diagonally, you can calculate the pixel pitch. Using a pixel pitch calculator, that worked out to a PPI of 102.46 and a Dot pitch of 0.2479 mm. Hope that answers your question. Please subscribe
Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card to nvidia from intel iris pro?
+Eric Gundz No, that has to be done when purchasing the computer.
Is this iMac good for gaming???
I dont think iMacs are meant for gamig
Hi
I know nothing about pc's. What is this machine like for gaming?
+54spatula Its pretty good for gaming. Should handle most graphics-intensive games without any issues. I'd recommend getting this version if you're planning to use it for gaming: amzn.to/1kzw0tG
+The Ymid Macs are not built for being beaten up by games! thanks :)
The Ymid im getting this imac for christmas
hepful review but what about me buying the iMac 27 inch early 2014
XGamer-GirlX X1235X Thanks. It depends on your budget and what you plan to use it for.
ReviewLamp.com What do you plan to use the computer for?
anything it lets me like i mean if it does not laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag
I doubt it will have any lag for day to day use, as we stated in the review.
oh okay because i WILL get it so i don't know much about it and thanks
Can you tell Me which app is Open In Last
Parthesh Patel The last App open was Final Cut Pro X.
Can I add external speakers to this machine. Thanks!
Ben Stern Yes, you can add speakers.
ReviewLamp.com Thank you. Would I use the headphone jack for that?
Yes, you could use the headphone jack. An inexpensive speaker set like this one would work just fine: amzn.to/1rJYXjr
ReviewLamp.com
Once again, I thank you for your help.
is it possible to upgrade the ram from 8GB to 16GB?
+Robert Stokreef No it isn't . The RAM is factory installed
Can anyone tell me why people say imac is not good for games? because its specifications are great..
An 8gb iMac is perfect for gaming normally without big asks
MattMattMatt Cool but i´ve already heard people saying that the mac os runs games with a worse quality than windows.. is that true?
Fernando Zabaleta Imac isn't ideal for gaming because the base models dony have a dedicated graphics card but if your going to get a mac and do some gaming on it you would want to get the one with the nvidia graphics card and the library of games on the mac isnt as large as the library for Windows based computers
Hector tavizon ok thx
Fernando Zabaleta Sorry for the late response. A 8gb MacBook Pro runs Minecraft at 120 FPS ill have to check the specs because I dont know them.
