Outside of the lackluster story, and the atrocity known as the Time Eater fight, I really love Sonic Generations. The one Meta Era game (outside of Mania) that I truly enjoy.

Definitely one of the best Sonic games. It’s the only Sonic game where I think the gameplay is nearly flawless.

9:45 Planet Wisp is the longest level in the game though. I think the minimum amount of time it takes for the average person to beat the stage and get an S rank is between 5 to 6 minutes. On my first time it took me 8 minutes to beat the stage and I got a B rank.
That being said, I agree that the ranking system in this game sucks.
Funny you mentioned that you got a B rank for 8 minutes cause I remember watching someone play the level and finish in under 8mins 46 secs and have only 18 rings after getting hit a lot and they still got an S.
At that point I was convinced that the ranking system is just broken.
I think cuphead handled the ranking system perfectly. I'm not going in detail but an S rank on a boss was a sign of extreme dedication.
who even cares about the ranking system is the gameplay and story and voice acting and engine and LITRALLY EVERYTHING ELSE that counts

Sonic forces as an example. Bland story it's just a punching bag. So are colors. Sonic unleashed is always being praised for its story. So I think it matters(opinion btw and this is respectful disagreeing)
Gens is the only one of the 2 meta era games where I really don’t mind the dialogue ,some jokes actually give me a chuckle

I can't tell you with a straight face Sonic Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game but I ain't gonna diss Colors for having the exact opposite of what I want from Sonic.

Unleashed is my favorite, But as far as gameplay, generations does the best job at showing who Sonic as his Core. But that Story is dog water. And that final boss is shit
What story?
The only thing about Generations' gameplay i don't really get is the drift. It feels very inconsistent for me. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Still really fun though.

@@ayrtonjoga I feel like Generations' a little too tight, like, it makes a way too tight turn imo. Then again i'm not used to it....And i agree, at least Generations let's you do the drift by yourself.
This and Sonic Unleashed were the games that got me into Sonic. I love Sonic Generations and it is my favororite Sonic game of all time.

As awesome as this game is, I do wish there were more then just one zone representing each mainline game. Heck if "Sonic Colors Ultimate" does well (which I REALLY hope it does well) maybe we can get "Sonic Generations Deluxe" with more zones.

I really loved playing this game, it was a lot of fun and a good trip down memory lane! Didn’t really pay attention to the story though, I probably couldn’t even really summarize it for you that well. But overall a fantastic experience.
this game's got some really good level design, some of the best out of the series and is my favourite sonic game, the moding community for this game makes it easily the best buy, if i had to pick one sonic game out all and i could only play one of them i'd pick this game, also with adventure sonic being planned for this game, during early-mid development, just makes me wonder how sonic team would've handled bringing back the adventure, how the level design would've been, controls etc, with this game's really good level design, modern and classic, i'm sure they probably would've handled it well, i reckon modern sonics levels would've been more like unleashed, if adventure was in the game, most of his levels are really open, especially seaside hill, but anyways this game is god-tier

This might be the best Sonic game I’ve ever played. I go into Sonic for the gameplay, and this game perfects both styles of Sonic’s gameplay.
But the final boss still sucks.
The boost games are most of the time good until forces

I'm a simple man
It's funny because this was my first sonic game I got when I was a kid so to me the game has identity since I was introduced to all these sonic levels from generations. This is my equivalent of adventure. I see generations in a better light than I do adventure and vice versa for adventure kids.
Really insightful video. This game has been on my steam wish list for quite sometime now. Definitely gonna get it when it's on sale since it goes dummy cheap
I feel like they should have added 3 more Zones with brand new stages and representing every era that Generations represents. The first Zone would be focused on the things that you can find in the Classic Era, the second Zone would be focused on the things you can find in the Dreamcast Era like they could combine the setting of City Escape And Speed Highway with the level ending with Sonic going to the beach side of the city to represent Seaside Hill, and I guess for the Modern era it could take the crumbling buildings from Crisis City but using the building style of Rooftop Run is a place that looks pretty similar to Planet Wisp. Just to give Generations more levels and I guess an identity.

15:07 yeah I can’t blame you, Classic sonic is fun, and he doesn’t feel slow, he feels very fast compared to most classic sonic games.
That and the spin dash really helped make classic sonic feel like the trailers where he was keeping up with modern Sonic.
One thing I will say about the Double Ganger races, is that they kind of act like a “master mode”. The races are still easy, but if you want that “S Rank”, you actually have to finally learn the stages. You have to learn the shortcuts, and the in and outs of the stages. Maybe that’s just me, but these races kind of replicate that “Sonic games are easy to play, but hard to master” formula you always speak of, which I LOVE how you speak about by the way. Thanks for the video!

I’ve always thought that the various pathways could have been worth something if there had been a multiplayer mode. You race with up to 3 other players on randomly selected stages. This could have made the pathways a lot more important.

I agree with that entirely. Yes, it's one of Sonic's best games, but it's not the best. It has some flaws here and there. Other than that, I still think Colors is the best boost game in my opinion.

Really curious on why you have Colors as #1. In my mind, Gens and Unleashed have a better sense of speed.
@@RyanTheDark Unleashed may be my favorite as well. The combo of fun boosting stages and cool werehog fights/ platforming puts it up there.
Most complain that only half the game is good, but in my mind, the werehog is fleshed out well enough, and is fun.
Generations was my first Modern Sonic game. It was a great intro into the 3D Sonic games while also having the classic gameplay that I had been introduced to with Mania.
Also I totally agree with you on the whole not comparing Sonic to other platformers because I made that mistake playing a Sonic game for the first time and it really threw me off. Tbf, I was also attempting to play with my laptop keyboard… I learned pretty quickly to use a controller. But like even with the controller, there is so much happening in Sonic games that you are having to push multiple buttons all at the same time and with perfect accuracy. It takes some serious hand eye coordination and quick thinking.
Fun Fact:
There’s also another thing of content you can do, if you hold the back/select button in the little red collection room, it will drop you down into a golden trophy room to where u can enter codes to get cool 3d models of the characters and stuff (I got the codes by searching them up honestly lol)

But seriously, it was a good video. And as for your problem with the ranking system, I'd recommend playing the doppelganger missions for every stage. The races themselves are piss easy and they're a bit convoluted to get to, but the S ranks are MUCH more difficult and satisfying to achieve.

Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations are not only my favorite 3D Sonic games, but they are among my favorite games of all time.

@@iceman92211 Unleashed’s day stages are more 3D, yes but it’s almost entirely linear quickstep sections. Colors and Generations by comparison, despite being less plentiful, the 3D sections are much larger with a higher emphasis on 3D platforming.
Being someone who’s usually intrinsically motivated in games, the ranking system never bothered me too much, but I did realize how bad it was after playing Adventure 2 and Unleashed.
I find those alternate routes to improve for myself and my own times, but the ranking system of Unleashed gives me more incentive to. Unleashed is hard, and I enjoy that about it.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is the goat of Sonic games
What pushes this game to Masterpiece status for me is the ability to play a ton of music from previous Sonic Games and being able to play them within the stages. Live And Learn, Metal Harbor, Kingdom Valley etc etc etc YES PLEASE!
I think of the Boosting games like they were Rhythm games: I just go through them slowly, exploring and memorizing the paths, getting used to the timing and obstacles, them I start making my real attempts at perfect high speed runs, with as much badass spectacle as I can manage.

After playing this game for the first time last week, I see why it's so highly regarded. I had a blast.
I think the best way to describe the Classic Sonic gameplay in this game is "Chunky". I kinda compare it to peanut butter. The OG games are like creamy peanut butter, buttery smooth and always a delight. Generations is like crunchy peanut butter, it's very close to the other but has its slight differences. It's not for everyone, but it has its fans, like me.
Despite being different, the classic stages were awesome and I especially adore how the levels twist, loop, and wrap around as you play when you turn corners or jump into the background. They're an absolute delight and I legitimately want that to be the future of Classic Sonic. It feels like a proper evolution of how the levels are designed in presentation and I will take this games presentation over Superstars any day of the week.
Also, the modern remix of City Escape somehow goes even harder than the original. That guitar during the chorus is heavenly!!!
At first i thought unleashed had tue best level design for the boost. Until i managed to speedrun Planet wisp act2. You feel so good when u manage to jump platform to platform using air boost and stomp. when u wait a little for the chainsaws so u can boost inbetween them. And it was the only level in the whole modern era were enemies could be a threat and not just things to give u boost
What I think is that Classic Sonic is not trying to look like or control how he did in the 90's, but make it FEEL like how he played in the 90's and my big brother likes this change, he's obviously older than me and has played Sonic games before I even existed so I trust this opinion

The animation and art style of the game is good so I'm pretty mad that lost world/froces ruind the art and animation for sonic hopefully Rangers gets it right along with other stuff.

I think Sonic Generations is a GREAT game, but I wouldn't put it above Sonic Unleashed! I think Sonic Generations had such a great idea, Sonic going back in time from all his previous experiences, with his younger self, which to us is suppose to reflect all of the stages that WE played and remember so far, just to celebrate his 20th anniversary! Personally, I think it was a FANTASTIC way to celebrate it! And I've been doing this since 2018 now, I always think of a Generations like experience in my head too, when I go back in time to all my fun and meaningful experiences, and places I've been, from back when I was little, up until now! *IF* you guys get what I'm saying!

You can actually purchase the shield upgrades for classic sonic from the ability shop and take them to the proper zones instead of just finding them in the side missions

you mentioned the game "sonic and leashed" a few times here, and that game isnt that known, so for all of the confused viewers, I'll explain. so sonic and leashed is a sonic game that came out in 2008, in that game Sonic turns into a werewolf, and when he lands on the earth he meets a pink guy and names him "leashed" sonic and leashed then go to greeceland, where they meet an angry ice cream seller, who tells them that tails is actually at the town, so they find tails and fly to spagonia to meet eggmun, but turns out hes been kidnapped, so they go to mazuri, and then leashed finds eggmun, so sonic fights him and sonic and leashed go to the first gaia tem'hul, where they restore the chaos emeral. sonic and leashed then go all around the world to fix the chaos emeralds and bring peace to the world, in the end they go to eggmun lund, where the last temp'hul is, then eggmun awakens dark gaia, and leashed makes a barrier and makes a big robot from the temp'huls, and they fight dark gaia, in the end supra sonic and leashed beat darkened gaia, and restore the planet fully, then leashed says goodbye and sonic runs in the sunrise in the greeceland, with knuckle in the plane flying behind him

It needs more stages. A CD stage, an Advance 2 stage (that's Cream's debut game so...), a Shadow the Hedgehog stage and a Rush stage. They forgot about Big, Omega, Marine and the Babylon Rogues.
Only discovered your channel now and really interesting video so far but this one I kinda hate cuz when I was little playing this game on my Xbox360 I had a couple A rank on some runs because I was really bad.
And you saying your really bad but still got S rank makes me feel like I was super trash at this back then T-T. It's unfortunate that my 360 passed away because I have no use for my Sonic games anymore so I sold them but I think I will buy Generation back on pc. (with the added bonus of mods which allows many things like playing Unleashed day levels with Modern Sonic because Unleashed isn't available on Steam and I really don't want to dowload an emulator to run the game with.)
Generations is by far the most flawless 3D Sonic game. Amongst the boost titles, Unleashed is more ambitious and Colors is (arguably) more refined, but Generations is definitely the best, all things considering. Still love all of them though.
