I honestly just go back and forth with Sonic Unleashed and Adventure 2 and I just love those two so much.
Yeah about that I feel the same way because the risk and reward gameplay both games have is Phenomenal
Grind railing is the best in adventure 2 and Unleashed because they used grind railing the best at making the player take risks and the reward for those were mesmerizing!
Both are so fun but the darn ghost make me not wanna play sonic adventure 2

Sonic Adventure 2 is just my favourite because it manages to balance being an awsome replayble game while also having a late 90's action movie story
Sonic Unleashed is definitely my favourite Sonic game, of all the ones I’ve played. I just think the story, certain gameplay mechanics, and other elements are the best I’ve seen from the series so far. But I was really torn between this and Black Knight on the poll. I love Black Knight and undoubtedly played it the most

I haven’t touched the Storybook games since 10s, but they kinda just seem inferior to the mainline games. 🤷🏽♂️
It's probably a personal thing, but Sonic Unleashed was the first ever game I ever played on a console, that's why I have this deep bonding with it, I really liked the concept of the Werehog, and losing was actually your fault. While, yes the Werehog Stages were stupidly long and the collect to progress Was annoying as hell, I really loved this game. When I first saw all those shit talks and the overall Bad Reputation it first had I was literally heartbroken (like literally literally, I started crying in a corner, grabbed my Phone and was trying to convince people otherwise XD, BUT REMEMBER I was like 6 y/o). Now seeing this rated as the second best Sonic Game of all time is so freaking heart warming to me. Things like Eggmanland becoming a legit thing, Super Sonic, and freaking attack on titan Chip, were things I geniuenly loved, and still love today! (And get back the Quick Time Event Ramp from Unleashed, like every new Quick Time Event ain't Even challenging anymore)
Black knight is a top 3 sonic game imo. Ppl like to call the controls clunky but if you mastered the movement and sword mechanics, you can very easily maintain top speed with little loss in momentum. I felt like out of all the sonic games in had one of the highest in terms of skill expression
i think the reason sa2 always wins is because it has a balance of good gameplay, good story, and fun side content
I feel like the aesthetic is a big part of it too. The art style, the setting, the characters (especially shadow). It has that cool edge to it that in my opinion exceeds adventure.

That and it was the most appealing game to this age of Sonic fans demographic. You know being the highest grossing Sonic game on any Nintendo console ever. So you have the nostalgia helps too. But the side content only makes it better I agree

I aint afraid to say 06 was my favourite game… In terms of Sonic’s physics animations and design- He was given more- Realistic proportions when attacking enemies and running. Story lacked but with more work that could’ve been one of Sonic’s best titles.

I'm so glad sonic generations made top 3 it's the sonic game I grew up with. After playing all the sonic games generations still holds a special place in my heart. I feel like generations is always overshadowed by the bigger games like Unleashed, Adventure, Adventure 2. I'm glad to find out so many people agree with me.

Woo Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite game of all time so I'm glad it won! Sonic unleashed is one of my favorites too! Disappointing that Adventure 1 wasn't higher up though.
I feel the adventure games had that "I'm cool" attitude. While unleashed had this "I'm bad ass" attitude.

@@thaneros Unleashed is most definitely seen as a "Dark age" game, it was hated by both critics as well as the Sonic hatedom on release (false fans in hedgehogs clothing), the story had high stakes, the game had a big budget (just look at CGI intro cutscene) and need we bring up Perfect Dark Gaia essentially being a lovecraftian abomination?
@@jasonblack2477 And Eggman with Orbot and Cubot? I love Unleashed but to say it had a good story throughout the entire game is a big reach. It had an awesome intro and probably the last great ending in the series. But you really remember all the events that happened inbetween? Like I said I love the game but its story was prototype meta era.
I’m gonna give my top 5 along with my scores and reasonings why
1. Unleashed: 10/10 (Perfection of boost gameplay and level design. You get a real sense of speed controlling Sonic and I’ve never seen a speed platformer this good. As for the Werehog, I genuinely love the levels. I thought the combat got WAYY better the more I played and the platforming in these levels were really solid. In fact the only gripe I have is the combat song being the same every time, but I actually love these levels.)
2. Adventure 2: 10/10 (Best story in a Sonic game and gave us Shadow. This game has some of the best platforming in video games period. Sonic and Shadow’s levels were nothing but perfection. I loved the mech levels because blasting everything was a ton of fun and the platforming in these levels were really good. For the most part besides Mad Space, the Knuckles and Rouge levels were great. I can deal that they took out the radar because I still love playing these levels overall.)
3. Heroes: 9.5/10 (This game has been growing on me way more the more I play it. Only reason I don’t score it a 10 is the controls could be a lot less slippery. But I think where people go wrong is approaching this like an Adventure game when you’re clearly supposed to experiment with different formations to get the best out of the level. I did that with every team and I really had a blast playing it, so when I got to team chaotix, I didn’t really struggle that much because I had mastered the gameplay loop.)
4.) Generations: 9.5/10 (This game is amazing. Really the only gripe I have is the “story” because it barely had one, but it’s not bad enough for me to rag on the game entirely. Also planet wisp… Im not a sonic colors fan, so I wouldn’t like that level to begin with anyway. But the modern gameplay here rivals Unleashed so I don’t have any negatives to say about Sonic’s levels. And classic sonic while he doesn’t play perfect, his level designs are incredible and he still controls good enough to have a blast in his stages.)
5.) Adventure: 9/10 (Was debating wether or not I should put it higher but I think here is where it should go. Mainly due to the janky animations in the cutscenes, but the story itself was great. Sonic’s levels here might actually be better than SA2. They’re a lot more open ended and explorable. I really have nothing bad to say about them. Tails story is great and the levels are still amazing but he can be game breaking at times. Knuckles treasure hunting levels are perfection here. I really have nothing bad to say about them. E102 Gamma probably had the best story here. Like I said before, blasting shit is so much fun. Amy’s levels are great, don’t care what anyone says. She’s slow but zero adds a rush to the gameplay and it’s really fun. She’s got some of the best levels in SA1 easily. Big’s levels suck but can be completed in like 30 seconds and there’s 4 of them.. so yeah I won’t take off points for his levels too much.)
To be fair, the adventure games will always have the upper hand, as their plotlines were somewhat featured in Sonic X aswell.
Much like anime adaptations boost the manga, I think Sonic X, coupled with the what were the best stories in sonic games, helped cement the adventure games as the best.

Well said dude on the part of being biased. I was among those 5000 who voted and I chose Sonic Adventure. But Adventure 2 and Unleashed are definitely worthy runner ups in my opinion. Great video

Ugh... I've lost count the number of times I've replayed S3&K tbh and yet I'll never get burned out from it, there's just something so epically nostalgic about it (Even tho I first played S3&K via the Sonic Mega Collection Plus in the 00s after I already played the Adventure, Advance, Heroes and Rush games).

Sonic 3 is the game that has aged the best out of all Sonic games (considering it is nearly three decades old) to the point that Mania is still worse than it in some aspects.

Regardless of the poll I do agree with your whole thing about the biased situation, when you think about it, we all have our favs and we have our reasons for liking them. And I do feel like instead of yelling and arguing with each other I do really think that we should just discuss and have fun talking about why we like these games and what about them appeals to us. Adventure 2’s speed stages have aged so well that if they made a full game with just those stages it probably would be the number 1 Sonic game in the series. The speed stages in SA2 are flawless. That being said the Unleashed day stages are also flawless and I prefer the Unleashed physics compared to Generations and I’m sure other people agree so that’s why Unleashed is ranked higher. Generations is still great and the polish is nice but the level design is not as strong imo, still really good but not better
I disagree. A sonic game with only 1 style of gameplay will never be the best. It would be extremely boring after 1 playthrough and be over VERY fast. Games like adventure 2 and unleashed are loved so much because they have multiple styles. Therefore they don’t ever get boring. And mix in things like chao garden to really spice things up or the hub world like In unleashed and adventure 1

Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my favorite Sonic games of all time. While not as good as Sonic Adventure, i think i've given it way too much flack in the past and got more open on it. It's a really fun game with some minor flaws that don't discourage it's flow with a great story and atmosphere.
Big the cat as a playable character is negging it from a 8/10 to a 7/10
No offense but I like replaying SA2 more than SA1 mostly because of its ranking system and Chao Garden
I agree that SA1's generally just a bit better. Especially Knuckles' gameplay.
Something about the movement in SA2 isn't as enjoyable for me compared to SA1 as well.
Of course, SA2 takes second for my favorite 3d title, with Unleashed being third, and SA1 taking first.
It could just be nostalgia talking though.

I really appreciate the underline message of the video. I think it can apply to many parts of conversation regarding Sonic.
This community can get very hostile very quickly, and there's no good enough reason for it. We should be able to make an environment that allows us to enjoy discussion over our favourite games, as long as it's respectful and relaxed. I don't like when people resort to insults and etc because you like a game, I think fans should be a lot more reserved with their wording while in discussion as it keeps the place calm. Overall, very well done video, Matt.

Unleashed is definitely my favorite. I put more time into it than any other sonic game and I never even owned it. I played it at my friends house
My favorite Sonic games are Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure 1. Those are the peak of 2D and 3D eras in my opinion.
This survey is something Sega should definitely look at. If they look back at the best aspects of these games, they can use it to improve new games tenfold.

They should also totally make classic style Sonic games like Mania. As long as they don't oversaturate it like Nintendo did with New Super Mario Bros. Even though I enjoyed those games for the most part XD

Sonic Generations will always be my favorite sonic game. Only Frontiers could change that.
Unleashed is definitely the Perfect Sonic Game you've could imagine especially the Endless Possibility theme keeps me hearing everyday while I'm in my depression.
The medails are kinda poop and the werehig should have more moves available from the beginning so he is more fun when yku start the game not when you are near the end. Also they should make him a bit faster and better to control. The tornado levels are just well kinda there
@@jasonblack2477 the Tornado levels were the best (my opinion), especially the music. I agree about the moves and the slow werehog tho. I guess you're talking about the PS3 Xbox version since you mentioned the tornado. On the wii there were much less combos and it was fun because you actually punch with your own arms but it definitely became annoying. Mostly because of the music :/ and the medals. It' s horrible that you can't continue without them and they are difficult to find and you have to play impossible levels over and over

As a rollercoaster enthusiast I appreciated how it felt as if you are there, the camera movement along with the tornado when it changed direction, etc and the fast paced gameplay was also realistic when you have to shoot quickly. It felt like I was flying and it made my head spin a little. I loved that.

Dang I underestimated Sonic Adventure 2. But thinking about it more yeah SA2 has so many fans. I mean it was the first Sonic game released for other platforms after Sega became a 3rd party company. For a lot of people it was probably there first experience with Sonic.
People only like it because they grew up with it, or because of the story.
"Easier" is kind of why they are lower on the list as well you know! Part of why Unleashed is my top is because it doesn't hold back on the difficulty, and the same goes for the winner of each "battling pair" in comparison with the loser. While Unleashed's level of challenge is probably too much for the average consumer, it only overshoots by a bit rather than _drastically undershooting it!_

As much as i like Adventure 2, it still keep Heroes as a permanent #1 for meself.
But still, it was a good experiment non the less.
I really enjoy the adventure games, plus a double featured remastered would awesome. Unleashed is on par with SA2 for favorite sonic game. Best unleashed part- Story, Opening cinematic, level unique designs, soundtrack, and bosses. Same with Generations, honestly the final boss holds it back a bit, Time Eater should have been better.
I love SA2, I used to play it pretty much *every day* on the PS3; I love the levels, the aesthetics and the Chao Garden!
Sonic Unleashed is basically SA3 storywise.

Sonic Unleashed has to be the most ambitious Sonic game ever made, it’s sad that it receives praise only since a few years. It will always be my favorite. The characters, the story, the level designs, the soundtrack, the gameplay, everything was perfect (I had fun with the werehog too but I understand that the concept can be discussed).

Forces just shows that story doesn't matter as much to me, but it's still appreciated: the big reason I had been excited was that the setting promised the sort of difficulty I craved... and instead had NONE WHATSOEVER!
I mean, ok? Any other game could have told you the same considering the story is an active detriment to Forces. Game would straight up be less insulting if it didn't have any.(Though it would still be bad because of the gameplay)

honestly the results of this kind of feel almost like a generational shift, most Sonic fans now are people who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s, even ounce widely hated games like Unleashed and 06 have big fanbases, it's a stark contrast from when I was kid and had Sonic fans from the 90s tell me that most of my favourite Sonic games sucked and that this series never worked in 3D which we've thankfully grown passed
Sonic generations , Sonic colors , Mario and Sonic Olympic Games (ds Version Winter), Sonic unleashed, Classic Sonic 1- cd, Sonic Adventure , now Sonic Movie 2 , my favorites
What I find the most interesting about the top 6 games is it's essencially an even split between the 3 "eras" of Sonic. Classic with 3&K and Mania, Adventure with SA1 and 2, and Boost with Unleashed and Generations. It comes to show that, despite plenty of people bashing different eras for different reasons, they all still have plenty of dedicated fans and aren't afraid to hide it.
As for Me, Generations, Unleashed (Wii version ironically), Rush and Adventure are my favourite Sonic games. Although if Sonic Team or a fan game creator was willing to remake Tails Adventure and fix all of that game's problems, that's gonna be a major snatch for me.

Wow I wasn’t expecting sonic unleashed to be second place. After all the hate this game got when it was released. I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves. It’s truly something special and the ending theme. Endless possibility is to me the definition of sonic.
People that say 'You're just biased' are weird. Like okay, we're human, of course we're biased. I bet they can't even genuinely choose their own favourites because they have the objectivity stick up their asses.
If folks weren't "biased" and were being "objective" we will be expected to play the same types of games, eat the same types of food, wear the same types of clothes, etc.

My favorite Sonic used to jump around between Sonic Adventure 2 and Mania, but more recently, I realized I truly loved Sonic Heroes more than them. So my favorite is Heroes, but Adventure 2 and Mania are literally right behind it, so I personally love them all.
Best narrative can arguably go to Black Knight, though Unleashed is good too.
While mania is a classic game, I personally feel it's more modern than classic, so I say the bet classic Sonic is Sonic 2 for me, though 3 and K is good too.
Best handheld Sonic game for me personally is a tie between Sonic Advance 3 and Rush Adventure. I sunk so many hours into those games.
Favorite Sonic fan game goes to Project 06.
That weird Forces fan here. Great video! The last point is extra special: it wasn't until I had discussions with the Sonic community that I could really *understand* where the fanbase was coming from. That's why I can't say it's a "good" game, but I can still enjoy it for what it is.
But I realized recently that I think of SA2 as my favorite game. I know my opinion's skewed because the only memories I have of Unleashed was the PS2 tutorials bodying me, and the only two Sonic games I've 100%'d were Forces and Colors. I grew up with not only Sonic Jam, but also an absolutely garbage game called: "Blazing Heroes." I may have a limit for trash games, but it is a deeply low bar. Was it the Chao? It was probably the Chao--

The most important thing that I see from the top 6 games in the series is that there is one that is not easily available/accessible and can't be played on PC. And it's the second top one too on top of that, which makes it even worse.

I grew up playing Sonic on the GameCube I played a once a Sonic Adventure Battle 2 and then Sonic Heroes then I got Sonic DX and Shadow the Hedgehog those are by far my favorite Sonic games with Sonic Adventure 2 being the top for me and those are my favorites because I grew up playing them but looking back on them they have so much replayability without just grinding non-stop for something that's not going to happen perfect balance take Sonic Adventure 2 once you complete all the story missions and even get the best rank you can on them you're not done you still have the Chao Garden and to raise a perfect one that you want you have to go out into the missions and find the correct animals Phoenix leopard whatever it is and the correct don't even remember what they're called power cores or something and then you have to complete all the events and unlock the dark garden and hero Garden and I believe there's a kiosk Garden as well that I never got to unlock so much replayability that's just one game
Sonic Adventure 2 was my favorite Sonic game for so many years, but Unleashed has truly held up the best over the years, still the best Hedgehog engine game.
Mania, 3K, Generations are definitely the best 3 Sonic games. Sonic 2 and Unleashed are right behind.
My favorite sonic games will always be Sonic Colors and Unleashed. Unleashed has some of the best storytelling and world building, while colors makes great use of the wisps and has probably my favorite controls for boost sonic. Not to mention the environment detail in both games are incredible. Again the werehog of unleashed and act structure of colors could turn people off from the games, but I can look past the flaws of both games to enjoy the incredibly satisfying and unique experience like no other game has left me feeling.
Just here to point out that 06 is above both sonic 2 and rush among the others right now, 06 bois let's goooo
While is a Shame that 06 isn't higher but I'm glad that that Unleashed and Generations gets the Recognition it Deserves and I will admit that Sonic Adventure 2 did something's Right even with some of it has Small Flaws and can be Bias.
Yeah, this makes perfect sense. Unleashed is the best modern game, Adventure 2 the best Adventure game, and Sonic 3&Knuckles the best classic game (after mania).

I still remember being younger and absolutely could not beat the third level of sonic unleashed to save tails from that mini boss. I could not do it it was so hard for me at the time. I would try countlessly before eventually I got sonic generations it was so much easier then I got the rest of the series of sonic games that were out at the time. Also 2 years ago I went back to sonic unleashed and beat the miniboss first try in 5 miuntes. Fav games out of the series though.. Gotta hand it to quite litterally every game on the list of most liked games except for sonic mania sonic mania is great in all just not one of my favourite experiences

What I love about Unleashed is many things.
It's a very polished game.
It has that Disney-esque aesthetic that fits with the Sonic characters.
Jason Griffith as Sonic.
A good story that has a balanced tone accompanied by a fun adventure traveling the world.
The music, although that is to be expected of a Sonic game.
The boost stages were fun but challenging.
Sonic himself isn't portrayed as annoying like in Sonic Colors or Forces.
Still considered to be the "best looking" Sonic game.
While some people have issues with the werehog, the positives overweigh the negatives.
Its funny you say these things (although, keep in mind this is my opinion, you don't have to agree)
The game frequently glitches out
The NPCs clash with the real looking environments
Jason Griffith is good, but jeez, you all put him on a pedestal at this point
A terrible and weak story that started the flanderization and started the meta era
The music in the day stages are mostly generic stereotype music (the night stage music is BOPPING though)
The boost levels almost have nothing to do with the boost because of how many spike traps and clunky 3D platforming and broken quickstep and drifting sections are mindlessly spammed throughout the games 9 stages
Yes, sonic isn't as annoying, but id prefer a sonic that takes things seriously rather than cracking jokes all the time (basically, I think forces sonic is better)
And finally, the graphics look really bad and are only saved by the good lighting engine, sonic 06 and sonic free riders, say what you want about those games, but they had WAYY better graphics

Also, Colours started the "meta" era & god I hate that name with a burning passion.
Also, Sonic 06 looks like an upscaled PS2 & has extremely stiff animations as well as A TON of visual bugs, & Free Riders has bad presentation (I'm not just referring to the visuals).
personally I love unleashed but if not it would be adventure 2 or generations im hoping frontiers can be up with them games
It was SO HARD for me to chose between sonic 2 and 3&k because i like them SO much that it was hard to say whats better for me, in the end i chose sonic 2 for this poll but it was CLOSE as hell to 3&k

I just want a form of Sonic that is at least half as good as the werehog. I miss the prince of punches.
I like adventure 1 but I just can't get through the treasure levels in 2. They are just a pain
The hunting stages alone brings the entire game down for me.

I love how the hunting themes match the characters' personality and you really feel like Knuckles or Rouge. They were interesting but very hard. Especially the one you have to complete in 5 minutes. I liked the exploration but i couldn't help feeling lost and even scared, at times my claustrophobia got triggered and I even had dreams where i was in those places

Oh and when it comes to the story, Free Riders is the longest of the Meta Era games and doesn't even skip conversations, the writers really put alot of effort for all characters until the game is done but obviously it isnt that good except for one thing, Metal Sonic in his disguise as that Blue Eggman Robot Racer takes the insults from everyone including Rouge until his Extreme Gear Metal Star has enough data from everyone on the track to then reveal himself and take down Sonic while nobody knows it's even happening, that's actually genius if you think about it.

I love sonic 06 idc what people say it’s good but has to many glitches but they legit are avoidable by just not doing what you need to do to activate the glitch
I like SA2 even though it is so janky and unplayable on keyboard (don't own a controller) compared to ANY of the boost titles Forces included, it is decidedly a Sonic game and not a gimmick game with sonic taped on.
My fav sonic game is adventure 1 and sonic frontiers with trackers physics tweaks mod(I don’t know if that counts tho)
Sonic Chronicles is my favorite sonic game of all time ! But i have to say, i havent played Adventure 2 yet (shame on me)
and i also dont get the hate on Sonic Forces... it wasnt that bad...
I understand why people like sonic adventure 2 but when I play through it I can’t help but dread the Tails/Eggman stages and Knuckles/Rouge stages, given I suck at the game. It takes me 15-30 minutes to beat the Emerald hunt stages. And in the mech stages I just feel like it’s a clunky worse version of gamma from SA1. I just prefer adventure 1 over adventure 2 because there are 6 different gameplay styles and the gameplay feels more polished and smooth. The spindash in SA1 is definitely better but I will admit the bounce and improved light dash are nice in SA2. And the story of SA2 is definitely better than SA1 but both stories are enjoyable to me. And do not even get me STARTED on only having your radar only search for one emerald shard at a time in SA2. I just overall have a better time playing through SA1. I can see why people like SA2 more, I just personally don’t.
To give context to why I hold up SA2 so much: The mods.
Yeah. Pretty much that, I universally adopted a mindset of "I only care about how good a game is, not who made it that". I always liked the game, but dreaded the Treasure hunting because I could never memorize where the pieces are so I could never call it an objective great package. But then the mod released that fixed the radar and...yeah. One can imagine the rest.
