@@theresastubblefield5706 Absolutely! You will definitely need a setting lotion to set your hair when you curl it, but it should work perfectly with fine hair! Xx
I have seen a couple of your videos today. I love them. I have seen pictures of my grandmother and mom and. Aunt's...I tell them, well I did tell them they looked like movie stars next to me and I am eat woman. Lolol I love your looks.
I'm currently learning how to sew for the sole purpose of dressing vintage! I'm really drawn to the victorian bustle era's and also the 1940's and 50's. I would love to see some vintage hair styling methods from you.
There's some great vintage patterns available today,m just watch the sizing, as genuine vintage sizing is very different to modern sizing. Gertie has some great vintage sewing books that I highly recommend.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 don’t forget that with extant garments, there’s a lot of survivorship bias. Smaller clothes are the ones that tend to last longer, because they’re only worn for a shorter amount of time, and being so small, can’t be passed on to family to them wear to shreds. But larger sizes are out there. That being said, I personally prefer to sew my own anyway. Finding new ready made in my era, 1890-1910, is near impossible for straight sizes, let alone plus sizes. And I’d never wear an actual antique, even if it fit. Though occasionally you luck out and the style comes back into fashion and you can get a couple of blouses and jumpers without having to make them yourself.
Another fashion research You can do: Ask Your grandparents... *no, seriously* My grandparents have already passed away but I look at old photos from family albums for references, too, because I'm aiming for the authentic feel but at the same time realistic. Bonus is that You have certain connection with Your family and where You came from as a result. I learned a lot about my grandparents and their happiest memories just by looking at their photos through stories from my mom, uncles and aunt. People only truly be dead when You forget about them. When You talk about them it is like a remembrance and that's sweet
I’m just beginning my journey and I’m finding that starting with undergarments is making my modern clothes look much more vintage. Starting from scratch is overwhelming but I’m taking it one item at a time. I did order two pairs of expensive reproduction shoes, one pump from American duchess and one pair of walking oxfords from Memery. They’re expensive, but handmade with real leather and will last for decades with proper care. I’m trying to be sustainable while doing this! Also, wearing pantyhose makes all the difference! Nobody and I mean NOBODY went out bare-legged until the late 60’s/early 70’s. It was unusual even then.
There's a book called Here's to You, Miss Teen that was written sometime in the late 1950s, since the copyright is 1960 by a former Powers model, Mary Sue Miller. In the book, it has vintage makeup , hairstyling, clothes shopping (including checking for fit) and exercise tips. It even includes a diet plan for girls who need to lose weight, girls who need to gain weight, and girls who need to maintain their current weight, as well as a few recipes for "diet" foods and diy beauty aids and step by step instructions for a manicure.
Adorable. I bet there are many older ladies who would love to reminisce about their younger days. Some may even have things they've been holding onto bc they didn't know anyone who would appreciate them💞
Absolutely looooove cable girls! When it ended it made me feel like I was never gonna see my friend again, because you get so invested in the main character 😂 I think that’s the show that really inspired me to start wearing vintage as well, also to cut my long hair and wear a styled bob like the main character lol worth it
**I’d like to request a video on ladies in their mid to late 60’s during the 1950’s showing how their style of dress would have been, along with their hair styles and makeup. Basically what you show in your videos but for older women.**
It's hard to pick an era growing up in the 80s and being a young very girl in the 70s everything was polyester and I was allergic so Little House on the Prairie saved my life. My Mother learned how to sew and I wore Prairie dresses and pinafore dresses. I loved going into the church store and buying gloves and dresses from the 50s and playing dress up. In the 80s I finally started to really fit into my dressup clothes and I fell more in love with the 50s and wore pillbox hats to church. The church ladies loved this and gave me some of the best stuff. Then I found Molly Ringwald and Dirty Dancing. My issue now is that I have gained a lot of weight and now I wear sweatpants and baggy shirts and feel dull as dishwater. I have since discovered Gatsby and all the shows you mentioned including Downtown Abbey, Bomb girls, Call the Midwife and so much more. And I want to start to play again. It's funny that as a child I didn't care about people thinking that I was crazy and now that I am 40 I feel like I have lost my confidence in clothes and my identity. I still do my hair for big events like my grandmother who loved that I was copying her since her hair was to thin to do up before she passed.
Awh, thank you so much for sharing ❤️ You should do it girl! Go all out and embrace the style you love! Don’t let other people or anything else stop you! Xx 💋
@sarahperkins I am the same. I was 13 years old in 1986 and my favorite teacher and 4-H leader told me that I was any old soul. I didn't understand at the time standing there in my rolled up jeans and thrifted saddle oxfords but I sure do now. I caught a glimpse of myself the other day and was startled to see what I've become. That ends today. I'm gonna get my sass back and my Amazon cart has some lovely pretties just for me. After 4 decades of everyone else it's time for me again. Good luck on your journey
@Kj Sanford 3 years seems WAY too long, hun! At our age, we should have a bit of savings and some credit. This would be a perfect time to use it. I've been where you are (heaviest weight ever, probably right now! Lol) and none of it seems to be going anywhere (I'm a few years older than the ladies here=menopause). But if you do like Nordstrom Rack, they'll have nice dress skirts from Calvin Kline that I know will fit me. I think their highest size is a 14/XL in store. Theyll have wide leg pants and Loft will have capri dress pants that will work, too. All machine wash. Just don't buy their watches. Waste of money. Numbers fell off! Look for sales or odd colors. I like a salmon colored pant. If you keep to a set of colors that go together, buying will be easier. Mine are greens, dark blues, and of course reds/pinks. Patterns, you can buy say a cream shirt (like dress shirt) and wear it with light pants, jeans, any dress pants of skirt, or pick colors from the pattern and use them for pant/shoe colors. Such as green skinnies (if you're going modern or just feel like it), a neutral skirt, or the pink capri dress pants (got a lot of wear out of those!). You could of course wear black pants, too. When all my shirts have the same color palette, I never have to worry about what to wear. I also rotate the dress shirts (long sleeves), pants, and so on...you can start with the shoes. NR is easy with returns. I think they may charge you a little to ship back, maybe it's Macy's...? Macy's took a sizable order from me and didn't tell me they were having issues to ship first. Over a month later, I canceled the order. So, they're going under for this type of thing. They also have a lot of things that work with vintage stuff and are often cheaper. Think polka dot blouses. Be careful with buttons if you're big all up front like me! Haha. Buttons may not be your friend! You may need to go with a stretchier fabric for this problem. Only buy stuff you really love. For example, leather loafers. Or suede/leather moccasins/driving shoes. They also have the very klunky heels l, which I think of as old lady gear and I hate how it looks on my feet. But they could go with a vintage look. I also like kitten heels. Not sure if the style is 50s, but a pointy toe animal print would work. I'm a 10, and may have to size up to 10.5 or 11 because of the point. They were cheap, go with anything and dress you up right away. I can't do Keds. I'd use Vans instead. Not sure if the time frame would technically work, but they're very cute with the jeans of the time. Plus, they're fairly cheap and literally last for YEARS! My first pair are 4 or 5 years old. If you do Vans, note the sizes are unisex. A 10 could go 9 or 8.5 maybe. If you get suede, any shoe repair place can clean them like new. Use silicone spray on them (outside, please, don't breathe it. Also keep in mind that the spray might be flammable, probably, and the overstay would be slippery when it gets wet, say on a metal balcony). I find Coach to be a reliable size. I have pink moccs that are 4-5 years old. Still intact. Not cheap, over 100.00, but they're well made. Worth it. Thrift stores can have Manolos and such for only a few bucks. A 10 would be a 41 in Italy. They also tend to be narrow (Gucci heels are, too). I've found cute true vintage jewelry and nice repros on etsy/eBay. Type in Sputnik /sunburst style jewelry...a true vintage broch only cost me 20 bucks! And it's got a chain loop, too! Make sure they're in your country FIRST. You don't want a 55.00+ customs fee you didn't know about later on. Etsy will make whatever you want, of course. Heartmycloset has some gorgeous stuff. Not horribly expensive in the States. Not for bespoke (custom/handmade to order). I haven't bought here yet, as I want to lose a bunch of weight first. Haha You can only alter down so much. Look at the bad reviews first. Look at how their clothes work on real women using a cell phone in bad lighting for photos. See if the bad reviews have any possible merit. Avoid anyone who won't take a return. Or problems with returns. Now is the perfect time to try a red lip, a new hairstyle or anything else. It's winter and a pandemic. Nobody is going to SEE it. Jmo.
40? You're a baby, lol :) I'd LOVE to be 40 again, haha. Did you get your hormones checked? It might have something to do with it. I noticed that myself, along with the confidence thing, and being spacey/stupid...I also don't sleep! Ha. Try to get out more. Maybe adopt or foster a dog so you HAVE TO get out and move around. When I quit drinking 10 years ago, I found doing things for others helped. There might be a place near you that helps women get better jobs by better dressing and such. Maybe that's an option, to help them? I guarantee it will help you :) This will pass either way. Try not to rush into cosmetic surgery, starvation diets, or hormone therapy. Cosmetic surgery (had full-body lipo from Dr. David Teplica in Chicago out of St. Joseph's hospital on Sheridan road) is painful like you wouldn't believe. It isn't cheap. And it's not permanent. I had full body lipo, boob lift, and double chin lipo. I was kind of unconscious for like 5 days, lol. But if you eat the same junk, it comes right back over time. You still have to eat less and exercise, sorry :) Starvation diets. Got down to 117. Pretty much didn't eat. Didn't last and my guy friends said I looked like I'd been to a concentration camp. I'm 5'5 btw. Not everyone looks the same at different times of their life. My 117 doesn't look like yours :) It was still mostly flab, because I hate exercise. Ha. And hormones, including the pill give you cancer. So, no. Myself and 3 other women I knew came up precancerous on the pill. Nope for me :) Just wait it out, I hear lots of women are much happier after. It was way worse in our early 20s, I dreamed about it and it was awful, lol
I love this! I made a gradual transition to vintage style (1950's) over the last two years or so. I have to say that I buy fashioned garments from vintage designers and they cost me anywhere from 50 to 150 Euros per piece. My personal favourites are belted pencil dresses because they accentuate my hourglass-shaped body type. I also love A-line skirts paired with blouses, and I love putting belts over those too. I even switched to back seam tights instead of regular clear ones. The next step is finding a perfect 1950's long hairstyle (I want to keep my hair waist-length as it is now), with hot curlers and headbands.
The seam back pantyhose can be hard to find or very expensive. I learned that when the war came these stockings weren't in production because the factories had to make war equipment instead so the ladies would draw a line on the back of their legs and use regular stockings over it.
@@ventalexandria7727 Oh yes, I recall hearing something like that too. Also, the use of stockings with garter belts was so common because tights with a crotch were a luxury item reserved for upper-class women. And you're right, back-seam tights are hard to come by (I take good care of all of mine), especially nude ones with a black back seam, I only have one pair of those. Black ones are more common, and then the most common type are crotch-less stockings. But those are designed to be lingerie, so they're less convenient and comfortable for everyday wear.
@@dominikar4969 I don't know about upper-class women, but the internet (and memory) tells me pantyhose were invented in 1959 and became popular when the miniskirt made garterbelts impractical. I started out with a garterbelt & nylons, but when my hemlines climbed, I bought pantyhose.
Wow! Thank you doll for the great tips! I am a total newbie to the Vintage fashions. I found a vintage retailer here in the U.S. called "Unique Vintage". It's a bit pricey, so it won't be everyone's first choice, but another seller to go to! Thanks again Sage! I LOVE your personality, you must be the sweetest friend to have in Aussi land! Hugs! 😋💖
@@SageLilleyman I found one called Stop Staring! Expensive, but they have beautiful clothing. Also Recollections Inc. They have so many eras, and their customer service is fantastic.
For me the best is historybounding. I love regency, but is not practical for every day. 1890's vests and 1910's skirts adapted to wear without a corset are my next project.
Since i got into studying about body types, learning I'm a Romantic body type; the 1950s is the best decade to dress. I've been finding shapes of vintage pieces that really work on my figure but i also love 18th century hairstyles, chokers and corsets. My absolute true love is the Italian Renaissance, when i watched Ever After for the first time i just swooned over their dresses, jewelry and hair accessories. So i like using Renaissance jewelry with low square cut tops that remind me of that cut in their dresses., mixing it with modern stuff. As well as finding tops with Renaissance art printed on as well. Now im trying to find trudor corset tops to go with cute skinny jeans. 😄
You have given some really helpful ways to get started. I know next to nothing about choosing pieces that work for the style/era you are going for, but I would think staying fairly neutral in colors and pattern would be the easiest way to go. That way you can add scarves and other accessories to change your look without having to have a ton of pieces. Probably also avoiding stereotype fashions from a certain era like felt poodle skirts if you are drawn to the 1950’s. In other words, research actual styles and don’t just depend on what you see on tv shows like Happy Days. Check out fashion from other countries during your chosen time. I could be totally wrong, but these ideas just popped into my head.
I love your channel! I’m so happy I found it. 🥰 90% of the shows and movies I watch period dramas, because the clothes are so beautiful. I’m REALLY glad to live in a time where filmmakers and costume designers are really passionate about remaking films, like Emma and Little Women, to be historically accurate! I have always felt like I don’t fit in with other women my age for being so into “granny stuff”, so it’s really awesome to watch someone like you! 💗
Thank you!! I’m honoured to have you here! ❤️ Period drama’s are my go to for movies and tv shoes too! It’s always lovely to find someone else who dresses in a similar way and has an appreciation for all the “granny stuff”!! 😂💕
Yes I need this! My grandmother never wore stockings/nylons because it was seen as sl*tty at the time (which is ridiculous), even in the winter her legs were bare. I just can't do that! Especially because I'm Dutch and have to bike through the rain, it's just not an option.
For accessories, I’d love to see how you style purses! I’ve always been a 1-purse gal who never changes with outfits, even when I knew it clashed HORRIBLY, haha! A tutorial on purses/thrifting purses would be helpful.
I am exactly the same!!! 😂 haha I actually only own one proper bag, a black vintage purse from the 1940s! And I always take that with me even if I’m wearing colours that don’t go with the bag! 😱😂
What about a gold tone or bronze tone bag? Remi and Reed have several vegan leather reversible ones. There's no pockets, but it's easy to see everything. Their metal tone ones hide the wear. Be careful with bedbugs or lice/fleas on anything used. Look them over very carefully. Bedbugs, you'll see dots of blood, sometimes in a triangle pattern. They can also get into anything wood or upholstered. They dislike metal frames and can't climb them.
I just started watching your channel. Love your enthusiasm in sharing what you enjoy! Everything seems well researched and presented, and your personality shines through. Entertaining and educational - thank you for the time you invest in preparing and sharing these videos!
Totally love your videos! I just adore your era of choice and how you've really achieved the true look of a lady from that period so beautifully. There's a lady who lives in my hometown: Ballyclare, Co.Antrim, Northern Ireland, U.K who wears 60's style dresses on a daily basis which is amazing!I loved those dramas you mentioned also. Thanks for your help with coordinating ideas too. Looking forward to seeing what you show us next. 🫶
I've noticed that the midi style skirt is popular - you just have to look around. I sew my clothes and look on Pinterest for inspiration as I make my own patterns. It's difficult when you happen to be curvier as the sizing was very different back then. I love this! Your outfit totally works for today - I've seen alot of 1940's/50's inspired designs online so it seems to the ears of inspiration lately (in Australia)
I have some items you would really love ❤️ We moved into my great grandparents house after they passed We inherited everything Everything was still sitting where they had it all the years ago Just like walking into another time Love ❤️ your channel Amazing 😻 You are definitely a soul from another time
Hey Sage. Loved your video. Idk if you have ever heard of “Buffalo Exchange” but it’s a company that buys your clothes and they have tons of styles. They sell them too! Years ago when I was in my twenties and needed money, I had moved to Tucson, Arizona and desperately needed rent money. I had a wonderful vintage wool coat with the faux fur at the collar. It was navy blue. It was gorgeous, absolutely a beautiful coat. I sold it. Tucson is very warm year round and I didn’t need my wool coat so much. It does freeze there but it doesn’t stay cold long so I justified selling my coat. I have regretted it all these years!! But you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. I live in Mesquite, Nevada now, another warm year round place! I have often wondered if someone bought and loved the coat as much as I did. Hmmmm. You’re a doll. Take care. ❤️💜💚
My Nana would love you!! You are adorable!! I am hooked on everything 1920-50s !! I am a housewife and you have inspired me to go all in on trying this..since the times are so different between those years I get to try a few ways.. thank you!!
Great tips! I'm in love with the vintage style since I watched the 1955's Guys and Dolls. Now I'm doing a lot of research. Youre channel has been really helpful. Thank you. P.S. I'm from Brazil.
When Lock Down began in 2020, I had shoulder-length hair, and couldn't do much with it, so I tied it up in a bandana. I went out grocery shopping, and some people said I looked like Rosie the Riveter. I was wearing jeans and a short sleeved plaid shirt, and I guess I did look like her! So I thought it would be fun to wear Forties style clothes. I didn't have any skirts, but wore high waisted trousers, and started curling my hair the way Rachel Maksy showed me how on one of her videos. Mom thought I looked cute, and has been such an encouragement to me. I still can't get to Thrift Shops, because of COVID, but I can get some cute ideas from my own closet. Thanks so much for all your tips, too, Sage! Stay safe! ~Janet in Canada
I'm just loving all of your content. I live in rural South Australia and have been obsessed with the Victorian era, but love 40's fashion. I run a sanctuary so am always in work clothes, but will live vicariously through you 😊♥️♥️
Hey Sage, I wanted to mention. I ended up going to work for Buffalo Exchange in Tucson!! But in their management/bookkeeping department. It was separate from the clothing part. Funny huh. They saved me twice!! ❤️💜💚
I'm slowly starting to build a vintage inspired wardrobe. You're definitely an inspiration! I love 50s pin-up & rockabilly style, but also love my modern jeans & t-shirts. Post pandemic, I definitely want to take some of your advice for dressing to go out.
I’m starting to (try) to dress in a vintage 50s style, but my difference is I lean towards the greaser style! I love to wear leather jackets and jeans and my converse shoes, sometimes I wear boots, and if I were a boy I’d definitely have greaser hair but since I have long hair i just try to deal with it! My style is inspired by “The Outsiders”, a.k.a. my favorite book and movie ever. So I don’t always dress as a stereotypical greaser, I also dress in that sort of style they had in the movie. I love oldies, and I can’t wait till I have even more true style! :D
I was shocked when movie stars stopped wearing nylons with their dresses, especially evening dresses! Nylons make pretty legs look even prettier, and make shoes more comfortable to wear.
Prior to watching your "Start wearing Vintage " video I hadn't really thought much about wearing a particular period. I do happen to like Victorian, Edwardian, 20s, 30s, 50s, and some sixties and seventies. Anything newer, I don't really class as vintage. Starting from the premise that I didn't know where to start, I took on board your advice Sage of researching the period that you are most excited about. Victorian and Edwardian costumes will be more expensive as there is much more material involved and fine detail. Imagine, travelling as an Edwardian lady, with 2 massive hat boxes. It would be nice to wear vintage to a dance with like-minded people, or participate in a period catwalk for charity. Sage, you score 5 stars (top marks) for another fine video.
Your so fabulous! I absolutely love the 50s and 50s. I was born in 1980 and wish I could dress and live like back then! Could you do a video showing some of the popular outfits from the various vintage decades? I would love some inspiration to start a vintage wardrobe!!!!!
Hi! This channel gives me so much inspiration for dressing in vintage style especially since I’m not blessed with grandparents. I was wondering if you could give a closet tour?
I really loved the pin-up dresses so that was my beginning. They are so feminine and flattering even for a larger size. But now I find the 40's and 50's a lovely time. I'm slowly changing my house over as well. It takes time, but it's a fun thing.
Hi Sage! You and your videos are so amazing and helpful!💓 Thank you for putting quality vintage content out here that really helps other vintage enthusiasts on our journeys🙏 I have always been a huge vintage nerd, but I didn’t start dressing vintage until a few years ago. I have quite a few vintage reproduction dresses and staple pieces from some great brands, and a few true vintage items, but I am still on my journey and I plan to own a vintage wardrobe one day and only wear vintage. I also plan to learn how to sew in the near future. Anywho, I really appreciate your video! It is such an inspirational and helpful guide, thank you so much xx
I’ve been so inspired by you and Loepsie and Bernadette plus Jasmine all make me have the vintage vibe and I love it. I am starting to sew vintage on my UA-cam channel here. Have a great day.
I have started collecting vintage tops and right now I have one dress from the 50s. I don't want to completely convert but I love a nice vintage top with modern jeans
I've always got to make match, I go vintage in the Winter with a lovely trench coat & gloves 20-30s. I want to convert more though but unsure how to because I'm drawn to Victorian era 20s -50s/ish. Love the 50s-60s summer style also.
For me the main challenge of wearing vintage style clothes is where I live. I'm in the Midwest US which has very long, very cold winters. There's not a whole lot out there about what women back then wore in the freezing cold of a Minnesotan February, and the stuff most people think of just isn't practical for the weather.
I also watched those same movies and I LOVED them so much.....I also LOVE the 40’s the clothing looks so good on and I wish that I could buy some today....I do think if someone started making these types of clothing people would buy hand down....I live in the US in the state of Virginia a small town called STAUNTON and I would wear that type of clothing....
This is so helpful! I grew up watching so many period drama pieces, like the Agatha Christie’s Poirot series with David Suchet that was set in the 1920s. I also watched many films made in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and modern fashion to me was weird. I always wanted to wear vintage deep down but didn’t know that I could! So a few months ago I began to make the switch. Your advice is really so helpful for me! Doing my hair is still very hard for me, and I am a housewife with 4 little children so taking the time to do it sometimes gets pushed aside since I’m not very fast at it. And I’m terrified of a red lip, lol! I know I need to get some supportive shapewear to achieve those vintage waistlines but am not sure what brands to try. I do love wearing skirts so no trouble there. What if you like 2 different time eras? Would you blend? Or just pick and choose which decade you feel like dressing for the day?
The beauty of dressing vintage is you can blend the decades! But I think as long as you have an understanding of what they wore in each decade you can start to blend the two decades together well! It’s lovely to hear you are trying out vintage style, it is so fun! If you don’t have a lot time for curling your hair, you may find updos a lot quicker and easier with your time schedule! Xx And some vintage reproduction shape wear brands to try out are: ‘What Katie Did’ and ‘Rago Shape wear’
Plenty of useful tips. I’m slowly collecting sewing patterns for “staple” look. As I’m tall and most vintage clothes are for shorter women. Oh how I wish I was a dainty little thing! Ha!
I know you have a grapefruit tree so if you would like a dessert thats made with boiled grapefruit and cinnamon my mom has an amazing recipe! We're hispanic so there might be some ingredients different than normal desserts but it is so good! Also i love the cable girls, and the grand hotel. They also have on Netflix at least in the US the show: The Velvet Collection ? it's also a period piece and with characters from both dramas you watched!
Glad I came across this! This is a great idea; I don't really have a style, I'm newish in town (been "new" for a while due to 2020 isolation), and I'm just starting to overcome the long fatigue of having had COVID (I tried to stay safe😞). This will be a great goal; something to look forward to! I can add little by little as I lose weight. I'm super excited now! TY❤
Oh no I’m sorry to hear about you getting Covid. I hope you start to feel better really soon! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and are starting to try out a new style! 😊💕
@@SageLilleyman Thank you; you are so sweet! I just feel like this is perfect timing, so really it's all good. You're videos are so helpful, and I'm so excited now😊
When you said Cable girls I FREAKED OUT! It's my favorite telenovela of all time next to Rubi. I dress vintage now, and I feel more happy and one with myself. I used to show my skin because i thought it would make me look more so gain more attention and then I realized I hated showing my skin (especially my legs) and this style I used to not like because I cannot stand heels and also dresses and skirts but Ive gotten used to it and it makes me feel like a princess . I love princesses anyway.
Thank you for all the love!!! ❤️ Maybe instead of tucking a blouse into a skirt, you could leave it out? So that way it won’t be tapered around your waist! The silhouette and dresses from the 1920s didn’t emphasis waists as well, so that might be a style you may be interested in Xx I hope this helps! 💕
I'd suggest looking anyone you consider up online. Read the worst reviews first. See if there's any merit. There shouldn't be any trouble with shipping or returns. I've only dealt with Etsy and Ebay so far. Sometimes you find nice things at Nordstrom Rack. I've never had a problem buying or returning with them. Macy's has been problematic. I bought a bunch of stuff, they weren't clear on if a tee shirt was juniors or women's (it looks awful if you're a grown woman wearing clothes made for very young teens, you can tell of they're odd sizing numbers if it doesn't say=pants being a 31 or a dress being a 7, for example...)...then a good part of the order was back shipped and they never bothered to tell me anything. I finally said, "Just forget it." And that was a lot of money they lost for dumb issues. This is probably why they're in trouble financially. Wondee if someone isn't shorting them TO fail...? I've bought from Modcloth. I like their stuff way better on the 14 year old model than everything they sent. Shoes with very toxic smells, too small/narrow clothing, not well made...sent all of it back. You can get stuff made on etsy. Just make sure they're in your country. Customs will be very very expensive otherwise. You may not know how much until later. That's no-go for me... And they should offer returns.
I could totally do this if I lived in a warm state. But living in CT, I'm so cold for 8 months out of the year that I can't worry about fashion ☹️ if two sweatshirts and some sweatpants is what I need then so be it. I dress cute in the summer
I have a lovely granny who is always giving me beautiful jewellery, she always wears turquoise so I have a lot of beautiful turquoise and gold and mother of Pearl, I am very lucky😊

I'm currently learning how to sew for the sole purpose of dressing vintage! I'm really drawn to the victorian bustle era's and also the 1940's and 50's. I would love to see some vintage hair styling methods from you.
Oh yay, that's so exciting! Good on you for learning to sew! I will be doing some hair curling and styling videos soon! xx
I was depressed about the very tiny sizing on all the clothing and patterns you see...
There's some great vintage patterns available today,m just watch the sizing, as genuine vintage sizing is very different to modern sizing.
Gertie has some great vintage sewing books that I highly recommend.
Circle skirts dont require you to buy a pattern. Full circle for 1950s. Quarter or Half circle for more of a 1940s vibe.
Another fashion research You can do:
Ask Your grandparents... *no, seriously*
My grandparents have already passed away but I look at old photos from family albums for references, too, because I'm aiming for the authentic feel but at the same time realistic.
I scrapbooked 100 years worth of my husband’s family photos this year and his grandma circa the 40’s is my new fashion icon 😂
Your style is better than any of the ones on those movies and TV shows. It kind of made me cry because it reminded me of my mom. Thanks
Sounds like you’re are doing everything right with starting to wear vintage! 💕
I'm a guy, why am I watching this? :) Just kidding, I'm a reenactor (US ww2 soldier) and love vintage clothing. I wished more women would wear it.
Are you in the United States? If so how does one find out where they are having re-enactments?
There's a book called Here's to You, Miss Teen that was written sometime in the late 1950s, since the copyright is 1960 by a former Powers model, Mary Sue Miller. In the book, it has vintage makeup , hairstyling, clothes shopping (including checking for fit) and exercise tips. It even includes a diet plan for girls who need to lose weight, girls who need to gain weight, and girls who need to maintain their current weight, as well as a few recipes for "diet" foods and diy beauty aids and step by step instructions for a manicure.
This was so fun! 50s-60s style has my heart! 😊💖
Thank you! 50s and 60s fashion is so fun! X
I’ve always wanted to dress 50s, but had no idea where to start! These are great tips. Thank you! Love your videos!
You are welcome! I’m glad I could help 😊❤️
À polo shirt with a pencil pant or a Capri pant, a head scarf and ballerina flats are an easy start.
I have different eras for different times...in the summer I go more 60s 70s, for church I go more 40s 50s, and stuff like that.
Adorable. I bet there are many older ladies who would love to reminisce about their younger days. Some may even have things they've been holding onto bc they didn't know anyone who would appreciate them💞
Absolutely looooove cable girls! When it ended it made me feel like I was never gonna see my friend again, because you get so invested in the main character 😂 I think that’s the show that really inspired me to start wearing vintage as well, also to cut my long hair and wear a styled bob like the main character lol worth it
haha that's so relatable! I always become so invested with the main characters too!
OMG SAMEE
I guarantee it will help you :)
This will pass either way.
You still have to eat less and exercise, sorry :)
Starvation diets.
Nope for me :)
Just wait it out, I hear lots of women are much happier after. It was way worse in our early 20s, I dreamed about it and it was awful, lol
@@stalstonestacy4316 I was born in 1986 lol :D
Girl I don’t know how this ended up in my recommended but you are so flipping cute! I loved this vid had to sub just for the novelty💕
You remind me of Pam from the office but vintage 💛
Hugs! 😋💖
You are so sweet! Thank you for letting me know about another reproduction shop! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! xx
The 30s & 40s are my favorite 🌸💕
They are gorgeous I agree! 💕
Your voice is kinda soothing-
You look so much like the actress Amy Adams. I enjoyed the vintage looks in her movie, Big Eyes!
I feel you so much Sage, on the matchy-matchy outfit struggle 😂 It was so good to hear you talk through the vintage walk! Thanks so much!!
You are so welcome! Xx
Love thrift stores, it's all about being creative and having fun!
It really does look as if you've time traveled from those eras!!! So much fun and I just love the style ^_^ ♥
Thank you so much! ❤️😊
Your exactly like me 😂 I love granny stuff and don’t seem to have things in common with anyone my age 🤦🏻♀️😝
Thank you!! I’m honoured to have you here! ❤️ Period drama’s are my go to for movies and tv shoes too! It’s always lovely to find someone else who dresses in a similar way and has an appreciation for all the “granny stuff”!! 😂💕
Love this. Can you do a video on how to dress vintage during colder weather?
Yes I need this! My grandmother never wore stockings/nylons because it was seen as sl*tty at the time (which is ridiculous), even in the winter her legs were bare. I just can't do that! Especially because I'm Dutch and have to bike through the rain, it's just not an option.
If you find this out please let me know.
The queen’s gambit fashion is breathtaking 🥰
Thanks for this video !
Oh yes the fashion in Queens Gambit was amazing! Thanks so much for watching 💕
A lot of fashion from the 40s are classic and always around in some form . You remind me of pictures of my beautiful Mother who was young in the 40s .
Oh thank you very much :) xx
For accessories, I’d love to see how you style purses! I’ve always been a 1-purse gal who never changes with outfits, even when I knew it clashed HORRIBLY, haha! A tutorial on purses/thrifting purses would be helpful.
I am exactly the same!!! 😂 haha I actually only own one proper bag, a black vintage purse from the 1940s! And I always take that with me even if I’m wearing colours that don’t go with the bag! 😱😂
So I will have to get back to you at a later date with that tutorial! Once I own a few more bags! X
Thanks so much!! 😊
You're such a darling Sage!! Bless you!
The 1950s is my heart. The 1980s was cute too.
Yes, the 1980's were super cute too!
Ingrid Bergman is definitely who inspired me into the vintage look after watching Casablanca.
I love the mod 60's look. I have a combination of true vintage and modern clothes in the mod style. It adds fun to life.
Your red lipstick looks so wonderful on you.
I love the out takes at the end. Please keep them in.
I run a sanctuary so am always in work clothes, but will live vicariously through you 😊♥️♥️
Oh, welcome! Thank you so much for watching my videos! 💞😊
Your pretty little blouse has what they called pinafore sleeves. love it.
In the 1950s many women made their own clothes, like that they could keep up with fashion, save money and make everything fit to their own sizes.
Yes!! I love Cable Girls and Gran Hotel. Also check out Girls From Ipanema.
I love vintage. Glad to have found your channel.
Thank you so much! 💞
I still wear nylons 😄

I'm loving the overalls that you were wearing in this video.
Thank you so much! 😊 What a great idea!!! I’ll definitely make a video showcasing some outfits from different decades! 💕
I really like the 1950s style, I love to see a video on how to dress in 1950s style.
Just found your channel. Binge watching now. I love it
Aw, thanks so much!! xx
Hi Sage! You and your videos are so amazing and helpful!💓 Thank you for putting quality vintage content out here that really helps other vintage enthusiasts on our journeys🙏
I have always been a huge vintage nerd, but I didn’t start dressing vintage until a few years ago.
You have gorgeous, soft features. Perfect for the 50s. Love the outfits ❤
Oh thank you! xx
Absolutely loved this video, thank you so much Sage!! I will definitely be using it to help myself go vintage! :)
Thanks so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Xx
I liked this movie before I even watched it because I knew I would love it!
You can get a number of those items right now. High waist pants are back.
Solid advice!! I'm thoroughly enjoying your channel.
Your videos are wonderful and fun to watch.
Xx
And some vintage reproduction shape wear brands to try out are:
‘What Katie Did’ and ‘Rago Shape wear’

Plenty of useful tips. I’m slowly collecting sewing patterns for “staple” look. As I’m tall and most vintage clothes are for shorter women. Oh how I wish I was a dainty little thing! Ha!
I'm collecting All vintage & this is Inspiring‼️💅🏻💛☕
I know you have a grapefruit tree so if you would like a dessert thats made with boiled grapefruit and cinnamon my mom has an amazing recipe! We're hispanic so there might be some ingredients different than normal desserts but it is so good! Also i love the cable girls, and the grand hotel. They also have on Netflix at least in the US the show: The Velvet Collection ? it's also a period piece and with characters from both dramas you watched!
Love these ideas! I also was drawn into both of those shows that inspired you.
This is SO informative for someone starting out. Thank you so much
I'm tickled by your bloopers. 😂 Thanks for the tips!
Hehe thank you! ❤️
Super cute videos! Nice change from what's out there now! Well done! The clothes are great!!
I was born in '63, but I love the 30s & 40s era.
Call the Midwife has me all googled eyed for the 50’s and early 60’s look 😍
So happy I found your lovely channel!
Thank you so much! 😘
Good on you for dressing how you feel! It’s nice when you feel confident and happy! 💞
She’s so cute!
I love this. Please keep making more videos.
This was so helpful for me. Thank you!
I must say, I am sooooo happy I stumbled upon your channel! You are so sweet and wholesome, and I feel like i've found a kindred spirit
Thank you for all the love!!! ❤️ Maybe instead of tucking a blouse into a skirt, you could leave it out? So that way it won’t be tapered around your waist! The silhouette and dresses from the 1920s didn’t emphasis waists as well, so that might be a style you may be interested in Xx
I hope this helps! 💕
@@SageLilleyman Thank you
You mentioned altering skirts that were too big -- I would love to see a tutorial of this!
That's a great suggestion! xx

Just got recommended this channel. Very cool! New subscriber.
Awh, thanks so much!
@@SageLilleyman The missus liked the channel too. Nother scriber!
Thank you both so much!
I really want to switch now! Going to a thrift shop soon!
Yayy!! It’s so much fun looking for cute vintage clothes! 💕
Hi, I like to buy "dancer's T-strap shoes" it has a classic 40's look and very comfy too. They only come in nude or black perfect for any outfit.
Thank you for sharing, they sound like a great comfy shoe! 💗😊
I have a lovely granny who is always giving me beautiful jewellery, she always wears turquoise so I have a lot of beautiful turquoise and gold and mother of Pearl, I am very lucky😊
You are an absolute mistress of feminine style and adornment. You fascinate with everything you put on.
Sage is pretty awesome woman she knows how to dress 👍🏻👍🏻
Seeing all these cute styles makes me hate that I’m fat and it motivates because these are such cute looks. I love the 50-60s look
