I'm aware that these tips are not appropriate for winters with -15°C to -30°C. I live in a part of the world where we normally have between 5°C and -10°C during the winter and the clothes I wear are usually enough for that kind of weather. Please be aware that I can only share tips for the winter we have in Germany (Western Europe), since they are the ones that I'm experiencing! If you are from colder parts of the world, I'm sorry that I can't help you with my video.

You absolutely can't cater to all climates, I live in QLD, my tips would be to wear trousers, or high boots with a skirt plus a cardigan because it only gets down to maaaaaybe 5°C. You can't know everything. Thanks for the effort you put in.

Layering is the only way to fight cold. Make sure you're wearing natural fibers- most modern clothes are made of plastic that can't keep you warm in -30C. The lowest temperature I experienced in Romania was -22C, at night.

Canadian here, fleece lined tights, knit over the knee or thigh high socks, and help when it's in the colder weather, like - 15c to - 35c. Layering like this also works if you're wearing jeans or slacks to help keep you warm :)

Sapphire Camui here in Canada, -22C happens quite often during the winter days, the lowest I ever saw during the night was near -50C! I agree, those tips are meant for people that are in the same temperature range as her, still we can steal a couple tips ;)

Finland here. I'm working on knitting leg warmers (from mid calves (mid calves high winter boots) up to thighs, my plan is to keep them in place with a girdle), don't know yet how it turns out. :D They'll be 100 % wool. They'll be the top layer. Otherwise, I have wool blend stockings and polyester, cotton or bambu leggings with knee-high socks, if around 0. Haven't tried to wear more pairs of stockings, do you wear all three in the same size or do you size up? Those I have, they are barely big enough, even though according to the size table on the back of those stockings, I'm on the verge of two sizes and I chose the bigger one and they're still barely big enough! And a bigger size not available in this particular model. :( I'm working on losing weight but it's slow so can't layer stockings this winter when I can't get a bigger size, I guess.
Otherwise, I have a long woolen skirt (self-made) with a layer of... Can't remember what it's called. It something like the white layer you can found inside of winter jackets (not in jackets) + underskirt layer attached (so it's two warm layers plus thin smooth layer working as underskirt). Still not enough, maybe because the wool is not thick enough so I'm making these leg warmers.
Where did you get such a wonderful long shirt? This style with big puffy sleeves? I'd like to buy something like this, I have only basic modern long sleeved shirts and they look stupid with a Hepburn style dresses but puffy sleeves could work with it. (Not skilled enough to sew such a not-beginner-friendly project yet)
And I'm planning sewing also a linen chemise as an additional layer. I've read linen is really good for this purpose. Keeping cool in summer, warm in winter + protecting the next layer cleaner and better for longer.

For all of those wondering what I meant with "thermo tights" - I meant thermal or fleece tights. "Thermo" is the german word for it and I thought that maybe it's the same in English which unfortunately it isn't. So I'm sorry!

    Hello lovelies,
I hope this video will help you to stay warm during the cold winter season!
I just wanted to add that instead of a blogpost I could make a little Lookbook video with outfit ideas for winter. Let me know your thoughts 🧡
Also, a layer that I completely forgot to mention is a petticoat! I normally don't wear a petticoat in my day to day life. But on an extremely cold day it could be a big help. And another layer would be a pair of extra socks. Totally forgot about that 😁
Anyway, that's all! Happy Sunday! 🍂

Petticoats are great. Did you know that people used to wear *flannel* petticoats during the winter back in the 1800's/early 1900's? When skirts/dresses became straighter and more form-fitting, flannel petticoats wouldn't fit underneath and they fell out of favour. For whatever reason, they didn't make a comeback when skirts billowed out again in the 1950's.
If anyone is handy with a sewing machine (or a needle and thread - these things were originally hand-sewn, after all), there's a tutorial on how to make one here: sewcialdee.com/2018/10/05/diyreversibleflannelpetticoat/

Great video. That underskirt is called a “slip skirt” because it provides slip to prevent skirt fabric getting caught on your tights due to friction. If you don’t want to wear a skirt underneath, you can also wear slip shorts (called bloomers or pettipants in some places). Make sure the bloomers you buy are made of slippery fabric (satin), not something like cotton.

    • @Shirinatra

In Japan we had to wear skirts daily to school and we wore wool tights or knee length biker type shorts in wool. It did wonders for the temps. Also in Japan there was no central heating in school so without the layers I would freeze! Riding my bike to the train station was awful because of the cold and the skirts.

You are absolutely right about layers! I used to be adverse to layers but they are making a difference as I got used to it. A good coat is a must and it does pay for itself when you wear it on a day-to-day basis in the colder months. I've had mine for about 4 years or so. Foot wear is equally important. I recently invested in a nice pair that serves as my rain boots, snow boots, and are cute enough to wear with skirts and pants even when the weather is dry and sunny (but still cold). I got mine at the end of last year when shops clearance out boots to make way for sandals. I also like layering tights. A colorful tight under a lace tight look so cute and unique! Plus, my legs are warm (the whole point, and I get a bit of support since I stand all day at work). I always get compliments. Thanks for sharing your tips! I forgot to add gloves! Also important.

Tips from a Canadian :) We get some -30C days where I am! Merino wool socks and baselayers are KEY. They are so soft, comfortable, breathable, and warm! Top layer sweaters of wool are awesome too. A good down filled jacket with wind protection is awesome for the coldest and windiest days. Try to find a brand that uses byproduct down if that is important to you (ie, they use the down that naturally comes off the birds rather than killing them for the down only); North Face adheres to responsible down! You can try to find ones that are more stylish, but finding a vintage style might be tricky. I have a wool jacket that is from the 80s, but it is not wind proof.

As a fellow Canadian, I agree, but the trick is where to find those merino wool layers, and for a reasonable price! When I look on Amazon, the quality is often poor, and the products at The Bay can be quite expensive. I found some merino wool tights at Simon's, but for $30! I guess it would be worth it, but not sure. Any suggestions?

I´m usually going for an underdress from H&M. It is 100% polyester, so it´ll keep you warm - especially under cotton blouses.

Interessting! I use to dress more or less like that, but unfortanatly have to wear thick thermopants sometimes, where i live in Sweden it can get really really cold. And i spend a lot of time outdoors

The one thing I find difficult with vintage style in winter is finding vintage style appropriate shoes that are also warm enough and thick enough for cold winters. In Germany it's still OK but I'm in Norway at the moment and not sure how I'd cope keeping the style when it gets harsh. Also I find it a shame to ruin my vintage hair styles when I need to wear hats that really cover my ears etc. (Unfortunately can't always get away with a nice beret..)

I live in Canada, in one of the cold provinces. Her ensemble wouldn’t work with our windchill of -40C. I have to wear a hat, cover my face (except my eyes) with a scarf and wear a hood that completely blocks wind from my neck and head. By the time I get to my location, my eyelashes have ice on them because my breath travels up from behind the scarf adding moisture.
I can forget about doing a fancy hairstyle. I didn’t even mention the thick gloves and Canadian boots that almost reach my knees. Fashion can go to hell when I’m trying to keep frostbite from claiming my appendages.

May I suggest you research the vintage fashions of Russia/Norway/Canada in winter? At least in Russia/Eastern Europe the traditional thing to do is to wrap a scarf around your head and put your hood on top. During my exchange semester to Russia everyone still did that BTW and I can confirm that it's very warm.

An extra tip is to use oil or fat (I use tallow) on your legs - it really helps to keep you warm. "Ocean-swimminer" coat them selves in tallow or lard to stay warm when swimming with out a scuba suit. If you make it properly it doesn't smell at all. :)

I cant wear wool so im wearing leather. -20 celsius or more is warm. Thermo leggings are great invention because no wool tights needing :D. If there is cold too much for 1 layer, i just wear 2 thermo leggings. And glowes can be multiple too. I like first gloves and then mittens. I live in Finland.

Vintage style underwear will go a long way to keeping warm! First layer is the underwear, second layer will be a girdle and stockings or if you are going a bit older then a chemise with a corset and stockings, third layer will be a slip dress or skirt (skip this if you are wearing a chemise and corset), fourth layer is a petticoat, fifth layer is your blouse and skirt or dress, sixth layer would be a sweater or cardigan if desired (wool is warmest), then on top of that would be a long jacket or coat, and to finish it all off you would add a scarf, hat, earmuffs, and gloves/mittens. It sounds like many layers and it truly is, but it will keep you warm as well as give you a more vintage silhouette as shape wear and corsets were the norm for the time.
