I was 11 years old on June 6th, 1974 living in Toronto when I heard Gordon's radio broadcast live at 11:50am just having come home from school for lunch. I've always loved the United States.
What Gordon Sinclair said about America and the Americans is as true enough now as it was then! More than that, he also put his money where his mouth was and donated ALL the money he made from that speech to the American Red Cross!
As a second generation Vietnamese-American this video only reinforces my love for what I believe to be the greatest country in the world. America has given me everything I've ever wanted or needed. I'd gladly give my life for this country. I don't know when it became "cool" to hate America but when this country returns to it's glory and luster, count me among those who will proudly proclaim my love for the greatest country in the world.
We American's couldn't have said this any better than Gordon SInclair 42 years ago it was true then & it is still true today no other country in this world lends a hand to the United States when we fall on hard times but 1 thing is for sure we might stumble or get knocked to our knees but we always stand back up stronger than ever. GOD BLESS AMERICA
too bad it's somewhat dated for those who aren't too old or too up on history. That dollar stuff would lose most of us. I kind of remember it though. And I remember this piece by Gordon, believe it or not, making Kasey Kasem's Top 40!! Kid you not. That's where I heard it.
Even though he said this in 1973, I appreciate it, as an American, and I hope it still stands today. I sometimes feel like everyone hates the America, and it's nice to know that's not true.
we sent millions of tons to USSR because if the USSR had collapsed, the OTHER 65% of the NAZI forces would've shifted back to Italy and France. We couldn't take that chance. WE stopped sending these resources some months before the war ended. It is the way of the small-minded to believe that life's and world's problems can all be explained via conspiracy. Conspiracy becomes a crutch, tasking the place of evidence and reality. Hope that helps.
and very sincere. If Canada was full of Gordons, I'd relocate there for last third of my life. I saw today where dope smoking is fully legalized. Trudeau will love that; a nation of pot heads who can't keep up and who'll need govt assistance forever. The 1960s triumphant. Nowhere to hide. Tyranny approaches.
I heard this in my car today and it made me cry. I had forgotten this recording from long ago. It filled my heart with pride. I love my country and my people. I appreciate so much this Canadian's tribute to us.
Hate to say it, but this is what Trump is saying...Why should we go racing to help others when we get 0 help from anybody else. We take care of ourselves and its time to start pumping our money into our economy instead of everybody else's.
Although Sinclair did say that he wouldn't blame America for not wanting to help other countries and other people, it was very clear from that speech that what he admired about America was its generosity. Remove that from the equation and you have nothing left but negativity. And that is all Trump is selling. Negativity. But if you think that the government should be better at spending our money, then forget about the tiny, tiny amount we give in _humanitarian_ foreign aid, and instead spend some of the bloated defense department budget on domestic infrastructure projects, like roads, tunnels, bridges, and the like.
I see, so America's only value to the world is as a milch cow. Sure, let's cut our military spending, the only mandate the gov't has, just at the time when we're at war with Islam. Great idea. Better idea; eliminate "entitlement" spending, which dwarfs military spending. Use *that* money for infrastructure.
always the infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure. $$$ $$$ $$$. a favorite big govt boon doggle. defense keeps you out of Russian and Chines labor camps. Other expenditures are lower priority, therefore, we better start paying attention to 20TR national debt.
This is just wonderful. A little dated (it's from 1973) but still mostly spot-on. If you ever wondered why America is "exceptional" this is a big part of why.
The world can say what it wants. It's our troops holding the lines and our dollars keeping economies afloat. When something goes wrong the world denounces our actions when we help and demands we act immediately when we are preparing to do so. If calling yourselves superior to us makes you sleep better at night, go for it. Consider it part of your care package, from us to you.
So true, and hardly no one came to our defense on Sept 11; the French said it was our fault, as did the Spanish. The only ones to come to our defense was our English speaking brothers and sisters.
@@wendellmadfinger2358 And as a grateful American, I can assure you many of us are never going to forget your immediate action to help during the national emergency. Within minutes, Canada came to our aid, and took the pressure off by landing international flights on their soil. Once again, thank you, Canada!
Great video!! And you're absolutely right when you say America is still like this. For that matter a good portion of the world is still the same way when this commentary was broadcast. FYI--I was in 9th grade in 1973/74 when Byron MacGregor did a cover version of this commentary. He had a million seller with it. Once again, thanks a million for putting this 5-star video together!!!
I am proud and happy to say we have America as our neighbor, friend and ally. I am also proud to know that Canada has always been there to help whether it meant housing air passengers on 911 or saving Embassy workers during the Iranian seige of that Embassy. Will you ever see the "new" powers of China and India step forward and help out impoverished countries around the World...I think not.
Thanks for posting this great commentary and statement of support by Gordon Sinclair. Very nice imagery during the speech as well. I was 10 years old when this was released over the radio. I tape recorded it off of the radio and brought it to my 5th grade social studies class. Everyone agreed this was something we needed to hear from someone outside of the US at a time when we were starting to feel as if we were worthless. I say this 1973 commentary is as relevant now as it was then.
I remember hearing this on the radio in 1973, it made my eyes water then and it makes my eyes water now, although this was 40 years ago it is still true today someone should make a modern version of this speech using more current events. To this day I don't think any foreign country has ever helped America for anything.
+John doe Look up" operation yellow ribbon Gander" and watch ,you shall not feel so alone after you see it. GOD BLESS AMERICA . From Canada with love my American friend.
I'm glad to see so many positive comments about the Canada/America relationship it was the complete opposite of what i expected. I didn't think canadians liked Americans but now i feel optimistic and kind of hopeful. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite videos on youtube, always in my favorites.
@Abnormalproductions2 Every Canadian I've met personally has been fond of Americans. And, I can't say anything but good things about the Canadians. I definitely want to visit up there some time. Very friendly people.
then there is the story when a senior was asked to see his passport - he replied the first time he came to France - he came w/o a passport - The Customs official said no one gets into France w/o a passport. The Army vet said - the first I came to France, I arrived at Omaha Beach!
I remember hearing this back in the 70's... I just ran across it again.... It still rings true... just swap out some names and the message is still correct... Our Canadian neighbors have been like a brother... or sister... sometimes we disagree on something but when the time comes, they are there to help us...
THANK YOU!!! I am 39, an AMERICAN and damn proud of it. Your video about AMERICA being forgotten by the World is something that completely sums up my thoughts on the World!! There were some Iraqi's that appreciated us
In spite of our many flaws, foibles and faults...and when our practices often don't live up to our great principles....the USA is still the most successful, prosperous for the most people, influential, powerful and FREE nation in the history of the world. And all the great things Gordon mentioned that America did for the rest of the world, we say....no thanks necessary...that's what we do......we're AMERICANS !!!
A lot of this is true but there is a motive behind every event. However I think more countries should send more friendship to the States instead of trying to grind this young country down. We all do owe something to the USA no one can deny that!.
@BrotherJulien - This was recorded in 1973. Airbus was founded in 1970, and the A300's maiden flight was in 1972, but you are right - their first delivery to Air France was in 1974. Their products were mainly used by European airlines until rather recently. Like I said before, "if it's not Boeing, I'm not going!" God bless both the U.S. and Canada, and as the Peace Arch at the Blaine, WA - Surrey, BC border says, "May these gates never close".
Gordon Sinclair, I respect you and salute you in recognition of the truth of the plight of this great nation known as the United States of America. You, sir, make me proud to have Canada as my neighboring country.
What a wonderful speech! To the late Mr. Sinclair, thank your for your astute observations at the time. Btw, this speech made it into the top 10 billboard charts sometime in either '73 or '74 and there were two versions of this in the top 40 at the same time. I think both of them made it into the top 10...quite an accomplishment!
This is so awesome, I never get tired of hearing it. I like the video put to his words, but I was a little disappointed when he mentioned the Boeing Jumbo Jet and you didn't put in a picture of a Boeing 747, but I'll get over it. All-in-all, it was quite cool!
I've never been to Canada although I live close to the border, but I love my country but I also love Canada, some amazing things have come from Canada and every Canadian person I have met has been really friendly. So I think as neighbors we should show some love to each other! YAY America AND Canada!
Not completely true. Australia is always there when America needs us, whether it's sending troops to unpopular wars or firefighters to help battle your forrest fires, we always stand side by side with our American brothers. My father served along side Americans in Vietnam and thought they were great soldiers and generous to a fault. I do agree with the sentiment though, the good America does always goes unappreciated.
I remember when this was broadcasted on the majority of radio stations in the United States. This version sounds slightly different than the one I recall, but the words are exactly the same. Gordon Sinclair is not with us anymore, but his words will live on forever.
And last of all Aragorn greeted Éomer of Rohan, and they embraced, and Aragorn said: ‘Between us there can be no word of giving or taking, nor of reward; for we are brethren. In happy hour did Eorl ride from the North, and never has any league of peoples been more blessed, so that neither has ever failed the other, nor shall fail.
Thanks to our friend from the north for this great commentary! However, there was at least one instance where a foreign power came to the rescue of Americans. For 18 years, I lived a mile and a half (that's 3 klicks for those up north) from the very house where the Marquis de Lafayette joined Gen. Washington and his troops in August 1777 here in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Google "Moland House" for the story. If it weren't for the French, we'd still be singing "God Save the Queen"!
True that - a group of kids in UT frrl 'uncomfortable' and are scared of people writing Trump support statements on the sidewalk in chalk. Damn - grow a set.
This is one of the only people I have head on youtube say something nice about Americans, and it may be only one person, but after watching this I am so much more proud to be an America ;) America forever and always!!!
I remember this song from when I was a kid. I have told people about this song but could never remember the name of the song or the artist. All I remembered was that it was by a Canadian. Appreciate the video, brings back many memories.
I migrated to this beautiful country 23 years ago. Because of the freedoms here and the opportunities (and hard work), I've made a life for myself that I can be proud of. Isn't that what the American dream is all about? I just want to say thanks to a great country on this her 233rd birthday,
I LOVE my COUNTRY! We Americans TRY to be there-- when anybody needs us!! MR. Sinclair posses a GREAT question-- Where is all this help-when ever we need help- WHERE ARE THE REST of THE WORLD? Get OFF our backs!! You don't like us? Quit asking us for help!!!
this american is aware of australia's support in our conflicts.......i admire and respect your country......you are like us, you help and never get help.........
if the 1836 people left town hdn they were told to they would still be alive. the national guard had to spend 2 days fighting to get the town under control before help could be in. the cuba people also leave town when told to and dont build below sea level
This is a lovely tribute and refreshing that it is not another US bashing video!Thank you for sharing it! It is all true! 5 glorious and enlightened stars!
This is beautiful and as an American I appreciate it. Even those who think it's propaganda have to admit Americans are strong people. Remember how the nation came together after 9/11? Sadly, many of us don't realize the amount of freedom we have compared to other countries. As far as I am concerned, we can stop helping other countries, but that isn't the American way. I feel proud of my heritage, proud of my country and I am grateful for those who have fought for our freedom. God Bless USA
Good on ya Chuckles. Aussie's and Canadian histories are intwined. Rest assued we Aussies feel the same way about you Kanucks. Kiwi's, Aussies, Britts, Americans share a commonality of purpose, beliefes and kinship. God bless the brotherhood.
@CheckM8King2 Don't forget to mention Brittian pulling out of Singapoor "for the greater good" and leaving 15 thousand Aussies to be captured and tortured at the hands of the Japanese and the probable invasion of Australia. You can thank the Americans for stepping in. Iv lived all over the States. I am married to an American, I was in NY durring 9/11. I for one would like to say thank you. Most Australians agree and. Pls keep in mind 12 year old net trolls do not speak for us all, thank God.
@Battleboy441 I am one of these Iraqies. I currently live in California, and I appreciate every damn day I live for being in this beautiful country. GOD BLESS THE U.S.A. :)
It deeply saddens me to read all of the comments about how much people hate America. I've also experienced the hatred people have for American's overseas. Never once did I disrespect another culture when abroad, however countless times I was called names and refused service because I was an American. I must say though, that this particular Canadian's speech brought a tear to my eye. Rest in peace Gordon.
As a Canadian, I think Americans are fine people -- at least the ones I have met. Thing is, despite the fact Canada is so close to America, I personally feel more kinship and commonalities with the British and Aussies.
Can't we just ecept and respect what this man has said? Yes, he got some of his facts wrong, but it could've been in a time period when this was made when Britain hadn't paid its debt, I'm not sure so don't get angry. I say thank you to every person in the world who has helped us Americans in times of need! The favor will be returned God Bless America
I wonder where the 65 people who didn't like this is from? I haven't lived in other countries but I am glad I live here, people still fighting to get in....Still the greatest nation there is! God Bless America!
Yeah, we help more other countries than they help us. We should; we have more means to do so. That doesn't mean were not also a "decadent, war-mongering" people. We're a country that does both good AND bad. We deserve both praise and scorn, depending on which aspects you value more. Those who think we deserve only praise and respect are as foolish as those who think we're the source of all evil.
I recently saw a documentary on youtube about Americans and Canadians. I learnt that it was the Canadian ambassador in Iran who smuggled some US embassy personal out of the country with fake Canadian passports during the Iranian hostage situation. Damn, that just makes me a proud American. Yet even more, a proud North American. Thank you, Canada. Our two countries kind of kiss ass. Just saying.
+mager56723 when japan had that 8.9 earthquake and the tsunami .that one - two punch , we sent USN REGAN aircraft carrier, the world said why in the hell would send aircraft carries!!!
18 year olds were fighting Germany and Japan in ww2. Today, 18 year olds look like 'My Pony' and chalk words hurt!
True that - a group of kids in UT frrl 'uncomfortable' and are scared of people writing Trump support statements on the sidewalk in chalk. Damn - grow a set.
This is one of the only people I have head on youtube say something nice about Americans, and it may be only one person, but after watching this I am so much more proud to be an America ;)
America forever and always!!!
Love thy neighbor to the north.
I remember this song from when I was a kid. I have told people about this song but could never remember the name of the song or the artist. All I remembered was that it was by a Canadian. Appreciate the video, brings back many memories.
@iBsteveT
Thank you for those kind words, and God bless Canada as well, from the USA.
*a speech like this today would be called racist and the person labeled as an insurrectionist...*
10 million thumbs up!
if the 1836 people left town hdn they were told to they would still be alive. the national guard had to spend 2 days fighting to get the town under control before help could be in. the cuba people also leave town when told to and dont build below sea level
Proud to be American! Land of the Free, Home of the Brave!
I am glad our children care so much about each other. We only have each other in this dangerous world.
@Battleboy441 I am one of these Iraqies. I currently live in California, and I appreciate every damn day I live for being in this beautiful country.
GOD BLESS THE U.S.A. :)
This is a great video. It makes me proud to be an American.
Damn good speech, really shows how much good this country did and how many people have forgotten.
This video is more relevant now than ever before 🇺🇸🦅⚔️ #WWG1WGA
It deeply saddens me to read all of the comments about how much people hate America. I've also experienced the hatred people have for American's overseas. Never once did I disrespect another culture when abroad, however countless times I was called names and refused service because I was an American. I must say though, that this particular Canadian's speech brought a tear to my eye. Rest in peace Gordon.
i love this n it makes me so proud to b an American
As a Canadian, I think Americans are fine people -- at least the ones I have met. Thing is, despite the fact Canada is so close to America, I personally feel more kinship and commonalities with the British and Aussies.
Can't we just ecept and respect what this man has said? Yes, he got some of his facts wrong, but it could've been in a time period when this was made when Britain hadn't paid its debt, I'm not sure so don't get angry. I say thank you to every person in the world who has helped us Americans in times of need! The favor will be returned
God Bless America
That almost brought a tear to the eye.
God bless america and this man
true Americans are a self reliant volk, we don't ask for a saviour.... we are the savior!
We Americans are wonderful, the rest of the world owes us so much.
aww i just gotta say that I LOVE america and I LOVE canada
Somebody not born in the USA says something nice about us, I may die of shock.
I wonder where the 65 people who didn't like this is from? I haven't lived in other countries but I am glad I live here, people still fighting to get in....Still the greatest nation there is! God Bless America!
God bless our brothers up North
Yeah, we help more other countries than they help us. We should; we have more means to do so. That doesn't mean were not also a "decadent, war-mongering" people. We're a country that does both good AND bad. We deserve both praise and scorn, depending on which aspects you value more. Those who think we deserve only praise and respect are as foolish as those who think we're the source of all evil.
RIP gordon Sincliar and a balted Canada day to all our brothers and sisters up in the north land.
Thank you!!!
America, my beauty, my motherland, my proud country, I will save you from destruction from this new disgusting time no matter what!
God, if Canada was made up of this kind of guy, I'd move there.
There are many amazing Canadian people just like this. They and Great Britain the best allies we have!
Jesus, is being neighborly really that rare in the world?
mager56723 yes...
+mager56723 when japan had that 8.9 earthquake and the tsunami .that one - two punch , we sent USN REGAN aircraft carrier, the world said why in the hell would send aircraft carries!!! Well because the REGAN can produce 400,000 gallons of fresh water a day, and Copters that can get FOOD and medical supplies anyplace and land almost anywhere
We are NOT our government
Wonderful.
@ArodWingfoot Without fundung from the Americans, it would have never been possible.
