This is going to help me make the decision to jump all in on removing the air setup in my mk7 R to a coilovers setup. Mines just a daily and looking for something more functional for daily driving. Love your vids and the RS swap. Wish I wasn't an electrical idiot or else I might attempt it myself 😂
I work for a suspension manufacturer: the ‘plastic disc‘ is there to prevent the bump stop from creating a vacuum on the top shock seal. If the plastic washer wasn't there, every time the shock bottes out and the bumpstop compresses und decompresses, the vacuum of the bump stop would suck oil out of the seal every time.

Except he didn't actually do anything to corner balance it? Just put it on the scales and went 'yep that's what the weight is' and didn't make any adjustments? You're not supposed to move the interior about to change the weights you're supposed to adjust the spring platform heights to do it.
@@11TOMiX77 came here to say exactly this. It seems like he doesn’t have a clear understanding of what a corner balance entails. Most likely the shop with the scales misinformed him. His cross weights were NOT even could’ve easily been adjusted closer to 50%. Also aligning it before putting it on the scales makes zero sense unless they never planned on doing a proper balance anyways. Not trying to be a hater Charles. Sorry if it comes off like that, but I think the guy doing the corner balance probably didnt know what he was talking about.
I run Koni Sport shocks/dampers with EMD lowering springs on my MK7 GTI. Top mounts, bearings, and all other items are OEM. I absolutely love this setup! It’s so good for the street in a daily car. I previously had BC Racing and ST XTA coilovers, and wasn’t a fan of either of them at all. The only thing I wish the Koni Sport rear shocks had was an external dampening knob. The way they’re designed is that you have to remove the rear shock to change the dampening. Other than that, love them!
@@HumbleMechanic I'm sorry I missed the part where you ain't a real mechanic 🥺 I suppose you don't have the Charles Install option like Paul :) Thats why he has a heart of gold 😏
This car is “chef’s kiss”. Well done @HumbleMechanic. As a pretty much lifelong BMW guy, it makes me want a Golf. I already own a Touareg and a Vanagon, so, why not? Yes, with two VW’s I have 6 BMW’s 😅 Touareg is a tow vehicle and Vanagon is a festival vehicle. I think you have convinced me a Golf can be a fun vehicle.
you did the right choice Charles the car looks amazing on those coils plus the wheel setup is top notch great job on this build cant wait to see this at SEMA
"Koni adjustables. They'll save us about 2lbs, and they're gonna give us better traction for the whole shot." Car looks stellar with those wheels! Amazing!
While I support your decision; I have to note something. My wife's 2017 GTI Sport has been bagged with Airlift 3P since about 3000 miles. It now has 135,000 miles without issue. Utilizing Airlift 3P. We did recently replace all of the control arm bushings, both front strut/bag assemblies, and one rear bag. It's been great! She's driven it daily since new in November of 2019. It's been a great car and a great system. I have Koni Yellow shocks and H&R springs and that's been fine for me on my 2015 Golf S. I completely understand the anxiety of the car airing out and being stuck. It hasn't happened, but I know a buddy that it HAS happened to.
Right choice in my mind too. I had an Audi with factory air and it was leaking. All my other cars never had an issue, and the cost is just too much. Points of failure are a big thing for sure!
Excellent choice for coilovers. I on my 2nd car on Sliver’s NeoMax coilovers with Swift springs and once dialed in its the best balance of handling and comfort for VWs IMO. Thanks for the helpfull information
Sir Charles. You don’t me did it again. Coils or Air, the wheels definitely maketh the car. Looks fantastic on those new Rotis. Perfect choice. Wish you had them on for LoeShow but I still love you. Enjoy it buddy. And thanks for sharing. Poor Juan 😂
Woah Looks amazing! New wheels pop the wide body nicely! Cool test with the air ride but I bet the yellow AudiWagen Oriole is driving MUCH better. Keep up the good work!!!!
I never got why you added air suspension to the R, BUT I live in the UK with nice twisty backroads so I can see why I'd be more biased toward a proper sports suspension kit, if everywhere around you is long straight roads with no bends I could see why that might he been a better option from a stance point of view..., Id have rather just stayed stock.
What an amazing build, I followed it from the start. I don't blame you for switching out the bags for coils. Personally I wish there was a hydraulic option, with easily adjustable ride height (slam it when you park kind of thing) but still with the coil spring ride.
Could not agree more. A body shop that repainted my car convinced me to get an airbag suspension against my better judgment. It’s absolutely horrible compared to my kwv3 coilovers I had before. I am swapping mine back today. Also, I can’t believe I let somebody else work on my car… 😂
I was really hoping for bronze on the final wheel choice. It still looks good, but that bronze/ yellow/ red was epic. Has me looking at used VW's on autotrader way too much...
Very nice job. For the type of car and build, yes coilovers probably make the most sense, but John has proven you can still drive spirited in a bagged car, ie Porsche 924S. The yellow is good, and nice wheel choice! Very rad that you'll have your car at SEMA!!
One thing I’ve always noticed when measuring with a caliper, the right side will always sit lower in the front. Idk why I didn’t think about this ahead of time because more weight in the engine bay is on the passenger side. I always went with a 5mm difference (higher on the passenger side) worked for me
I’d recommend Boeshield T9 or Dry graphite lube on the threads before installation. Makes for adjusting the collars a snap and no attraction to dirt like oil will.
I made sure my bags on my MK7 GLI was both for style and regular daily driving. Even the side mexico missions 👀 I never had to worry if my bags were installed wrong cause I made sure everything was properly installed. No leaks for a whole year. Do miss going air can’t wait to go back 😭😭😭😭 to each their own.
I Support this modification as much as I support not replacing all those bolts! 😂 Most of the one time bolts on these cars seem like an unnecessary precaution. They’re of sufficient grade and size considering the torque value that they aren’t actually torque to yield (in most cases). Early in the video I thought it’d be cool if you put it on scales, so it was cool to see you did. I think air ride has come a long way in terms of comfort, reliability, and to some extent even performance… but if you’re serious about any of those categories, coil spring and damper are the move. It’s an R after all.
I just did that yesterday on my alltrack. I got lucky when setting front strut in one bolt in was all I needed to relieve me from holding strut assembly
I have had my airlift 3p/3h on my Focus RS for a few years now and I have constant anxiety driving around. I have them set to max height, have to ride a t 50psi and constantly air up over everything as I have tbperformance mods on the undercarriage. Just developed a hardcore squeaking in the rear suspension that I have to figure out. Definitely been contemplating on going with coilovers as I feel it would drastically lesson my anxiety such a beautiful car. Just need to figure out how to sell my airlift setup to fund the coilovers lol.
I'm a bit shocked that 034's wheels weren't spec'd to a better fitment for the MK7. I run 15mm/20mm for my OE wheels on my R and it's just about perfect. Those spacers you have are thicc... Even 034's wheels for the B9 Audi cars (specifically the SQ5) are perfect fitment with no spacers.

I'm sure it's much better, I dig air ride for the adjustability but just seems like more of a car show thing than being functional. Also good that Koni chose standard race springs w/helpers so that any standard spring can be used to dial rates.

@HumbleMechanic good choice with the Air ride, I mean it's good but it's just not the same as shocks/springs also those new wheels look absolutely bob on
Ha. This was, and is me. I got Air because I thought, if I get it dialled in, I'll have the best both worlds. I had the same anxiety, but mine was due to one of the air lines popping out whilst driving! Scary. Back to coilovers! Air is great for sitting there looking good. But for driving and driving how performance cars are to be driven, they do not excel. That's my opinion. I know some love Air, and that's fair.
I was thinking about going air ride but and even though though it would look good I wouldn't be able to have fun with it so just like you did I just settled for some coilovers.
