  • Tesla is rolling out new variants of the Model Y and Model 3 in the US, which could change who gets federal EV credits and the battery options. We're also diving into LG Energy's plan to start making more 4680 batteries, set to significantly boost Tesla's supply chain. Plus, we're talking about Canada thinking about tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, showing how global trends are shaking up the car industry.

    20% isn't the scrap rate; it is the productive capacity use do you think.

    @HansCNelson - another comment - 4680 rejects may mean the highest quality needed for the cars and can still be used in less stringent applications. I’m not sure if they are used in Megapacks or Powerwalls but that would be a use case for marginal cells that fail the test for the car packs.

  • @billw.5964
    @billw.5964 14 днів тому

    @HansCNelson - was the LG issues at the cell level or the pack/BMS level?

    10:20 LFP yes! But pouch? Maybe for megapacs?

  • @jkev1425
    @jkev1425 14 днів тому

    LG packs are also with 2170 which are totally different the the pouch ones in bolt. Look to Europe. Since Shanghai imports to Europe all LR are LG and all LFP are CATL.

  • @dennispeterson6598
    @dennispeterson6598 14 днів тому

    Charge rates are the question. I was seeing people say don't get the M3LR because it charged slower than the other versions so was actually worse for road trips. Now with the tax credit, the charge rate is faster than for M3P. (at least when I checked last week).

    • @jkev1425
      @jkev1425 14 днів тому

      General rule was: Panasonic Battery is better then LG versions (which is used in Shanghai factory, so providing Europe so far)
      The BYD Blade LFP is better then the CATL one. CATL is used in Shanghai factory, BYD Blade in Berlin.
      The best battery from charging was the first Panasonic back in 2019. The 250kW was hold quite long.

  • @yschlussel
    @yschlussel 14 днів тому

    If I were a Chinese EV manufacturer, I would software lock almost all, but the most basic functionality, including range to have the cost of the car drop dramatically. I would then charge the customer directly and have them pay me directly for all of that functionality, thereby averting almost all of these taxes on the car.

    Tesla batteries use dry electrodes think as final step. This means if any defect is detected before the dry electrode coating is applied, the raw ingredients in the partially complete battery can be recycled. This means Tesla can run a battery line with a high failure rate profitably.

    Herbert, could you do a show about NAFTA. I understand it's being corrected by the end of this year for final approval, at which point, it’s set for 10 or 20 years. NAFTA can sunset within the year if adjustment cannot be agreed upon. Mexico and Canada will probably have to comply with some protectionist language that protects US Auto industry. I’d prefer to have access to the best car available no matter where it’s made.

    • @sportbikeguy9875
      @sportbikeguy9875 14 днів тому

      There won't be any "protectionist language" against Canada, many of the parts put into cars in Detroit, come from Canada, we kind of dictate the terms, not the states lol

    • @appl314
      @appl314 14 днів тому

      😢Haha... you think so....canada had to originally agree, in the preceding auto pact agreement. not to produce any vehicles in canada in exchange for parts manufacturing. Even rental cars, rented by a canadian in the US, until 2001 (maybe later), could not cross the border and back without breaking the law and having the car impounded. Take a closer look at your history. Canada does parts because we couldn't legally create our own car manufacturing companies... the auto pact was found to be an illegal agreement by the wto..world trade organization.@sportbikeguy9875

    Are these new variants the cause of the 5% or so increase in stock price today? It's amazing how short minded some Tesla investors are... I'm guessing they're mostly institutional backers that don't deepdive into Tesla economics?

    All car companies should be required to inform customers if they are using pouch cells.
    GM, Ford, Hyundai/Kia all use pouch cells. I avoid those brands because of this. If Tesla uses pouch cells, they should disclose that.
    LG batteries are not the problem, pouch cells are the problem.
    "Tesla's CEO Elon Musk earlier this month revealed that his company strongly recommends against the use of large pouch cells, as their probability of thermal runaway is dangerously high (compared to other form factors)."

  • @MoreOnEVs
    @MoreOnEVs 14 днів тому

    I’d be pretty pissed to get an LG battery when they have a worse charge curve. They’re not dangerous or defective, they just can’t charge as fast.
    That info comes from Out of Spec reviews. It’s based on real world charging tests. If you’re sitting in a Tesla bubble, you should broaden your viewing.

    Can someone clarify for me? If I don't owe enough tax to qualify for a $7500 tax credit, but I purchase a Tesla with a $7500 instant rebate. Do I have to pay it back at tax time? I know way more people who never qualified for $7500 tax credit because they don't make enough, than I know people who make too much.

  • @meganote
    @meganote 14 днів тому

    Tax credit aside, I'm not sure why anyone would pick the LG cells unless Tesla offers the car at a pretty fair discount. They are inferior cells compared to the Panasonic.

  • @slowercuber7767
    @slowercuber7767 14 днів тому

    6:33 these cars with LG batteries supposedly are charging at lower rates. OMG I’d hope that Tesla would stick to a zero-pouch-cell policy. I would not buy a pouch cell powered vehicle. Maybe it’s an irrational prejudice.

    While we were putting up barriers in switching to electric, China was concentrating on developing the most advanced technology. Now, we are blaming them while ignoring the fact that we contributed to the fact that we are behind.

    I question whether China's goal is to setup foreign factories to sell their cars into foreign markets, if China's goal is to keep their population employed then foreign factories employing local workers does not advance that goal. I think they really want to sell vehicles made in China by Chinese to the world. Will be very interesting to see the source of parts and materials that supply these foreign factories.
    From a Western capitalist viewpoint your position makes perfect sense, not sure the CCP shares that view.

    Tariffs are just a tax on the average working people who need affordable reliable low maintenance/running cost vehicle. Protectionism never works... Its just a part of a corrupt political connection with entities that work against a normal running Capitalist environment. If a company wants and can sell something lower than it's competitor it's up to the competitor to combat that strategy by creating a better product or some other niche avenue. Tariffs should be illegal and whoever thinks they are working for the good, has a less mental thought process working in their system.
