You guys should do the American SAT and ACT. We take the SAT at the end of Sophomore year and the ACT around senior year. The scores on them don’t really count towards anything but colleges like when you take them as it’s a good indicator of your level. Most universities actually have a minimum SAT score that you should keep an eye on. Earning 2600 is the perfect score and schools will be clamoring for you to go them. Unfortunately very few students ever get it as maybe one every year gets it. The students that score high are usually science and English program students. Getting AP or gifted is no guarantee of doing well on those tests. The SAT requires a lot of vocabulary skills as every year a new guide is published with new words you need to memorize and understand.
By happenstance, Josh knew Dave and introduced his students to korean food and culture, their personalities and popularity earned them a trip to South Korea
This hits home to me as someone who grew up in East Asia. I remember how studying was all I ever did/cared about, so I paid zero attention to developing my self-esteem, hobbies and other skills. Everything was about getting into a top university. And when I finally did it, the next milestone was to graduate with decent grades. When I graduated and finally got to decide what I wanted to do, I felt like a 3-year-old child thrown in at the deep end. Although I excelled at school, many of my less academic peers who spent time developing their hobbies, confidence and interpersonal skills are seeing much better success in the conventional sense of the term. I have to spend a lot more time making up for what I neglected in childhood.
Whenever I hear about these types of exams, I can only think that it'd make me want to study abroad. Learn English well enough to do one of these, be decent in math, and you're going to be able to get a high score on the SAT and ACT exams in the U.S. and get into a mid- to high-tier school, probably with scholarships. No idea how it is in UK schools, but I'd imagine with good academic records it'd be doable. Not to mention whatever other countries one might be interested in throughout the world.
I've always been aware of the insane amount of pressure students in Asia faced when trying to get into uni, but now as I study the SQE I feel like I understand how exactly debilitating studying for exams that are designed to trip you up are 😭
Mr. Smith's tirade about the word "happenstance" at 3:51 immediately made me think of the song Fortuosity sung by Tommy Steele in the 1967 Disney live action film "The Happiest Millionaire". It has a line that uses that word - "Fortuosity, lucky chances, Fortuitious little happy happenstances".

The sticky rice thing in Korea is quite interesting. Cause here in the Philippines, I have remembered that before taking my board exam, we were instructed to do this tradition. Which is also eating sticky rice for us to pass our boards.
Reading all the presented questions on screen I am glad that I still got most of them right even if my highschool days are decades past. But it indeed made me realize that when you aren't a student and actively studying these things rust settles in and you become a slower version of yourself that was still in school.
This is like when you are asked to write a book report and you do it quickly and easily on half a page and are then told it needs to be at least 4 pages, so you go back in and try to stretch it out as much as possible inserting words that arent needed. Thats this whole test. This test is the reason so many people are afraid to speak in english, and lack conversational/listening skills. They are too busy trying to learn this test and not actual english. Sad day. I pity the korean student. You have my pity. Dont give up on english. You may not pass this test, but you can still learn to speak english better than anyone who passes this test, without it.
In Korea, tests in all other subjects, including English, come in puzzle types. It measures the ability of the speaker to identify the key information that may not seem very relevant by properly combining distracting information that may not seem very relevant. I think this is information that reveals what kind of talent the Korean education system wants to cultivate.
Honestly had to fast forward thru the questions, because they made my head hurt 😆 but the words by Mr. Smith at the end ring so true. My parents were so strict about grades and tests and college, they thought they were the end-all, be-all for my future life and now I’m a stay at home mom 🙃 teacher in my former days. Hope to eventually get back to the classroom, but it’s the best decision we made as a family. I’m proud of everything I worked so hard for, but I don’t push my kids as hard as my parents pushed me. It’s not worth the stress. Btw my husband is very successful in his business, very hard working and barely finished 2-year college. 😉
As a 53-year-old neurodivergent who wants to do my PGCE to become a teacher. I am currently studying to do my GCSE's in English and maths, and I have to say that studying for those 2 GCSE's, is far harder than when I did my master's degree.

It's for korean, but it's crazy that it's determined which university they can go 😅
this was a fun video! i really like the headmaster

Sat perfect score is 1600 now
Woohoo. Complete new videos back on KE channel!
Aww it's been a while sir! Nice to see you again!! 😍
Mr Smith is the best Headmaster/Dean/Principal I've ever seen
By happenstance, Josh knew Dave and introduced his students to korean food and culture, their personalities and popularity earned them a trip to South Korea
I’m not Korean, but I studied translating/ interpreting/ linguistics and this reminds me of the Cambridge C1-C2 tests. I’m having war flashbacks lmao
This one hits home! I really hope you don't get too stressed about career, life and success, wish you all the luck
Josh and team, thanks for creating this video. Hopefully this brings insights to Korean Education Department.. I doubt they will change though

Interesting to know that we have many things in common!

This is the first ever Korean Englishman video that's made me zone out with my eyes glazed over
All the very best of luck to all the students who will be taking the test!!!
As a 53-year-old neurodivergent who wants to do my PGCE to become a teacher. I am currently studying to do my GCSE's in English and maths, and I have to say that studying for those 2 GCSE's, is far harder than when I did my master's degree.
