I grew up in Japan and I took the SAT and honestly it was ridiculously easy. This does not mean that I am smart. For sure, if you were to ask any junior high school student in Japan to solve the SAT, especially its math, at least 90% of them would get a perfect score. I have heard many stories of kids who were always at the bottom of their grade in Japanese schools and were ridiculed by everyone, but then went abroad to study and were treated like geniuses there, and at least as far as the SAT is concerned, it seems to be true.

I looked at a few SAT tests and their math sections are surprisingly easy, reading questions seems to be rather hard compared to math sections but even though my English isn't that great most questions seemed easier than the reading questions in Turkish university exams. I kinda disagree. I'm European. Out of circumstances I'd like not to disclose, I never made it through the high school. There is a free test online if you can enter a university in Japan. It was not a big deal tho. The only problem I'd find difficult is the way japanese students are taught in high schools - don't use your brain, just remember a lot, and I mean A LOT of stuff only to pass the tests.
kinda same feeling I get whenever I study I get excited and feels challenged due to its difficulty for me to understand and once I am able to understand it completely and answer it well it feels very good but once I'm done studying or answering certain questions I go back to my usual habit of being too distracted with many stuff like gaming and many more that after a week or a few days or so I almost forgot what certain parts of it did I forget once I return studying
Looking at SAT questions after having gone to university and struggling through topics like calculus 3, diffeq, linear, etc., I agree when he says "these questions could be done by middle schoolers" or "high schoolers" because yeah. . . They are pretty easy if you just read and understand what they're 'expressing'.
That is why it is called the SAT. It tests aptitude lol the scholastics aptitude test. ACT is a bit more challenging. And use more for IVY League schools. Though it could have changed here recently.

But the math isnt even the hard part in the SAT since I think people dont know, but most of it is trick questions or formulas forcing you to think more on reading the question. The challenging parts are the Reading and more so on the Writing parts. But it was still cool to see someone like him solve the math.
Now I know where the CSE took inspiration. Here in Philippines, it's the same. 30/160 questions are math related while the rests is just reading comprehension.
@waveril5167 Well that's because they are making the students think it's harder just because they write 2-3 sentences for each question, but we all know it's gonna be repeating and unnecessary to write " I would have to say that the answer is going to be ____ because when we ______ we can find out that etc." You see what I mean it becomes bland and not engaging as they keep repeating the same sentences for answers most of the time. But believe it or not the SAT does have a essay portion which people rarely do since you know its optional and they know people are gonna keep doing runons especially higherschool level so why would you need to write unnecessary things when they can just make the questions tricky so you HAVE to critical think about it second guessing yourself and tbf makes it more fun and potentially could be harder if the answer you got was on the multiple or not. But yeah Switzerland does have good schooling though since you and the teachers get more freedom to do your own things/activities definitely better for the students over there. And I just remembered I'm pretty sure all private/charter schools are like that that's why the "smarter" students mostly come from those schools and if you at the way the teachers teach it's because they have more freedom to do their own activities. Idk how I got here but I'm done talking and no this didn't take long to write probably like 4 minutes thinking and writing as I go and this is basically what runon feels like.
@jame254 In the US the ACT is valued more everywhere lmao the SAT is like I said critical thinking with the trick questions but the ACT is more knowledge wise and way more questions that's why it takes so much hours to complete it (I forgot how many hours don't wanna) search)
I'm a Japanese who graduated from a university in the West. I have to say there are pros and cons on both the western and asian educational system. The Western educational system has more strength in presentation, discussion and critical thinking whereas Japan or east Asia focuses on solely solving "academic questions". I gotta say the top students are not very different but Asian system makes you put more "hours" which I think is an excessive amount and unnecessary for the most students.
I’ve always felt the US system has a nice balance. People can trod along and get a basic, functional education if their ambitions don’t lay in academically challenging fields, or people have the resources to push themselves for the best. Like you said, there isn’t a difference between the top students. Any top student in the US would say exactly what he did about the difficulty of the exam (and the video giving the percentage who get a 1600 is very misleading as that includes the 2 English sections. It’s closer to 2-3% getting an 800 in math, with many more hovering in the 750 range.) I’m at a top college in the US and I feel like I’m not just having academics shoved down my throat. I get to read and discuss ancient literature, learn about other cultures, etc. I’d hate to be in the environment that they have in Japan personally.
Exactly I know so many people who are great at math and functional thinking but lack creativity or critical thinking because all they learned was how to solve math problems and tricking for solving those problems

I got a perfect score on the math section of the SAT, here is my take - it isn't necessarily a test of difficulty, as it only covers up to algebra 2 and some very basic concepts of pre calc (radians, basic trig functions). It's meant to be a test of endurance. It's a 4 hour long test, and you are taking the math section right after a 1 and a half hour difficult reading and writing section. At this point, you are already fatigued (also you're taking the exam at 7am). Then you have to take a something like 70 or 80 question math exam. At that point, you are so tired you will make silly mistakes on the easiest problems.

The hardest part of the test is the wording, it’s all stuff we’ve already learned, but they word it in a way that confuses you. Even for the math section.
The entrance exams for the University of Tokyo in mathematics, physics, and chemistry are exceptionally challenging, with only a handful of individuals nationwide able to achieve an 80% score. (I have taken both the SAT and the University of Tokyo's entrance exams.)
The SAT isn’t the main focus of the college admissions. It makes perfect sense that the sat is not as hard as the university entrance exams because most asian countries give these exams out shortly before or after graduation. The sat is meant to be taken in your junior year of high school at the latest.
Surely, this has to be the lowest level maths exam America has. I'm googling it now and am shocked that most US high schools don't even teach calculus until college. Something is broken in the education system there. Talented students would be better off self learning online.
The SAT is designed so that people can take in their third year and if calculus is taught at all it's usually to seniors or 4th years. For example, I went to a pretty good high school by American standards, even then it was rare to see 3rd years in calculus, at best you may see some in pre-calculus.
The SAT math exam is meant to be a general exam for all students . Putting calculus questions on there would give many students a big disadvantage . Talented students take AP calculus or dual enrollment math by the end of their HS
Many highschoolers in the US take Calculus and further into the math tree if they take extra classes and AP classes. It's just that you don't quite need calculus for most jobs outside of school.
Honestly im envious of him, my memory isnt the greatest so ive forgotten a lot of the basic stuff, im very scared in all honesty for my future math courses :(
Ngl as someone from Germany, this test is way easier than any Abitur Math Exam (our equivalent to high school). Based on the questions shown in the video I would definitley score at least 95/100. As a finished computer science student I am obviously way to over qualified for the exam, but I am still sure our Abitur exams were way harder.
I tutor students in the United States in mathematics. With few exceptions, they don't know much, even the "advanced" ones. It's shocking. The SAT is not a difficult test. Before 1994, the exam was more g-loaded, i.e., it correlated more strongly with IQ. It was a bit more difficult to prepare fully for the exam. Now I do test prep, and have increased the scores of several SAT test-takers by 300 points total. In short, it's a more coachable exam. Being highly educated will automatically increase your score on both sections -math and verbal - of the exam. A friend sat for the exam at age 60 and had an aggregate score of 1460, with 800 on the Verbal portion of the exam. I took it at age 65 and scored a perfect 1600, and never felt pressed in the least. I did it because I wanted to employ the prep system I teach students who will take the SAT, to see how I might improve my product. Needless to say, my system works well, but not as well for others perhaps as it did for me. The reason? I know a lot more than the students do; I have a more nuanced brain. And honestly, I'm not depending on my score to get me into a top university. I did that already, so I'm immune to pressures that can overwhelm them.
it is supposed to be easy american students learn this in middle school as well lol, we do multivariable, linear, calculus, differentials in high school
^ ^ this right here. people thinks american education is bad but theres also a factor that some people in america dont give two shits about their score for one thing. in asian countries ik damn well its strictly ruled that they have to study and try their best to do well on their entrance exams, which is diff from a standardized test. Also in Asia their tests mean everythig while in america sat is only 1/4 or 1/3 of whats important. Also ppl who dont go to america dont understand that we all learned all the SAT content (usually) in middle school and are learning shit like pre calc at minimum to more advanced math like multi and calculus, ap physics etc. But thats only on average. some schools like harker high school have crazy ass people who already know calculus by freshmen year and take multi in like sophomore year@@anishyarra3618

The SAT has no hard problems, it's the time that gets you usually. It's not enough to solve the problems, you have to do it in the time limit, which is a pretty big ask for highschoolers
The SAT is easy, but it’s the pressure that everyone puts on the students that makes it more difficult. That’s why sometimes people get a bad score because of the pressure, as well as the time limit. I had extra time accommodations so it was easy for me, but for someone who doesn’t have that time, they’ll be in a lot of pressure and are more likely to get a lower score

@@kume_VRC I know, but I did the same thing and I was a average Brazilian high school kid at the time. Like, the SAT is mostly 8th grade math if we consider what I (and most students) learned in Brazil
Remember that Math is only one part of the SATs. It might have changed by now, but I originally took my SAT in 2015 and I remember a lot of the questions being straight up logic/IQ questions, where the wording was designed to trick you. It would be stuff like, “if this thing is true, then what can you infer about that thing?” My math score was the highest because a lot of the trick questions were just straight up confusing on purpose.
The SAT is brought down by needing to cater to the ‘average’ of American education. Something a little harder might be the AP exams, but even then he might breeze through them 😅
The hardest part of college admissions are having an impressive track record to impress the colleges. SAT score isn’t enough so that’s why it’s super easy, even Harvard won’t just accept everyone with a 1600
You do have to consider that the questions on the SAT are usually middle school/9th grade level as it is usually taken halfway through highschool in 10th/11th grade. Also, many students take classes in math multiple years ahead of the intended pathways. Those who take the SAT in the US who are in those higher level classes usually also find that the SAT is more easy than expected because they are taking courses like Calculus when the test is based in Algebra 1 standards. Really, it isn’t so crazy that he says middle school students could solve most of this because it really is true even in the US.
Also, colleges do not consider the SAT as the most important thing when selecting students. Other factors like GPA, extracurriculars and clubs, family situations, essays, and more are much more important. One 1600 on the SAT won’t be what gets you into a good college.
I am Japanese. since childhood, Japanese people have been taught from an early age that it is important to get a high score on a test. But I don't think it's good to judge everything by test scores. So I respect the fact that they value not only test scores but also evaluation of parts like in the United States
Exactly. In the US, top universities care little about a perfect SAT, it is not viewed as very impressive. They care much more about your accomplishments outside the tests
@@tyler-iy4jkThat is very incorrect. As a college student, Colleges do care a lot about the SAT and your score. It is seen as very impressive to get a 1600 perfect score as a student in the US. @@HieNebthere’s no Harvard entrance exam. In the US universities look at your SAT/ACT score, GPA, recommendations, achievements, and essays they ask you write for them.
ACT/SAT math is really pretty straightforward. The problem is that, like most things, they must be refreshed when unused. Most get by during their daily life with just simple additions, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some fractions here and there. If you aren't a math wiz that is constantly studying the subject, your literacy on the subject will become rusty. Those with an excellent memory will have a better chance of success on the exams since the American study/educational culture is less intense than in countries such as Korea, China, and Japan. Many individuals don't study for these exams and wing it with their initial compacity. I remember taking the exams for the first time and not seeing some concepts for years. Low scores are mainly an effort and motivational problem. American students don't feel the familial and social pressure of taking these exams on a large scale. One of the biggest reasons it is easier to get into university here in the States is due to the number of options outside of Tier 1 and Tier 2 colleges. Another is the financial status of Americans being better.
What I know is that top level universities in US also take entrepreneurial potential of students. This explains why things like gold medals of competitions (like IMO, Ipho, computer, etc.) don't guarantee seats.
@@gepliprl8558 Yep, a lot of monetary value is placed on students. They are treated like a stock by top Universities. They want to know how much they can get out of you. However, that is understandable, especially in the case of private universities. They always chase funding for their next parking garage or school of business building. It doesn't matter if you might be fairly smart if all you are going to do is work a 9-5 making low to mid-six figures. They are chasing more than that in donations.
I haven't watched yet, but as a post-university-graduate scientist, I can assure you that the SAT or any high-school-level test is terribly easy for me (and a lot of my colleagues) now. The SAT may cover regionally or culturally specific information that I wouldn't expect a Japanese person to know just based on their intelligence. For instance, English literature and American history would be very much niche topics for any Japanese person to know about, and whether they could answer such questions depends less on their intellect and more on how interested they are in American culture. I'd be surprised if more than 5% of Japanese people have ever even heard the names "Abraham Lincoln" and "Benedict Arnold" before in their lives, but you can bet most Americans have at least some idea who these people are. However, if they were given study materials beforehand or weren't made to do such questions, then a perfect score is probably a guarantee here...
Japanese children learn about Lincoln in history or social studies classes. The phrase "government of the people, by the people, for the people" is one of the most famous in Japanese classes.(DeepL)
Well, spoiler, he wasn't made to do any of those questions, you know what I mean when I say American culture (another name that works better is Paul Revere), and so it was essentially a 10th-grade math quiz given to a college graduate.
I have no idea what’s the point but… getting full SAT score is literally the bare minimum point to get into some of the top college in international Thai college(minimum meaning that if you didn’t get 100% you probably won’t get in). Like you don’t even have to be the best in the country to do it just higher than average can already get a perfect score
The American education system is a joke. Not to take away from this man's intellect but I'm sure this would be an easy test for many in any of his fields. The fact that it's no more than middle school questions to him shows this. Nonetheless, I'm still impressed lol
Difficulty is irrelevant because it's completely relative. Its purpose is to rank incoming freshman relative to each other so that the picky colleges can accept the top students.

One of my friends also studies law AND medicine at the same time and he has pretty much given up on law/put it on hold for the next two years. Finishing law, accounting and medicine in for years is just bonkers and I fail to comprehend how anyone can be as smart as him.......
For the general SAT You are expected to have a first go around 10 th grade which is basically freshman high school in east Asian countries. There is no reason to put more advanced questions. The SAT subject tests are more geared towards high school level subjects. On top of that there are a lot of accelerated programs student can take. I have seen folks in my university years entering with half the required credit to graduate. Meaning if they want to they can probably speed run college in a year or so due to their high school prep. Also compared to a lot of Asian countries, bachelors degree is not the end goal. Of the three law, medical, and accounting degree mentioned only accounting is widely offered at the bachelor level in the US. Comparing the purpose of entrance exam for Japan to LSAT and MCAT might make slightly more sense.
Chinese and Korean exams→ Each questions aren't difficult but you need almost full score to enter top uni. Japanese exams → The questions are extremely tough but you only need to solve 60% of the whole test. This isn't about the SAT, but I’d like to add some context about his CPA qualification. The Japanese CPA exam is one of the most challenging qualifications in Japan. Even if we ignore the differences in accounting standards, I believe that less than 1% of those who pass the U.S. CPA exam would be able to pass the Japanese CPA exam. When I first took the U.S. CPA exam, it felt like answering basic trivia questions about business. Given the high pass rates, it seems that the exam tests general aptitude rather than specialized knowledge. In Japan, passing the exam requires proving that you have acquired expert-level knowledge.

The SAT math is a joke, english is much harder. The math portion only covers basic level math from 9th to 11th grade. The subjects he talks about that are missing are the ones that are supplemental in the US although very common knowledge in Asian HS's. The key takeaway from the math portion is that practice is important as the structure stays the same and learning to analysis word problems can be tricky.

The challenging parts are the Reading and more so on the Writing parts. But it was still cool to see someone like him solve the math.
Now I know where the CSE took inspiration. Here in Philippines, it's the same. 30/160 questions are math related while the rests is just reading comprehension.
Multiple choice is so easy. We in switzerland don't have them at all. We have to fully write all the answers in 2-3 sentences.

100% agreed. Rigorous problem solving stifles creativity
It’s closer to 2-3% getting an 800 in math, with many more hovering in the 750 range.)
I’m at a top college in the US and I feel like I’m not just having academics shoved down my throat. I get to read and discuss ancient literature, learn about other cultures, etc. I’d hate to be in the environment that they have in Japan personally.

For example, I went to a pretty good high school by American standards, even then it was rare to see 3rd years in calculus, at best you may see some in pre-calculus.
it probably bc every job does not need calculus so u don't have to take it until college when ur on that track of ur job

This guy is definitely an avid poster of r/cognitivetesting.

A level maths is still easier than maths taught in East Asia lol

The SAT has no hard problems, it's the time that gets you usually. It's not enough to solve the problems, you have to do it in the time limit, which is a pretty big ask for highschoolers
The SAT is easy, but it’s the pressure that everyone puts on the students that makes it more difficult. That’s why sometimes people get a bad score because of the pressure, as well as the time limit. I had extra time accommodations so it was easy for me, but for someone who doesn’t have that time, they’ll be in a lot of pressure and are more likely to get a lower score
I got a perfect SAT score at 11th grade, at the same time I got 15/45 in the college entrance trainee exam on that year (I can do the exam, it just doesnt count for anything). The SATs are easier then a lot of my high school tests and exams
It is a very outdated system for sure
You shouldn’t forget that his mother tongue is Japanese.
Something a little harder might be the AP exams, but even then he might breeze through them 😅
can't speak for other subjects, but AP math exams are quite easy by most countries' standards.

It’s just difference from The US to Japan. We appreciate more on paper test while you guys require various activities to enrol in universities.

The average SAT score in the US is around 1050. My 1450 score was the reason I was able to get in some top universities.

Very interesting! I remembered I struggled with SAT as a non-native English speaker.
Even as a native English speaker some of these questions are worded poorly.
Next time, on the contrary, I want the smartest person in America to solve the entrance exam of the University of Tokyo. It is definitely the hardest in the world.
Why a University entrance exam? He should be taking a Japanese highschool exam similar to the SAT. Makes no sense why he would take the University of Tokyo exam. If he takes the University of Tokyo entrance exam, then this Japanese gentleman should take the Harvard entrance exam 🤷♂️
@@HieNebThe problem with your statement is that the the equivalent for SAT in Japan is EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission), esentially they take exams in a university level in order for them to go to their dream college/university. That's why most Japanese Highschool students study in their freshman year or senior year while going to cram school. So the OP is correct in saying that they want to see the smartest man in America take a University exam since its esentailly the SAT of Japanese high schoolers
Bros has not heard of jee💀
Are you slow

In fact, 99% of Japanese people have heard about Lincoln. (Except for elementary school students and younger.)

SAT has proven to be flawed for a while. But a lot of these tests are more about memorizing all these things over the years.
Nah, I'm a dumb rock. I only ever did well on the Math portions but did hot ass on the reading sec. Then again, it is a joke compared to JEE/Gaokao
Difficulty is irrelevant because it's completely relative. Its purpose is to rank incoming freshman relative to each other so that the picky colleges can accept the top students.
In my country a middle schooler can solve most of these problems too. Americans must be dumb af

I'm fairly against standardized testing (humans are bad at setting standards that aren't discriminatory/oppressive) but I feel like at their best they should be easy for "the smartest person" in whatever region. The goal isn't to make the hardest test, it's to gauge where someone's education is at. This dude being super educated means these tests shouldn't be difficult for him.
It was cool to see the genius recognize the difficulty level was good.
Multiple people from my graduating class got perfect scores. One got a full ride to Yale and dropped out because he got hired after selling some program for like a million dollars, one went to MIT and works for a hedge fund doing who knows what. There was a stoner who is still in his math post doc, same university as me, never showed up to class but aced every test, very annoying, also got a perfect score.
Same class had the national spelling bee champion, a two time national academic decathlon winner, a math league participant that made it to the international level (not the stoner), one of the best American gamers in original StarCraft....
I had >4.0 and I think I was ranked below 100. And I was C- on iccup.
i could easily get 100 on the test (non american) in the vid but i am an average college student. it looks way too easy
The math portion isnt bad as long as you know that the questions can be intentionally misleading, but some kids don't make it to precalculus (which for us is like trigonometry combined with a sequel to algebra 2 and some sequences/series) so they do not do well.
The english portion is just fucked though. Im a native speaker, I couldnt get above a 700 on that section (3 sections worth 800 but writing section sucked so bad that most colleges ignore it) and I took it 3 times lol. I HATE questions like "what is the best way to do this thing" because that's automatically a matter of opinion. @@slinger7529

SAT was never about being an assessment of math, just your ability to look at a problem and understand what it's asking, but schools only teach you the math bit. Then there's the English section which is your ability to pull information out of a document and evaluate it. I didn't get anywhere near a perfect score, but I also didn't do more than a cursory review of the material the day before the exam (sorry mom)
That is absolutely incredible. The human brain can achieve so much when you are gifted and dedicated. Not saying it is all a gift, there was certainly hard work behind it as well.
For me it's just mindblowing.
Medicine student here.
Where I am from, studying medicine takes 6 years. 5 years of studying + 1 practical year. And trust me when I say that around half (at least at my uni) take more time.
The amount of things you need to know is sometimes ridiculous. And yet, this monster also studied law and passed the bar.
However at least 70-80% of score is required to pass the University of Tokyo department of medicine.
no, at least 90%~ to pass the university of Tokyo department of medicine
