Also, it's perihelion is 1.01AU, which is only 1% further from the sun than the Earth. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a close approach (if you think of a 3D sphere, this object could be at any point, so it could be anywhere from 0.01 - 2.01AU from the Earth at closest approach). 5:57 *Arecibo.* was a huge radar that shot out pings of radio waves, and looked at what came back, kind of like the sonar of a bat, or submarine. The fact that the sheer power of building tension, ominous audio work, and overall tonal perfection can get me to feel a level of FOREBODING COSMIC TERROR FROM A FRICKING DOOR IN A ROCK just goes to show how genius this is all put together
damn they hit us with four countdowns and then slammed the door honestly though? good. i liked this experience and can't wait to analyze the speech that will inevitably be deciphered eventually and figure out what the hell all of this was
I really liked the concept for this one: NASA Livestream analogue horror. Very appropriate considering the DART mission last month is still relatively fresh in everyone's minds. Watched the whole thing live, entranced by the object slowly growing larger and more clear, but... the ending didn't do it for me. It was a bit of a bait and switch, and the last minute or so has so few frames that whatever implication they were going for is too vague to be much of a payoff.
I guess the payoff is supposed to be that the celestial objects aren't alive but are rather vessels of sorts for beings that live inside them, without showing what those beings look like.
Everything felt great until the door showed up with a literal knob and key-slot. If this was an april fools, I'd believe it and not feel kinda cheated for the long wait and triple countdown of the video. If it was anything else, like a giant hole in the skull rock's head with a creature coming out to fling the probe out with more frames to see the eldritch monstrosity then I would have probably really appreciated it more and it would have impacted me much more strongly than a human-like door that just disappears after a frame.
call me crazy but i like it simply because of my own theory that the door was just hastily edited out of the broadcast with a fill tool; fits with the theme of censorship of all the supernatural shit on local58. EDIT: then again, it is 2006, so technology might be behind that stage yet
@@AmRosary05 This is supposed to be set in present day, 2006 would be when the comet was spotted and named. There are a couple of amateur photographs displayed from 2008 and then one from 2017 at 8:24. And even a false contract from Feb 2022 at 21:54. So your theory still holds up.
I like this video. At first when I saw it I looked at it a little, but thought it was too long and stopped watching. But I came back today and I'm glad it's at the length it is. I watched it fastforwarding in 10 second amounts most of the way, but it wouldn't have had the same effect if it'd been shorter. Skipping and seeing the creepy image just steadily getting bigger was a real vibe. There was almost this "inevitable" kind of feeling, slowly approaching doom, that really worked on me. Another creator I follow online who makes irregular videos, when asked why his videos used to come out more regularly, says "I make videos at the same speed I always have. I make 1 video per good idea I have for a video." I like and respect that it's the same for you Kris, every one is another different interesting concept. I'm glad I'm on the subreddit and could still get the link, I would have been sad to have missed it.
I love that the creepiness or uneasiness at the end does not come showing something alien or unknown to us. Simply taking something normal and mundane for us, and showing it in a context where it makes no sense to be here. Making it unsettling instead.
I love this. Masterful use of audio, timing, and a slow drip of information to keep you hooked into what would usually be mundane (to most) broadcast The skull was never a skull. Maybe the door isn’t a door, either. We expected something monstrous and got something so banally mundane it loops right back around into something potentially so terrifying there’s no sense or comprehension to be found. Genuine eldritch horror.
I like this one a lot. The slow suspense and build. The little nuggets of info and world building. You get lulled into a false sense of security over the course of the video with the voices in the back just going on about trajectory. Then it shifts, you see something, the voices notice too. So good. Cant wait to see where we are going.
local 58 is one of my favourite horror series out there, i can't wait for this holy shit edit: this video was really good at mastering tension over a an almost 30 minute countdown, there's so much to unpack- good job!!

So, I replied in a few threads with this, but for anyone who sees this: No, it's not supposed to be intelligible. If you Google for "local58 close transcript", you'll find a thread from July of 2024 where someone asked if there was one and Kris actually replied explaining that he was just reading transcripts from one of the Apollo missions and distorting them to hell and back. If you can make something out, it probably was *meant* to be heard. Otherwise, it's basically just a soundtrack.
This had to be the most technically challenging piece you've produced, and certainly the most satisfying for myself (a lifelong space geek) personally!!
Wow! I'm actually here for a premiere for once, I hope this video is super wholesome! Local 58, just a completely ordinary news station. Perfect for listening to while looking at the moon 👁 🌔
I think it’s really cool that Local 58 is still innovating despite how oversaturated Analog Horror has become. This feels like it’s so different from anything I’d have ever anticipated from an AH project despite fitting seamlessly into that genre
This is the greatest Halloween present we as an internet could have possibly received, if you see this Kris: thank you for the enduring phenomenality of your work
Dude, the heck? Somehow my brain COMPLETELY FORGOT I had watched this till now, wow, even though i was here the day it released, this is some good stuff man
On a rewatch, this really does feel just like one of those NASA events and that is such a cool aesthetic to tap into for horror, I love whenever I can actually understand what the voices are saying. The only critique that I still hold is that the payoff could’ve been a bit more grandiose for the buildup leading up to it, but this video is rich with worldbuilding and builds a great atmosphere
The door scared me. People often hallucinate what they relate to, and the alien was trying to relate to the astronaut. I also believe the face in space is an illusion, and people as a whole relate to faces---but there really are no faces.
I can't wait to see what the legend has in store this time. Hopefully the writing is even better than the first episodes. MODERN COSMIC HORROR FOR THE WIN!
It won’t have anything in store unfortunately. Most likely won’t ever come up again. I really hope I’m wrong, but I’m not even totally sure what you mean by “this time” there’s still an unsolved mystery, the thought research initiative is unexplained, people dug into the site for months and it didn’t really lead anywhere, there’s no explanation for that giant alien in the GPS video, etc. I just feel like when Kris keeps talking about “the greater canon and lore” he needs to give us a crumb. *anything*. It’s been years with almost no developed canon. What would you say the lore actually *is* after all this time? “The moon is alive, the TRI is a thing that exists, creepy stuff happens like people getting absorbed by the moon” that’s it. That’s all we have after all this time. I really don’t know what to think of the lore, maybe I need to change my own expectations. If it’s just a series of loosely connected horror concepts that take place within the same universe, I totally understand that. That’s cool. But the creator keeps talking about how there’s a deeper lore to be uncovered and this whole massive canon, but nothing ever comes of anything, nothing ever leads anywhere. A new element will be introduced and then never brought up again. I don’t ever think this door will be explained
@@PurgPurg agreed. I liked it better when the videos seemed like found VHS tapes that somehow were corrupted either by the person recording or the channel itself. I preferred it anthology style over interconnected universe. And now it seems that the videos are more about the ARG elements than being able to stand on their own as a horror video.
2006 is part of one of the designations of the comet, not the date of the landing. One of the photographs was dated early 2022 so the landing is pretty much present-day.
@@asystole_ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_designation_in_astronomy#Comets Based on this, I believe that the designation means the comet was the first to be found in the second half of August 2006
It leads up to a foreboding, and then the tension as it went on... Well if we're assuming the same continuity applies. Spoilers below. This foreboding matches well with "A Show for Children". The first skeleton of that show matches with the GPS showing. The second skeleton, with its massive webs and peculiar shape, that is the thing in the Moon. The third found, is a hole. A hole, like the one in Eidolon. The appearance of the door doesn't particularly scare me. However, someone has pointed out that the use of this rather human door (and the fact that it vanishes suddenly) may suggest that it was put there by whoever is monitoring the cast. Likely our speaker, who seems to not only get increasingly panicked the closer we get to the asteroid, but there are other people on the line (seemingly). The initial tone appeared much earlier in the reveal, when distortions first started. Multiple voices, and a telling sign that something was off or maybe gone wrong, but they couldn't stop the broadcast. Those distortions were likely not coming from the rock itself, but in fact, from us. We were actively distorting the footage to edit in a door. Because whatever is in that hole, like with the hole in "A Show For Children", death is preferable than facing it. At least, given how the series has gone so far, that's what I think.
At first I was doubting if I would be able to watch the whole thing, but I did without ever skipping ahead and I enjoyed it, the end was really unexpected.
First L58 video I'm kinda let down by. I love the world building and baffling ending, but it felt like a whoooooooole lot of suspense for very little payoff. Glad I was here to experience it live, but I hated having the video end with me feeling like, "That's it?" Still, presentation and graphics are phenomenal as always. Hope we get another sooner than next Halloween. EDIT 2 YEARS LATER: I don't know what I was expecting back then, honestly. This was creepy, the suspense watching live was incredible, the lore building continued. It was a great event. I'm glad everyone can see it now.
Yeah. The concept was solid but this would have worked better as a one or two minute video. Stretching it out to 30 was more accurate, sure, but also very dull and made the payoff feel unsatisfying after having to spend so long getting there.
@@Belgand All the audio over those 30minutes will be what people will focus and dissect. It's obviously intentional as part of the build. That being said I do agree that 30minutes was too long and this could've been compressed down to say 5 to 10 minutes instead while still keeping the build up solid but not drawn out.
I would say the only L58 video that let me down was Weather Service, but that was the first episode, so there weren't really expectations. So I guess none of them have let me down.

27:40 that door must be *huge*, the very smallest asteroids that have been spotted and chosen to be landed on are at least hundreds of meters across, crazy

But it did gain traction when it was uploaded onto UA-cam

The fact that the sheer power of building tension, ominous audio work, and overall tonal perfection can get me to feel a level of FOREBODING COSMIC TERROR FROM A FRICKING DOOR IN A ROCK just goes to show how genius this is all put together
damn they hit us with four countdowns and then slammed the door

Exactly. Little kids up in here saying how boring it is, but I think the suspense is masterful!
It has to be this long else it wouldn't feel like an authentic space live stream.
@@WobblesandBean Suspense? The only suspense was when I was about to fall asleep.
I love that the creepiness or uneasiness at the end does not come showing something alien or unknown to us. Simply taking something normal and mundane for us, and showing it in a context where it makes no sense to be here. Making it unsettling instead.
I like how the alien was like "Get this shit off my porch" and kicked the probe back into space.
I love this series. My favorite part was when Kris said "It's rejoicing time" and rejoiced all over his throne in the victory position.
I shedded many red tears that day..

I love this. Masterful use of audio, timing, and a slow drip of information to keep you hooked into what would usually be mundane (to most) broadcast
The skull was never a skull.

Got hooked on this during summer break, and man, I can't wait to see more - love it, and so glad you're back!

SARO rolls "worst landing mission ever" Asked to leave the asteroid
On a rewatch, this really does feel just like one of those NASA events and that is such a cool aesthetic to tap into for horror, I love whenever I can actually understand what the voices are saying. The only critique that I still hold is that the payoff could’ve been a bit more grandiose for the buildup leading up to it, but this video is rich with worldbuilding and builds a great atmosphere
I can just imagine the skull zooming through space like: "NYEHEH!"
“NYHEHEH! It is I, the great comet!@

Utterly bizarre. I have no idea how this slots into the rest of the L58 canon, but I adore it.

The door scared me. People often hallucinate what they relate to, and the alien was trying to relate to the astronaut. I also believe the face in space is an illusion, and people as a whole relate to faces---but there really are no faces.

WHEN THE MOON HITS YOUR EYE LIKE A BIG PIZZA PIE
I agree with that statement almost as much as with this one:
DOWN WITH THE CAPELLAN CONFEDERATION!
I remember watching this when I was a kid in 2006, my whole family was there. Thank you local 58 for recording such an important moment
I remember when the skull said “it’s moonin’ time” and mooned all over the place
You watched a space mission with amateur photographs taken in 2016?
Truly a man ahead of your time.
It’s funny how the logo is simplified to fit in the 2020’s aesthetic.

@@presentedbyconormctappersp4565 I think had the video been 10 mins, I'd feel a lot more satisfied.
