Fun fact: the flowers in the background of the “take america with you” part of the first video are known as red spider lilies which are often used to symbolize death and are often called “hell flowers”
as someone who has become bored of modern horror this generally terrified me. It all felt so real. The messages displayed fit to well with modern society. I actually chilled up at the mass suicide message.
Immediately my thoughts about Contingency turned to "What if parents killed their children under the orders of the message, only to be told that it's a hoax before they killed themselves? Would they do it anyway, stricken with guilt and grief over what they did?"
As a kid, TV warnings and the sounds of loud beeping on computers and televisions have always scared me to tears. Warnings of hurricanes, natural disasters, and tropical storms were often on the TV. The news format and creepiness of the television styled warnings...really got to me. That fear has been embedded into me to a point where I was genuinely shaking throughout this video

Idk about y'all, but everytime the emergency alert comes on, i expect some sort of "end of the world" scenario when it's really just a flash flood warning.
Wtf this happens to me too I get really freaking scared whenever I hear those blaring noises on my phone, radio, or tv, it makes me feel so terrified for no reason, especially after Hurricane Michael.
*Inner me*: (Panicking) Something horrible is about to happen. Actual alert: severe thunderstorm watch *Also inner me*: If this becomes a warning, this isn’t going to end well. This was actually based off of something that happened to me last night, during the time Enviroment Canada (I think) had issued a “Severe Thunderstorm Watch”. I legit thought a tornado would form, whether or not the watch became a warning...which didn’t happen. Eventually, the watch did end, but not before badly trying to convince myself not to lose my mind (I was a bit worried, though).
The most disturbing part of Contingency is the video telling you to kill your children and pets first as they are "the smallest patriots" and to soothe your children with a calming voice before killing them. God....
The first video actually made me tear up. That... Is terrifying. "Deal with your children first," and "the smallest patriots." It's sickening. Wonderfully written.
That thing in the woods, according to the GPS, when he's running, the thing is closing on him, the gps leads him to the creature and counting down the distance. The really bad thing is that it says "you will arrive at your destination in 250 feet" and not even a second later it says 50 feet. That thing runs 200+ feet per second, or 61 meters per second. God save us.
Despite all these fake videos on youtube of crytids. They are real and out there. The veil of man is lifting and these things will become more visible. But it only influenced us to create things it can possess. Like technology. And these micro bots and what not. It's just like Solomon.. Jesus indeed is our savior.
I've been with Nexpo since the beginning and saw this the day it came out. It's still one of my favorites. "Contingency" upset me so deeply I was unsettled for three days. I'm old enough to remember when the five channels we had went off the air for the night with the national anthem playing and sometimes with scenes from Vietnam (when the war was still going on), and I can't imagine the horror of seeing something like that at the time with, as Nexpo said, no way to fact check it or anyone to call to find out what was going on. If there were, say, Soviet paratroopers landing on my lawn that would be one thing, I'd at least have some solid intel, but a creepy overnight government PSA telling me to off myself and my "littlest patriots" (oh my GOD) for America, and everyone is doing it? Christ.
Oh, I see, selling comfort instead of giving it away for free? God I hate this economy, it's been built for the rich, and the poor are left to fend for themselves
I wish my GPS was this detailed. I always have problems remembering to turn off my headlights. I wonder where I an get one. On a serious a note I kind of chuckle when I think the about driver following whatever the gps says and I just imagine the person going: "Oh it's taking me through the back route again."
@@XwX1001 That's because it's probably made with the same TTS program as most GPS systems. I think it's also the one Google Translate used a while ago.
Oh, y'know that Weird feeling of concern going down some unnamed dirt road at 5am, when the gps Tells you to turn off your headlights in the middle of the Forest, i feel it all the time.
what makes this so ominous and creepy, is that these shows/breaks are happening so late at night on a news channel. like you stated, it feels like only you're watching which is *exactly* what i feel. who watches a news channel that late at night
Haha I love these. In my senior year of high school, my drama class were tasked to set up the haunted house for the yearly graduation fete, and I had the idea to show them the moon broadcast. My teacher loved it so much so she decided to take it on for the haunted house and we ended up doing this whole circuit where students would come in and sit down at a tv as though they were watching this broadcast live in their own houses or something, and then as soon as the broadcast ended these sirens went off and we had one of the kids in our class as an actor in the group who would take them outside and try to get to safety. We used spotlights to show where the moon was shining, they had to crawl through these spaces and not look at the light, but we'd have actors look at it accidentally or something and just die and shit. Normally the haunted house was just ghost themed every year but I think people were impressed that we were changing it up a bit. Even if it was a bit amateurish, it was lots of fun. Wish I'd known to show the other ones but the creepiness of the moon one just worked so well.
smelly lorenny Dude that's fucking AWESOME. Is there any chance that the event was recorded in full or at least a bit??? If so, I'd absolutely love to see it. That just sounds so amazing, even if it was amateurish.
@@bls4178 My bad, I misread your comment and I thought you were asking IF the skeleton in the kids show was doing the victory pose that's why I gave that answer, basically explaining what he seemed like he was doing, in short words meaning yes he was doing the victory pose, again I apologize tut
It’s also strange how just laying down on your lawn can’t kill you anyway yet in other shows the moon can so surely contingency is encouraging the people to look at the moon
in the meteorological warning, when the DO NOT LOOK AT THE MOON text comes up, it looks like someone was desperately putting the text up in real time since you can see the text change to be more visible
as someone who doesn’t like horror at all, and is terrified of emergency alerts, this video was extremely hard to watch but extremely gripping. Well done.
I think the moon drives people insane. So the message about suicide prior to having to look at the moon (via the victory position) will lead them to shoot themselves out of insanity.
these rarely ever freak me out but emergency alerts are the creepiest thing to me, this is honestly a really interesting piece of work. i also had a fear of aliens as a kid so that makes it a little creepier. love the second theory! i'm super curious about this now
yeah, emergency broadcasts are also the only thing that really freaks me out, most likely because i grew up in israel and saw hamas rockets flying over our house on a reqular basis ...
guess: looking at moon slowly zombifies people, at first people try and get others to join them (ex. interfering with the broadcast), then they physically change into those creatures, losing all humanity. And maybe finally they die
I totally agree, but I think it isn’t fast but once you decompose to skeletons, or to a place where you are almost skeleton like, then you turn to the Moon creatures.
The Moon was awoken by the moon landings. It seems it can control electromagnetic waves and uses this to insert messages into media and electronic devices to probe out weaknesses and attack humanity, which it either wants to rule over or exterminate (eat our souls?). It appears to also have a limited ability to influence minds at night. After a few decades of attempts to soften up humanity and create sleeper agents, it goes for broke and "hatches", revealing its form in the night sky, after which it can directly control the minds of anyone who looks at it and it begins sending its thralls to force everyone to look at it. It seems to be a Lovecraftian god. The patriot one specifies to do it on the front lawn facing the night sky. The broadcast saying not to look at the moon is fighting with the Moon as it tries to change the broadcast and eventually overpowers the operator. The guy in the car with the GPS is following bizarre and dangerous instructions and seems to be in a trance until just before he's eaten by the monster. Real Sleep is some cult-type brainwashing meant to be performed at night. Not really sure where the show for children fits in, but it seems to be saying "mortals are just walking corpses, sad and confused. I will bring you the release of death." The main thread is that the Moon is a malevolent living being and it hates us, and it hurts us through manipulating electronics and subtle brainwashing until the time is right for it to attack in full.

Maybe it's cause American freedom and patriotism is bullshit. The real leaders of America are unelected bankers and CEOs who lobby the government and control it's members like puppets. When a movement like occupy wall street challengers their authority they respond with tear gas and rubber bullets, and when an individual like Bernie Sanders challenges them, they steal an election. They aren't your friends
“Your local law enforcement has been ordered to ensure your compliance”, “it is against the law to delay” and “this message will repeat until there are none to hear it” made me sick to my stomach. It’s hard to picture the fact that the government would expect these things out of people in a situation like an invasion
That Surrender PSA was horrifying. If they actually managed to go that route, That would be, by far, the most terrifying thing i have ever seen. *And im watching this at night.*
I dont know why but everytime i hear that emergency alert system tone it scares the hell out of me of all the things to scare me in this vid its that, on top of the eerie visuals and text is all my childhood nightmares in one. Great video as usual.
Ah geez, i thought i was the only person with a fear of the EAS alert sounds. Yeah, this video makes me feel like someone is behind me at all times, haha.
I feel like the timing implies that it started with man landing on the moon. There were, at the time, theories that the Moon was actually a giant manned satellite full of aliens within, and this plays on that theory almost perfectly.
I have a feeling the Moon its self is the horror, and the 'Him' that gets reference. What if the slumbering elritch horror you fear is the Moon above your head every night? It coincides pretty close with when we stopped going...
Doc Awful that would make a lot of sense when paired with the cartoon actually, now that i think about it show for children shows the moon as a creepy being that's causing the deaths of the characters
Avfusion, excellent point! That would make sense for that time line... Exploring space frightened people..as did war... Combine the two and you get a beautiful storm of fear. And like Nightmare said, in that timeline they couldn't just look up online to fact check and people had WAY more trust in the government
@@lyghtnyng7102 That kind of happens after you die, the body relaxing that is. And if you notice his pre and post death position, it is obvious he died screaming in absolute terror as He watched the skeleton boy from His Throne.
This reminds me of that tumblr post where someone said something like "[insert numerous historical figures] all looked at the same moon. Isn't that beautiful?" to which someone else replies "They all looked at the moon and died. The moon is killing people."
Yes, so very calming to hear him talk then talk again and feel the comfort mmm😌 Also, given that his tone is such a smoothly deep one and that he’s quite eloquent and controlled when expressing emotions, I’m not sure if he’s really capable of yelling or screaming lmao no disrespect to Ryan/Nexpo ✊🏻

Its been more than a year, so i don't know if peeps are still reading the comments or if someone has said it yet, but throughout weather service voices can be heard in the background. I tried to raise the volume but its hard to make out words. I don't know if this is to add ambience or if this actually some kind of message but i just thought it was something interesting to point out!
Piaduo most definitely heard that! interesting find. don't even have my volume up all the way on mobile & it's still distinctively humans talking... it sounded like police or similar radio communications to me.
Hey, i used sony vegas to turn up the volume on that part, sounds just like radio talk to me. Nothing really notable, still spooky to know that there were noises in the background though.
So there are practically two ways to die for that, face the moon and die that way or shoot yourself and die that way. So either way people would still die.
I was thinking that too! Thought Nexpo would say Skelly's feet are together etc etc~ Do you think they have to be looking at the moon as they shoot themselves as a final 'FU' to the aliens? Victory in defeat?
Wait, this guy was behind Candle Cove? DUDE! I remember that being such a huge creepypasta. Took him long enough to own up to it being one of his spooky works.

I just want to say, in "Show For Children", on the bottom screen of the title card it says "Copyright MCMXXIX". MCMXXIX, when converted into Gregorian years, is 1929. This makes me feel like Show for Children would take place FIRST in the timeline, or is at least where the strange manipulative story starts in the timleine.
This remonds me of that one tumblr post where they were talking about all the great historical figures of the past and how they all saw the same moon and someone replied " they all looked at the Moon. They're All dead. The moon is killing people wake up America!"
Being 52, this is especially creepy to me. It brings back memories of the early 70's late night t. v., color bars and the star spangled banner. Saturday nights were for "Creature Feature" with Count Gore De Vol on channel 20 which was UHF as opposed to VHF and the standard 13 channel rotary dial on that giant tube t. v. floor console. Moving your t. v. was like being a pall bearer! It took 4 people - literally, to move the damn thing! Things back then were scarier because we hadn't been desensitized yet. When the lights went out, it was what you DIDN'T see that scared the hell out of you. That's why games like Silent Hill have been so successful. They played on this same physcological fear. I'm going over to check this out right now. Very cool indeed!
One of the creepiest things about the Contingency message is the "this message will play until there are no-one left to read it". Sent shivers down my spine
This series looks like someone really went to town with some vintage teletext hardware, and I really appreciate the aesthetic. I think the distortion is a bit strong at times which makes it feel intentionally creepy over realistic. (to each their own) The Contingency one is my favorite as it's by far the creepiest, building up more and more. Also I like your theme song. it's nice to hear more of it.
I thought he wanted to see his dead girlfriend or wake her up if she was alive because he's alive. But too his finding he found her dead and with a very horrifying look.
This is one of the few series that's truly kept me up at night and sent chills down my spine any time I think of it after months; it's really a special type of horror. I still get flashbacks to this very video whenever I hear Nexpo's theme!
I hate Local58. It's WAY TOO EFFECTIVE. Usually when I watch webseries and the like, I enjoy pausing the footage to look for details, but this stuff strikes me in a way that I can hardly stand watching it. I'm kind of bad at suspending my belief, but the familiar tv visuals somehow convince my brain that this is legit and then I'm not prepared when the horror kicks in. Using such a mundane and familiar setting to camouflage horrific messages gives me chills.
Right?? At this point I like to think I've built up a tolerance for spoopy stuff, but there's just something about this that really, truly unsettles me. I think it's the subtlety, the guy just has a real knack for showing you _just_ enough, without waving it in your face. It's a slow burn that's fantastically effective.
This video actually makes me sick at some points. Taking advantage of someone's concern over national alert systems is a great way to scare people a whole lot. The guy who made local 58 is a genius
@Bill Bo Haggins Did you not read the "insurmountable enemy forces" bit? The whole point of "insurmountable" is the army couldn't do shit, so how would normal untrained civilians stand even a ghost of a chance?
There's something uniquely creepy about patriotic horror; when loyalty to your country becomes loyalty to the government bad things happen, and most scenarios resulting from that are terrifyingly possible. To clarify what I mean: being loyal to your country is standing by the ideals (in the US that's freedom and equality for all) it stands for, and being loyal to your government is standing by the people in charge even when they go against that. That's my opinion anyway.
Not gonna lie, I have work soon and I won't go home til 12 am, and all I felt through the whole video was pure fear and panic. Somehow this really got to me, that's actually real talent to be able to do something like that so easily
I've been watching these videos over and over for years cuz I love them so much and I never even thought they were connected. I just thought they were a series of 4 really good horror short films with a local broadcasting aesthetic. The moment you said "almost as if the moon is waiting for him to look at it" my mind was fucking blown. Good job with this vid.
Show For Children was that video I desperately needed to connect them, because otherwise it really does seem like they’re all independent. It’s weird how that works out... Thanks so much Adam! I’m glad you liked it friend
Hey, thanks for replying! I've been following you for a while now and you're one of my favorite youtubers so it was really cool to watch you talk about one of my favorite youtube series. Keep up the good work. :)
I've also loved Local58 for a few weeks now. The way they instill fear is absolutely brilliant. Hell, I wouldn't even mind if they had clones as long as they're as good as Local58 itself.
1000 people that disliked this video preferred the Victory Position. Is it me? Or is the jingle music on the news announcements catchy and sticks in your head?
"Contingency" reminds me of James Clavell's cold war book, The Children's Story. The US has lost the war; a new teacher arrives and calmly cuts up an American flag, instructing that it is a meaningless piece of cloth. The true horror in "Contingency " is that mass suicide is a message the enemy would nurture. An enemy which also has assumed the mask of institutional normalcy. All science fiction and historical fiction are actually about the era each is created in. "Contingency " is less about the Cold War than contemporary trust of government and media. Are they really the same institutions we grew up with? Can we trust the "historical documents " or interpretations they provide?
So, I watched this for the first time the other day. Scared the crap out of me. Went to their channel and watched the new video and I couldn't watch it alone. I was telling my mom all about it at a restaurant last night and while we were there an Amber alert came across everyone's phones. I don't know if I've ever been triggered so hard in my life.
Same here. I was watching local58 with my brother. we were talking about it and The video was paused. And low and behold I hear a tornado warning from the tv in the other room.
It's just old distorted video. It's kind of common in horror media. It even has some Fallout vibes with how it pushes disturbing subject matter as just a normal occurrence.
from someone who is from outside of United States, its not really that scary. The channel was made by a person, yes? So this is all just basically edgy art creations, no?
@@machigiceb7788 no. The USA has been wanting to do this through surfaced documents to their own people. Mass killing, mass Graves, mass genocide. They try to come up with something different everyday to make us hand over our guns... The fact that this could/ already happened in a different dimension; let alone this dimension, scares people to the core.
Your mention of the Cold War in the video reminded me of a historical false missile report to the USA during it, they thought the rising Moon was dozens of inbound Soviet missiles. Interesting, huh?
I feel like there are so many channels dedicated to creepy stuff and jumpscares, stuff that only really gets to you at night. The thing about Local58, to me at least, is that it isn't just creepy or scary, this shit is terrifying. It's 2:00pm right now where I am and I just watched Real Sleep and I'm yet again utterly surprised by the way their videos make me feel. there isn't anything inherently super scary about the video until the end with the "Don't see a doctor" message, but I left the video with a true feeling of terror. My heart was beating a little too fast, my hands were shaking a bit, the video just feels... wrong. I don''t know the science of how it works, or the art of making horror videos, but god damn can I appreciate when something is good.

Christ.
I was comforted until I read the other comment 😂

Oh, I see, selling comfort instead of giving it away for free? God I hate this economy, it's been built for the rich, and the poor are left to fend for themselves

I totally agree, but I think it isn’t fast but once you decompose to skeletons, or to a place where you are almost skeleton like, then you turn to the Moon creatures.
No wonder why Gru try to steal the moon
I will bring you the release of death."
The main thread is that the Moon is a malevolent living being and it hates us, and it hurts us through manipulating electronics and subtle brainwashing until the time is right for it to attack in full.

Contingency is genuinely the scariest thing I have seen in a while. Truly horrifying.

@@TheTuza1998 Case Nightmare green.
No shit. Especially loyalty to that lousy polecat Johnson? He was history's greatest monster until Carter came along.
That horror already exists in this world right now, ehem China
No one is fit to rule other people
That is the most perfect explanation I've ever seen for the topic of toxic loyalty.
I think it's more about supporting your people rather than ideals.

Adam McKibben Did you notice the Skeleton's final pose is the "Victory position"? It might be a coincidence :/
Phantom Films YT holy shit.
Rando: Insults me
Me: Go Commit Victory Position
Michael Piperni hahahaha
This is just a great comment if anyone says less they can go commit victory position
1000 people that disliked this video preferred the Victory Position. Is it me? Or is the jingle music on the news announcements catchy and sticks in your head?
Remember the three "F"s.
@@Cryuigg best comment on UA-cam*
"Contingency" reminds me of James Clavell's cold war book, The Children's Story. The US has lost the war; a new teacher arrives and calmly cuts up an American flag, instructing that it is a meaningless piece of cloth. The true horror in "Contingency " is that mass suicide is a message the enemy would nurture. An enemy which also has assumed the mask of institutional normalcy.
All science fiction and historical fiction are actually about the era each is created in. "Contingency " is less about the Cold War than contemporary trust of government and media. Are they really the same institutions we grew up with? Can we trust the "historical documents " or interpretations they provide?
the enemy has already infiltrated the media in the real world, it's just in a more subtle way, though it gets more blatant everyday
So, I watched this for the first time the other day. Scared the crap out of me. Went to their channel and watched the new video and I couldn't watch it alone. I was telling my mom all about it at a restaurant last night and while we were there an Amber alert came across everyone's phones. I don't know if I've ever been triggered so hard in my life.
those amber alert signals make me jump sometimes, and the weather service ones. don't know why though
@@christophert.120 Probably because it goes "SCREEEEEEE danger"

Same here. I was watching local58 with my brother. we were talking about it and The video was paused. And low and behold I hear a tornado warning from the tv in the other room.

local 58 has taken on a horror aesthetic like vaporwave

Horrorwave
It's just old distorted video. It's kind of common in horror media. It even has some Fallout vibes with how it pushes disturbing subject matter as just a normal occurrence.
it's a meme
@@ethankennedy9761"Aesthetic" means look. So they meant "a horror look". That's it.
As scary as it is, I have to say the music in the schedule screen is quite pleasing

Owen Hawken imma sample that vibe and make a Lofi Jazz track out of it.....
That’s how they get you
I had that same reaction with the mall music in Dawn of the Dead (1978).
Me too, I thought it was the most calming part about it.
I love how half of the comments are people who were genuinly creeped out and the other half are just memes 😂
It wouldn't be a UA-cam comment section without an abundance of memetards.
Karen approves of this whilst talking to the manager of the channel.
from someone who is from outside of United States, its not really that scary.

Can I have the source for further reading?

Dude every video gives me goosebumps
I was kinda scared to look at the moon for a second.....then I remembered it was fake and I felt really stupid...
No monsters, no serial killers, just pure terror
Dont worry im afraid to go take a piss cuz theres a mirror in my bathroom
This kind of stuff scares me more than any horror movie they could put out. Love it.
