Historical Catalysts of Medical Mistrust in African American Individuals Within the 21st Century

- The lack of racial diversity in North American medical research. This presentation will focus on the news articles titled “Racially Diverse Cell Lines Needed for Precision Medicine to Reach Underrepresented Populations”, (Medical News Today, 2019) and “Medical Mistrust Linked to Race and Ethnicity”, (AJMC, 2021). The first news article discusses a study on the lack of racial diversity in cell lines utilized within medical research such as breast, prostate, and cervical cancer, (Hooker Jr., 2019). The second news article discusses multiple different studies that determine the correlation between medical mistrust and ethnicity.

What blows my mind is that even with all of this evidence of the undeniable history of American physicians uninformed experimentation, torture of black AND brown women and men PLUS the implementation of eugenics, we STILL practice these modalities in modern medicine (ie: the entire practice of gynecology) - what is it going to take for us to wake up and reclaim our health and healing practices?

Maybe there is a “John Hopkins” in Florida. They didn’t say they went to “Johns Hopkins”. The video needs to be fact checked. That being said, If the pandemic taught us anything, its that the medical community has taken steps backwards when it comes to building trust!
