  • Black women's history matters in medicine.
Read ProPublica's feature piece on how the US is the most dangerous industrialized country in which to give birth, and racial disparities in maternal mortality make it even worse for women of color: www.propublica.org/article/no... And they're seeking your help in understanding the problem. If you nearly died during pregnancy or know someone who died due to childbirth related causes, check out this page for more information: propub.li/2Ae5RMi
At 0:54, a previous version of this chart mistakenly said "deaths per 1,000 live births," but it is "100,000" instead. The error has been fixed.
UPDATE: On Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - New York removed the statue of J. Marion Sims as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s review of city markers that could be deemed “symbols of hate.”

Pronounced Van-Knee-uh It all began with the invention of human races. Western European enslavers (aka the original white supremacists) invented human races to rationalize their crimes against humanity. They stripped diverse ethnic Africans and lumped them into one group as “property.” They convinced themselves that they were not really human, but “humanoid”, a “thing” to be mistreated, dominated and controlled. Hence, it is not surprising they invented pseudo scientific theories to justify the atrocities committed against enslaved Africans. This is the whole process of dehumanizing Africans and racism is the system in which the enslavers (and their descendants) enrich themselves at the expense of the enslaved Africans (and their descendants). The people who commit to the system of white supremacy have always used DECEPTION and VIOLENCE as tools to maintain the system. And time and time again, it has been argued that America (as well as other colonized countries) have been a long social experiment.

I had a young black woman tell me that she bleeds so bad during her period that she’s passed out before and the doctors told her it was normal! It’s important to stick up for yourself and not be afraid to change doctors if you feel disrespected or the doctor continues to do harm instead of good.

I was born with sickle cell which is an extremely painful blood disorder that sends me to the hospital quite often. The pain feels like your bones are on fire and glass is in your veins. I've had nurses ignore me and act as if I was some kind of drug addict looking for a high. I had to start calling my white doctor to meet me at the emergency room so he could tell them about my sickle cell and my medical history.
I was near death waiting to be seen one time and a security guard saw me pass out. If he hadn't seen me I would have died in the waiting room because I had acute chest syndrome. Every sickle cell patient has horror stories about the emergency room. I almost can't believe a modern nurses textbook said black people can handle more pain. I guess that's what some of the ER nurses were believing when they would ignore me. It's a proven fact that the low quality of adult sickle cell healthcare contributes to our low life expectancy which is about 41 on average and I'm 39 right now.

Elizabeth Hansen the only statistic they showed was a higher chance of death at child birth without counting for other conditions, and some researcher who died over 150 years ago.
There are other things that contribute to african american mortality rate, such as: scicle cell anemia, what percentage of african americas can afford hospitals, and what percent choose not to go to hospitals.
Besides doctors follow strict guidelines for each and every patient, so 'racism' doesnt apply when the same procedures are done to african american, and white women. And if they choose not to follow procedures, or screw something up the patient can sue.

    • @dylanmier5370

    • @noahwalters2732
      @noahwalters2732 6 років тому

dylan mier how are they systematically 'profiled and prosecuted'? If you can point to direct individuals and prove they are racist I will help bring them to justice, but if you just say 'society is racist' without any evidence I cant help.
I understand black women are more likely to die during child birth, but this can be due to genetic traits more prominent in african Americans, such as scicle cell anemia, or other dissorders. If patients didnt recieve care because of systematic racism the number of women dieing at childbirth wouldn't be 60/100,000 it would be more along the lines of 1000/100,000, or 1/100.

When I ask her why she said she said gestational diabetes with me. Her doctors wouldn’t take what she said seriously and would often just ignore her until my mom fainted during a check up with her doctor because of low insulin. The doctors still didn’t believe something was wrong until she begged them to give her insulin and to prove to them that she had gestational diabetes. I was born early because the doctors didn’t want to believe my mom when she said something was wrong. I recently had to have a back tooth removed and part of my infected jaw. The surgeon was white and he prescribed me with ibuprofen after that. After getting home and sleeping. The anesthesia started to wear off and I took an ibuprofen. My jaw was in so much pain. I just laid there. The surgery was on a Thursday. My jaw was hurting so bad that I slept all day that Friday and sat. Sunday my jaw hurt so bad that I was rolling in the bed and I couldn't sleep. Monday morning I called my dentist office and they told me to come in immediately. My dentist is a black woman. I explained to her the pain and she asked me's what did the surgeon prescribed me and I told her ibuprofen. It's like her jaw dropped. She said he had to cut out parts of your jaw that was completely infected. Which is a painful thing. And then she prescribed me something stronger. When I got home I had pudding and took the medicine and I instantly started feeling better. I'm now able to talk and my jaw feels a million times better and it's healed. All because my black dentist new what was up with the surgeon. Smh. Life isn't fair when you're a black woman, especially when you gotta get a procedure done.

I’m a black man. When i was 16 i had surgery for scoliosis and had 2 metal rods put on my spine. When my epidural was removed 2 days after surgery instead of being given prescription pain medicine they gave me Tylenol because he believed that the pain was not great enough for any prescription pain killer.

    American history is so sickening.
Horrible, evil and hateful devil's doing those experiments.
Could you imagine the pain those women went through and they were tossed to the side like animals when they died.

Tommie Brooks it is. It’s very sickening and it kind of makes me sick to live in America.
But again, hey. I don’t live in the mainland so that’s not how my state became, so I’m kind of glad of that.

There is also a sordid history of medical experimentation of the disabled and those with mental and/or emotional issues. It breaks my heart to read stories like Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa cells. It breaks my heart even further to realize that even with the wealth of documentation, this comment section is littered with trolls, deniers, and racist who seem to be allergic to any history lesson that doesn't make them heroes and saviors.

Hey Team VOX. Thanks for the excellence in your reporting. As Rebecca Smaelie said it is sad that UA-cam is the only outlet for real history. But, I am glad you are here to educate all generations. This is solid work you can be proud of and shows the best talent in journalism.

And non-black people still ask “Why are black women so angry?”
    It’s persistent, institutional, generational trauma that’s why. Obviously, I ain’t a woman.

muuri if that gets votes for the democrats then why not but it was the democrats who put jim crow, segregation and slavery into place. You know all the good stuff a black woman is angry about. Still on the plantation so you cant be that angry.

Beary the Bear okay so what people forget Traumatic exp actually carry through your genes. That’s why we usually inhabit our parents fears or tend to act like that. So if our previous generation was torture it’s no surprise the mental stress would carry to their kids it’s in the dna. Just look at either you or your friends I’m pretty sure you act like your mom or dad or have certain tendencies.

I remember watching this movie called 'Get Out' some time ago. I thought it was a eerie and strange albeit great way to describe racism, but looking at videos like this I realize it wasn't THAT far off from reality after all. Thanks for posting this informational video.
