- Dr. Curry-Winchell discusses the gaps in healthcare focusing on racially based medical algorithms and its impact on health outcomes for Black patients. Dr Curry-Winchell highlights historical and current racial practices in health care and shares some of the personal challenges she faces as a Black female physician and discusses how representation can help combat these issues.
Dr. Curry-Winchell is the Medical Director of Community Engagement and Health Equity, Co-lead of DEIB, a practicing physician and Medical Director of Urgent Care Clinics in Nevada and California for Carbon Health and Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Deeply involved with her community, Dr. Bayo Curry- Winchell is also the Medical Director for the Washoe County Sexual Assault Response Team and volunteers as an Assistant Medical Examiner for Washoe County Child Protective Services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell joined the Reno Mayor’s task force and Governors Medical Advisory Team. She has received many awards including the 2021 Young Physician Award from Washoe County Medical Society, 2020 PBS Reno Spotlight Extraordinary Neighbor award, Sierra Nevada’s Top 20 Most Powerful Women award in 2019 and most recently named 75 Black Healthcare leaders to know in 2022. She and her husband enjoy life in Reno-Tahoe with their two young girls. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Yes, it is important to spread awareness. I will never deliver a baby in a hospital again. It was traumatizing and I ended up getting really sick for 10 days.

Between my six sisters and I, we would take anything over the white man doctor who dismisses half my questions, most of my ailments and cannot or will not research, investigate, and find the proper prescription medication(s) that I am in need of. When we speak with the fire and passion that urges us to move, others not only listen but FEEL our motivations of peace.
To avoid doctors my advice would be: Love, forgive, and teach. Eat, drink, and cook healthy. Stay stress free, sleep well, exercise, and listen to your body. Pray, meditate, ground, and sunbath. Spend time with nature and nature’s hostess.

I concur with Dr. Curry-Winchell that the ethical principle of justice is not being upheld by many institutions within healthcare. Trust in doctors is of paramount importance and hearing these examples of racial injustice is certainly stealing away patients’ trust. To hear there are medical students in the 21st century who still hold on to some belief that an African American person’s skin is bereft of nerve endings or an inability to feel pain is beyond disappointing. I will hold on to the hope that changes are happening, such as with the U.S. Task Force and their nephrology criteria on the GFR to avoid the deadly mistake of undertreating kidney disease in African Americans. Global changes are certainly needed in the U.S. healthcare system itself as well as change from the inside out-with not only patients advocating for themselves, but also well-informed and educated medical students entering the field. Now that more of these injustices are being highlighted and spoken on, I hope future student doctors and current physicians will advocate for the ethical principle of justice in being certain that every patient, no matter his/her skin color, is given appropriate care.

Inequity can be for many reasons just because there's an inequity doesn't mean that it's anyone else's fault or that we should fix it with government policies that don't fix the root cause of the problem. I notice today that African Americans on average eat much more fast food and have diabetes and much higher rates than other groups. Is that white people's fault? No and it's doing a disservice to African Americans to encourage them to pass the blame onto anyone else but themselves.

It took way too long to address racial differences in working up kidney disease...In 2020, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) formed a joint task force to review the use of race in eGFR calculations. On September 23, 2021, the Task Force announced a new race-free calculation for estimating eGFR. The National Kidney Foundation is working with the nation’s laboratories to get this new calculation into use as quickly as possible.
Excellent yet sad truth

I believe Dr. Curry-Winchell does an excellent job at bringing awareness to the racially based medical algorithms we as a country are dealing with. Her example of the difference in calculating kidney function is just one of the many instances where African Americans are negatively impacted by the medical field. The medical ethics concept of justice demonstrates the fair and equitable distribution of health care resources and is something all physicians take an oath to uphold at the start of their careers. By altering the kidney function calculation for African Americans, we are unfairly giving priority to other races for kidney transplant eligibility. How is anyone supposed to trust medical professionals if we continue to practice unfair, biased, and statistically disproven medicine? Representation for all races is important to ensure high quality health care, and that begins in medical school. The hurdles it takes to be accepted into medical school nowadays are quite vigorous, and many individuals are at a disadvantage when applying. Money and experience are necessary, which automatically discourages minorities and the lower class from applying. If we can somehow change the stigma on what it takes to become a doctor, we can encourage a more diverse group of individuals to become leaders within the field of medicine, broadening the representation for all groups. There is no reason why medicine should be different depending on your skin color. Everyone is susceptible to the same diseases, so physicians must be willing to treat everyone fair and equal. There needs to be more education on how different diseases present on different skin colors. A majority of physicians are unable to recognize the same dermatological condition on an African American, as they would a white person. This leads to underdiagnosing and under prescribing the right medications for many African Americans. How can we assure physicians are keeping their patients’ best interests in mind, if they are not being properly educated on how diseases can present differently? Addressing the systemic and racial practices within medicine is the first step to take to ensure equal and quality care to the African American population.

My husband is white and I make sure I take him with me everytime so I can at least get kinda treated right , when I went alone it was horrible . I can’t right now , just thinking of what happened to me 2 weeks ago is draining
As a white person, my current labs come from and are calculated by the NIH: National Institute of Health. My GFR which is a percentage of function of my kidneys, its a higher number if I were African American rather than Caucasian. I have thought this odd for years. Especially since I know kidney disease is often more common in those of color, and that diet is crucial to 8mproving kidney dusease!
I hope I am not offending anyone any way by saying this as a white person. I am well aware of my privilege. But I do feel a lot of similar trust issues with being an obese patient. Their is very sadly some overlap. ❤

Fact is that physically different ethnicity is treated differently because there are differences between different diverse ethnic groups. Physically our bodies are different, I am no physician but I understand this. I can't speak about certain specific topics, but very little research and a bit of common sense tells me that we are different inside and out!
