BMW Z4M Coupe - One Take

- The Z4M coupe is an oft-overlooked model in the used BMW range, but with the S54 Engine from the E46 M3, is a strong performer.
Check out Raphael's Z4M at WheelWell!

The 1st gen Z4M coupe has one of the best body shapes to ever come out of BMW. The side profile is perfect.
BurnDuration I love it..also the the previous M-Coupe from E36 era (clown shoe)
BurnDuration Rear 3/4 view is so sweet on both cars.
BurnDuration I truly belive these Chris Bangle designs will be appreciated more in the future than they are today. In my opinion the z4 coupe is his best work.
BurnDuration weight distr. is 50/50. A perfect roadster with lots of torque
BurnDuration It's like a 21st century Triumph GT6.
This guy seemed really genuine and nice not trying to be someone he wasn't and his car is sweet
Thank god you approve of his performance
+taylor wagneers ikr i was getting worried
I liked the co-driver in this one. He seems like a cool dude.
PacificCoastAuto me too, we would probably be good friends irl.
PacificCoastAuto maybe you can get his number
eeterp32 I was thinking he same thing
+PacificCoastAuto agreed!!! unlike other drivers who seem like they are aboslutely ahting the fact that someone else is driving theyre car, or just seem like they are not fully aware yet that they are on camera for a youtube channel that literraly gets thousands of view all the time. -_______-
love the car btw!!! fast lil coupes
concentrate on the car dude
anything w/ an S54 is going to be amazing.
"Big Tujunga's the shit"
This was one of best BMW chassis to come out in the last 15 years. the S54 combined with the tightest steering rack available from BMW @ 12.8:1 ratio is awesome. Really a pleasure to drive and wring out given the opportunity to.
One of the best looking BMW's ever made!!!
Here in 2021, still in awe of my new Z4 M Coupe
I love the way he went about modifying this car; clean, simple and functional. Koni coilovers, Remus exhaust and apex lightweight wheels with meaty tires. Thanks for not stancing /ricing out this Z4M!
For real though. Those stanced out cars with tires that dont fit inside the wells
I am happily surprised to see your review on this car. I just bought a 07 Z4M Roadster in Mexico recently for 20k USD... it was a single owner with 6,000 miles on it. It still had the original tires on it!!!
My only contradiction is I honestly feel this car has a lot of torque... anywhere above 2,000rpm
Stefan Gossler 20k is a steal. I can see this car appreciating over time.
That's a really good buy. Well done. The Z4M has great torque in a vacuum. Spend 10 minutes driving a Hellcat or a new Z06 if you want to feel what real torque feels like.
TheSmokingTire Matt please go home with the hellcat. it's a joke.
Stefan Gossler better tear the car apart, you may have "party favors" stashed in it.
Watermelon I'd happily take a Hellcat home! are you offering me yours? That would be awesome. And there's nothing funny about a $62,000 car that can walk a Hyabusa on the highway. Which is why Dodge has a 12 month waiting list for them, while Camaro Z/28's sit on the lot with cash on the hood.
This video was absolutely great Matt. I love the Z4 in coupe form and it was great to see the chat between you and the owner. Goes a long when they're enthusiastic about their cars and can talk to you about them.
I miss my M Coupe so much and I regret selling it. This video is making me look at getting one again...
arainla why did you sell it?
Love listening in on your well of experience Matt! Also really dig the fact that you don't mind getting into the comments with all of us, what a man B-)
I can understand the grin on their faces. Some 8 years ago my bone stock Z4M coupe and me started a love affair. My car evolved in to a heavily modified Nordschleife Ringtool and my love for this bullet proof screamer deepened. Hooked for life...
DutchRingRacing huge fan of your car, awesome build
Do you know if the z4 coupe has the same rear subframe cracking problem like the e46
@@freedomlifemake2579 Rear springs seem to be an issue with the Z4M Roadsters. I've just recently bought one and been learning from other UK Z4M owners what I need to look out for. Brilliant car and I'm totally besotted with it thus far.
@@freedomlifemake2579 no it doesn't
Thanks, Matt for another great review of a usually overlooked car that's been kicking around in my head.
I purchased a z4m 7 yrs ago and my life has never been the same. I haven't even owned a z4m for 4 yrs now....I miss that thing
I strongly considered one of these for about $25k to replace my S2000 as a weekend/track car. I ended up getting an NSX for a few grand more (check my channel) but the Z4M Coupe was one of my top choices. It ticks almost all the boxes. Rare, great motor, fast, track-capable, looks boss. Only complaints I had were the super thick steering wheel and potential cost of ownership.
yoo rare ancient comment find
I used to work on this car!!! I saw the car and I was like what the hell no way... I seriously loved working with this beast, nice purchase!
Thanks mate ! And thanks for taking good care of it.
These were always one of my favourite body styles from BMW. A slick machine indeed. that thing is hauling ass!
top of 3rd is 115 ;)
Thank you Matt. I have one of these and am a bigger dude, it is 'cozy'. So happy to see a review of this car, not too many online. Everyone and their grandma has reviewed every iteration of the e46 m3, but not the e86, what might be BMW's last 'true' sports car ... (NA, stick only, and light-ish weight)
FINALLY!! LOL been waiting to see a Z4M Coupe review. Love this car, hopefully I'll be able to own one in the future
Best one-take so far. Absolutely love the Z4M Coupe!!
I LOVE the E86 BMW. For me, it's an almost perfect car.
Thanks for the One Take, Matt, and the guy was cool, too.
Thanks for the great review Matt, these are great cars...
So happy with my Z4M Roadster! I'm glad Matt enjoyed the car. The S54 sounds soooo good.
The stance and wheel choice on this thing looks awesome
It's an amazing machine
PistnRods I want 1 in the worst kinda way.. loved it since day one. That blue makes me happy
Matt, I know these are supposed to be pretty raw and I love the format but the only thing that bugs me is you don't get enough still frames of the car. We really don't get to see many details. Just a quick 360 and then you're off. Maybe some more frames of the exterior and interior before you set off?
Eric S Does it really need that? I mean this is a 10 year old BMW, this isn't like a brand new car no one has seen before....
TheSmokingTire I commented on this video because it's the latest one. There are other cars you've done One Takes on that have much more aftermarket work done to them. All I'm saying is that for those cars at least it would be nice if viewers could see some more detailed shots of some of the aftermarket work before you take it on the roads. Engine Bay, aftermarket wheels, a profile shot etc. What's that like 30-45 seconds more of video?
TheSmokingTire He does sort of have a point, you're not doing anything wrong Matt, but for cars that have a good look to them, a good bit of outside shots would be cool. But, also Eric, there is always a wheelwell page provided, and if you really want an in-depth look at the car, usually the owner has provided plenty of pictures.
Jacobi Sparks That's true, Jacobi I'm going back and checking some of the Wheel Well pages I missed. Ultimately, I think some more preview shots before the drive would add to an already great YT show you've get here Matt.
Eric S There are pictures on the wheel well page
one of the best BMWs ever made. e46 motor with a tight steering and chassis
I've loved this car since it came out.
This is what I wanted to see, I'm getting a z4 soon and haven't seen many video reviews particularly from car enthusiasts.
The coupes are gorgeous. Sadly out of my price range, 3.0 convertible for me.
I have a 3.0i e85 convertible, you will love it!
David Jones going to see one tomorrow, how long does it take to get used to basically sitting over the back axel and the big long hood?
Depends what car you used to have really. The bonnet is long, but it is not too bad as the overall car is quite small, so fitting around car parks etc I have no problem with. You will notice you sit very low compared to 'normal' cars. Did you enjoy the test drive?
David Jones yeah definitely is low, the bonnet I'll get used to as you say it's a small car overall just the driving position is different. Visibility I'll have to get used to as well, top of the window is eye level.
A few blind spots as well, definitely different to your 'normal car' but that why I like them. Sick of driving hatchbacks.
Cornwall1888 I had a Z4 (Have owned 15+ BMWs) and it was by far the worsr experience I've ever had in a BMW both in terms of performance and reliability. No LSD, electric assist steering, good chassis but car felt numb. If your an enthusiast you will be happier in a Z3.
Sounds so beautiful.
Thats a sweet ride Raphael. Pretty damn rare too, I think I saw one at a local autox here in Vegas. Cheers man.
I've driven one of these things before... Super fun and fast and they actually have a SUPER nice sound system with great bass. These cars are so quick tho, forreal. Overlooked.
I miss driving those roads in my 928. They're a blast. I have always liked the odd ball m cars in the z series like this one, they always seem better than the mainstream m3s and such.
Awesome car, i love bmw's, one of the best looking cars IMO
I love the Z4M Coupe.
I had no idea that there was a hard top version of the z4. This car looks bad ass!
I'm so jealous of California, Florida has no good driving roads
RAJohnson713 I'm in Fl too, and while they have mountain roads, I'll pass on living in Cali
At least FL doesn't have dumb smog rules.
RAJohnson713 Florida super blows for driving... But we do have the east coast mountain roads of TN and NC and such that are well worth the trip up too.
FRonTLinES10064 Oh yeah, no inspections of any kind(bye bye cats :)
Dude Ohio roads are the worst ever - I'll take Florida roads any day
LOVE THE BMW Z4!
This makes me miss my Z3 M Coupe which was the same colour with 345bhp! Love the Z4Ms too, maybe one day before they start to climb in price!
245* unless you had the rare s54 engine model which made just a bit over 300 bhp in the z3 m coupe.
Will Boehland nope mine was a euro (UK) S50 Evolve remapped with a MacMotoren Airbox
www.z3mcoupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9929
Nice, i should have guessed by how you spelt colour. Haha
I had no idea they made a Z4 M Coupe. Been thinking about getting a fun car that me and my wife can both drive. We use to have a base model Z4 roadster and although it wasn't fast it was a very fun car we both enjoyed driving. I may have to get one of these now. I just can't believe I never knew about it.
i love the M coupes the 3 & 4, they have so much character.
Hey Nissan this is how you make a successor to the Fairlady Z!
TheSmokingTire Matt how come you won't do a one take with your fox body. So interested in seeing that thing run
Who says I won't? I've driven it three times since I got it back, and I've been on the road for 30 days doing real work. Real work comes first.
Six4dbz I think he will do more than just a one take for its first driving video.
Fender flares might fall off....
TheSmokingTire "Real work" being that amazing dream job you have to do, lol. Love your stuff Matt and co, keep it up.
Six4dbz follow his instagram and you'll get more updates on it. He just got new rads and such because it had a somewhat overheating problem, again, according to IG. but yeah the vid is coming soon I would believe.
Nice car man....always interested in this model
My friend has one of these. From riding in it once, I was left with the overall impression that its pretty quick.
This car is brilliant! I NEEEED ITTT!
Beautiful view
Speaking of good roads, there is a really fun, technical mountain road up here in the central valley west of Patterson going to San Jose. Del Puerto Canyon Road. Take that all the way then make a left at the T intersection to go all the way up Mt Hamilton via San Antonia Valley Rd. Very secluded and little traffic.
Lick Observatory is at the top of the mountain. The downhill is even more fun though going back towards Patterson. Highly recommend to anyone to check out that road if they are ever in that area.
Beautiful car! It's tough to decide between the Z3M Coupe and this one.
YES! Finally a Z4M!
That' a beautiful road to enjoy driving your car
Mine's the same one here, interlagos blue, but with red and black interiors. They call it the Superman. Wonderful car, I'll never sell.
Ahhhhh! This is my old car exactly as I sold it to raph! So happy to see it put to good use on twisty roads.
This makes me miss it so much, wanna trade back raph? You can have my M3
damn, for real dude? Whats are your thoughts on maintenance cost and just general living with z4M?
Uhh Sidd Maintenance is just as expensive as any other BMW, but you can do a lot with basic knowledge and tools for a reasonable price. I feel most of the bugs were sorted out on the s54 engine on its run in the E46 M3s, I never had to do any work on this out of the normal maintenance.
This is one of the best cars I've ever owned, and would get another low mileage one in a heartbeat.
i am contemplating between z4m and gt86 at the moment however just bit ambiguous whether the z4m would puncture my wallet if anything fails. Both rear wheel drive, 86 provides me with extra bit of room and bit more practical but z4m is winning me from every angles. Decisions, decisions...
Hey Josh ! It's been put to good use for sure ! I've put a quite a bit of miles on it, I just love that thing ... Although I am thinking about selling it soon-ish and downsize budget-wise. Priorities are changing a bit as I grow older, errh !
I complained the last video about not enough sports cars and the next video is a z4 with two porsches in the background and an elise, guess i shouldve just waited one more week to see that you have a good many small cars lined up!
The point of all this is variety. If you don't like the cars one week, odds are they will be completely diggers the next week
Love these things.
solid car. period
Had two older Z4s, the last one I still have an 05 3.0. I think they are a great value. How does the Z4 M coupe compare to any 996 you have driven? I ask because the price is similar.
So many times I wish that you have a 360° camera to see all around the drive. But also to see the other bits and pieces of the car.
Matt, do you prefer it to the e46 m3? is it worth the difference ? Here in Spain you can get a nice manual coupe m3 e46 from around €12K , and the Z4M from the 20´s, what would you get?
what a beauty
I see the Fiesta lurking back there....any more updates?
One take, thats impressive!
Matt, The steering rack for the Z4M Coupe is the same as de E46 M3 CSL... That is why it feels so tight.
I didn't realize the CSL got a different rack. It's much, much better than the standard E46 M3 rack
TheSmokingTire E46 M3 with the competition package also received the CSL's steering rack.
TheSmokingTire Hey Matt when is the video of the Elise coming up? I've been seeing that Lotus for over a week, or so it seems, and am really looking forward to a video of it?
Sweet Hulk.
I know it wouldnt really be a one take but these would be even better with a longer reflections section at the end where you could talk while not driving at the same time. These are some cool cars that arent out of the box vehicles and I think a final verdict would have some value.
PMCMANIS That seems like a good idea, except the average watch time is generally just under half of the video length. So according to the masses, the ideal one-take length would be like 6 minutes rather than the 12 or 13 minutes I actually do.
+TheSmokingTire Fair enough but the people who are in, are in too the end. You're right, but it's also right that you're not going to lose many additional viewers by adding a minute once you're past your halfway point - they're independent events in stats / economic terms. Great video regardless.
For some reason the video never syncs up right on these videos for me. I watch youtube videos before and after and are flawless but I have to reload these videos 2 or 3 times to get them right.
Is your device, your software and your internet connection capable of playing 60 FPS @1080p? Because we check the streams and it all works fine for us on iPhone 5S, Safari, Chrome, on both Wifi and 3G
"..you want that OOOOOOH shit moment.." I died lmao
This video actually moved Z4 stock up in my mind.
That looks like the car I sold Joshua B from Austin a few years ago. Very nice, great on track.
it is his car indeed, bought it from him 2.5 years ago ;)
Hang on to it; it's a good one. Was bone stock when I bought it. Did the Ground Control stuff, wheels 'n tires, cans. Wish I could attach a pic here; I'll post it to my Google+ :]
James Buskirk I put back on similar wheels to the track wheels you had on it when you picked me up from SeaTac, man I miss this car!
I bought my Z4MC last year and just love it, although given how 2020 has been I haven't driven it as much as I would have liked.
Still I hope the red-line in 3rd isn't 115, although I'm more likely to be looking at the road! But I suspect that combination may be in ban territory.
Love GMR, one of the best drives in SoCal.
Love this car. So much want.
It's worth mentioning the notorious 1st to 2nd gear grind. My roadster continued to do it even after the transmission was replaced under warranty. While the steering is direct, it's also a bit numb compared to the e36 M3. It tends to understeer like most modern Bimmers. Mine was also plagued with electrical issues such as a malfunctioning window blip feature and spastic wipers. The only things I miss are its drift-happy nature and that straight-piped s54 rasp.
Appearently only the roadster understeers, my M Coupe certainly doesn't. BMW changed a lot from the Roadster to the Coupe setup in terms of spring rates etc.
Wow. I need to drive an e36 m3 because I just drove a z4m roadster for a few days and that steering felt great.
Man I love gmr drove up there for many years in my ae86. Even had my first accident there on the backside when I crashed. I was almost top of 3rd
Lovely Car!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1:41
*redlines engine*
Oooo I've had a crisis.
I just LOVE inline-six motors.
Matt, love ur videos. Please do an Infinty G37 Coupe- thx
great appeal trough the wheels
You don't see that many Z4 M's around. To be fair though, you could stick a S54 in anything and it would instantly become awesome :p
GMR is one of the craziest touge roads in socal. Super sticky tires and proper suspension is a must there
Matt has lost some weight. I usually deduct 1 second from his 0-60 times lol
Thats much men :D
Badhans2007 people need to stop going on about his weight
About "direct" steering not needing much effort to change direction .... there's always the cars with 4 wheel steering (such as the Honda Prelude). They do take a bit of getting used to -- you just don't use as much steering angle as in a 2 wheel steering car.
Is there a modified saturn sky redline on your one take to do list? I drive a modified Opel GT Roadster (tuned to 312 ps and 467 nm, KW V3 coilovers, FOX Exhaust and OZ Ultraleggera alloys)and think it's brilliant. I d' like to see what your thoughts on a well balanced Sky are.
toto211111 Not at the moment, but I'd happily do one.
Love the Continental ExtremeContact DW. Have them on my '13 C63.
inline six, flat 6 and v12 are the best engines.
Wait, at the beginning of the video did he say that the ford -forest ranger went after an m5 that sped past?
"I don't tell people about it a lot"
Posts it to UA-cam LOL
how many tickets do you have Matt? @thesmokingtire
Super Car !!!!!!!!
damn this is a I'd love to own
Love em so much I own two
Rafael like from Soul Caliber?
What a nice car. Does the z4 m coupe have lsd? I have a 2002 boxster S which has about 250 hp I think the z4 m will just murder me on a straight line.
The 2006 Z4M Murdered the 2005 Boxster S 987 on Top Gear...
cos boc yes it has the M-diff, same as M3 CSL. It does not have the M-track DSC track setting from factory like the CSL, but you can unlock it. Did it to mine and it became an even greater track car
this is a good collector car
have you never done a stock e46 m3??
He wouldn't make it 2 miles without it pissing all its oil out
I was surprised how low the production numbers were for both these and the roadsters when I looked them up. Finding one in the color and condition you want could be kinda tricky if you are particular.
rotaryfreak3 The buyers guides (www.z4mcoupebuyersguide.com) would help but they haven't been updated since early 2014. Back in 2010, it took me months to find a low miles sepang bronze coupe with nav. Eventually got one with 25k miles, has 46k mi now and likely worth more than what I paid.
Considering both the Z4M and M3 share the same engine. How do the two chassis differ in handling?
Assuming you mean E46 M3. I test drove several E46 M3s and Z4 Ms before I bought my Z4 M Coupe. I'd sum up the differences as follows: M3 steering is slower and lighter, M3 feels just a tiny bit heavier, and is overall softer / more forgiving. I have never pushed an E46 M3 as hard as I've pushed my own Z4 M Coupe on road and track but, especially in the wet, you have to pay attention in the Z4 M if you start taking liberties with the accelerator. It's easier to approach and exceed the limit in an M3 but I personally find it more rewarding driving the Z4. The M3 is also much more spacious inside - even ignoring the back seat - the front seats are wider and there's more space around you. For me, the Z4 M seats are perfect and hold me just right which affects one's perception of "handling". The Z4 M (both in Coupe and Roadster form) has more of the E36 M3's edginess, and overall is a more exciting car to drive. That may or may not be a good thing for you.
Hi Pavel,
Glad to see someone enjoying the z4m. It was my first dream car. Now I'm almost at a point where I can afford not a z4m here in Australia but just a 3.0 z4. If you've driven a 3.0, how do you think the 3.0 compares to the z4m?
Having bought a 3.0 z4si here in Aus too, i have to say its fantastic.
I couldn't justify the 10k+ difference for the z4M, and tbh i don't regret my decision. Absolutely magic car
Pavel Tcholakov Thanks for the comparison Pavel
Theo Chetty e85 right? not the newer e89s? Any idea about how the 3.0 responds to turbo systems? Cheers!
