Absolutely stunning car, just like the modern M3 & M4 people reeled back in horror when it was first unveiled because it was unlike anything they’d never seen before, then it had it’s marmite period where it’s looks split opinion and then suddenly it dawns on you that the design team were 100% spot on!
Thank you Shooting Brake for posting this informative video. I am planning to replace my 3.0si next year with a Z4M Coupé, every bit of info is well appreciated. Also the presenter is a cool guy. Cheers
Absolutely legendary car. I already had a g80 competition x drive and missed having a manual N.A. car. I wouldn’t be surprised if these don’t take off in the coming years. I prefer my 2006 e86 m coupe over my g80 to go for a drive on a nice day
Would love a guide for the regular Z4 coupe 3.0si! From what I heard, the N52B30 should be more reliable than the S54, but the ones available in my area are quite high mileage (around 150k miles) and I'm nervous about buying such a high mileage car.
N52 is a very very solid engine. I would happily purchase a high mileage one (as long the miles are backed up with strong service history). I don't think they have any mileage related foibles, except for the ZF6 automatic gearbox which can present with mechatronic leaks and worn torque converters.
Nice concise guide. I am on my second E85 although in 3.0si variation (which is probably 80% of the car of the Z4M but around 35% of the cost!) and as a chassis they are grossly underrated, very light, and in coupe form tight and chuckable. PS, just a little feedback, but holding your hands up in front of you whilst talking all the time is very distracting!
Great car, went for an E46 M3 instead of this back in the day but I'll have to admit, maybe I should have gone for one as well. Despite its marmite looks (I like it), at least the E86M isn't trying to dismantle itself like the E46 M3.
Hard to split the two! I think it comes down to subjective preference on looks and also practicality. Both are great options. Z4M is arguably an easier buy these days despite being rarer due to lack of bodywork issues.
They are aftermarket wheels called Apex ARC-8s. If you want a similar OEM solution you can get Style 359s which came on the E92 Comp, or you can get Apex ARC-8s in E92 sizes
was interested in that airbox but even with MAF the box and air tunnel is way bigger than default so doesn't it then need a remap anyways ? MAF not in same spot and amount of air bigger than stock messing up the mixture, not ? Leaning it out, burning valves. Or is the mixture auto-corrected via lambda sensors in the exhaust ? Even if, that seems retro-active fix and for optimal mixture stock MAF-airbox seems best (but yeah, the carbon sound is tempting)
I am 6ft /183cm. I found the cockpit to be very comfortable and accommodating. I have previously done a 400 mile road trip in a Z4M with no comfort issues.
Yes, these are nice cars if maintenance schedules are kept strictly. Bodyshape is perfect. To see a mild case of air dicker in action is quite funny too, no offense 😁😁
Good review, but you're somewhat out on the pricing. Z4MC prices higher than E46 M3 which they should be as much rarer, faster with lighter weight, much more rigid, more collectable and has some useful bits from M3 CSL Good low mileage examples can be near £30k and they will likely go up in value over time. ..
We've been seeing price parity within £2-3,000 on examples with similar mileages, service history and spec. Both the E46 M3 and Z4M coupe have high top end prices for the best examples. Z4Ms are almost certainly due an upward price correction in future owing to their rarity however.
sorry, mate, but the audio quality is so bad I can't understand anything you're saying. captions aren't very good because YT can't understand you either.
In Canada people think they have gold… literally just a bunch of greedy owners trying to get the highest dollar….. these are worth no more than 30k cad
depends... Looking at B.A.T., they're going for mid 20's to high 30's. A low mile example sold for over $60k 2 years ago. I just sold mine in the mid-20's territory.
@@xyvyx I have seen plenty not meet bid in Canada…. Sure someone spent 60k for the cleanest example… this might be there dream car… most these days will need some major service.
Great review, but surprised you said the gearbox is smooth....IMO it's one of the worst, notchy manual boxes BMW have made and a real shame for that gem of an engine. Mine had a new gearbox put in it, and it was pretty much just as bad as the previous one. Compare it to a Boxster manual and it's worse in pretty much every way.
Interesting! I've driven two and thought they were both very smooth and slick. Like all BMW gearboxes the shift quality can rapidly deteriorate as the bushings wear. I agree it is not as good as the Boxster manual but I found it was a decent companion for enthusiastic driving.
Interesting.. I think the issue with Z4M gearbox is not the actual gearbox shift itself but the CDV clutch delay valve. This spoils the change particularly from 1st-2nd and many owners remove them. My view, owning a Z4MC for 16-years and having owned a Cayman S 987.2 and 911 C2S 997.1 which were bought to replace the Z4MC but sold so I could keep the Z4M is that the Z4M gearbox is nicer to shift as it doesn't have the woolly cable shift but a proper linkage. When really moving at higher RPM the CDV actually works quite well...
Had my interlagos blue 2006 for nine years. Great looking, beautiful car, always feel special somehow. But, not that fun (except on track) & not really a Great Car.
Some comments... impossible to retain MAF on a CSL replica intake. this car has AlphaN mapping for sure. Miss information like that will affect overall content credibility.
That car doesn’t have a MAF. It has an Intake air temp sensor on the inlet. Which you can clearly see in your video. So it must be running alfa N mapping.
@@johnnyn6022 Thing about opinions, they are like assholes. We all have them and most stink to those who they aren't. I have no qualms about you liking it, I just think its ugly as sheet.
I test drove this actual car when it was for sale in 2021. A lovely example.
Great guide. I’ve had mine for the last 12 months and still absolutely love it.
Lovely to hear, they are brilliant fun!
This the best application of the S54.
Miss mine greatly. Fantastic cars and hugely capable. Great buying guide as many people don't know those items to look out for!
Thank you! Great cars and arguably undervalued in the UK market
Absolutely love these. Severely underrated.
I snagged one back in 2008, never letting go!

The guide is quite accurate. The Z4M is a great car. I can’t really understand why prices aren’t increasing way faster for those.

I have the n52 b30 in my 130i and used to own a z4m. The z4m is made special by the s54, much as I like the n52, it’s no comparison.
Always look for valvetronic issues if youre looking for a normal z4 until the facelift after 2005
Pre 2005 cars don’t have valvetronic.
what a wonderful example. I have a Monaco Blau, is this Monaco? wheels offset are perfect on this one!
Carbon black. The wheel specs give this one a huge amount of visual presence! Monaco Blau is a lovely colour.

Hello! This example has the Evolve carbon airbox which retains the MAF. It does not follow the same design as the CSL intake.
That car doesn’t have a MAF.
