    I’m one of those crazies who converted my Interceptor into a scrambler. I changed the front and rear suspension, changed to 19” front and 17” rear, tubeless ADV tires, aluminum mudguards and a custom paint scheme. The biggest difference is I used the Italian hand made Zard scrambler pipes. They look and sound better but they scare off people who are afraid they will burn their leg. Wimps! 😂 My one hope is that you can turn off the rear ABS. That is really scary on a steep dirt downhill. Some fun when the brakes stop working. I’m sure the weight saving came from removing the center stand and half the exhaust. They have a winner!

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield

      Sounds like yours was a cool conversion. I am sure I read somewhere that you can turn off the rear ABS, but please don’t quote me on that. I bet those Zard pipes weren’t cheap 😳😂

    Thanks for the ride our Ian. Yes i would agree you need to re test when the roads and weather are better. Then you can compare its riding capability etc. I do however thInk the OTR price will put people off, when you compare it to other bikes. Until the next time, Ride safe Mike, Sunny Wales.

    I saw the bike at the NEC last year. Though I’m sure it’ll have a place in the market it’s not one I’d be rushing out to buy. Nothing wrong with the 650 engine just not so keen on the styling.
    Good review video Ian nevertheless. 👍

      Yes, a lovely bike….did you see the bright green 752s ? I like that bike 😈😎😂. It’s a shame they haven’t got a demo of any of them, as I wouldn’t mind taking them out for a bimble too.

      @ I did see the 752 however I was focussed on the green 500 trail. I to would need a test ride and have to way up the pros and cons v established brands Honda, Triumph etc. What do you think of the Benelli brand??

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому +1

      @markb3180 well, historically they were known for quality, but quirky, motorcycles. Now they are Chinese owned, I guess they are run of the mill, but seem to be of better quality than some. Let’s put it this way….if I had the money, that 752s would have been mine months ago 😉

    A cracking ride Ian, it’s definitely an improvement on the old interceptor and I bet on dry roads you will have lots of fun with it, the only thing that I’m not too keen on is the dash, I’d prefer a analog one even if it’s the same as the one on the silver Guerrilla but that aside it’s a nice bike, all the best buddy 👍

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому

      I am with you on that Mike. I much prefer the analogue dash. I also prefer cable throttle to ride by wire. The Bear does have fun written all over it, but will it be as much fun as the Guerrilla 🤔 we will have to wait until we take it out on dry roads 😎

    Another great ride out Ian, had a close look at one in Oxford when I picked up my Guerilla last Friday, it is very well finished and like you said looks better in the flesh than in the pictures another winner I think abit of retro and modern.

    Why did they not centralize the clock?

    Lovely bike, it sounds superb. The colour scheme is lovely. I like the look of the blacked out engine with the alloy on the fins.
    Obviously the bike is not for me, at 5 foot 4, and 27 inch inside leg.
    But, think RE has nailed it for this one.
    Look forward to seeing this and the other models at the Scottish motorcycle show in March.😊

    Well done RE for bringing this one out. Their lead time seems incredibly short as they have released many variants of their 650 in what seems like a very short space of time. At least they have enabled luggage to be carried both sides unlike the Triumph which has the high pipes on one side. Tbh I prefer the grey.

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  2 дні тому +2

      Good evening Jonathan. I also like the fact that it doesn’t take long for RE to send bikes to dealers to get stock ready for prospective customers. I hadn’t really done any “homework” on the Bear (other than trying to dismiss the, “oh, it’s just a redressed Interceptor”), so didn’t know the other colours available. Since releasing this, I have looked at the colours, that yellow one has a Husky look about it, and the other options look pretty damn cool too. Well done RE 👍 There has been a lot of thought gone into the design, though it would have been nice to see a sump guard fitted as standard. I am looking forward to riding it in better weather 😎 Cheers

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  2 дні тому +2

      @anuj.pratap.3 we have some really rough roads here, and the suspension worked very well. A huge upgrade when compared to the original 2019 Interceptor. Some reviewers need to exaggerate or create negatives, this makes them controversial, and brings in more revenue. Take them with a pinch of salt, always best to take one out yourself.

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому

      To me, at these lower speeds, and on slippery roads, the Bear feels more grown up if that makes sense. I felt that although it could hustle through the twisties, if I was on the Guerrilla behind it, I could "have it" 🤣 Does that help ?

      Thanks Richard. I don’t think it will be long until a rear rack would be available. Utilising the fixing points for the passenger grab rail, in the same way the Interceptor one is fitted, in fact (though obviously I haven’t measured it), an interceptor one could possibly fit, the only worry being clearing the rear light. In the meantime, I would think throw over panniers would be ok. I have just looked on eBay, there is a rack already on there for sale.

    You might be interested to know (or not!), that I was there to pick up my new BSA. Would you believe this is the first new bike I’ve ever bought in over 50 years of being a biker! Still got the Classic 350 I bought from them so now 2 ‘British' marks of bikes in my shed! Happy days.
    Toodle pip, safe riding and roll on the warmer months by which time she should be nicely ‘run in’!

    I've noticed the smaller displacement engine bikes are pretty solid. Whereas the bigger displacement bikes you have more problems. Up until about 900 cc the bikes are solid. I've got friends with 500s, 650s and smaller bikes and no problems, just kept up the maintenance. I think this bike should be perfect.

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому

      Not to mention the amount of speed enforcement camera’s (at least here in the uk), meaning it’s impossible to get the most out of larger capacity motorcycles. I remember when 650cc was considered to be a “big” bike, that’s no longer the case. Even 800cc is now considered to be a middleweight. 🤔😂 Cheers

      Ahh well Jim, a bit of an unfair question. When I took the Guerrilla out for a demo, it was on one of the promo bikes which had already been run in, the tyres had done about 500 miles, and the roads weren’t slippery like on this ride on the Bear. I will wait until I have taken the Bear out again in better conditions, and with a few more miles on the clock. That said, I think the Guerrilla will win on outright fun through the twisties, as it is a fair bit lighter, and the water cooled 450 just begs to be ridden in hooligan mode. I also think the frame geometry will be better for naughtiness than on the Bear……..but watch this space for a full and frank comparison.🫣😂

On one hand I totally dig the style on it, it's awesome looking bike, on the other hand, why give a bike 19" front wheel and pretend it can go offroad with 130mm front and 115 real suspension travel. I mean RE's own Guerilla street bike has more suspension travel...

      @@ianhughesroyalenfield But the thing is, it is to my taste. Just make it actually capable offroad. I'm looking for something retro looking and able to go anywhere(withing reason). This bike will fall short on that second requirement...

      @fiucik1 agreed, it’s not really an off roader. Maybe a bit of mild stuff, gravel and the likes.

      Thanks RR. Ahh the Interceptor, the bike that in my opinion re-launched RE. Bringing the brand to people who previously wouldn’t touch an RE (like me) 😊

      @deltabluesdavidraye HE said HE gained 5Nm of torque & fuel economy worse but didn't say anything about HP.
      RE Interceptor 47hp at the Crank at the wheels is roughly 42-43hp at the wheels.
      HE did cause living off bike & does huge miles & the roads are generally good in the US too.

    I'm with you Ian off roading is not for me so it's how good a road bike it is. You really have to admire RE for the way it makes and markets it's bikes although, compared to the Interceptor the Bear does seem a bit more pricey than i would have thought.

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому +1

      I agree Ian. In 2020, when I bought my Interceptor it cost me £5300, brand new, otr. Ok, so I had a bit of a deal, but even still. Now the Bear is much more refined than the original Interceptor, but I think the prices are creeping into unknown territory for RE. Is the Bear worth almost £2k more than the Guerrilla……..I’m not convinced it is, though only a ride on dry roads would allow me to compare the two more evenly. The Bear definitely feels a quality motorcycle though. I will also be interested to take the new BSA Scrambler out, when it eventually get’s released. That would be a good match 😊 Cheers

      @ianhughesroyalenfield You might have a long wait for the BSA it's supposed to be June but knowing BSA it's most likely July or even later. They just don't seem to be able to match RE do they when it comes to bringing a new bike onto the market.

      @ianhalliwell8604 you are right….look how long they stretched the release of the Goldstar after it’s initial showing to the world. I am still convinced that is what killed initial sales. They really do need to learn from their mistakes. 🫣🙄

    The few kgs they’ve shaved will come from 1) dropping an exhaust and 2) getting rid of the centre stand.

    Don't you use a Pinlock in your Helmet Ian.
    Yes the Bear 🐻 has some new design & I reckon it is the best engineered RE 650 to date from what I've seen 👀 & read.

      Yes I have a stick on pinlock, it’s my glasses that steam up in this weather.
      The Bear is, as you say, well engineered, and pure joy to ride. Whether it’s the best engineered though ? The Shotgun felt like that to me, but we will hold that thought until we can get out on the Bear on not so slippery roads. 🫣😉

    I wish RE would address some of the issues including their terrible suspension while price is going up …

    • @ianhughesroyalenfield
      @ianhughesroyalenfield  3 дні тому +1

      Do you have a particular Royal Enfield in mind ? The early Interceptor was a bit harsh and crashy, but I haven’t had any issues with anything else, and I have test ridden a few. Admittedly, my Guerrilla suspension is a bit on the firm side, but it’s handling is superb, so no issues with that. My Classic 350’s suspension is also fine for the type of bike it is. I have been on some pretty awful roads on that, with no complaints.

      @ the super meteor 650 suspension was terrible and hurt my back everytime I got on it. Switched to YSS suspension, safari seat, and risers etc:) I agree in smooth engine and handling just wish they would fix the comfort of the ride and add on some tech specifically cruise control for a cruiser

      @Brettmotorcycles I did take the SM on a demo ride, but it was some time ago. That said, I don’t recall noticing the suspension as being bad, but my ride would have only been for about 40 minutes at the most. 🤔
