The Nissan Z is finally coming soon and with enormous hype. JDM car lovers everywhere are finally getting their dream of a modern pure Japanese sports car with considerable horsepower. However the Nissan Z went through a very intense development cycle where the "400Z" was almost scrapped completely by Nissan. So how did this car finally get built? Let's talk about it.

Toyota COULD HAVE taken from their Lexus brand with the RC (RC350/RCF) Series for the chassis and RWD. And revived the 2JZ with current day technologies like what Chevy does with the LS motors. As if Toyota doesn’t own and have the print rights, have the engine molds, or the current day technology to make the 2JZ better.🤨
@@Mataco717 good point never thought of that
@@Mataco717 I promise you it still wouldn't have been financially sound and would have priced itself out higher than the $50,000 it sells for now. They'd have to redesign the chassis to lose at least 400 pounds with titanium and carbon fiber to bring the RC platform down to the weight the Supra is at, then design a new engine. After designing one, they'd have to build the tooling to make it. None of their factories in Japan are capable of this and it would cost millions to even get that part of engine development off the ground. Toyota hasn't made the 2JZ in almost 20 years. They'd have to completely redesign that engine to make it modern. Build it out of aluminum, figure out direct injection, figure out modern emission requirements, all while still making it bulletproof at any power level below 800HP or everyone would shout that the iron block 2J was better. There was no way Toyota could pull it off without pricing the Supra out of the market a second time.
The new z is the first Nissan I've wanted since the 90s.

A moment of silence for Mitsubishi.
The thing is Nissan has no choice, they have to, they're just a car company. Mitsubishi is a HUGE corporation over in Japan, they make all sorts of stuff, including but not limited to home appliances, electrical equipment and even electric grids. They knew they were beat in the car market and just bowed out gracefully like "ehh, if you still want some economy cars, here. If not, oh well, we're on to bigger and better things"
Mitsubishi started in the right direction back in mid 80's with the Starion and the 300gt but quit and went the way they are now.... selling bad cars to the credit challenged poor folks.

While there are indeed flaws of these sports cars (Z, Supra, GR86/BRZ, etc.), we should be thankful that we are even getting these cars in the first place. Electric cars will not phase out gasoline cars. There's enough available lithium to manufacture about 5% of what's needed. Not only that, there's no way to make them function properly or efficiently in cold climates. The investment in civil infrastructure would be astronomical, and no investor with two brain cells is going to jump at it until there are a certain number in active use. Five years ago, the big tech circle-jerk was around robots replacing human workers. I stated soundly that no such thing would occur. Now it's all around electric go-karts. I again soundly state that it will not come to pass. We're not moving into the Jetson's age. Never going to happen.
@@borla4491 the UK is banning fuel cars from being sold in 2030. Nothing makes sense.
Also, being in product development with something that includes an internal combustion engine, I understand the project cost aspect of developing the new Z. I have a GREAT appreciation for them sticking with it and getting this car done… it shows huge faith to their heritage and their customers. 🤘
I think that's where the true appreciation comes in for this car- them sticking it out and people sticking up for the project at Nissan.
Good on Nissan for keeping it entirely in-house, but Toyota really would have priced themselves out if the market with the Supra (again) if they went solo. If they tried to use the RC platform, they'd be working with a car that weighs roughly 3,800 pounds. The LC500 starts at 4,350 pounds. Neither of those is exactly good for sports car handling. Then there's the problem of trying to build the tooling to produce a straight 6 again when none of their factories at the moment can. So, they either save money by using an existing platform and trying to lighten them up with titanium and carbon fiber, or they stretch out the GR chassis and throw millions at developing a straight 6 that they won't use in any other cars. Nissan lucked out by already having a chassis and drivetrain ready to go. Yes they've refined everything, but they don't have the stipulation of needing a straight six either for heritage purposes. Not saying that Toyota is right or wrong here for the decisions they made, but it makes sense why they did what they did. And we gotta remember, the $40,000 the Mk4 cost in 1993 is almost $70,000 today. Not exactly cheap but cheaper than the stuff it was competing against, kinda like the new one.

Hey good eye bro. Caz see I dont have a problem with the Supra either. The 2JZ made the Supra so I see why Toyota went with the only company this side of a diesel engine to get a straight 6 from. And they did their best they could to give us a drivable FT1. If BMW and Toyota co developed a chassis both companies couldve had great cars and the Supra would be more like the Z from concept to production. However those flaws allowed the new Z to exist so I'm happy for the both of them to be alive when these type of cars are meeting its end.

There will not be a single person that gets the new Z for $40k. Expect at least $45k if not more for a base model Z when it launches, for at least a year. The hype around this car is too big at this point, why would a dealer sell a car for $40k when there are people lined up out the door that will buy it for $50k. The same thing happened with the supra except people were paying well over $70k for it. Consider covid and chip shortages too, its not going to happen.
To be fair the supra mark up dropped fairly quick. I paid 50k (8k under MSRP) for my fully loaded 2021 last year.
@@Badxperiment I'm just concerned that the Z will not act as competition to the supra in terms of price, but rather in terms of performance. Something along the lines of "well the supra is 50k and the new Z has more horsepower". @Brady Kirkpatrick Considering the base Z will have an open rear diff, at 400hp I doubt people will be overpaying. The sport trim will get more attention though.
It said starting "around 40k" which means low 40s. It also depends how far down they strip it to pique interest at that price; the car will easily jump 5-8k for some basic options, excl. dealer markup and obv they are going to be stocking stripper versions of the car. Ppl will be paying upwards of 50k or more I wager

That_Persian_dude: I agree with the first half of your statement, but the second half is only partially true.
Most older guys who are able to get a sports car in the Supra price range, will get something like a Porsche, Corvette, or M3. Toyota put the Supra in a tough price bracket. Why would someone buy a Supra, when they can just dump another 10k and get a Vette? Especially now that that beast of a C8 is out.
If Nissan keeps their word and the Z is in the $40k range, I could see it doing quite well. It would be competition for Mustangs, Chargers, and stuff (which is where the Supra should realistically be, as well).
I love how they fixed the Q50/60 turbo issues by redesigning them completely, they also finally fixed the CSC problem! Steering geometry got completely changed too. The engineering is super cool, its not a q50/60 at all.
CSC ?
Theres no data on the new turbos. Sounds like they are the same from the redsports
"We couldn't just rob that platform and make that a Supra"
But that was what the Supra is. It was a trim level of the Celica before the A70. What are you on about, Toyota?
Point is, back in the a60 a70 days, celicas were made in rwd. So Toyota just had to put in sporty stuff and the supra was born. At those times, the supra was basically what we call a "camry trd" today. Nowadays if Toyota had to do the same i6 rwd coupe, they got no current platform to support it.
@@yang087 point taken
I just wish the Supra had more. The FT-1 Concept made us drool over Toyota again, only to have that taken from us. Make no mistake the A80 is still a good car, but you still get the feeling Toyota robbed from the community. let's just hope the next gen is better.
@@marxteven To me, FT-1 looked like a cross between Corvette (the size, shape) and Batmobile. It had too many "cool" lines and openings and what-not (the Batmobile part, which I hate) -- in that regard, Supra turned out similar to the concept (although I'll agree FT-1 looked better, more coherent). FT-1 being more like Corvette - at least to me, that sounded like a cool idea, but "not Supra".

Thanks Mr. K! And Mr. GT-R.
If I had more expendable income, I'd probably sign up and trade in my 2007 350Z GT for a new Z...I love what they've done, keeping the horsepower up, price low, and still offering it with a stick (Which I'd obviously take over the auto). I think you're correct in that Nissan is basically doing/building what most enthusiasts hoped Toyota was going to do when they decided to bring back the Supra.
Many manufacturers have reused chassis' for different generations of their cars. As long as it works, it doesn't matter
I'm lookin@ u porche "911".
7:29 They do tho. The Lexus IS line is really really good but there is no manual. If Toyota just gave the IS a face lift and a manual transmission it would have been a better "Supra" than what we got.
This is what I was thinking. Why not take the rwd platform from the lexus line. Weird
I hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot by pricing it like the supra
Toyota dropped the ball, they had 2 rear wheel drive platforms from """" LEXUS""" their upscale brand which would have been perfect for an upscale icon such as the supra, and if they would have used the Lexus platform and a manual transmission,,,,,, which would have been technically all TOYOTA, they could have been charging what they charge for used C8 ,s and couldn't keep them in stock
It's incredibly frustrating what Toyota did with the new Supra. I understand it's a good car, but the fact that they just slapped a Supra badge on it to help it sell better is enfuriating. Instead of saving the name for something truly cool and special, they slapped the badge on a sports car that was engineered and shared by a completely different company. Ahhh it makes me so mad. I mean look at the new NSX... it's a high end supercar that looks like a high end supercar. Look at the revival of the GTR back in 2008. The thing was barely more expensive than the Supra at launch and was a fucking wonder of engineering. And then came the revival of the Supra... uh.... talk about a fucking wet fart. Such a wet fart of a car. Also I know looks are subjective but I personally think the Supra looks awful. The new Z looks pretty awesome to me. I like it.
@@chrisallot66 Toyota had NO care to make the Supra. All they wanted was to shut the Supra community up. Issue is they went down the wrong road to get there. And now their sales are suffering because MOST know its not a real supra. Deep down inside every real car enthusiast knows its a BMW.
And the lack of a manual really killed its image. Not saying there is anything wrong with an automatic but most want that manual and BMW did not supply one simply because Toyota didn't care. Toyota was banking on those in Denial to accept it as a supra.

9:39 the Corvette used the same platform from the C4, starting in 1984, to the C7, ending in 2019, 35 years in the same platform
Sure it is. The C4 had a 14 model year run and was really long in the tooth when it left. It was also a really capable sports car with the GS. Although the basic layout of the car changed little in 1997, the chassis was completely new. The engine was new, the rear mounted transaxle was new, the body manufacturing technique was new. None of the suspension components interchange directly or as a complete unit. The windscreen rake and driver position changed.
The c6 corvette is really similar to a c5 but even then its probably more different than the Nissan Z is to the 370z. The C7 was a vast undertaking again, according to the chief engineer Josh Holder only *TWO* components were carryover from the C6, the roof latch and the cabin air filter. The chassis was new with once again no suspension components or systems being interchangeable.
If you have ever looked at the chassis that underlies these cars they are obviously crafted for the same purpose but vastly different. Just because they are all called "Corvette" doesnt mean they are the same. corvette production for the c4 began in 1982 as 1983 models. There were less than 50 production Vin chassis for 1983 corvette manufactured and only one still exists. VIN 1G1AY0783D5110023. C4 production began for the 1983 model year, that is undeniably true. None were sold to the public as 1983 model year cars.

@ThatDudeinBlue the reason the new Z is cheap is because they used old 370z parts and chassis. Toyota didn’t have an old chassis to base the supra off. For those answering , no the gt86 is not a good chassis for a I6 turbo
It would have cost Toyota way more to develop an inline six engine. Nissan already had the engine, and the transmission.
Not the same body style and setup as the Z but Toyota can come in with more good news with more GR Corolla info. I'm dying to know!
The lack of information about that car is pissing me off, I'm very interested in that product.
I feel like just as we call it the "Mk5" Supra, and the "Skyline R35" GTR we can call the Z a "400Z". Having a too general name is always stupid and just leads to confusion!
number one thing I didn't like about the 370z was the interior looked like it was about 12 years old... and you had to pay a hefty premium for that ~aesthetic~, now they're giving us more hp, a fresh cool exterior and an updated interior. B E A U T I F U L
I gained about 150lbs when I did my TT/built motor on my 370z. So, the new Z numbers are not out of whack by any means.
damn, why did you eat so much during an engine build?
Where did Nissan say the Z will be 3600? I thought it was going to be around 32-3300 lbs. 🤔
I'm still waiting on a new Subaru Baja and El Camino.
Hyundai beat em to it
Nissan's market share is shrinking.....it's no surprise to me that the Z was on the chopping block but glad to see internal passion saved the mark.
In reality no ones gonna buy these sport cars. I remember seeing the same Nissan 370z's at my local Nissan because the mark ups are insane. Your average 370z would cost 40k+ just imagine the new Z...people always complain this and that is better but won't afford these cars 😂
Nobody is spending over 40 on 370
My issue is yes its "supposed to be 40k" but thats a base model, when you put the performance spec with options that make it comparable to a mkv supra the cost will be probably close to 48 to 50k whixh isn't that much cheaper. The other huge issue is you will ABSOLUTELY not get these for less then probably 60k. Even base models will be in the mid 50s the crap that dealerships are currently getting away with when it comes to markups especially sought-after cars with og monikers like Z and Supra they will screw people left and right.
Get the base model. Unless you plan on tracking against the supra head to head. You're going to need a new heat exchanger no matter what comes with it, and you can do the akebono swap yourself for less than 700.00. Whatever kind of exhaust it comes with will have to go. So unless it's the interior you really want, It won't take much at all to compete and even beat mildly modded surpras.
@@MenofValueSpeaks you must don't know, those b58's is no joke in the Supra, 2021 and up is atleast 440hp stock.
@@hpickettz34 I know it isn't a joke, it's a been around and battle tested. However, my mildly modded UNTUNED Q60 Has no problem with basic bolt on Supras. My car put down 402whp and 400wtq with just an exhaust and lower downpipe. That's on the stock silversport 9-10lbs of boost. That's 6lbs less boost than the Redsport and the Z comes with stock. And my car hits 400wtq at 3800rpm. Similarly modded supras put down around 380whp and even less tq. Expect to see Zs putting 430-440whp and 500 tq with an exhaust, downpipes, E15 and tune. That would beat a similarly modded supra.
The B58 doesn't really have the nod until you get into the true aftermarket. Once you get into Bigger turbos, full Bolt-ons, Fuel pumps, injectors,, etc. Then the aftermarket of the b58 takes the cake easily. But if my 4000lb q60 coupe can beat them, the lighter Z will be able to as well, so long as we are keeping things mildly modded. But once the Japanese aftermarket explodes with the Z, we will see these cars being pit against each other at the highest level. I'm just blessed to be a car guy, and I love all cars and makes. And so long as there is competition, the consumer always wins.
The true problem is it’s 5 year’s overdue. Just imagine how bad the new Supra would have looked if the Z was already on the market?
That's not really a problem. I'm willing to wager that enthusiasts have a higher appetite for a car like this in light of the upcoming environmental dictatorship. Five years ago, people didn't yet realize what they have and what they'll lose. So it looks like it's a good time to release this car.
@@andycalifornia426Cool story bro. Lmao. Imagine if, like most cars, the 370z ran for 6 years instead of 13…and the Z we are currently getting is at the end of it’s life cycle…what would be the logical next step? Probably something even better. Bet on that.
“The Supra isn’t selling all that well”. Literally thousands of people asking for a manual. Also Toyota, let’s put a few bits of carbon on it.
The z33 platform was never a bad platform it was just let down by its engine. I wish Nissan would double down on some more of their legacy sport cars or even sport compacts. I don't think it would be very hard to create a new pulsar using the juke platform. Having a new Silvia would be great too but is more of a stretch considering they have even less of that in their parts warehouse.

Like I said before, Toyota could easily just use the RC platform for the Supra and that could've been a great way to make a reference from the A80 Supra. Since both the Supra A80 and SC300 shared the same platform and engine. Basically Nissan did something great that Toyota could've easily done in the first place, but they didn't cause their lazy to develop their time into their Sport Cars and instead time into their Trucks and SUV.
Then it wouldnt have been an inline 6, Toyota could have built a "3jz" but then theyre wasting money competing with BMWs inline 6 which fits the bill perfect
@@bryankc9644 I agree that Toyota had enough money to create a brand new Inline-6 Engine, but V6 Engines tend to be much more reliable, produce more HP and produce much more torque as well compared to an Inline-6. I can understand Supra fans might not love the V6 engine in the new Supra, but you have to remember the Skyline and Z were inline 6 Sport Cars and now their powerful and amazing V6 Sports Cars. Too bad Toyota didn't see that and just went to develop their once Reliable Sport Car into another Lazy Rebrand Sport Car just like their 86 and possibly the future MR2.
@@lil_kitty4081 Your entire first statement is completely wrong. The inline-6 is the far superior design choice in regard to balance, efficiency, power, simplicity, reliability, etc. The only reason the V6 is utilized at all in modern cars comes down to packaging reasons. It's a whole lot easier to fit a v6 under the hood than it is an inline-6. There's a reason almost every heavy duty diesel is an inline-6 turbo.
@@EnthusiastlistHow is i6 superior to v6 when the most powerful racecar in the world like F1 and LMP1 car uses v6?
@@nonameyet2205 because v6 are smaller, cheaper due to availability, and they're easier to fit... they would have to change the size and standards for F1 to accommodate inline 6. The Ascendency guy is 100% spot on
Shouldve been named the 400Z!!!
It is a good name, just didn't make sense for the whole "it's gotta be the displacement" stuff
It’s not an Apple iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy. Js, we don’t need to keep making the number bigger.
@@RadDadisRad That is completely true. But just for the heritage of the car, I feel. Like a nod to the past. From the 240Z-260Z and forward thereafter.
@@ThatDudeinBlue for this reason alone, historically I vote no for 400z
The new Z and the Supra are both incredible platforms. The B58 matted to the ZF8 was a recipe for success. I just wish Toyota did it themselves and offered a manual too. BMW went from good/okay turbo I6's to godly ones with the new B58 and S58. It's gonna be fun to see AMS go nuts on the new Z I cant wait.
First, you made me feel old making the NFS Underground reference...
I started out bashing the new Z because I thought they cheated by using the 370Z Chassis, however I'll admit that the more I learn about what they did with the Z, and after seeing it in person at the Cars and Coffee (Nashville); it is exactly what the Japanese segment needed.
Personally i think they called it the "Z" because they dont plan on having another generation. If they did, i have no idea wtf they would call it
i think that to
The ZX
They called it the Z because it shares characteristics of all previous Z models.
It’s a mix between 300zx, 240z, 280z, 350/70z e
Hey David, come check out my 300ZX TT already 😋. We’ll go racin with Ryan Scott down the road
nice :D
It’s stock, no
@@Illness.og. looks can be deceiving. Stock engine, yes, but there are a few little hidden goodies 😉. Mildly modded, and admittedly it does need more, but still… not stock 😁
@@woodnutz78 still, slow and just average. Not being mean, but I don’t think he’d just review a plain car that’s mildly modded.
@@Illness.og. you’re probably right, but I don’t know too many people that would call a Z32 “plain.” I get what you’re saying, performance-wise, but when it’s a car that is very rarely seen (at least ‘round these parts), it does get some attention… especially being in as good shape as it is. Hey, the guesstimated 340-350ish whp is plenty enough fun for me… for now 😉. E85 is a long-term plan… that’ll be about the max I go for.
My first thought was: will you always try to finds something negative about basically everything?
lol
lol, I love that shoutout to one of my favorite games as a kid. I dont think I would have gotten so into cars and things without NfS Underground.
Nissan started to realize that Z brand and it's enthusiasts who gonna save the company as they lately failed to deliver what customers expect from them.
Mmm more like Ghosn was more interested in driving up sales rather than deliver compelling products, he is the reason why
the Z was not approved for a redesign in 2017 and when Mr GTR had to create a skunk works project of the new Z.
Im still not over the FT1
The Z was my saving grace, I was one month away from buying a Honda CBR600RR motorbike, but when I saw a sportscar that was literally perfect for my needs and environment, it pulled on my heartstrings stronger than my wish of riding a bike from ever since I was 9. The Nissan Z will be my first and only car, it's all I need and all I ever wanted
I've never thought about owning a Nissan but that yellow Z is tempting .
David, I would love to hear your opinions on the new WRX.
Man, first off, it kills me that you reminded me a lot of people driving now didn't even know Need For Speed Underground existed. Secondly, the Z car is definitely a revival. It feels reminiscent of the 90's when I was actually a kid. Competition is good for the market and development. The only possible company that's capable of stealing Nissan's thunder in terms of new production cars are either the new Integra, assuming the Type S variant is as good as the Type R OR... Mitsubishi returning with either the Eclipse, Evolution, or 3000GT remake. Either way the Z looks fantastic and definitely on my list of cars I need to buy in the next 2 years.
If Mazda whips out the RX-9, they'll 100% steal the hype.
I doubt it would be rotary though
@@TeamLouieTv mazda has stated several times they havent abandoned the idea of another rotary
i had a 90 nissan 300zx,loved the thing....sucks to work on though a bit.
if an evo 11 happened it could steal the thunder from everyone but that is never happening.
I wanna take a quick second to thank todays sponsor... 4minutes later or a 1/4 of the whole video LOL
I think the major issue with the sports car industry is basic cost and the dealer mark ups. But with the rarity of the 90s sports cars it might make a turn around
First off, im all about going fast but if you get a ticket, own it. Second I love the Z and will get a blue one with a manual transmission.
I've owned 3 cars in my life: S14, G35 Cpe and now a G37 Cpe. Thank you Nissan for not abandoning me.
Dealer mark-ups (theives and wreckers/price gougers) make sales difficult. People know how much a car is worth and plenty don't want to spend thousands more than price.
I like the rear fascia on this Z...... but the front. It actually looks like they left the handle off the pizza oven door. Is this really the best they could muster?
I honestly would love to own the Z someday because of the story behind it. And I'm at an age where I've seen the whole process so to own it would be special
The biggest problem with the development crew in any vehicle manufacturing is that they make what they think we will like instead of actually taking their toes and dipping it into the car community and seeing what they actually want, what they expect, so on and so forth.
The power to weight to price ratios for the Z is incredible.
How to restart classic auto brands:
YOU GET A BILLION!
YOU GET A BILLION!
YOU GET A BILLION!
ALL OF YOU GET A BILLION!
Oh, and here's a group of talented managers and engineers who actually like sports cars.
OOOOHHHH BOYYY I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS TAKE!
V6 Twin Turbo, Akebono Brakes, Mechanical Diff, Manual Transmission. LOL! Winning.
I had a 240z and sold it for a ring and a down payment for a house. she has them both now, let this be a lesson. please guys, create a trust before and after and keep it up dated!
Super excited with this direction for nissan maybe I'll be able to afford it one day but for now I'm enjoying my 06 g35
Did anyone see that Beaverton Nissan's website says this: The 2022 Nissan 400Z is rumored to be priced at a starting MSRP of $34,995 and has a sleek and modern style. The vehicle weighs around 3,252 pounds and provides a horsepower of 444 hp. It offers a six-speed manual transmission with the talks of an automatic transmission on the rise.
Best thing that happened (mr.gtr), who is an older individual, helped and contributed to that beautiful ,subtle , hopefully fast 6mt nissan 😍 I just hope I can review and buy this car . I got one take on Nissan though , LSD not standard on all models ??!! And I hope that companies start making drift cars option (i.e equipped with a hydro brake and lsd ) this would be a nice touch for enthusiasts.
I praise what Nissan has done with the new Z. Total correct move to keep same platform, but replace the engine and the transmission with modern tech and rework the sheet metal. The end result is amazing looking car... Especially if it will come in at around $35k starting.
One big problem.
It's not being released in the UK or Europe.
The 370 was a decent upgrade from the 350, I had g35 then g37, amazing, reliable cars
