Matt, great article! However there isn’t a comparison to the supra in this article. Perhaps you and Zack could make a head to head comparison some time this summer between the two?
Put this on a road course against a Cayman or a 1LE. What Kool aid you been slurping down Matt😅 just watched the supra beat that Z by a bus length on Camissa's review😂
In fairness, Toyota and Subaru proved that handily. The 86 sold far more manual than auto and cheaper than a Z (in either era). It quickly became a generic staple of the enthusiast scene, it’s a huge success. Nissan is mostly continuing to do what they’ve always done. Make small improvements on their basic platform and deliver a driver’s car that performs well. It’s a pretty steady progression. And despite the lack of fanfare they’ve been one of the best in this area for a long time.
@@silaszebedee9331 What? Those two cars are nowhere near each other in terms of class, handling dynamics, or any other measurable metric. You're comparing apples to hotdogs.
Looks great but base car should've come with an LSD considering every GR86 has one... 400hp too much not to. Or at least make it A $1-2k option separate from the $10k performance package
Yep I was thinking the same. Should have made a technology pack and performance pack. Technology gives you power seats, bigger screen etc and the performance gives you bigger brakes, lsd, bigger wheels/ tires and spoiler.
The reason they didn't is because the new z has a lsd with clutch packs which is different from the old lsd and more expensive. The price of that included would put it at the supra starting price. I think they should of included it for a 45k package but I bet they wanted to say on paper that it starts cheaper than the supra.
The difference is that this car isn’t comparable to a gr86 it’s more of a Supra competitor and with a cheaper msrp than a base 2.0l 4 cylinder supra and you still get that 400 horse VR engine that is on the even more expensive q60 and q50 rs also very similar to the gtr engine

The most direct competitor to this car in every aspect is the Supra, not the BRZ, or the Mustang. Pretty weird not to mention it, but I guess that Matt just blanked on it.
@@hot0527 So they're both two-seat Japanese coupes, with 3 litre turbo engines and roughly the same power, but they don't compete with each other...Right, makes sense.
The price bump for the trim levels seems heavy considering what you get. The only real performance upgrade that you would not replace anyway is the rear diff. MAYBE the brakes if you don't track much but I would expect folks who are tracking more than a couple times a year would probably do larger brakes than anything available anyway. 10k goes pretty far in the aftermarket if you are a DIY enthusiast. It's almost like they talked to the HPDE guys and they said "All we need the big motor, and a manual trans, and that diff you guys use sucks" during some early design group session. Then they changed to a clutch type LSD without re-visiting that decision.
@@pattisonvidal3909 Tires are the FIRST upgrade anyone who is going to do upgrades will change. How much more are the tires than what comes on the sport I wonder? That's the thing, the package is priced like the car doesn't come with those parts AT ALL.
Turbo speed sensors also helps prevent overspeeding the turbo which is especially important at altitude and the pressure ratio across the compressor increases
Markups and demand. Even Mitsubishi Mirages were selling thousands over their base price, some over 18k, for a car that a lot of people bought for 11k brand fuckin new, which MSRPs around 14. The 86 is ostensibly affordable but you’ve got dealer selling them at 40 and over. There’s apparently not a lot of manufacturers willing to demand that their dealers cut the shit and stop doing markups. I think a few years down the line, this car will sell closer to the intended price.
Even as a domestic guy, I love this car. I think it's the best looking 2 seater to hit the market in a long time. I also like that it's obtainable for those in the middle class. If I had the money it would be very hard for me to choose between this and the Camaro

@@user-pn3im5sm7k No shame in that, I love my Corvette but the new Z is awesome. I even looked at Z32s before I bought my Vette. Never was a 350/370 fan and owned a Mustang back then. Sports cars are about emotion and if you find one that works for you then go for it.
no offense but i think japanese sports cars are better at keeping their value. also, im a fan of japanese sports cars so buying the Z is a no brainer for me. imo american muscle cars are dead bc they will discontinue V8 engines.
@@badboy-gn8fu You realize that American V8 cars have been subsidized by their 4 and 6 cylinder version for decades already? If Ford didn't sell 5 4 cylinder cars for every V8 there wouldn't even be a Mustang at all. Even without the V8 they will still sell Mustangs. Charger/Challenger is about to switch to a 3 liter inline 6 turbo engine to replace the 5.7 HEMI V8. Things are changing for the worse but the party isn't over yet. If only people would open their eyes and realize all the green washing is BS that would be nice.
As someone who fell in love with the GR Yaris, I am so damn curious where the new Corolla is going to land. Imagine if Subaru and Mitsubishi chimed in, 1990's all over again!!
This video just made my day happier knowing that the real sports car formula is still alive through this masterpiece of a car. It is really the first time I'm watching a video of you driving that urges me to drive the same car as well RIGHT NOW, the 400Z is just everything a true driver, a true enthusiast seeks, and I'm happy it delivers it.
I had a 370z and loved it despite some of the gripes I had about it. I was thinking about waiting for the 400z but was afraid it was gonna be too much like the 370z since it used the same platform. From what I’m hearing though it seems like a great car. Maybe I revisit it in a few years cuz I bought something else.
As a Porsche guy I gotta admit I really like this car, can’t wait to see what nismo does with it down the road. Tuner will have a field day with the new TT engine. Great review as always Matt!

i try and keep the price down as much as i could but i’d REALLY want the LSD. $50k for a Z seems like way too much unless it’s a NISMO. that would prob be $55k+
I agree. Base should have been the 300hp version since it has no LSD. That could have started at 35k. Then a 10k jump for the 400hp version with bigger brakes, LSD, etc would make sense at 45k. At 50k, it is too close to the Supra price and has already been proven slower.
eh i disagree that there should be engine options . a brand new car in 2023 with an NA engine is unheard of , even toyota is going with forced induction these days . the old Z used to start around $32, $33k . pricing this high brings it out of its target market imo . i mean really who the hell has $50k to blow on a mid-spec nissan Z car? is $50k becoming the new normal for 'cool' cars in the world?? then when its killed off they'll wonder why it hasnt sold well (just guessing). in either case i could not swallow a $500 to $600 lease payment for a 'Z' car. the Z went from affordable to not . disappointing and im personally not sold on the front end either . i want to love it but DAMN YOU NISSAN!!! It’s interesting how much variance I’ve seen with the clutch/shifter situation. Some people like Doug think the clutch is springy and the shifter isn’t precise and some people like you seem to enjoy both. That just shows how things like that are personal preference and no matter how many reviews you watch you won’t know until you drive one yourself.
Same - I had a 1990 300zx Twin Turbo back in the mid-90's, but have never driven the 350Z/370Z. I feel both being twin-turbo V6 and roughly the same weight and size, it could be similar. Though the new Z is actually 200lbs less in weight and with another 100hp and with modern rubber - so theoretically if they didn't mute the road feel, should be better.
Nice this was the video I was waiting for. Seems like a good value here and I bet that engine has some real potential for power with aftermarket upgrades. I think I like the rear of this car a bit more than I like the front, but overall it looks pretty good.
Nissan rep was like "I need you to make the exterior shots of the car look like it's going SUPER FAST" Matt "I got chu fam" (10:49 and some others lol)
Nice video, and we appreciate your insight into this car. It is journalists like you that help to determine if a car should be considered. I love everything I've heard about this car so far; a big enough engine with twin turbo; your choice of transmissions; RWD. Its fast and capable and has the right architecture to be anything you wish it to be. So its a tuner's dream to go as wild as they want, or just leave it stock with maybe just a remap and watch it get even better. You've seen what Motive Way has already done, and AMS has got this car doing mid 10s on the 1/4 mile with just mild bolt-on parts and and a remap. So why do people keep comparing this car to a GR86 or BRZ when they are not even in the same category? Not even close.
nissan got the Z Performance pricing TOTALLY WRONG! They try to come close to the 6-pot Supra JUST in pricing. I think the BASE will be a better buy but still, it's a stripped to a price point model. Why DO all manufacturers overprice their TOP trim so much?
I dunno, the more reviews I see the more it just seems like a 370z refresh with an updated engine. It’s way too expensive in Australia with only the top trim being available. Starts at 80k! I’d rather spend a bit more on the Supra and get a far nicer build quality.
I put a 1k deposit down a few months ago. Got told yesterday pricing is just under 85k aud drive away. It pains me to say but it just feels too much for what you're getting. For 85k I could get a mint M2 or RS3 and pick one of these up in a few years for a lot less. Currently have a m135i lci and it's outstanding.

Thank you for not saying so many bad things about a car. There are good qualities too about the z. Depends on your usability and what you're using it for but like you said for AG. T car, some people don't need a lot of horsepower for everyday driving car. It's practical if it was someone to get a 1000 horsepower, that's the wrong car. All depends on what you're using it for and in reality, we don't all live in a freaking desert where nobody lives and it's easy to drive, but again, sensibility, where everyone could drive and nowadays. Unfortunately, the dollar doesn't go the way it used to. But AG t car is what it is and that's what we want, some of us do. I'm always a big fan. Yes, they have the mixture of old and new, but that's not always a bad thing too. It's a good car, but there's other websites out there. Sometimes they just bash everything and say negative things, everything has a prone to con it all depends on what you're looking for but I think this guy is knowledgeable. Matt about his cars. Some people have UA-cam channels that just read 2 cards. All depends, so does Jay Leno, he thinks it's a good car that's someone I could respect he's a mechanic, an engineer by trade. Thanks for the information I like to get one. Yes, I could drive a stick, but sometimes, you may not always want to be in the mood to drive a stick, some people are lazy not saying that's bad thing, but sometimes getting old by driving a stick in the city is not. It was a good thing, but all depends on your preference and looking down to people just 'cause they don't want driver steak. Is dumb but 6 are good things for cars all depends on your use.
Matt, how was the 1-2 gear change below 4k rpm? Did they finally revise those synchros. The Z33/34 linkage is so clunky on the 1-2 change if you aren’t giving it enough throttle.
@@nathanchildress5596 the shifter will always vibrate as the shift rod is directly connected to the transmission, so all the vibrations come through. That also allows the shift feel to be “direct” and not rubbery.
@@n9athan I love the bolt action feeling of the JK4X gearboxes. I have mine with a slightly shorter shifter and it’s great. The only thing I gripe about is that if you don’t load up the throttle before shifting out of first you get a loud clack sound/feel. All 350/370/G37/G35 have had this issue. Shifting at 75% throttle at 4k+ rpm is the solution. I noticed it also has to do with the yaw of the car - I’ve heard it was primarily noisey due to the linkage design.
Heat is going to be the primary issue with this engine when going for 200+ extra horse power. My buddy has a 600whp q50 and it gets extremely hot even with his aftermarket coolers. Although that's when Ethanol is required. And I mean 600whp is still insane.

With Nissan in financial straights thanks to the previous scandal with their former CEO, we're lucky we even get a new Z, let alone one that's this competent. No one should be complaining about the lack of a differential. The Z is a platform that was designed with the anticipation that future owners will upgrade/customize the car to their liking. With a simple flash tune, this car can already beat a stock Supra. While the Toyota has better specs from the factory, (given most owners are likely to modify either car), it's really up to the way each individual builds out their car, and being that the Z is 100% manufactured/designed by Nissan, they do get more street cred with their target audience for making the car completely on their own. Long live the Z! #nismo #fairlady #z35 #jdm
Agree, they could have updated the interior look, LOTS of 370z look and feel. But they did good, probably didn't want to spend too much R&D on the interior.
It’s a beautiful thing in 2022 for an OEM to NOT just cram new tech down your throat. I like that the new Z is composed of tested, reliable running gear for the most part. Interior is nice, nothing crazy like the MK8 VW. With a tune, these are gonna be serious weapons.

Matt likes the shifter and clutch, whereas Doug D. specifically called those items out as being mediocre. Were the cars built differently or is feel on those items entirely subjective?
Matt you are by far one of the best reviewers out there.. you live cars.. while most of the other "reviewers" out there saying oh its not like the old one.. or it should have been this or that.. you actually go out review the car and that's it.. great job as always
I have to say the review feels way too lenient. Matt claims to address the Supra by pointing us to his article but it's only mentioned once how it's a BMW and there is no comparison. Let's just look at the fact that for being literally the same price for a similar spec (LSD etc) you're getting less performance than the Supra. I know this part is out of his control but I don't feel like we get to see the car at the limit in any of the journalist desert driving vids. With the Supra we got to see plenty of oversteer on a tight & technical track at Summit Point VA. I'm not a BMW Supra fan boy and I'm happy the Z is real but I can't help but feel nobody wants to be real honest with this car.
Surprised the automatic is showing it be on the slushy side , makes me wonder if it’s not the final revision of the transmission tune. Still the manual is obviously the go too pick for most shoppers I feel, thanks for the Review Matt look forward to you getting it back on your home turf.
5:24 - Hey...that's not an EZRI...lol The real competitor is going to be the Bupra, especially now that they're going to (finally) offer it with a proper 3 pedals.
Supra is faster lighter and more expensive. Feels more refined where the z has a touchier feel. Supra is the better car but it still cost more. So the supra is more serious where the Z is more playful. I personally was so excited for the Z but for 49k for the good package I'd take a mustang GT or pay a little more for the Supra. Base model imo is the one to buy if you want to start modifying and if you're looking at 40k cars get that over the 2.0 supra... or spend the 30k on a brz and it'll be more fun for 10k less. But if you're looking at 50k cars the performance Z isn't the car you should get (imo)

The Supra or the new M240i is way more car at around $50k. I’m disappointed this car is in the same price range as those two considering B58 >>>>>> VR30
Considering they saved a bunch of R&D money not developing a whole new platform, using an old engine, and borrowing a transmission, I have no idea why this thing is as expensive as it is.
This and the new GR Corolla look great, I'm curious if they'll do a Nismo version of the car too. They nailed the styling in my opinion, the perfect amount of old and new
Just casually compares it to a Porsche 😋 The Camaro is a bit old? Put that Z on a road course and it will fall flat on its face. Center of gravity is still way too high and wheel base too short. Weight distribution and just weight to power isn't even in the same league as other cars. That hard plastic center console looks like fisher price in a 50k car?? Door style is like from 2003. No heads up display. Yeah go ahead and dismiss as SS or a 1LE. It's overpriced and you are gonna need alot of nismo stabilizers and suspension work to even hope to compete with a Porsche. What Kool aid did you drink on that day😂
I would like to hear a more in depth comparison between the Supra and the Z. Great video but I believe I am still going to go with the Cayman for my next car
I think the defining element of a sports car is: Would you take it to a hillclimb? And, would it need to be modified for you to come back and do it again.
Then the defining element would be: how fast are you trying to complete the hillclimb? Dedicated hillclimb cars are 100-150k dollars more expensive than a brand new, production, STREET car. If you’re trying to judge street cars by whether they can hang with hillclimb monsters then that’s just setting yourself up for disappointment. Not that my opinion means anything, just seems strange to have such a massive expectation for what is ultimately intended to spend its life averaging 50mph, sports car or otherwise. But if you’re just talking about going to a hillclimb to have a little fun and not break records, then never mind lol.
So glad to hear you can feel the tires in the steering because this is almost entirely lost when going electric assist PS in most cars as oppose to the more natural feel of hydraulic.
Open deck Vr30 < B58 Merc 9 speed < ZF8 (will be same with manual versions) Nissan suspension tuning < Toyota suspension tuning Nissan interior < bmw interior (determining factors being quality of materials used and overall ergonomics of the design) I love that there’s other companies out here still making manual sports cars but Nissan completely missed the mark in my opinion.

If you're gonna mod, the base is for you, if you keep your cars stock, the performance is for you.
Pretty horrible you don't even get the Akebonos with the sport anymore. I can only imagine what else they're gonna try to justify.

Great car, shame MSRP is a myth but so are many other cars.
Don’t buy over msrp. If you can’t get it at msrp then pass.
Even as a domestic guy, I love this car. I think it's the best looking 2 seater to hit the market in a long time. I also like that it's obtainable for those in the middle class. If I had the money it would be very hard for me to choose between this and the Camaro

Get the base and slap an LSD in it, then
I'm not a BMW Supra fan boy and I'm happy the Z is real but I can't help but feel nobody wants to be real honest with this car.
Savagegeese took it out on the track and loved it
How can you say there’s less performance without driving both?
I had 240sx> sentra ser spec v>350z>370z and now a BMW m6 f13 😄
Surprised the automatic is showing it be on the slushy side , makes me wonder if it’s not the final revision of the transmission tune.
Still the manual is obviously the go too pick for most shoppers I feel, thanks for the Review Matt look forward to you getting it back on your home turf.
5:24 - Hey...that's not an EZRI...lol
The real competitor is going to be the Bupra, especially now that they're going to (finally) offer it with a proper 3 pedals.
what about the supra comparison? seems like its main competitor
They have ALWAYS been competitors. Every generation, it is really strange he didn't mention the Supra. 🤷♂️
@@darrin3088 have you driven all these cars?
I cannot wait for mine. I should have mine fairly early in the release. I will take it to the track almost immediately, and will be posting the videos on my UA-cam channel. I also drive a track prepped R35, and have the fastest AWD laps at Thompson Speedway and Palmer Motorsports Park. Follow to see my videos!
At 40k yes, at 50k they totally missed the mark. It is too hard plasticy and econo on the inside to touch that price point.
At 35-40k, home run. You're right.
Agreed. The Performance model should have been $45k. Would have sold like hotcakes. Or at least offer an LSD as a $1,500 option in the base.
They nailed the styling in my opinion, the perfect amount of old and new
Go work for Nissan and see if you like them. BTW the corolla gr is awesome and toyota knows the future for sure. 300hp on a open block is awesome
What Kool aid did you drink on that day😂
Yeah it’s 50g’s for a 370 with the rs400 engine no thank you.
👏👏
I tried to stay away from anything Z until it came out, I really like what they've done. 👍👍
Lol you nor anyone of us in the comment section wont be hill climbing any car. 95 percent of us will never hit a drag strip either.
No LSD standard on a $40k 400hp car is not good value. If you want a car to look cool then just get a used F-type.
So glad to hear you can feel the tires in the steering because this is almost entirely lost when going electric assist PS in most cars as oppose to the more natural feel of hydraulic.
Open deck Vr30 < B58
Merc 9 speed < ZF8 (will be same with manual versions)
Nissan suspension tuning < Toyota suspension tuning
Nissan interior < bmw interior (determining factors being quality of materials used and overall ergonomics of the design)
I love that there’s other companies out here still making manual sports cars but Nissan completely missed the mark in my opinion.
Why, because it isn't a BMW. GTFOH
@@NFSINSANE because it’s a cheap looking car for the price, they couldn’t get some parts from Infiniti when they’re asking for 50k+?
Price = price :D
A Matt Farah review is the review I was looking for. The definitive review, if you will. Thanks brother! You never fail to impress, inform and entertain.
