Hi everyone. Hope you all enjoy this one, sorry it took so long to do another documentary. As always, any support on Patreon is greatly appreciated, and thank you all so much for watching. You're all the best.
Nice video, although too many youtube commercials, keep it real. That outage was during my peak movie downloading days on to my PS3. My brother was laughing at me with his 360 fanboys. I did not have a credit card or any funds on my account so and I wasn't too worried about my info, I just changed all my passwords immediately after. I didn't feel too offended by this event, especially because Sony handled it mostly professionally. Xbox on the other hand burned me 3 times with the red ring, it made perfect circles destroying several of my games, low quality 360 controllers that lasted me less than 1 year, and now a crummy exclusive-less generation. It gets harder for me to forgive their mistakes. Especially with those stupid,"oops" error messages.
I remember when this happened, I was 9 and remembered saying "Ooh free games!". Didn't know that my dads credit card was in jeopardy. Now infamous is one of my favorite game series
I’m so glad that back then when I wanted anything I would use psn cards instead of debit/credit cards, if a hack like that happened now I’d lose my shit because I do have some stuff connected
I remember when this happened I never wanted to play Black Ops 1 so bad but couldn't because no PSN... Then all we got was a free indie game and a week of PS Plus lol.
@@CherryFlavoredAntAss Littlebigplanet was the 4th one in the US. Lbp was almost 3 years old, Infamous was almost 2 yeats old and already had huge price cuts, wipe out was meh, and dead nation was super short.

Imagine just getting the PS3 and discovering that you can play online with other players only to have the Network get hacked a week or so later... Yeah, that was me.
On my birthday, April 25th 2011, I got a PSP GO which was completely digital which meant I could only download games through the playstation store. Needless to say I was very upset when I found out the network was down and I couldn't get any games for it. It went back to the store 2 days later for a refund. I lost a friend because of this. I knew someone who was suicidal and I had talked her down multiple times. After the hack, I never saw her log in again and after mourning her for a long time, I kind of accepted that I'd never get closure and unfriended her account. I bought a ps3 in late July or early August of 2011 as a Sophomore in highschool. I didn't even know about this fiasco until a few months later when I made some new friends at school that played ps3 (most played xbox360). I was just excited to finally take my 2 weeks worth of pay during the summer to finally buy a ps3 that I had been wanting for years. I bought it after work walking a mile to the mall. Caught the public bus, and then walked the almost 2 miles home over a big mountain holding my ps3 slim massive box. Embarrassing? Yes. Did I care? Fuck no
I do not usually leave comments on videos but this was a truly exceptional video and I feel it deserves greater recognition. As someone who was directly impacted by this attack in 2011, I still had lingering questions about the outage. This video went above and beyond answering my questions and I found the whole video engaging and interesting. Keep up the great work!
Kutaragi was so far ahead of the ball. It is such a shame the old guard at Sony were/are so blind. He had the vision to create an iOS/Android like environment almost a decade before anyone else. The old guard were clueless about the web. This whole thing could have been avoided if they would have listened to Ken.
I used to debate furiously with my friends who were Xbox fans about which system was better. I was a PlayStation guy so when this happened I was incredibly salty lol 😂. They didn’t let me live it down for a long time. Good times!
IMPOSSIBLE... The Hackers back then could have forced a new forged FW-Update on PSPs and PS3 and it was a Mainframe-Takeover... Is it a Mainframe-Takeover in Rockstar's case?
I remember kids that didn’t understand/know that PSN was hacked were making videos raging about how they couldnt play black ops 1 online. And 360 players making fun of ps3 owners for not having online. It was an interesting time 😂
@@Bread_Bug for these xbox 360 people who were bullying ps3 users a merry fuck you Like LITERALLY there was big chance of them losing credit card number and other personal info Like as much console war there is there should be a fucking limit where u can laugh
Good documentary, took me back to when that actually happened. A shitty time for all of us PSN users. Let's just hope something like that never happens again.
something like this shouldn't have been possible in the first place, DDOS is something anybody can do with a bot network, its a wonder nobody did it earlier.
Maybe Sony shouldn’t have asked for more than they could handle asking for PayPal information? User IPs who watched his UA-cam videos? Sony wanted to be Tyrant but forgot that there are people out there that will put them in check.
I remember this being in highschool. Boored to death having to go out and socialize. It was traumatic. However it did make me play solo... And reach the highest cod zombies level I've ever had
I had an Xbox and my older brother had a PS3 in 2011. When this happened he basically took over my Xbox. So I suffered from this event even though I had an Xbox.
Sony as a company is so weak, and the fact they still have not spoke out about this speaks volumes. Rockstar immediately got the FBI involved once someone started leaking their GTA 6 footage, embarrassing.
Lol yeah that, I remember trying to play gta 5 with a friend on christmas but fucking lizard squad or whoever the fuck they are decided to ruin our fun
I remember when this happened. I was so frustrated by the lack of information about the outage that I went out and bought a PC and never looked back since. It's really cool to see this event well documented like this.
It probably says something to how rapidly the internet was growing at this time that this was such a massive deal. Back in 2008 or so it probably wouldn't be quite so big yet still a big deal. Nowadays though, something like this seems insanely unthinkable. Gaming and online are almost completely intertwined now, and thinking of something like fortnite being offline for 23 days seems insane. There would be riots.
This gave me legit chills, I remember coming back home to play cod with my dad and my school mates, we couldn't even sign in! Little did we know how long it would be down for and how many games we needed online to play. Amazing video!!
Oh yeah, I remember when that happened and I had to go to my bank immediately to cancel my debit card and get a new one because I didn't wanted these hackers to steal my money from my debit card back then. Lucky for me it didn't happen, and lucky for Sony I don't care for online gaming, so I stuck with my PS3 and my single player games.
I remember when I got hacked. They took my dads debit card number and purchases so my dad had to take a new debit card... He also lost money from hackers coming and stealing my account they also removed my password so I couldn’t access it for 8 years... I got it back with only 1 Game. And that was Slender. Edit: I also forgot to say that I got Terraria back as well.
sad to tell you this but they tried attacking the Microsoft servers but with the xbox live being paid for it was really hard for them to heck they even attacked the Wii servers
I was only 8 at the time, and I'm pretty sure I got my PS3 a couple weeks after all this had settled down, but even I vaguely remember hearing about this while my family watched the news. Never knew PSN was down for so long though, I think I always imagined in my mind that it was closer to a week. Very interesting to learn about.

ESPECIALLY if you decide its a great idea to piss off all the hackers on your network by removing the ability to run linux then going after anyone who trys to enable that feature again xD
"Sony isn‘t fully responsible for it". Umm yes they were? The way the hackers got in were by exploiting KNOWN vulnerabilities. This means that Sony knew about these vulnerabilities BEFORE the hacker exploited them. Why didn't Sony patch these issues in the first place?
Just a thought, but it seems to me that the PS3-Vita era (About years: 2006-2012) were PlayStation's darkest years. PS3 having a rough start, Vita failed in sales, and the PSN Hack.

Yes. Did I care? Fuck no

Kutaragi was so far ahead of the ball. It is such a shame the old guard at Sony were/are so blind. He had the vision to create an iOS/Android like environment almost a decade before anyone else.
