These consoles were so much ahead of their time...the games those could play at a quality not even played in many modern machines. The power of optimization and custom hardware. The INSANELY good graphics those could handle smoothly..unbelievable.
You know what I find sad? My Atari 2600 is going on 40 years and barring any technical problems, it will still play all the games ever released for it and do all the things it did on the day I got it. Yet in another 10-20 years or so, once support for the PS3 has been discontinued, it will be in much worse shape. Say you want to replay one of your favorite games, so you buy a PS3 and a copy of the game. Oops, the whole game isn't on the disc, you're supposed to go online and download the missing parts, but the PS3 is no longer compatible with the latest version of the PSN and even if it was, that game wouldn't be there any more. Ok, let's try another game that comes entirely on the disc. Hmm, why is it glitching? Oh right, that was fixed in a patch that could only be obtained online. OK, this game is the fully patched version. Hey, where's that other game mode that I used to enjoy playing? Oh, I forgot that was DLC that's no longer available and even if I had a backup of it, I wouldn't be able to restore it to this new console... Now game companies want to make entire game libraries download-only, and subject to the same planned obsolescence. And this is considered progress,,,
Can you please elaborate on that? Is there an official way to download and archive the patches on a computer, or are you referring to piracy and/or something fans have done? Can the same be done for DLC?
OK, thanks. To be honest, I really don't know much about the PS3. I was given one, but haven't really used it. All I have for it are FPS games and I can't get anywhere in them without a mouse and keyboard. I was going to buy a copy of Burnout Paradise until I discovered that there was no retail copy that included all the content. I don't know if the DLC for it is still available. I don't even know if it costs money to access Sony's Playstation network to be able to pay for the DLC in the first place.
This video was amazing. The ps3 was and still is the best game system ever made in my opinion. It only came out in 2006 but i got extremely nostalgic when you went through the first firmware up to the latest. Long live ps3👍🏻
I dont, even though i switched to ps3 full time in 2009, my best gaming moments of all time were on the xbox360 in late 2007 and early 2008 with halo3, gears of war 1, cod4, gtaiv, aegis wing, f.e.a.r, phantasy star online etc, i ended up switching over because of the rrod, and then my new journey in early 09 began, even those times were the best in gaming for me, my mp3 music on ps3, 6 player video chats with photo sharing, uncharted 2, gtaiv etc good times:)

I haven't had much exposure to the PlayStation ecosystem, but I have to admit, I like how consistent Sony is with their XMB design. It annoys me that there are several major, drastically different versions of the Xbox 360 dashboards, each of which look like entirely separate consoles to the original blade dashboard. XMB did have changes, but at least it is still recognizably PlayStation. Even the PS4's XMB looks closer to the PS3's first firmware than the 360 or One does to the 360's first firmware
Back in the day I used to love messing with the "Other OS" feature which allows running desktop operating systems. I ran Ubuntu and other distros. YDL anyone? Unfortunately as we know there were limitations, (RAM, framebuffer rendering, PPC arch) but it was still cool running a full desktop interface on a console. Later updates (PS3 slim era) canned the feature. RIP. (PS4 never had any cool stuff like that, mods and hacks are required to run Linux.)

Dang, what a flash back! Such a shame the PS4 never supported local media storage. And I had NO idea that the PS3 had a VIDEO EDITOR and supported printers...LOL
The of the biggest differences between the firmware that no one talks about is the memory consumption, during the start PS3 used 120Mb of RAM for the OS and over the first couple of years Sony got it down to 50Mb and gave developers an extra 70Mb of memory to use for games.
I absolutely love the PS3, almost as much as my PS4 Pro. I’ve been collecting PS3’s and now own 3 launch day models in like new condition, and a few limited editions, too.
I don't think many people know but the sparkles on the XMB actually move with the throws of your sixaxis controller. And also that the XMB changes colour (darker-lighter) depending on the time of day.
Wow trophy support wasn’t added till two years later after the PS3’s launch and a month after the best and greatest PS3 game of all time Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots came out
XMB on the PSP is beautiful too, specially on the PSP Go when you slide the lid it shows a clock and pressing shoulder buttons gives waves and pressing both of them at the same time will give calendar, pressing each shoulder button on calendar scrolls through months...
For a black XMB, you can set your colour to dark blue, then head over to the wallpaper brightness settings and yank it down low. That gets you as close as possible.
I really miss the multimedia features as well. Used to have a server set up in my house that the PS3 could stream directly from with all of my movies ripped to it.
Ps4 went backwards by not allowing external hard drives to be read. Unlike ps3 where I could connect a hard drive full of torrents movies and watch them on the system

Man, what a trip back in time all this is. I forgot all of this happened until now. Got my PS3 in 2010, PS4 in 2015.
I miss the days when internet wasn’t required to unlock trophy’s and view them.
It isnt
Thats needed to sync to the network

physical disc & Cartridges RULES!
These consoles were so much ahead of their time...the games those could play at a quality not even played in many modern machines. The power of optimization and custom hardware. The INSANELY good graphics those could handle smoothly..unbelievable.
I own that same bundle (complete in box), and still buy PS1-PS3 games from the PS Store; they’re super cheap, now.
I still use my Ps3 slim as a media hub. No need or desire to upgrade.
And this is considered progress,,,
However you can download all the updates games patches from computer and install it from USB to PS3 harddrived. Not a problem.
Can you please elaborate on that? Is there an official way to download and archive the patches on a computer, or are you referring to piracy and/or something fans have done? Can the same be done for DLC?
lurkerrekrul
Sorry I haven’t explained it properly. Yes aslong the ps3 is on custom firmware and you can do it. Yes same for DLC
Even if the PS3 dies, I can still play on my ps2
As a cat person I approve of your cat posts. also...... LONG LIVE THE PS3!!!!
I still play Modern Warfare 3 on my PS3 regularly... Spec Ops, survival mode

This video was amazing. The ps3 was and still is the best game system ever made in my opinion. It only came out in 2006 but i got extremely nostalgic when you went through the first firmware up to the latest. Long live ps3👍🏻

The voice chainger...
That brings back memories .
my ears are still ringing to this day...
Man this bring back some memories I actually remember getting my PS3 right at the 2.00 update in the late days of 2007
You should definitely do a video like this with the updates of Xbox 360
Xbox 360 actually just got updated
Yeah it did
PlayStation will always be on top, I srsly regret buying the Xbox.
@Michael Kevin Millet I agree, ps4 is dogshit, the worst playstation tech to get released by Sony, i skipped this whole generation because of it
@@GameStationTrey I mean, after the PS4 I just dropped consoles forever. Pc's are far too good nowadays and consoles can't keep up with them anymore. I mean, the Xbox One and the PS4 were considered outdated the day they came out.
@@viniqf All these current consoles need is great games, and im not talking about franchises that are decades old, im talking about NEW games we've never seen before, and on top of that have a USER FRIENDLY interface, an interface with features that make the console feel like MY console, Sony made a big mistake stripping features with PS4 and thats why i backed out this gen, i tried xb1 but that didnt work out to well for me, it wouldnt let me play quantum break for some reason so i sold it..
Anyway, im going to wait for ps5 and xbox290 480 or whatever to come out and if theres no hope im switching to PC for good.
GameStationTrey the new xbox is apparently gonna be quite a bit more powerful than the PS5 and be cheaper than a PC that can do the same unless you build one yourself and even then that won’t be cheap

The printer function was also available on the ps2, only Gran turismo 4 used it though.
This video improved my performance and stability.

I still got my ps3 connected 💪

I remember my mom borrowing My brothers ps3 to watch Netflix 😂
yeah right
I miss when you would load up a game and that "Playstation 3" text with the spiderman font would pop up and make that little jingle
You've put so much hard work and research on this video. You deserve all the love you can get bro
I still have my fat 80 gb ps3. Still play it. Kinda sucks ps4 doesnot have half the old games in ps store from ps3 era and some ps2. So im fine going back and forth. Plus i still play ps1 gameson it as well use it for my ps vita
Stark can you still buy & download games for PS3 from the PS store ?
@@hamadajsan yup. But obviously you gotta have a ps3 to go to that store. Its limited of ps3 and ps1 games but there's abunch you cannot buy on the ps4 store
I still play my launch 60gb backwards compatible model over my ps4
Cool! I’ve got a launch day 60GB model; it’s so awesome.
@@kevinragsdale6256 Take good care of that. Its very sought-after. Mine broke, and when I complained to customer services they sent me a newer model without backwards compatibility. Wish I kept it and fixed it myself
Mystic makes a video of PS4 / PS4 Pro updates too👍 I have a PS4 Pro and Smartv 4K I'm very anxious to get my PS5 at launch haha
The original PS3 is my favorite as I get to play PS1 and PS2 games as backwards compatibility
PS3 is truly still a cutting edge console...it was the only formidable foe of xbox
@Fedce it's because their still not over the shame of losing to that little white box 😉
@Fedce lol wii (my family and I) still play our most weekends. Yeah I've seen come of the Wii homebrew videos here on UA-cam.
Lol the “only” formidable foe of xbox. Just reminding you that the wii kicked their ass and sold more. Plus it has a shit ton of incredible homebrew.
Ps3 sucked I hated that console. It felt way outdated in technology.
Fedce The Wii’s price was lower , that’s why it sold more

I don't think many people know but the sparkles on the XMB actually move with the throws of your sixaxis controller. And also that the XMB changes colour (darker-lighter) depending on the time of day.
Wow trophy support wasn’t added till two years later after the PS3’s launch and a month after the best and greatest PS3 game of all time Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots came out

Sony should reboot and sale the PS3 60 GB with retro compatibility. That was the best console ever.
I still have that 60GB model. I upgraded the hard drive to 640GB (not a typo).
10 years and ps3 is still majestic
Agents of Mayhem profile picture
XMB on the PSP is beautiful too, specially on the PSP Go when you slide the lid it shows a clock and pressing shoulder buttons gives waves and pressing both of them at the same time will give calendar, pressing each shoulder button on calendar scrolls through months...
In 2007 like every month was an update
*4.85 came out and I really don’t see anything added to the PS3...*
It's like you've just discovered fire. You've woke up too late mate but yeah, good content
I have my ps3 in my room and use it as an all nighter device / streaming device. I’ve had it for about 10 years and it still holds up well.
For a black XMB, you can set your colour to dark blue, then head over to the wallpaper brightness settings and yank it down low. That gets you as close as possible.
Ps3 bo2 and fighting games bring memories
Mk9 was great
I miss that store too :
You forgot to mention the wave of death that occurred with the 2.40 update.
What was that?
I really miss the multimedia features as well. Used to have a server set up in my house that the PS3 could stream directly from with all of my movies ripped to it.
3.55 is legend
Ps4 went backwards by not allowing external hard drives to be read. Unlike ps3 where I could connect a hard drive full of torrents movies and watch them on the system
Anyone eld else really disappointed that they never developed folding at home more? I used to love the idea of my Playstation doing amazing scientific things via distributed computing
I believe it's still available on PCs
I hated the new playstation store on ps3, its so slow.
AlphaMax it’s always been slow as shit
Downloads too super slow.
@@estignatic Yup pretty much why I would rather just get the physical game lol.
Yea the only change I hated the old store run so good then they made it too fancy and slow plus sometimes it be laggy

Mod nation racers was so fun to play. Sad when the online on the game went down. So many great tracks from players
The XMB was actually really good and one of the things I miss from my 80GB fat PS3 I got Christmas of 2008. Had that thing for years until I switched to Xbox live (where my friend group was.) Still miss the PS3 and regret getting rid of it. They were awesome consoles.
At 1:39 you see that model has the 4 usb ports. Unlike the model you have has only 2 usb ports.
Good eye! That pamphlet is from the original launch PS3's marketing. Back when it had the 4 USB's, Chrome, Card readers, and PS2 Backwards Compatibility.
@@MysticRyan I know someone who could fix mine. But he doesn't have a APU. So mine is just a shiny black PS3 trophy.

so close to 5.0. they should have supported it a little longer and just gone balls to the wall with 5.0. idk what they could do to it but seriously just something off the wall lol. the ps4 as well should do something crazy for it next big .0 update.
They could have added full support for the DS4 controller. Well it works with the PS3, but only with cable (wireless mode doesnt work with 90% of the games i tried) and the playstation button doesnt work, so you still need a DS3 to exit to the xmb...
@@gabor3432 Dude, I played from 2014 till 17 with DS4 wireless on my ps3 and it always worked exactly like with cable in all the games I tried (RdR, GTA V, GTA IV, TLoU, F1 games, Pes games, Cod's, GoW games)
The only annoying missing feature that I notticed is that the PS home button does not work (but this happens with or without cables)
@@ReceitaFederal2 right, it works all the time with just about every game with a cable. I prefer it over my ds3 controllers when playing on my ps3. I do wish the home button worked also. Ratchet and clank games don't work with it for some reason and neither do any Telltale game I've played on my ps3 this year.
No one talks about the PS3 being able to rip CDs to the hard drive always thought was cool. And the 360 could do that with games i was kinda hoping Sony would allow that but I guess the games where to big
They could've done a update to let you turn hdcp off like ps4 so people can easily record games.
Old good times of free multiplayer ..
Miss the ps3 personally mostly played Siren Blood Curse since ps home went away
i played forbidden siren on ps2, that game was crazy
Got Siren on ps4 I like it but it’s harder than blood curse
