Hi I just finished my driver's side sliding door lock actuator on my 2016. Your video was very helpful Julio, thank you very much! I wanted to add something for folks to consider. While I have a replacement actuator coming from ebay sometime soon, I took apart the existing door lock actuator and removed the little electric motor and shaft that was seized. I reassembled the door actuator lock without the motor and installed it as a manual lock. Works like a charm!! I don't have remote door locks for the rear RH door - big deal. When I get out of the van and lock it, I'll have to reach back and slide the manual door lock and then shut the driver's door. No more risk of door seizing shut because a 5 cent motor from China (or worse) has failed yet again!
Putting the plastic panel back on the door, I removed the rear latch plastic mounting panel from the main door plastic mounting panel. You just pry up gently on the plastic stop on the back side and slide the 2 plastic mounting plates apart. They will never be mounted together any longer but oh well. Trying to get the metal channel up into the window track was a major hassle until I used my hand/fingers to feel into door pocket where the channel has to go. Turns out I was overshooting trying to angle the channel too far towards the rear of the van. Once I had a sense of where the channel had to go and once I had the 2 plastic mounting plates separated, it became rather easy to get the rear locking mechanism installed on the rear of the sliding door. I was able to get the 3 torques screws into the locking mechanism and one of the two 10mm bolts that go on the window channel (the bottom one). I was unable to install the bolt just under the door hinge above the locking mechanism as the holes would not line up no mater what I did. Oh well. When I do something, there is always at least 1 fail.
By the way, I was able to do this (just barely) without disconnecting the cables from the outside door handle and the front edge door latch (didn't have to touch the front edge door latch). There wasn't a lot of wiggle room with these cables connected but I was able to pull it all out and put it all back without disconnecting any of the cables (I kept the interior door handle mounted to the plastic mounting panel and the cables connected to it and to the manual door lock at the interior door handle. Your mileage may vary.
Once the new actuator arrives from ebay, I'm planning to do the passenger side as I have had the dreaded "buzz" noise on lock actuation for the past many months. Just a matter of time before the door will no longer open... I am tempted to forget about it and just do the manual lock thing too. We'll see.
By the way, I have the cheap Canada Value Package model and so there was no power window regulator and no power sliding door mechanism - yes! Much easier than what you folks with the fancy vans are dealing with!! Good luck to all of you, it is a sinking feeling to have this problem happen and realize you're about to part with $1k on a 5 cent motor.

Thank you very much for this video. I really appreciate the effort you put into this. I was able to replace the lock actuator on my 2009 Dodge Caravan following this video. Your video let me know what to do (and what not to do). The trickiest part was getting the entire assembly out because there just was barely enough room to get the window slide maneuvered out. Getting this aligned and back in place was also challenging; I was actually surprise that I was able to get everything aligned again! Overall, working slowly and patiently, with frequent references to your video was the key to not making any unrecoverable mistakes.

Thanks Julio, your video helped me tremendously. I bought the replacement part in-stock from my local Autozone. One more suggestion; do not remove the window motor or the four torx bolts in the middle of the panel which hold the window lift tracks to the door panel. You don’t want that stuff loose and flopping around while you are jiggling the panel to get it away from the door frame. The hardest task is to re-Install the window track which has to be perfectly inserted, blindly, into the door frame. It takes lots of patience and and a bit of luck to get the bolt holes to line up.
I would allow about 4 to 6 hours for a decent home mechanic to replace this actuator, however if you make dumb mistakes like removing the window tracks and motor, allow extra time. Luckily my van door broke during the time when I was off work due to the 2020 COVID virus shutdown

Great videos thank you. I did the repair today on a 2016 it took me about 6 hours. I will say I did not have to remove the cables for the door handle or front latch. There is plenty of slack in both (just remove plastic push clips) to remove the inner door panel. Once removed I just replaced the modulator and put the door back together. I will say getting the door panel removed was really challenging. Took me like 90 minutes. For me it didn't dislodge easily. Putting it back was similarly difficult. I had to use a bit of force to get the track back up the channel. Everything came out great. Thanks!

Damn! Too many people with the same problem! Including me! Shame on you Chrysler.
I asked a Chrysler dealer repair representative about a clicking noise when I move the shift knob out of park. He said it was an actuator that makes the click after a few years. He said it's normal. I told him this is bad engineering on Chrysler's part. He replied, "We just fix them. Not design them.". This is the Chrysler dealer telling me this!
Again.... SHAME ON YOU CHRYSLER FOR ALL THESE PARTS WEARING OUT TOO SOON!!!

@Julio Niño, thank you for your video, yours was the most comprehensive and concise and led me to attempt this repair. Bought an aftermarket actuator and a set of car trim tools that helped release the clips without destroying any, total cost under $40 and I'm back up and running. For some reason the other videos I found did not address how to deal with the power window so that was helpful as well. Took me most of my Saturday but you helped me save hundreds of dollars.

Thank you, Julio!!! One thing I found helpful when getting the window track lined up on reassembly was to take the two white plastic plugs out nearest the rear of the door that the molding clips into. Hope this helps someone later! On my first attempt, I didn’t have the pin that goes into the actuator arm lined up right. Third time’s the charm!

READ THIS - IF YOUR SLIDING DOOR IS STUCK AND UNABLE TO OPEN. I was unable to open driver side sliding door for months (no buzzing noise from lock mechanism on this side). The manual lock actuator for this door was stuck and could not be forced. The tip about pressing the unlock button and forcing the manual door lock at the same time worked to release the actuator!! KEEP IN MIND... This did not work when using the unlock button on the remote... I had to use the unlock button on the driver door. Now the door lock on this side works fine (like it was never broken) and I am able to open the door. Not sure how long this will last but at least I can open the door currently. Give it a try!

2017 Grand Caravan owners - this issue is covered under an EXTENDED WARRANTY! Call your dealer first to check. I found my letter from FCA after completing this repair and was pretty bummed that I did all of this myself with no method for reimbursement. If yours is not covered here are my lessons learned: Do not disconnect any of the cables or rods from the plastic door assembly itself - it will not help. Disconnecting the door handle cable from inside the door was a must along with unscrewing both the front and rear door latches. Finally and most importantly, the assembly with the lock actuator is foam taped to the inside of your C pillar! The plastic trim on the c pillar (outside rear pillar of the sliding door) must be removed. Not only does this make install a breeze, it has to be resealed anyways to prevent water intrusion into the door. I spent hours fighting this before I figured out what was going on.

When I did this repair I took the window
Motor out. I didn’t remove any of the cables because I didn’t want to mess with it as I don’t have much knowledge in that but a tip i can give when putting the window motor back in is to screw the two 10 mil bolts on the bottom to the metal windows tracks. That brings the metal tracks to the door card and then you can screw the top and the motor should line up at that point.

How did you know the door lock actuator was malfunctioning?

    • @MrJulioNino
      @MrJulioNino  3 роки тому

Several ways. One is that it won’t open at all with the fob key. Not even manually because it won’t unlock. Another way like mine, started to buzz when it would lock automatically when driving off. It would startled the kids.

@@MrJulioNino mine is doing the same things except it’s not buzzing.
I do not relish the fact of paying out the “you know what” for a dealer to replace the door lock actuator. Thanks for the insight on posting this video.
I wonder if Chrysler/Dodge has ever thought about a recall for this problem.

How do we do this if the door won’t unlock or open

    • @MrJulioNino
      @MrJulioNino  2 роки тому

You would force the lock to open. Press and hold the manual lock to unlock while pressing the fob key to unlock all doors. It took me several tries

It was easier for me to take the door off, after you lower the window and loosen the 2 nuts holding the glass window.

What’s the best way to remove the door? I feel like taking the door off will make it easier

My door will “not” open using the key fob or manually trying to manipulate the locking actuator. Has anyone found a solution to this problem and got the door to open?

    • @MrJulioNino

Looks like the actuator bit the dust. you probably don't get a buzzing or any noise when you use the key fob. When that happens the next solution is to take it apart until you reach the wire that locks it. Then manually pull on it. Let me know if that helps.

So I found that if the lock doesn’t budge pull the manual lock to open then use the fob key to open the door. Try it and let me know if it worked

I regret the purchase of our town and country more and more with every repair. Unnecessarily complicated to replace something so simple. Also, total horse shit that when it fails you can't manually lock the door. Grrr.

1-shush, you talk to much about nothing. An continue to talk about nothing relevant. 2-video of process, not talking about it. You wasted more time then you tried saving

Man you sure do make things confusing with the way you go off camera and tear it apart then return to pick up random pieces and put them in random locations and describe things that in 23 years wrenching ive never heard of such as a "ground mechanism". No offense intended and with all due respect i feel even dumber after watching your video and i really didnt think that to be possible. Im not trying to be rude only trying to offer constructive criticism so you can improve and grow in your videos or possibly find a more suitable way of wasting people's time. Thank you

This video was made mainly for those that want to save some money and for myself if I need to do it again in the future. I don"t recall saying "ground mechanism". I did say "locking mechanism" at the beginning 0:45 and as you know hearing is sometimes part of the confusion. Also in no way does this video waste people's time, we do that all on our own by choice.
Let me know if you need clarification on any part of this breakdown. Don't forget there is the second part if you need more time to waste. Have a good one Jimmy.
