Alcohol ink - 5 tips on how to do "less is more" [16]

- New alcohol ink tutorial on how to do the sometimes tricky concept "less is more". Doing a piece that is very simple and minimalistic seems like an easy thing to do.... but a lot of the time is not.
We often end up overdoing it - and if we manage to keep it very simple it can sometimes end up so simple that it's just down right boring.
(I know this from personal experience.... )
So I've made this video with 5 tips that can help you make a "less is more" piece, created with simple little details that will make it anything but boring to look at.
I've just used one color in this piece, timholz Ranger Current and piñata brass. Did this on #narapaper using 99% isopropyl alcohol.

Thank you for watching - and also thank you very much for all the nice comments and complements. I really appreciate it and it definitely inspires me to do more videos and tutorials.

My art teacher, Anni Moller, was a famous watercolor artist in Atlanta. She recommended - less is more - making it in 3s - never fear. Great advise. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome tips!
You are very welcome 🤗 I’m a BIG fan of less is more
Are you kidding? You were happy with this? It is absolutely outstanding 💓
Thank you very much 💕
My little voice mostly says, “stop now, you’re going to ruin it!” Then I’m stuck not knowing what to do from there. I’ll just start a new one and leaving first one to an abyss of unfinished work :/ I know time and experience will be the cure. That, and watching your videos :) Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome ☺️ I know the feeling
When you added the last dark part I was looking directly at that one while you did others. Like I could do it with my mind. I am so OCD and I truly love this one. Thank you
OCD… ME TOO 😂 glad you liked it
Gorgeous work & the tips are SUPER !! Thanks so much for sharing what you do ... and for how you share all the details. Inspiring to be sure. Some o' my friends are going to be very happy I came across your posts !! I recently asked a # of them to share with me their 4 favorite colors in order with the thought of doing something crafty for them -- now i have some great ways to put that info to use!
You are very very welcome 🤗
love it, Thanks, Randi! Really good advice and beautiful art.
Thank you very much 😊
“Do not listen to it” 😂 I love that ❤️, as it is so true!
Lol 😂 🤣 it is SO true
These tips are awesome. I over ink, over work and its hard to make myself walkaway from an 'unfinished' piece.
Thank you 🙏 took me a long time to learn to walk away.... I’ve gotten a lot better at it now 🤗 but I still over work it sometimes
Brilliant words of wisdom! Oh how that little voice has so much to say!! Beautiful work as always. Thank you
Thank you very much 🙏 yes that little voice talks way to much.....
Thank you for all these helpful tips! I can totally relate with everything you said!
You’re very welcome 😊
funny on tip 5 I did a piece for my friend , sent her a pic and said to her I just need to work on it some more. she was like no ,lol its great
That should be tip no 6 - “if you don’t know when to stop.... ask a friend” 👍😃👍
@@randihart5731 lol love it
Great advice. I need to follow the "less is more" mentality in all forms of art. You can easily take things too far and lose your way.
Glad you liked it. Yes, it’s tricky knowing when to stop ✋I’ve struggled with that too
So inspiring. Thank you.
You’re welcome ☺️

Great tips and hello from Dee’s Art I’m glad your on UA-cam I love alcohol ink. It’s nice to see some fresh inspiration thank you 😊
Hi 🙋♀️ thank you very much 🙏
Hello Randy, just found your channel and subbed. I tried AI a long time ago and just couldn't take the ink. But I've revisited it a week ago. I appreciate your video and tips. I have a Revlon dryer similar to yours, a air bulb and a compressor. I think I like the hairdryer may work better. Your minimalist art is very beautiful. Thanks
Thank You , so glad you like the videos 😊 I’m a big hairdryer fan, but I do like to use the bulb sometimes
@@randihart5731 Sorry I misspelled your name. ✌🇺🇦
That’s okay, happens all the time 🤣🇺🇦
Beautiful piece and wise words!
Thank you very much ❤️

You are very welcome 🙏
Thanks for these useful tips . It help a lot to se how you work , so softly. It was So satisfaying at the same time. 🥰This Work is so beautiful , I hope one day I will be able to do something like that. What kind of blower did you use?
Thank you and you’re very welcome 😊 I use a Remington hairdryer- I can’t find it anywhere anymore, but there is one from Revlon that is very similar to mine. I left a link for it in the description below this video ua-cam.com/video/auwa98Z5rRw/v-deo.html
I know other alcohol ink artist that use it. Hope it helps 🤗
Wonderful video - many thanks ❤
You’re welcome 😉
Very informative. Thank you so much
You are very welcome 😊
Just gorgeous!!!
Thank you 🙏
Great Instructions & Instructor. Can I use Canvas panel or a Regular Canvas? Thanks so much
Thank you 🙏 yes you can, but the ink won’t look the same as it does on paper… less vibrant
Lovely thank you so much
Thank you and you’re very welcome 😊
So enjoyable. Thank you very much
You’re welcome 😉
Hola Randy, se trata de un papel fotográfico. Son bellísimos tus trabajos. Quisiera probarFlicitaciones.
😀
Btw , your instruction at begging was so helpful . I am going to watch it over and over . You are a wonderful teacher besides artist .
Thank you dear 🙏🏼
Thank you very much 🙏
Gorgeous❣️❣️❣️❣️
Love your tips and tricks ! You are an excellent teacher. What type of wattage is your blower?
Thank you
Thank you so much ☺️ I believe it’s 1000
I looove this aesthetic and how well you executed it. I’m a beginner and got some Nara paper to try after seeing a few videos on it including yours… thing is I cannot make anything wispy and so clean looking on Nara paper… the same inks that have really smooth gradients on Pixiss paper seem to break and get gritty on Nara paper…
I couldn’t understand why my stuff looks so different but I’ve heard a couple of people talk about humidity … do you think living in Hawaii where it’s close to 80 degrees and 80% humidity might be effecting my inks, and even more so effecting how they show up on 100% impermeable paper?
Yes humidity can definitely mess up your alcohol ink. It can look very different and gritty and sometimes it won’t dry completely.
In Denmark we can get really high humidity sometimes in the summer and then I don’t even bother, sadly.
Hello very helpful and beautiful can I use watercolor paper and get this kind of effect
Thank you 🙏 you need a non porous surface. The paper you use for ink is sort of like plastic, so that the ink will stay on top of the paper.
You can put ink on canvas or watercolor paper but you can’t get the same effect
Do you have a video on lighting and photograph for your work?
I don’t, sorry. But I’ll put it on my “list”, so maybe one day 😀
This is a fantastic tutorial/peptalk! Your style is so elegant. I'm new to alcohol inks, so I find your tips helpful. What is your yellow-tipped pen, and what kind of paper should/do you use? Thank you so much!
Oops! I just saw your comment about supplies 🙃
👍😀😀
Hello I love your video and I’m happy to discover you ,as a beginner used two different hair dryer non of them work well for me and I don’t get soft shape and I disappointed , try to practice more alcohol ink ,can you tell me what is your hair dryer name please ? Thank you
Mine is a Remington volume and curl. Hairdryers are very tricky - I’ve made a tutorial on how to use your hairdryer to get more control over your ink. If you haven’t seen here’s a link ua-cam.com/video/aYBZilwZE6g/v-deo.html
What “paper” do you recommend? I am a beginner and I’m trying your technique but my ink dries rather than moves around when using the heat tool. I’m using Yupo paper.
If your ink dries way to fast you either have to much heat or not enough isopropyl. If you have a hairdryer with a cool air function, try that and see if it helps. In my opinion Nara is the best paper, the ink doesn’t stain the paper and you can wipe it all off completely. You can’t do that on yupo.
Nara is more expensive but you have less waist because you can reuse many times. Hope this helps 🙏
I have trouble with metallics. They seem to melt into the ink and form an overall shiny piece when I really want the strips of gold, brass, silver throughout the painting. It’s frustrating. Also, the metallics get very messy in the bottle and occasionally blow out, covering my hand, cloths, etc. I’ve watched several videos but still have trouble. Ideas?
Most metallics do that, shiny all over. The only ones I’ve found that work really well are piñata brass and molotow liquid chrome 💕 they stay on top of the ink and leave beautiful lines
@@randihart5731 thank you for your response. I do have Piniata brass. I’ll keep working on it
You’re welcome ☺️
@@randihart5731 Have you tried Ranger Alloy Gilded? Do you know if that one works well?
Hello could you tell me if you are using the cool setting or the hot please? Great Tutorial I’m playing around with AI as I’m a newbie but mine always grow and become huge puddles and then becomes so hard to manage. This was so helpful
Glad you find it helpful 😄 I use very low heat. For me, with cool air it takes way to long to dry
I love your work .
It seems you do it so easy .
I have problem with cleaning it because it leaves stain .
Any idea what I am doing wrong .
🌹🙏🏼
Thank you 🙏 you’re not doing anything wrong, it is probably the paper you’re using. I’m using Nara, and the ink does not stain the paper at all.
Try watching my video “ Nara vs Yupo” 😄
Stunning piece Randi ! 💕
Thank you very much ❤️
What type of dryer are you using? Thank you! Beautiful!
Thank you 🙏 it’s a Remington volume and curl. You can see a bit more about in my latest video, no 26
Can u share the dryer specifications? I am searching in amazon India but cant find the same one you are using
I don’t think Amazon has the one I’m using, but there is a Revlon hairdryer that is very similar to mine that a lot of other ink artist use.
Here’s a link for it amzn.to/3zlqxgT
Hope you find it 🤞
does your paper doesn't get warped? what paper u use?
I use Nara paper. It can handle the heat from my hairdryer without warping 😀
What type of paper is it ? Thanks in advance
This is Nara paper
Love your videos. I realize you are from Denmark, but what is that hand held air dryer you are using if you don't mid me asking.
Thank you 😊 mine is a Remington- if you look in the description below this video ua-cam.com/video/KLvTOfJbpRQ/v-deo.html
there is a link for a Revlon hairdryer that is pretty much the same as mine
So can you wipe Yupo- paper the same way? Because I cant do it. Does it only work with Nara? Thanks for your tips!
No sadly you can’t wipe all the ink of on Yupo. Some of the ink will leave stains on the paper that you just can’t remove....
On Nara you can wipe off everything, no stains 😊
I have been watching your videos for a little while now and would like to ask what brand of gold metallic(s) ink you use? Both of the golds I own are extremely dull compared to your metallics. Any wisdom you would be willing to part with would be genuinely appreciated. Thank you.
I use Piñata brass. It’s the best metallic I’ve tried. Very different than the other metallics because it floats on top of the ink.
@@randihart5731 Thank you for sharing this important information with me. Just looking at it in the bottle online, I can already tell it’s so much brighter and more metallic looking than what I have.
Is the company that makes this color A. Ink, Jacquard?
I KNOW you’ve received many compliments and kudos on your unique technique AND talent, I am officially adding my voice to all the others in love with your work.
Each piece I look at is breathtakingly beautiful. As if you, and the ink, are symbiotic, making it fascinating to watch you work.
Many would keep this gift to themselves, that you have been willing to share your technique with the world speaks very highly of you and your generous spirit.
I have taken a leap of faith that the company IS Jacquard. Feeling impatient, I already placed an order for a couple bottles of their metallic inks. Last question, do you use Jacquard inks exclusively, or do you mixed it up with other inks as well?
Happy New Year,
Alpine
Thank you very much for those kind words ❤️😊 the piñata brass IS Jacquard. I mix inks and metallics from all different brands. Besides jacquard I mostly use Ranger and Copic. Hope you have great success when your metallics arrive.
And happy new year to you
❤
❤️❤️
Why does everyone use brass instead of gold?
Because the piñata brass works much better then most gold inks, it stays on top of the ink and breaks of in to little pieces
Hello what gauge is your alcohol bottle
This is the one amzn.to/2UK0uAm
18 gauge I think….
What kind of hair dryer are you using? I’m not even sure what that kind is called to find it on UA-cam.
This is a Remington volume and curl. Not easy to find this particular one - but there is a very similar one from Revlon that a lot of people use. If you look in the description below this video ua-cam.com/video/KLvTOfJbpRQ/v-deo.html there is a link for the revlon one on Amazon 😊
@@randihart5731 thank you
@@amymason7697 you’re welcome
Can it be done without isopropyl alcohol ink?
You need some sort of alcohol to mix with the ink. I use grain alcohol 96%
@@randihart5731 where can I find this
A liquor store perhaps 🤔
Can you provide a link for the dryer you are using?
I can’t actually find the dryer anywhere, don’t know if they still make it…. But there is a Revlon dryer that is almost identical to the one I use. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PXYAL2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000PXYAL2&linkCode=as2&tag=randihart11-20&linkId=d249a8ab6fe6ef79829dd1ee19633a63
@@randihart5731 Thanks!!!
@@TheAhammock you’re welcome
Great. What kind o paper u use. Yupo ? What kind of yupo?
I think she may be using Grafix Craft Plastic since she's able to wipe it back so clean. I could be wrong, hope she answers for you 🙂
Randi. Thank you for the great tips. I’m just learning the art. What paper did you use in this video? I tried photo paper from Costco as well as some sold for alcohol ink. Both still stain before I get the hair dryer going. I didn’t d t see any stain
I g I. The tutorial. N 13:49
You’re welcome ☺️ I use Nara paper, it’s the best, almost no staining
Hello what kind of blower are you using
Hi. It’s a Remington volume and curl
Hey what is that with yellow cap?
It’s a fine line applicator with alcohol 😀
@@randihart5731 why do we use it?
You use the alcohol to move the ink 😊
@@randihart5731 so where do we have to put it? Closer than the ink or far,
You can put it around the ink or on top of the ink to mix it in
Lol not nut !! Now a beginner 😅
👍🤣🤣
WHERE DO YOU BUY NARA PAPER?
I buy from this danish shop, believe they ship worldwide www.krealaden.dk/vare-kategori/farver-og-maling/alkohol-ink/syntetisk-papir-yupo/
What’s that color? violet?
Ranger currant
the heatgun you use has the function cold air ?
It’s not a heatgun, it’s a hairdryer 👍 and it has cold air
@@randihart5731 Hello again . the blending solution has to be 99.9% alcol isopropolic? Can I by these bottles of 1 liter ?
Hi 😊 isopropyl alcohol is usually 91 or 99%.
I don’t use it anymore. I now use Navimer alcohol (grain alcohol)
@randihart5731 .. ah ok. but that's alcool for wines . 🍷
Yes it’s the drinking kind of alcohol 🥃
Thank you. No little voice! I am not listening! 🙉
You’re welcome 😉 very smart 👍🙉😀
Thanks so much for your great tips! Learned a lot.
You’re very welcome 😉
I’m just getting started or I guess I should say and intrigued. I am really curious about the materials especially the paper. I’ve looked at some of the other comments and will watch some of your other videos. I’m really glad I found you and subscribed I love the tips and you’re very minimalistic concept. You do beautiful work.
Thank you very much 😊 I do like the minimalistic style. People use mane different brands of paper, I pretty much only use Nara. You can wipe all the ink off and start over - less waist of paper.
😊😊 i have gotten many questions about paper, fine line bottles etc - so I have left some links for you guys in the description box for some of the stuff I use in this video 😊😊
your work is exactly what I love.. I am so excited to have discovered you!!!
Thank you 😊 I’m excited too 🤩
I’m a complete beginner with alcohol inks so this is really helpful thank you!
You’re very very welcome 😊
Awesome video thank you. So much great information 💕
Thank you and you’re welcome 💕💕
I have been listening that little voice so much that I made a mess most of the time. Plus my ink comes out in big globs. I'll go back and will do like you said. Maybe I can have a 2nd chance. Thank you so much for your video. 💓
You are very welcome 🙏 you can definitely have a 2nd chance, just push that voice out of your head 😀❤️
These are great tips and I love your piece!
Thank you 😊
It’s beautiful look like a orchid
Thank you very much 🌸
Looked extra good when you added the extra dark to give a sharper contrast! Love the finished piece 💙
Thank you 🙏 I’m a big fan of contrast, adds so much to a piece
Thanks dear, you are amazing and helpful
You’re very welcome and thank you ☺️
