Not sure if you caught it editing, but “Ross” pulls a gun out of an ankle holster 2 seconds after ditching his phone. Probably while you were talking about “present day’ being 2027. He shoots Prescod through the chest in self defense.
Remember the second piece of information the show gave us was that this takes place "Present day."
This implies that we may see scenes that do not take place presently.
In the comics I think the Skrulls are looking for a new planet, because Galactus ate their home world. Then the Skrull Queen interprets their holy book as stating that Earth will be their second home & they'll own it (without humans).
Hill followed G'iah because she saw her leave the building Fury and Talos just went into.
The Asgardians aren't looking to expand and conquer the Earth, which is what the Skrull want.
even if the skrulls weren't after that, humans would *never* allow a species on earth that can steal people's memories and appearances to set foot on this planet. all it takes is one skrull being recruited by a government as a spy and they're incredibly powerful. asgardians are super strong, but they look like people, who as a species have a historically really bad time with people who don't look like us, and thor and his entire family are historical figures where the asgardians have chosen to settle

The Asgardians are welcome to live openly on earth because, aside from them conspicuously all being insanely hot, they look pretty much exactly like human beings. A Skrull can only pass as human when simming.
Nerdy sometimes nitpicks so much he fails to see the forest for the trees. There are obviously far more Skrulls who need a home than Asgardians. We saw the Asgardian population decimated before Love and Thunder. Not all of the Skrulls are on earth. Sometimes I feel like he asks questions and allows them to detract from the show before allowing the show to answer those questions.
plus, has he met humans? we're generally really not cool to people who don't look like us, coupled with the fact that those people could if they wanted to steal our appearances and memories? humans would never let them live here, and skrulls would never be happy being confined to a prison community, nor should they be. they should have their own home, but it should be a habitable planet with no civilization they have to wipe out first, like their own home.
I am convinced they would be a much more successful reaction channel if he would stop with his pretentious nitpicking, which often is nitpicking silly things or things he is just flat out wrong about. Guys head is way up his own... its like he took a film analysis class in college and then decided he was a film expert savant after that.
@@ISavant episode two did a really good job at answering these questions. Nick Fury was 100% right when he said humans couldn't live with another species. After multiple alien invasions including one that blipped half the planet, even someone who's progressive in their thinking might even become xenophobic towards aliens.
I assume part of the problem of allocating land to the Skrulls is that they would have to reveal their existence to a lot more people if not make it public. Asgardians look just like us and mick and Korg seem to stay in new Asgard.
On top of them looking alien naturally, the biggest issue is that they CAN turn into other people. Think of how the public would react to that, let alone militaries. There would be crazy paranoia and panic and suspicion among the general populace.
Militaries and governments would either want to eradicate them due to the massive security risk they pose, or forcibly recruit them to act as spies.
But, the most likely reason, they don’t want to risk the kree finding out that a bunch of skrulls are hiding out on earth, cuz then the kree army would come to kill them all.
I think part of the problem in finding the Skrulls a home, even an open one on Earth like New Aasgard, is that they are still being hunted by the Kree. I think at the end of Captain Marvel they left to go find more hidden pockets of Skrulls in the universe to bring them back to Earth to hide.
I think the biggest difference from the asgardians is the shapeshifter how can you trust someone who could look like anyone etc...
Exactly. The moment people realise shapeshifters came to Earth they will freak out. In reality i would demand way to track them 24/7, way to detect them easily, important safety procedures for all key positions, etc. Even then....
With regards to the opening credits - I'm willing to bet that a whole team of artists cleaned the output up, picked the best images to get what they wanted across, and sequenced them to make a disjointed but clearly intentional opening credits. It's just like any other industry where technology comes along - the work remains, but the nature of the work changes. Even so, we're still a few years away from a non-artist saying "Computer, create opening credits" and getting something good out of it (but it's coming).
Idk, they still probably used technologies like DALL-E, since the style look similar. If they did, then yes they are kind of profiting of something that takes work from other people, like I know that many people argue that is similar to how humans take inspiration in other works, but even then there are regulations to do it. And look, it wouldn't be a problem if the world was different and artists didn't need to fight for their work to pay for the bills, but I find it distasteful for a big studio like Marvel (known for not respecting its VFX artists) to just replace artists without really considering the ethical implications, in a time where we are worried (or at least should be) that big corporations are just going to profit of this technology to replace workers and give the middle finger to everyone else. And I say all of this as a person that uses AI and is eager to know what comes next in its advancements

@@richardbrown3055 yes I've seen that argument many times but I don't think that's the problem. The problem is that artists are the only ones being affected. I'm not against the use of AI, I actually use it a lot, but it has to be done responsibly and regulated, not just using it without considering the ethical problems by a big greedy company who would gladly replace it's workers with machines if it meant a good profit

When we met Gravik on screen he was being briefed by his lieutenant who informed him that Nick was on Earth, walking with a limp and that he was old and out of the game. The last few minutes of the episode showed us that Gravik didn't need his men to tell him about Nick because he was already watching him--Gravik was the little girl with a ball, the woman kissing some guy on a bench and the old man at the bar. Nick knew he was being watched and made sure he presented himself the way he wanted people to see him: he arrived in an open field where anyone looking could have seen him; he went for a walk late a night with no guards of any kind; and he had a very public disagreement with Maria who questioned his readiness.
Nick IS NOT WASHED UP. He's putting on a show, and he's doing to the Skrull council the same thing he did to Alexander Pierce in the Winter Soldier, suckering them into a false since of comfort. Nick had to allow them succeed in their attack, because he's trying to lure the big wigs out into the open so that he can wipe them out all at once.
Nick has been watching things since Far From Home--that's when we learned where he's been. WandaVision showed us that Nick was indeed watching the happens on Earth--he sent a Skrull agent to pick up Monica during the finale. Falcon and the Winter Soldier set this series up--we're about to meet the Power Broker, which is likely the council of Skrulls that kicked Talos out. Doctor Wilfred Nagel was commissioned by them to reproduce Doctor Erskine's Super Soldier serum and you might recall that the 20 vials the Power Broker order were stolen and destroyed, save for the one John Walker used on himself. The Power Broker didn't get the 20 ordered, but Dr. Nagel likely had to prove that he could indeed reproduce the super serum before the 20 were stolen, and I think we just got proof that he did indeed do that via Gravik! Skrulls have to see the person they're going to copy and we've known that since Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel also showed us that Skrull's can't copy powers. Why was Gravik able to seamlessly transform into four different people? Is Dr. Erskine's serum flowing through his veins? I think so, and one of the commercial for the series showed Gravik doing something with his arm that looked a lot like something Groot would have done.
Anyway, back to Maria, I don't think she's dead. This whole thing was for show in the same way Nick's death was in the Winter Soldier. Gravik succeeding in his attack and Nick Fury losing his trusted agent really makes it look like Nick Fury is past his prime, no? So how does Maria survive a gunshot wound to the gut? Well, she survives by not being shot. I don't think that was Maria that was shot, but Talos' wife Soren who we were told died off camera. It sounds like Soren and Talos didn't see eye-to-eye with how to handle this crisis and rather than keep fighting Talos about how to deal with it, I think Soren faked her death and assumed the identity of Maria Hill, a person she's been impersonating since Far From Home--we were told in this episode the longer a Skrull stays in his/her shell the more difficult it is for humans/Skrulls to figure things out. If Talos thinks his wife is dead, he has no reason to suspect that Maria isn't Maria. Clarus brought up a big point, I don't see many people talking about and she asked when G'iah was fighting Maria! How is it that Maria is able to go toe-to-toe with a Skrull when Talos nearly destroyed Nick when they first went at it in Captain Marvel, and we should forget about the fight that just happened, between Talos and the other Skrull. If Maria Hill were human, she shouldn't have been able to do as well as she did when fighting G'iah! More importantly, how did she spot G'iah so quickly? Maybe this isn't much of an issue because Maria is good at her job, but I think she spotted her quickly because a mother knows her daughter.
This first episode felt a lot like the first act of the Winter Soldier to me. While Cobie Smulders got a special guest appearance tag, I think we'll see her back in the third act as Nick Fury appeared in the Winter Soldier, during the big reveal showing that Nick never lost a beat.

The AI thing was confirmed to have been done deliberately for the themes, but yes they did drop the ball and should have hired human artists to mimic AI.

I think Rhodie is a Skull, casting doubt on Fury. I'd be surprised the President is one, he'd be harder to get access to, to replace. I think Talos is going to die. Gaia's mother being kill sadly wasn't enough to flip her, but if both parents are kill, that may be the final straw. Or, enough Skrulls get killed Talos turns. Or the Gaia we've been seeing isn't really Gaia, and she's being held. o.0 Man this plot could be complicated. The plot on top of plot on top of plot, that IS possible, is something that could be really exciting to watch.
It'll be fun trying to guess who is a Skrull and who isn't.
The Skrull plan isn't to share Earth, but to wipe out humanity to take it.
The president would be easy to replace. Replace the secret service agents at their homes and then replace the president. It would take 10 minutes to replace a regular person and maybe up to three days to get the president after incrementally replacing his inner circle.
I think the reason why the Skrulls are not just settling down is a bit different from the Asgardians. The fact that they are shapechangers makes it so much more difficult, dude commits a crime, "wasn't me, was a Skrull" ... Hard to prove beyond reasonable doubt, etc. They just cause so much more Paranoia than the Asgardians. Suspicion and distrust would reach new heights.
I think the issue with Skrulls living on Earth is they can shape shift to look like anyone. That would be a major problem. It’s more than a Hulk or guy that looks like a rock.
I have motion detection lights in the stairwell of my building.
If you were to visit my house, you would encounter motion controlled lights everywhere. Inside and out. Hubby is in the process of installing them in our bedroom closet. I love them.
LOL In C's defense, that brightly colored rainbow ball has a pink stripe in it, right at the top of the ball (in the Unity Day scene). Non-Pride rainbows don't usually have that. :)

With as much racism and discrimination as we have between our own race, I don't feel like the Skrulls would be welcomed with open arms. You bring up the point about the Asgardians, but the were literally worshipped by humans, so not really the same, IMO.

More importantly, the Asgardians *look human.* Your point about human xenophobia is absolutely spot on.
Asgardians are known to be affiliated with Thor and the Avengers, so they are thought of as good people to have around. While Hulk is very destructive, he's also known to be a good guy. I don't think the general public knows about Skrulls at all, and that's probably intentional because people would freak out if they knew that Skrulls could impersonate literally anyone in the word - people with the power to bring entire nations to war or destruction. That's a very dangerous power that those in power would want to control or eliminate.

I will grant Disney that this show is better than their last 3 or 4 shows. The beginning fake out with Ross I was thinking he was skrull then they grabbled and he ran, so I changed my mind. Then he was an effin' skrull. So that was good subversion of my prediction.
Update: Fury promised them a new home and then blipped. The promise was unfulfilled for five years.

While I do think the "You're not the same since the blip" got pushed a little too hard I do feel it's important. Yes obviously Fury is much older but more than that I think it's more so that his spirit has been broken. I think that in his mind the greatest act of terrorism in the history of the the universe happened on his watch and that's something even the Avengers cant undo. To nerdy's point I dont think Fury is that integral to the day to day of S.A.B.E.R and even if he was Nick Fury is always spinning a million plates that's what he does. He put himself out to pasture and has been self isolating ever since.

I think the thing with people accepting the Asgardians and not the Skrulls is meant to convey the bias that some countries have towards excepting different races of refugees like in America it is harder for a person from a Black or Brown country to immigrate to America but way easier for say a European to immigrate there. Also sure people like the Hulk, Thor,,etc the same way Americans like Rhianna and Bad Bunny but would they feel comfortable with hundreds of thousands of people from Dominican Republic and Barbados coming to the US that would be a hard no

I am surprised y'all didn't remark on Sonya Falsworth's suggestion that Nick Fury being mistaken for Paul Robeson's ghost, an African American footballer from Rutgers University, famous for playing Joe in the 1936 film version of Show Boat who famously sang Old Man River and ran afoul of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee chaired by Senator Joe McCarthy in the 1950s do to his pro-Soviet public remarks.
As a black man in Moscow the ghost of Paul Robeson suggestion by Sonya Falsworth made me chuckle. Is she related to the British Falsworth from Captain America: The First Avenger?

Skrulls in the MCU versus Skrull lore in the comics have diverged a lot already, to the point that I'm already a lot more confused about the grander plan of taking Earth, beyond getting back at Fury. But, with regards to Asgardians treatment Vs. the Skrulls, they're a false equivilency.
Asgard's current population is far smaller. Asgard has a longer standing cultural history with Earth (Nordic lore and mythology being part of Asgardian history). Asgardians and Earthlings look alike. Asgard is propped by one of Earth's most beloved heroes.
If they had more nuance, they would touch upon Asgard's utter decline, and maybe how their race does see a racial difference between them and the hosts of Earth, but for now the Skrulls very much play that narrative part.
They came far more in secret. Look alien. And historically in the Marvel lore have a far more aggressive history with Earth and it's heroes. This doesn't translate perfectly to the MCU's more empathatic view of them and their plight. So the workaround thus far has been clunky. The Skrulls are being portrayed here as a desperate race who've patiently played a passive role, and pushed beyond the brink to a more hostile leader. The many Skrulls in the comics have a far more hostile stance from the outset.
i dont see ai art as a problem. they wont have some artists stuff stolen so its totaly fine.

its not better or worse being an artist who paints or an ai art guy who knows how to make the ai do stuff ... its also a person that get paid and has a family and all that stuff ...

In fairness to Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the production had a plot of vaccines against a deadly plague that the Flag Smashed were stealing initially before the Covid-19 pandemic frightened Disney into rewriting and resulting in most of the season bein hastily reshot, disrupting the continuity of the whole.
Also I totally agree that I don't understand why they have room for a compound with their own foods growing and such, and yet they're saying they haven't been given a home, like does the compound not have enough room for everyone...? And if it does, could they not talk to the government(s) and ask if they can have that space for their home base? Hopefully they'll make it clearer what the issues are.
Skrulls cannot live in peace in their natural form. Also cannot possibly have enough room for all Skrulls. They had a whole planet

so from what i took away from the first episode, earth is compatible with Skull crops. which seems like might not be the case for other planets. this faction of skrulls could say, why would we go looking for another planet when we have one right here.
and they would need their own planet, because humans would never willingly share a planet with a species that can steal our looks and memories.

why wouldn't the kree want somewhere they can call home? humans would *never* knowingly allow skrull to live here, even confined to their own ghetto because their power is inherently deceptive. and scientifically speaking any planet that is habitable, probably has something living there, and where there's an ecosystem, there's likely apex predators, and apex predators really don't like being displaced

There are plenty of ethical uses for AI, it just gets extra complicated when talking about its use in various artforms. I, personally, want to encounter art created by living, breathing creatures, whether that be writing/literature, acting, music, painting, or whatever. I *particularly* wish to encounter only art created by organics when it is in a consumer setting; I want my money to go to supporting the artists, not the machines. An artist using AI as a tool to assist in the creation of whatever they're creating is fine; a studio replacing an artist with AI is not.

As always, there are so many awful stereotypes about Russians. When I watched the first episode, I felt personally offended by so many stupid things. Vodka, "Na zdorovie", russian dolls. They even presented the National Unity Day as smth important in Russia, even though nobody actually celebrates it.

yup. nobody sat down and typed "give me a credit sequence for a tv show" into discord and had midjourney spit out that video, that took a *lot* of work to make but because it wasn't one person sitting at a tablet drawing every single frame somehow it's bad.
I'm hoping that it's some sort of Skull trick or something or that they pull a Nick Fury in WS and have Talos get Maria to medical or something because I'm tired of Marvel fridging their female characters and not only that but these are supposedly highly trained Shield Agents who went into a mission knowing it was dangerous; why wouldn't they have worn any protective gear like a bulletproof vest, for example? So I find that frustrating, personally.
The issue is that they want a planet of their own. two intelligent species cannot share the same ecosystem, one will eventually stamp out the their, look at the native Americans and the Europeans. Plus the fact that the Skrulls have the ability to shape shift makes them very hard to trust. and earthlings aren't the most trusting to begin with especially with the recent history of alien invasions within the MCU. New Asgard is a little easier for the Scandinavians to accept because those were their deities. Their existence was already ingrained into their culture for a millennia. Finding a planet for them to call home is not as easy as it may seem. Any planet that can support life does support life that would not want to be displaced.
No the opening credits are AI. While it is super disappointing, I think the credits actually being AI instead of an artist making it look like AI does work for the theme of the show. This is a paranoid thriller where you're not supposed to know who and what you can trust and what exemplifies that more than having AI generated credits?
also, what if they hired an artist who recognizes image generators are a *tool*? as someone who actually has fucked around with them, it's not like one person sitting at a computer wrote "create a credits sequence for my TV show", and a computer spat out what we saw, a *lot* of work had to go into what we saw in the credits.
Where does your definition of artist end? If it was "traditional" cgi would you consider that as having been made by artists? Does it have to be hand painted cells? Painstakingly constructed stop motion? Produced on film instead of digital?

They did hire people to make the AI art I guess lol. I don’t mind it really cause it fits in the theme of the show and serves the greater “art” of the directors vision.
If an artist used an AI painting as a statement pieces within a larger hand drawn art piece I wouldn’t admonish them. There’s no intent by the show to “steal a job” from an artist and they haven’t even said they got it from public art or not etc anyways.
You have no idea how this was ACTUALLY made and it shows.
@@suddenimpulse030 I didn't like it. I don't think it looks good. I personally have used AI to make better images than this and I'm unskilled. Tying the imagery of AI to the Skrulls was a mistake, imo, and you are right, I don't know how it was created. I just know I don't like it. I don't like the AI imagery being used as a fear fear factor in the show and I especially don't like that Fury, et al, forgot every bit of spycraft that they have been using in the marvel movies to this point, and got Hill killed. Hire artists to do the art well not try to evoke AI imagery, is what I should have said. Cheers!
