How to (almost) capsize a c-foil trimaran

- Bowsprit camera view of a Corsair F31 1D production trimaran at full speed in the San Francisco's Northbay. An unexpected strong gust causes the Ama/float to fully submerge. The C-Foil on the leeward side was fully deployed. The boat decelerates from 20 knots (almost 40 km/h) to near standstill in seconds. Thankfully nothing broke, the forces on mast and rigging must have been insane. It did throw me forward and off my feet into the mainsheet traveller that is mounted in the cockpit center. It nicely shows the importance of staying clipped into safety harness and jacklines when at speed and the need to be able to un-cleat the main or at least jib in seconds if needed. Ian Farrier (RIP) designed amazingly safe and fast boats.
Great recovery. A bit like watching Ayrton Senna saving a massive slide. You are right to emphasize the importance of closing the circuit when doing these speeds.
Fantastic Video! That ama went deep! Its video's like yours that gives me confidence in my boat. You mentioned being able to un-cleat quickly... I see why so many people rig their jib with the winch and the cam cleat below rather than with the self tailer. It allows an instant dump. Thanks for sharing with us. I know there's more video tucked away in that GoPro of yours LOL😉.
Aloha,
Cullen
That's exactly what I do. Jib sheets with 2 or max 3 turns on winch and runs to cleat. I will make a complete walk-through video of my setup and how I sail the boat single handed in the near future.
Nice save! Looks like a nicely over-powered day on the Bay.
Great clip and great save!!!
Holy moly!!!! Nice recovery! That's scary!
(I almost capsized my 28R soloing with a spinnaker. Rounded up after losing steering to an airated/cavitated rudder. Got it back at the last second. Scared the living s--t out of me!)
Great video cap!!! And lucky save...pfweeeyyyww...
Submarine testing! Doesn’t look like it pulled right or left, did it just dive and not broach? What point of sail were you on?
I was on a "Beam reach". No pull during dive - not sure if the foil stabilized. I never had such a big nose dive with or without foil.
Great boat handling. I see you were able to uncleat the jib really quickly. Did you also ease the main? I’d like to see the event in real time. Couldn’t have been more than a few seconds from when the leeward ama got buried until the boat was stable again.
Yes both Jib and Main where let out. You are right, I should have added the real-time version to the video. And yes it all goes super fast 2-3 seconds.
if it was great boat handling he would have had crew hiked to weather and never buried the ama and hit 22knots instead of submarining at 20kn ...just sayin'
@@Sugarsail1 You clearly do not understand the broader context and other conversations around this video.
Is that some kind of float under the bow sprit? Is that there in case of just such a nose dive? Seems like a good idea if you sail on the edge a lot. And whoever was on the jib sheet got it loose fast!
No float under bowsprit. It is maybe the end-cap that you are seeing(?). Maybe it looks funny because the camera is attached to the end of a sail-batten, which in turn is held to the bowsprit by 5inch hose-clamps. I singlehand the boat. A setup and safety walk-through video is coming.
Mark Eastham used to have a boxing glove on the sprit, that’s really what you should have. :-)
