Fast Production Trimaran Sailed on the Limit Solo

An attempt to uniquely capture the speed, elegance & thrill of a fast production trimaran sailed singlehanded at full speed in San Francisco Bay. Inspired by the question: "What is it like when you put the "hammer down" on that thing?" The boat is 31ft long and built in 2005 by Corsair Marine in California. The model is the F-31-1D foldable and trailerable trimaran with carbon mast, carbon boom...
How to (almost) capsize a c-foil trimaran

Bowsprit camera view of a Corsair F31 1D production trimaran at full speed in the San Francisco's Northbay. An unexpected strong gust causes the Ama/float to fully submerge. Thankfully nothing broke, the forces on mast and rigging must have been insane. It did th...

    We used to have an F-31R (I think we had it from like 1999 or something into the early 2000's?). We had a taller rig on it, non-integral bowsprit, huge code zero, and modified the cockpit to add glassed in extensions on the sides of the aft deck to enable a very powerful conventional mainsheet with an extended traveler that could go a bit outboard of where the factory hull stopped. That boat screamed, but it looks like yours sits much better on those C-foils-- the lack of bouyancy in the floats was always an issue for us. Good job adapting the boat to the high-performance rig!

    The electrical upgrade was my favorite part. Beautifully done.

  • @fugue137
    @fugue137 3 місяці тому

    Nice! I am hoping to upgrade from my F-22 to an F-33. I'm currently using a Torqueedo 1-kW outboard (1003), which is plenty on the small boat. I thought I'd need a lot more for a 33, but... I don't have to do much motoring (just emergencies and sometimes docking if the wind is awkward), and I notice that you're going very well at 1 kW on Condor. Under what conditions do you need to use more power than this? I wonder if e.g. a high-thrust propeller would save me the trouble of a fancy new motor setup...

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch 3 місяці тому

      For me the biggest issue with our boats is "chop / waves" when the wind picks up, causing the propeller to come out of the water for a short moment. Of course this will happen with a gas outboard too. I never had a situation where I needed more power so far.

      Yes Battery is extra - you can see prices on Torqeedo's website. Prepare to be shocked!. You can use non-Torqeedo batteries (48V) which would be a cheaper option.

    Thanks for the informative video. I've been thinking about a setup like this for a few years now. If one is a sailor and coastal cruiser, and uses the engine only to get in and out of marinas, electric propulsion just makes a lot more sense, especially for a lightweight trimaran. Plus the weight distribution is better. I'm just not liking them Toqeedos - seems flimsy for all that price. But I think having a motor with regen would also make a lot of sense. Maybe not at 16kn, but at 6-12kn why not.

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch 4 місяці тому

      "All" the electric outboard brands appear to have never been to the ocean. Regardless of brand, it feels & looks like a big Lego Motor : ) If you can go to a boat show and look at it in person. That being said, mine still works flawless. Just need to be careful with it. I wouldn't go back to fuel.

  • @danielreilly7830
    @danielreilly7830 5 місяців тому

    Do the C-foils add to ride comfort at all in this boat, in terms of roll or pitch damping? I've read that on some foilers and foil-assist boats they kind of tame the jerky motion a lot of multihulls have, but does that work with your setup?

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch 5 місяців тому

      Zero comfort gains. The foils are simply too small for that. They start working at 10kts ( by providing better upwind angles, not really any lift yet). At 16 to 18 kts boat speed they offer lift. At this point the boat is fully planning and more surfboard than sailboat. I can then start carefully pushing it to 20 to 21kts and then I wish they would be bigger :) lol. But bigger foils (aside from $$$$) would put strain on the boat that it is simply not designed for. Same with any T-Foil rudder fantasy. It's just not made for it. So bottom line - great upwind boost at low speeds and a few extra knots and a little safety when "pushing" the limit. Probably not worth the tens of thousands to retrofit an existing F-boat. But way cool to have scored a boat that came with them.

    Great video. The interior of the boat is amazing. A few technical questions: 1) Can you give a time estimate for how long it took you to get rid of the carpet? Also is there any specific technique or product you would recommend? 2) Did you paint the carbon fiber bowsprit? 3) Have you had your spars evaluated with ultrasound, or are you planning to do this at some point?

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch 8 місяців тому

      1) Carpet removal 12 work hours. Sanding probably 20 work hours, maybe more. I could have sanded another 20 hours for only a marginal smoother finish. No fairing compound was used for weight reasons 2) Yes painted - just a little white spray paint, not a full perfect coating. Just some over-spray. Reason: I actually prefer the look over black carbon. Added benefit: It doesn't get super hot baking in the sun. 3) I have not had them checked with ultrasound. I have (some) composite experience and (maybe foolishly) trusted my judgement on the integrity of so far. Should I ever "stress" any spar to a point where it becomes questionable, I would do so. But for now no.

    Thomas, thanks for the great presentation. I have a 30 foot Condor trimaran. Think F31 but beefier and slower in light winds. But the fight is on in mid range winds. On heavy wind days the F31's hulls amas aren't full enough to keep up with the fuller hulls on a Condor. Love what you have done to strip your boat for racing. Those days are gone for me. I have thought many times about the electric motors. But I sail in more remote areas. For example, sailing from Mulege Baja heading east to San Carlos it is about a 10 hour sail. The first 3+hours there is no wind and the sea was like glass. Don't know how the Torqueedo would do with doing 6-7 knots for 3 hours. Great challenges for the pocket book also.

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch 9 місяців тому

      Doing 6kts I would draw 1300 to 1500 Watts per hour in light winds. That's 4500 Watts in 3h out of my 7000 Watts total available. You would need to have a nice Solar array making you at least 800W @48V to make that sustainable travel.

    Thanks for the video! It’s inspiring to see how you’ve built such a great looking boat from just the hull! I’ve recently been gifted an older B14 that is sailable, but missing some parts. I’ve never restored a boat before, so I’m quite nervous! My boat needs a new daggerboard (it currently has a salvaged daggerboard from a different boat that is kept from falling off the slot by some foams!), an asymmetrical spinnaker, a pole, and a wing kit. I would appreciate it very much if you could give some pointers as to where to get the parts and any other tips. I’m in Canada.

    Terrific video. It's like 8 videos in one. I was getting a kick out of you hanging ten off the bow while the port ama flew, and then almost flipping! Your quick release jam cleat is a really important lesson for all sailors. They have adjustable auto release ones on the Mausadon cats, like the ORC 57. Brilliant rigging on your boat. Like your high jack (safety) lines. I have these on my monohull. I'd like to take credit, but the previous owner, a fireman, had them rigged like that. They work as handholds docked and at sea. Easier to clip into. Your Corsair and the other trimarans are amazing boats. It's easy to make straps like your 'car straps.' Buy webbing and then use any good (steel framed) sewing machine. Just match a stitch pattern. I liked the 5 to 10 straight bars on my PFD life life so that's usually what I do. (I've got a Janome sewing machine, the case is plastic but the frame is steel. The revelation for me was to sew webbing you use a 'ball' needle (I can't see or feel the difference) because when you sew webbing, the needle pushes around, not through the threads of the material.) I love bungee cords, but you usually won't see them on my 45' monohull or any other ocean sailing vessel. They lose their stretch. What should be happening is we should be using them and then just marking a date on our calendars, "Replace All Bungees." In Japan we couldn't find bungees instead we found rubber strips (like bicycle tires) and hooks. DIY. Not as pretty but a much wider range of options. (I still see online photos of the boat I sailed on across the Pacific, it's only been a couple of months, but there's my DIY rubber straps holding down the life raft container.) A sealed bag of these would probably be a great back up to have on a boat. Once you figure out ways to do the end loops/clips you're good to go.

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch Рік тому

      The Corsair F-31 was built in various layouts and configurations. It is therefore difficult to generalize performance. All of them will reach about 18 knots top speed. My boat is the rare and performance oriented "1D" model, plus I have Cfoils. I get close to 22 knots of boat speed sailing by myself, but that is rare and scary. 20knots is no problem however. The boat will exceed the wind speed or at least match the wind speed under 20mph winds, a heavier cruising F31 may not achieve this that easily.

    • @thomashasch
      @thomashasch Рік тому

      1) So far I sailed the boat "only" up to true 25 knots wind speed in SF Bay (cold dense wind) a few times. Boat speed was 19.5 kts steady with 21.3 kts peak (at slack tide) with 1st reef in the main and a small jib. Without my c-foils this would have been not safe and border-lining on dangerous. 2) By the end of this summer I will have more data (and hopefully video) on sailing under 2nd reef and small jib. I don't want to make any predictions as far as max wind and boat speed. Stay tuned to the channel I will post when I have something worth sharing.
