  • We take my friends Pearson ensign out for a daysail around miami. Then I take my Bayfield 29 on a 100 miles offshore passage from Miami to the Keys. I make an unfortunate mistake along the way due to lack of sleep.

Brother, never polish your channel up like a lot of the other cruising channels out there. We love The beauty of your adventures mixed with the chaos of breaking things, wrestling with sails, falling asleep and crashing your boat. One of my favorites was when you left your boat anchored to fly somewhere and meet a chick saying “I hope it’s still here when I get back” followed by the next episode “my boats gone”😂. You make us believe we all can do what you do. After all, it’s just keeping going till you screw up, fix the screw up, learn from it and keep going. Fair wind and smooth travels from South Carolina.

Apparently you used to be able to rent those stilt houses, but then they were consumed by a national park and now they're going unmaintained. That seems to happen a lot, national parks are formed in the name of "conservation", but homes are torn down and families forced out. Some of those stilthouses had families in them. Why does a park extend so far offshore anyway, super odd

Really enjoy watching your videos. You're living my dream life basically. I'm planning on cycling to the coast to find work so I can afford to buy a sailboat, hopefully on the cheap. I'm completely broke currently and homeless, unemployed, etc. But I'm tired of working junk low paying jobs and paying too much for rent in dumpy apartments with shitty neighbors. I'm handy with tools and basic mechanics but poorly educated really my interest is getting into computers for 3D printing, cnc lathing, designing, machining but have zero experience with computers other than clicking the 🐁. I'm determined though and got snowed in Missoula for now. I should be able to fix most of anything on a sailboat while living on it and either working some job or going to school. I was always one paycheck away from being homeless most of my adult life and then it finally happened in 2015 and I've been homeless since then. I've really had a shit life and would rather die in a sailboat than in a two man tent living on a sidewalk. Funny question Sam, have you ever been a driller in the North Dakota Basin? Thanks for sharing your videos with others who want to live the dream.

Maybe a useful tip for solo Sailors on Passage ? I have hearing difficulties, so wanted something cheap that would definitely wake me up with an Anchor watch app while fast asleep at Anchor. Found a cheap android mobile phone with a really loud audio and speaker made by LG, and sadly no longer available. It proved to be awesome for night watches when solo in the Cockpit as an alarm call. If in clear water, no other boats around, I'd set it for 15 minutes, wake up check around still nothing, reset for 15 minutes. Any traffic around, drop it to 10 minutes or stay awake until a 10 minute nap would be safe, and so on. worked like a charm. I haven't found one since that is that loud. The Anchor watch saved my boat after it got hit by a really powerful Tornado that hit so hard from the Starboard side, the VHF aerial on top of the Mast went under water on the Port side with such force, it drove the Anchor out withbthe sideways pressure, and man did that alarm get me moving. Engine in, into reverse, and flew that Anchor through the line of boats behind me into clear water and reanchoring. Note to Sam, I couldn't have flown that Anchor through the gap between the boats if I had been on a multihull boat. one of the reasons I will never buy one. another reason is the cost if you have to go into a Marina , plus I can't hit on with the disorientating Corkscrew Hull motion in not uncommon sea conditions. A Trimaran is better in that regard than a Catamaran, but Marina costs etc suck just as badly, and while I like the idea of Wharram Cats, having built a Dory with Best Quality hardwood Marine Ply, I wouldn't waste money on a ything that isn't built out of GRP, because anywhere in the World you can get GRP Repairs done relatively easily and cheaply if needed. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Sam, why didn't your autopilot keep you from the shore? Could you also set an alarm on the chartplotter if you are off course or in charted low water?
Also, if the water is "that" shallow, why not just drop the hook for a power nap?
(or take it to shallower waters for a quick detour/rest stop...I know that wouldn't work in the deep blue, but in this case your issues were mostly due to shallows, right?)

Watch alarm is off and the deck boss runs aground 6 hours later. Floods 3 compartments and we're saved by our trash pumps. Seen another boat do the same last Summer and it was a total loss USCG blew it up in unimack pass to get it off the rocks.

Glad everything worked out alright, Sam, and that you and boat were safe after running aground. Hope you were able to catch up on some sleep and that your thumb is healing and the ingrown nail, too. Thanks for sharing the footage of your sail on the Pearson Ensign -- I'm actually looking at buying a 1981 Pearson Ensign. I love Carl Alberg designed sailboats, but finding one that's not a project boat is proving to be somewhat tough. Fair winds!

i love how sam smiles and in a monotone fashion explains how he is frustrated with himself, when i get frustrated with myself it, um, yeah....it is not like that.... like at all... haha, really appreciate you showing this and the other recent video of some of these mistakes/mishaps etc. you always make it all look so easy, and I suppose it is with experience, but running aground while sleeping and literally losing your boat and then finding it seem like two pretty big ordeals... though i'm sure running aground happens quite a bit to folks... also very cool dock spot at the end, and sometimes you just need to get some rest, glad you showed that you took a nap after that other part where you got frustrated before the nap trying to get into the channel, that time you could actually see a faint hint of what us simple folk call frustration, but barely haha. tides and currents are two things, as a total beginner, seem super challenging to me, but I suppose it all becomes doable with experience, you make it look pretty easy. i guess one of many rules is that you can only access certain places with certain boats at certain tides and times of day and that changes, and currents are sometimes constant and sometimes those change too, so you have to factor all of that in a lot more when you dont have a power boat/limited motoring abilities.

P.S. Since you mentioned the Wharram, have you checked out Kiana Weltzien and her 41 ft Wharram, Mara Noka's, story? She's got a great video of her sailing the boat across the Atlantic. I think she's actually done four Atlantic crossings in the boat. She's pretty rad!

If you want a heck of a laugh regarding a Wharram, tune into Wildlings Sailing. Poor Marky bought a 42' in Holland and its bare boned and has been floating in a bay for 7/8 years and not ever moved. Just a pair of hulls and cross beams.
      but he only paid $2000.

Sam before I retired I worked as an airline pilot with widely varying work schedules. Of course over sleeping at your hotel was absolutely unacceptable so I always had at least two alarms and also set up a wake up call from the hotel front desk. One thing about oversleeping is that it seems that little extra sleep you get is always so restful.

I'm semi-retired but I used to do a lot of domestic business travel. Before I trusted my smartphone I relied completely on the hotel wake-up call (I was never confident in setting the clock-radio alarm, which was different in each hotel). The wake up call was automated and one time I set it for 7:00 AM and didn't receive the call until like 7:16 which, on a tight schedule, made a big difference. After that, I started setting the call for 6:59, or just one minute before the time I wanted to wake up. After that, I must have been the first call of the morning because, I never had a late wake up call again.
