Sam before I retired I worked as an airline pilot with widely varying work schedules. Of course over sleeping at your hotel was absolutely unacceptable so I always had at least two alarms and also set up a wake up call from the hotel front desk. One thing about oversleeping is that it seems that little extra sleep you get is always so restful.
I'm semi-retired but I used to do a lot of domestic business travel. Before I trusted my smartphone I relied completely on the hotel wake-up call (I was never confident in setting the clock-radio alarm, which was different in each hotel). The wake up call was automated and one time I set it for 7:00 AM and didn't receive the call until like 7:16 which, on a tight schedule, made a big difference. After that, I started setting the call for 6:59, or just one minute before the time I wanted to wake up. After that, I must have been the first call of the morning because, I never had a late wake up call again.

Apparently you used to be able to rent those stilt houses, but then they were consumed by a national park and now they're going unmaintained. That seems to happen a lot, national parks are formed in the name of "conservation", but homes are torn down and families forced out. Some of those stilthouses had families in them. Why does a park extend so far offshore anyway, super odd
Your idea of using two alarm clocks is a good one I'll tell you what I used to do my watch my cellphone wear on my wrist and next to my bed those were two alarms then I had two alarm clocks that I set at distances such that I couldn't reach them from the bed I had to physically stand-up which would make sure I was awake and make sure those two are loud
Hey Sam take those opportunities of beaching yourself to take a real nap fix it in the morning or set an alarm for your high tide, Done it many times you’re already beached what’s the worst that’s going to happen
Dude, I just solo sailed from green bay, lake Michigan to Daytona beach... I'm a stout " monohull" guy . But just sold it and am going to a wharram or tri also. As of right now I'm eyeballing the die cut Mana 24 kit from wharram. A diyer like you might like that
That was a best case scenario of running aground while asleep. Is there a way to set an alarm on the gps to sound if you get within x feet of the shore? I was a soldier for six years and have much experience with sleep deprivation. Shutting off an alarm within your reach without gaining consciousness is very common, especially if the alarm is always in the same spot and you have muscle memory of silencing it. I never have but some people will even walk to shut off an alarm and get back into bed, all without waking.
Hey Sam, I’m on a month long solo sailing trip in the keys on a Catalina 25, I’m currently in long key. Would love to drop by and say hi if we’re close at some point
Perhaps if you had used the old fashioned kitchen timers with a long ring (I set two in order to be extra safe), you'd stay beachs. They have no "pause" settings. They just ring!
Running into the Pennekamp reef could also get a huge fine. I came close to that when heading for a red marker I thought was on the Hawk channel but was actually cutting through the reef.
Hey Sam, What a coincidence that your position at 14:56 in the video is just South of Key Colony Beach Harbour, which is where I had my own "Boat Was Gone" experience (I think I mentioned that in my Comment on that video). Glad you made out okay in this grounding. There are only two kinds of boaters who have never run aground: 1. Those who have never gone anywhere and 2. Liars.

Very odd...I just watched another channel get blown in mud flats due to strong winds but they have two guys aboard and still can't get their boat free but you didn't seem to have any problems lol. Much love from the coast of Maine 🤙🤙
Good good.. Play in the Garden like a child and gave us the advises....Nice sailors
Sam I use a mouth mount for my gropro it's an easy way to make quick pov clips while using both hands. Can talk decently with it in too. Good for skiing kiting sailing biking all the above
Cool, thanks

Apparently you used to be able to rent those stilt houses, but then they were consumed by a national park and now they're going unmaintained. That seems to happen a lot, national parks are formed in the name of "conservation", but homes are torn down and families forced out. Some of those stilthouses had families in them. Why does a park extend so far offshore anyway, super odd
Gumnt. They gum up everything they touch
Your misadventures are very normal from my experiences. Most problems are simple and solvable.
Do you have a downhaul on the jibs, lead back to the cockpit fr a quick dousing of the sails.
The boat with the guys photographing the fish they caught looks like one if those frozen in time matrix glitches. 🧐
Thats an amazing image, a peddle bike standing upright in the middle of the sea 😂😂😂
Your best video. Sam is human too.
Be careful out there, man.
Hey Sam take those opportunities of beaching yourself to take a real nap fix it in the morning or set an alarm for your high tide, Done it many times you’re already beached what’s the worst that’s going to happen
The sailor's lament! But the luck of the Irish is with you. Good thing you stopped in Scotland for whiskey ;)
Dude, I just solo sailed from green bay, lake Michigan to Daytona beach... I'm a stout " monohull" guy . But just sold it and am going to a wharram or tri also. As of right now I'm eyeballing the die cut Mana 24 kit from wharram. A diyer like you might like that
Not a lot of tidal swing on those tide curves near Miami.
If you have radar, that can be set to alarm on collision avoidance (which would include the land). I don't think GPS can do that, though.
I love the Wharrams
Hey Sam, I’m on a month long solo sailing trip in the keys on a Catalina 25, I’m currently in long key. Would love to drop by and say hi if we’re close at some point
Maybe send Sam a email
at his address below his Instagram.
Good job being so self-reliant. They say you haven't been around unless you run a ground.
Perhaps if you had used the old fashioned kitchen timers with a long ring (I set two in order to be extra safe), you'd stay beachs. They have no "pause" settings. They just ring!
Canadian citizen buying a 40 monohull in Florida. Do I need any licenses to sail the boat that I have purchased?
Running into the Pennekamp reef could also get a huge fine. I came close to that when heading for a red marker I thought was on the Hawk channel but was actually cutting through the reef.
Great vid as always. By the way, when are you going to get a head band mount for your camera so you don't have to work single-handed?
Sam, you need to invest in a hands free mount for your phone!
Hey Sam,
What a coincidence that your position at 14:56 in the video is just South of Key Colony Beach Harbour, which is where I had my own "Boat Was Gone" experience (I think I mentioned that in my Comment on that video). Glad you made out okay in this grounding. There are only two kinds of boaters who have never run aground: 1. Those who have never gone anywhere and 2. Liars.
GOOD JOB 👍
I've been lobstering right around Grassy Key. Glad you're good my man.
