  • An attempt to uniquely capture the speed, elegance & thrill of a fast production trimaran sailed singlehanded at full speed in San Francisco Bay. Inspired by the question: "What is it like when you put the "hammer down" on that thing?" The boat is 31ft long and built in 2005 by Corsair Marine in California. The model is the F-31-1D foldable and trailerable trimaran with carbon mast, carbon boom, usable interior and 6ft head room. The boat was ahead of its time and is even by today's standards an exceptional and unmatched boat.The decklayout has been optimized for safe solo / single-handed sailing and the boat is fitted with C-Foils that provide an additional 35% righting momentum. The boat outperforms many (most) production monohulls and catamarans under 50 feet length.

    We used to have an F-31R (I think we had it from like 1999 or something into the early 2000's?). We had a taller rig on it, non-integral bowsprit, huge code zero, and modified the cockpit to add glassed in extensions on the sides of the aft deck to enable a very powerful conventional mainsheet with an extended traveler that could go a bit outboard of where the factory hull stopped. That boat screamed, but it looks like yours sits much better on those C-foils-- the lack of bouyancy in the floats was always an issue for us. Good job adapting the boat to the high-performance rig!

    Love it. I launched my F-9A in November 1993 after a 24 month build.

    This might be the best video representing the F-boat’s speed. I love the various perspectives and the music. Excellent.

    A timeless classic piece of music you have used. Bravo! It’s like water dancing off of the ama. Keep the video’s coming. Can’t wait to see your complete walk-through video of your boat to see how you have setup for single handed sailing.

    Good job Thomas. When I reach those speeds on my F9AX, I'm too stoked to venture too far from the sheets, for an emergency release... nice video

    Brilliant job Thomas! Love your video.
    (I mostly solo sail my 28R around LA and out to Catalina). Your video was quite the inspiration. Thanks! I've been toying with the idea of moving up to a 31 but was concerned it would be too much for me to solo. Food for thought.....

      If you have a solo docking, rigging and sailing routine for your 28R, you can easily apply it to a 31 and it will work, I am sure. Having the extra sail area of a 31 (especially if you get one with the "tall" mast) would likely give you a speed boost in lighter winds.

    Lovely work! I always judge speed by the length of the wake sweeping away astern.
    I long to hear the wind and sounds of the boat.

    Thanks Thomas - What is 1) the max wind speed you've experienced and 2) what would be the max speed you would theoretically feel comfortable in fully reefed?

      @thomashasch  Рік тому

      1) So far I sailed the boat "only" up to true 25 knots wind speed in SF Bay (cold dense wind) a few times. Boat speed was 19.5 kts steady with 21.3 kts peak (at slack tide) with 1st reef in the main and a small jib. Without my c-foils this would have been not safe and border-lining on dangerous. 2) By the end of this summer I will have more data (and hopefully video) on sailing under 2nd reef and small jib. I don't want to make any predictions as far as max wind and boat speed. Stay tuned to the channel I will post when I have something worth sharing.
