Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

This is a Carlos Rosario appreciation post.
This show is beautifully well done, I have rewatched episodes 1-3 again with my sister. There is so much detail. Well done to the cast and crew 👏
I've not seen the movie as I don't have / don't want to streaming tv channels.
But as far as I can see from this trailer your designs are superb in the shape and
layering of colors as well as some bold fabric prints/applications etc.
They are not necessarily traditional for the most part but because your choice of
colors in what's layered are spectacular they make sense.
I don't usually like seeing Japanese traditional costumes to be altered too much
as I used to be Noh/Kyogen actor and seen great designs of real performing
kimonos are. I applaud your effort.
Please highlight all the efforts that were made. It is really great! Sometimes us viewer cant just notice it or have any idea how difficult it is
this is all very well and good but where is the ethos and gravitas of the moral of the story and the narrative. that's the real meat. -lyrill circa.
As a Japanese I really surprised these costumes designed by not Japanese. That's accurate so much. He is so talented not only artist but also scholer, I can't imagine how much he studied. Thank you for your respect, Carlos.
i was mezmerised by the clothing much of the time and even made me have hard time concentrate on the dialogue sometimes lol
He’s so getting nominated for a outstanding costumes Emmy
I'm thinking he's a shoo-in for winner. These designs are spectacular.
Definitely why he's smiling so hard when he says his job title at the start haha. He knows he's gonna win
Yes.
Please release a gallery image of all costumes. This is art.
Absolutely! This opportunity to really admire Mr Carlos' work would be highly appreciated.
#100. post - yes exactly, it *is* art, simple as that.
+1
@@akinasukizakura its part of the visual cinematic storytelling, it sets a mood, tone and atmosphere. realism isn't always better. take for example, 60fps vs the more cinematic 24fps. 60 looks more realistic but it feels weird. or for another example, if a character has just experienced loss and they were trying to convey their sadness on screen, would it be better storytelling if they were in a bright, sunny garden with birds chirping or under overcast clouds and rain.
Carlos Rosario did a magnificent job in creating all the Japanese customs for Shogun. He truly deserves credit & recognition for such brilliant job.
Google it - Taiga drama, the same thing...
If he doesn’t win multiple awards for best costume design, we riot.
The whole cast and even the entire extras have such beautiful costumes that are faithful to historical pieces, the kabuto’s crests, the kimonos and their floral patterns, the traditional colors used by clans as well as the textiles are flawless.
Ok, so bear with me on this one. The attention to detail is so spot on for this show (and speaks to the accurate portrayal of the period in question) that there's even the presence of some Indic/Mughal-esque brocade in the costumes: the brocade strip on the neck and parts of the front breast of Lord Toranaga's jinboari at 2:08, and also the brocade robe you see at 2:42. This makes sense since the Mughal world (via the Portuguese and eventually the Dutch East India Company) unofficially traded goods with Japan beginning at the end of the 16th century-so much so that Japanese porcelain and lacquerware became costly status items in South Asia. Conversely, textiles such as printed calico/chintz (sarasa fabric), as well wool/silk carpets, were imported to Japan commencing around the 16th-17th centuries (and later). The scholar Yumiko Kamada has written about the presence of Deccani carpets in Japan, which were/are still used to decorate floats in the Kyoto Gion Festival. Anyway, long story short, fantastic accuracy!
I'm so happy costume designers are starting to get a lot more credit for how much they bring to a production.

I have not seen costumes and wardrobe this awe-inspiring, this phenomenal, since Ngila Dickson’s work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
It really goes to show how much better shows like these can feel with proper care put into the costuming. No more biker jacket Vikings, please T^T
Please, please, please that they produce a coffee table book of these costumes…. And a website showing at least a few dozen of them.
yes!
Yabushige has the most drip in a show full of great costumes
with the exception of Tornuagas black and gold battle armor which he hasn't used.
Yet.
True. Apart from the costumes, I can't quite understand why, but I'm kinda loving Yabushige
@@noorlight-sz7im He just seems like a genuinely cool guy to hang out with
He isn't really evil, just trying to survive
@@PsycordeI mean, he did boil a man alive. That aside, he does seem fun to have a beer with
His character reminded me of sandor clegane.
That's exactly how I saw Yabushige: a total rock star!
The dude nailed it PERFECTLY!
They really need to make more historically accurate shows like this on different cultures, stuff like this is some of the most interesting shows/movies to watch when they’re done right.
this show is 10/10 its so perfect and its because of hiroyuki
I hope he earns an Emmy for this work.
I absolutely SWOONED over the costumes in every single episode! The fabrics, the attention to detail. Incredible!
The costume design in this show is phenomenal ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ .
Wow, the effort they made for the costumes was incredible. Every time I watched a characters in Kimono in previous historical Japanese movies/shows had been somehow odd to me. But I have never disturbed by the costumes, their behavior and posture at all.
The way people move in 1600s and Edo period was completely different from nowadays Japanese. The Kimono itself made our way of move and posture.
I think everyone can try the proper way of move in old days once people wear real Kimono.
This show is not just gorgeous but fascinating in every detail - I have to restrain myself from pausing at every scene to look at the costuming. I want a 10 hour special going into every detail please!
Also, Sanada is so handsome and mesmerising I stop breathing every time he is on screen. Give him the Emmy now!
This serie deserve multiple Oscars.
It’s not a movie, so they’d get Emmy’s instead
@@TheMan21892And they will!
@@TheMan21892 Thanks I didn't remember what is was called.
@@thomaschaumeil3878Too many accolades for entertainment industry as it is, not enough high-profile recognition for real-life heroes who save lives or tackle real world poverty.
lol what? You wanna give some Emmys to firemen and nurses? What is this random and wildly unrelated virtue signal?@@ssotkow
Ugh this show would've been a dream for me when I was really deep into costume design as a teen. It's astonishing.
The sets & costume designs have been incredible. The scale of the production is massive, you can totally see how Shōgun is FX's bigger production yet.
The costumes are all gorgeous. I’m almost in disbelief because it’s too good.
I'm very happy to be able to recreate Japanese history.
Honestly the costumes caught my eye through the whole show. What an expert!
The costumes in the original series were fantastic, especially those worn by Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga. But the costumes on this series here have surpassed the original by far in my opinion. Phenomenal work.
some of the best costume design i have ever seen and we are only 3 episodes in...insane. He has already displayed such an insane difference narratively through social structures. dont even get me started on the armor. Every single one is gorgeous.
It's telling just how excited the people at FX are about this show, they've produced so much more explanation on the minutia of this production than basic promotion on most TV shows I've seen. I think this is gonna be one for the history books.
Probably the best series in 5 years or more.
Just the other day while watching the 2nd episode I said to my gf that next to the beautiful cinematography, the costumes are absolute stunning and totally draw you into the set time and scenery.
An absolute magnificient tv series, trough and trough!
I love the costumes in this movie.
I'm Japanese and used to have a hobby of wearing kimonos.
Thank you for expressing Japanese culture so beautifully.
I sometimes wore Kimono'Komon.
But now I'm learning more about fashion from this movie.
Fumi is so beautiful, I can't take my eyes off her!
Mariko's kimonos are to die for ❤
I am already thinking multimple emmy awards for this show
Yabushige's outfit is by far my favorite! The way the black feathers are placed and contrasts with the brighter colors is so eye catching. Amazing work team!
This show needs to have a museum and a lot of Emmys.
THank you for using some colour. I'm tired of everything medieval being portrayed as black and brown. Although it could have even more colour, this is a step in the right direction
These works create the illusion that they are still happening somewhere in this world. Because contemporary artists are making things that fuse the past with the present. I respect them from the bottom of my heart.
I would be happy if everyone could learn about the true history and culture of Japan through this work. Past Hollywood productions did not understand the Japanese aesthetic sense. And he didn't use money to express Japanese culture.
from japan🙏
I respect that you understand Japanese and Japanese kimono very well, even more than Japanese people.
I am in love with the show. Thank for sharing these behind the scenes stories. I really appreciate all the work that is being done to keep this show as authentic as possible.
Same costumes as NHK Taiga dramas in existence for 60 years lol. Not much effort at all, just so hyped as it is something promoted by westerners or directed towards westerners
These are some of the best costumes that i have seen in a tv show since GOT.
Carlos really understood the challenge that was brought before him. He truly made some memorable costumes that brought the characters to life in a big way!
The intricacy of all the costumes on the show, especially those that are worn by the noble characters contributed a huge chunk to the authencity of the show. Even a character like Ishido had my eyes glued on the screen because his kimonos were just so exquisite. It will be a joke if this team doesn't win at the Emmys.
This level of hard work and pure creativity must surely be awarded the highest honour! 🌸
Truly incredible.
Costumes in this show make every scene very enjoyable.
Really enjoying these behind the scenes
Shogun is without a doubt my newest favorite show
Been waiting quite a while for this kind of quality

Mr. Rosario, you have something to be proud of!! Great work, sir!
They did such a good job the costumes look like works of art. Adds so much to making there production authentic vibes. They should be very proud of themselves good job.
This was immaculately made, just fantastic 🔥🔥
My fave is Yabu's feather vest
Agreed. He's also my favourite performance so far - a fully realized individual.
An incredible job. I hope you get rewards for your work.
the costumes are just stunning in this show
All the costumes were really stunning. The design were really cool, the attention to detail is so wonderful..
The costumes were outstanding. Every single one is exquisite. Kudos to Carlos and his team for the thousands of hours of hard work they put in - it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The characterisation, emphasis on minute details and the culture representation tells how amazing this show’s gonna be
❤❤❤
Already loved the three eps
so much of the costume designing for me, personally, is to set your mind into that universe you're being presented. i thought carlos did an absolutely brilliant job, in this aspect, for just now i'm getting an idea of how historically accurate the costume design was. congratulations!
The costumes are the whole reason i watched the show!! Outstanding work😍
Everything about this production seems to be a labour of love... and it shows
Beautiful costumes ✨
So many streaming shows and movies recently have cut budgets when it comes to costumes and i am so glad Shogun did the opposite, as a costume lover and someone with a high regard for Japanese art, the costumes immediately caught my eye. There really is no understating how much they add to a story like this; Shogun would not have been the same without Carlos and his team.
The costumes , for detail that went into each piece absolutely amazing , just stunningly beautiful. Mr Carlos, did that !
You can really tell a lot of love went into this series. Really amazing work, and especially all the costume designers, writers and actors did such an amazing job.
definitely winning a lot of best wardrobe awards, this coming awards season.
This man is genius! Absolutely stunningly beautiful costumes. He and his team deserve every award that I’m sure will be coming their way!
This series is truly amazing, I have read all of James Clavells books, and this series feels like the book. Kudos for having it in Japanese and the costumes, sets, actors, writing and everything is unreal. I see Gai-Jin coming up as season 2!
I feel the same thing about this show as I felt about the book and the 80’s series: i wish it did not end.
I hope they win an emmy or multiple awards at least. Such phenomenal acting by all the actors. This is also such a tasteful way to "westernize" or adapt a time period from another culture to make it more palatable to the western audience. You don't sacrifice the story or aesthetic at all but make subtle changes or shift the storytelling model to where anyone, anywhere can watch it and be immersed in that time. I love it and kudos to the team for utilizing japanese teams as well for their expertise to help bring the show to life.
Fantastic show. Each costume was a feast for the eyes. Details, patterns, colors, texture all were beautiful & breathtaking.
I would like to see a costume exhibition for “SHOGUN” I want to see the real thing up close!😊
Honestly want every episode of this show to be uploaded all at once. It’s great to see a time period one that’s far past my generation, and the performances from the actors/actresses are top notch.
The costumes are amazing, impressive in every way and equal to Game of Thrones
Beautiful costumes. Well done Carlos and your team.👍❤
Costume designer is killing it
Absolutely. beautiful. A little over the top, but not in a bad way. The designer and his team definitely did their research.
fantastic job on these costumes!
Stunning costumes!
I just love Mariko too - she is *gorgeous!* Japanese women are so lovely!
I hope that other productions take inspiration from the work you guys did on the costumes and outfits. The most historically accurate outfits I've seen in Years.
Carlos a creative genious! Super amazing person! 🎉
I can’t remember any better costume and wardrobe design in any other shows or movies. Not even the Lord of The Rings saga, and I’m huge fan of
Amazing team worked on this project. Congratulations to all worked behind the scenes. Enjoy watching every frame of this show
Absolutely breathtaking!
Costumer designer deserves an OSCAR ...
Every piece was an ART ❤
The armors were chef's kiss
Some of the best costumes in media!
This story is truly a spectacle.
I watched the 1980 edition starring Richard Chamberlain.
Then I read James Clavell's book.
The Japanese have a lot of culture to teach us.
My most sincere congratulations to the entire team who are helping us learn more about this extraordinary nation.
bro has hiroyuki proud.. that speaks volume, actually one of the things i say to friends in order to watch the show was "look at the costume design"
absolutely legendary work. i am infinitely mesmerized by all the costumes and all the different patterns and materials. i want to see them all. all at once
Everything about this movie is amazing!
absolutely incredible work
