Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

So many Japanese had been fed up with Japan-related films portrayed by Hollywood in which main Japanese roles were played by English speaking Chinese or Korean actors and actresses for a long time. They don't know Japanese culture, language and even the way Japanese carry themselves. So not only most of those films had seemed like awkward parodies to Japanese people, but also Japanese had felt annoyed to see those "fake Japan" spreading around the world.
That's why this Shogun seems promising.

Hear, hear!! ... My friend Roger Busque, one of the shop set construction foremen (who also was the same for Shogun's competition "Avatar: The Last Airbender", incidentally, dropping on Netflix this next week), told me, by the time his crew were finished building the innumerable quantity of shoji screens they constructed for Shogun, that if they saw or had to make any more (even though they were very proud of what they created), it would be way too soon. Apparently those shoji screens especially, in terms of their decoration are just immaculate and very authentic. Can't wait enough for this series premiere...

Right on. Still, i can't help but wonder why they aren't... FILMING IT IN JAPAN. Don't get me wrong. i love Canada. I've neve been to BC, but of anywhere in Canada, it's probably the best place to film a story set in a land that's THOUSANDS OF MILES (or thousands of kilometers) AWAY. At least they're both pacific, right?
I remember, after that horrible earthquake, a few months later something floated onto BC beaches. Like some logs or something like that. But COVERED in deep sea creatures native to the wesetern pacific. So when you think about it like that, BC is practically Japan.

It's a small detail that even Japanese natives may not understand, though they may subconsciously intuit it when it is missing. If you watch the documentary "Kingdom of Dreams and Madness" about the making of the animated film Wind Rises, director Hayao Miyazaki advises his animators on the difference between the way people bowed during the 1930s era vs today. There's a subtle difference in the way they hold the bow that is period-authentic. And for something set during the medieval period, *everything* must be on point or else it will immediately break immersion for those who know what they're looking for.
I think that just a decade or so ago, a western production would not have cared so much to get these details right, but audiences are becoming more and more discerning and informed (and international), and quality has risen to match expectations. Really excited for this show!

Think of it like reading Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher series but grounded in reality. THAT said, I so look forward to watching this that I bought the whole book series again to reread and relive the thrill of the books. For that alone FX, you have my gratitude...best of luck and success with this series!

I really got into all the Taiga dramas and have learned a lot about Japan's history. I'm really looking forward to this adaptation of Shogun and will watch it with a critical eye. Ms Akiko Kobayahsi said a truth that today's people and the people back then had different bodies, language, etc. I'm happy she recognizes that and gets this into the production.

It's always been a dream of mine to live in Japan for a few years and get the chance to experience the people and culture firsthand. For them to be able to show the world their history in such an amazing way like the lady said they would never be able to do because they would never have such a large-budget production so it is really great that the producers and FX are doing the right thing and doing everything they can including casting and working so hard to make sure their being authentic to the place, time, and culture.

@@gghelis fair enough :) perhaps the trailer is only showing the end. They are making her out to be a more constant warrior literally rather than mentally or emotionally. This will be a huge detour and it seems is meant to sideline Blackthorne into a more timid character. This is a classic Disney stamp. Btw I hope these trailers are dishonest and that I am completely wrong on everything. 🙏🏽

@nthegaslight Did you read the book? I mean, I didn't count the scenes they appear in, but she's comparable to Blackthorne in amount of "screen time" and influence on the plot, both of them being behind Toranaga who's the main driving force of the story. Their relationship is much less prominent, compared to the old show. That fighting scene doesn't end up like she's Rey from Star Wars, far from it.
Edit: got a little too spoilery there, fixed.

This made me re-watched the Bluray version of the original Shogun miniseries from 1980. The Japanese cast there were truly excellent. The legendary Toshiro Mifune plays Lord Toronaga and Yoko Shimada was perfect as Lady Mariko. Sadly both have passed away, RIP. Richard Chamberlain was cast as John Blackthorne (he won a Golden Globe for this role). In the original TV broadcast, the Japanese characters spoke in Japanese and there were no subtitles. Also, I think it was filmed entirely in Japan.
