I am so devastated that Levar Burton has morphed into this angry, hateful man with an enormous chip on his shoulder. I grew up listening to him on Reading Rainbow. I viewed him as a mentor, teacher, inspirational, and kind. He inspired me to grow and thrive. I am hurt he has been harboring hate for people who loved him, the little kids like me of yesterday who never saw anything but an uplifting storyteller who helped us navigate childhood.

I can imagine I would find out being a descendant of anyone who committed those kinds of atrocities would upset anyone including myself. The show is called Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Gates. It airs on PBS. Guys, I've got to tell you I have learned so so much from that show. It is real, numerous celebrities have gone on the show, they test their DNA and he has a professional team that traces your geneology. It's a wonderful show. I think you'll find it facinating.
I mean, there is probably near enough a 100% chance that the descendants of slaves from the transatlantic trade were caught and sold into slavery by Africans... Maybe those slave trading nations should be paying reparations.... At this point in time, reparations for the Transatlantic slave trade victims is a crazy idea... And it definitely can't be done fairly based on racial grounds... Not all commercial slave owners in the US were white (the vast majority were probably white, but even one arguably messes with basing it on race), not all black or white people in the US now are descended from slaves or slave owners... Also, some are related to both, which messes with even more thought out schemes based on ancestry... People descended from slave owners didn't necessarily keep any of the wealth their ancestors had... There are all sorts of issues... Slavery isn't even necessarily a huge indicator of who ended up being rich or poor now... Although some of the factors that are indicators may have happened as a result of racism, that has roots in the slavery... You could argue that some solutions to that have been paid into already though... I don't know... There are just too many problems with this sort of stuff though... It even has potential to increase racial tensions...

I'm actually a big fan of Professor Henry Louis Gates' PBS show, Finding Your Roots, because what he and his team unearth is often fascinating and extremely moving for his guests. But I watched both shows when they were broadcast, with Angela Davis and Levar Burton, and was surprised by their shock at finding out something about their ancestors that upset and disgusted them, and that they found so very hard to accept. WTF?! They're both well-educated, so they really should have known that they wouldn't be "pure bloods." None of us are. That's the beauty of the human race, no matter how it came about. So, big thumbs down to both of them, for their own racism and intolerance. I hope the experience gave them lots to ponder and think about, and perhaps they emerged a little less prejudiced and a little more tolerant. And like most of the guests on that show, thankful and grateful to all their ancestors, without whom they would not exist.

I've been involved in Genetic Genealogy for 15 years. Never saw an American with 100% Sub Saharan African. I've seen several pure Europeans. It should be understood that people have always developed relationships with others for their own reasons irrespective of laws or whether others approve or dissaprove.

I've always loved Lavar Burton, I basically grew up with him... I watched Roots as a child, he was the beloved reading rainbow guy, Next Generation... The show is called Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Gates. It airs on PBS. Guys, I've got to tell you I have learned so so much from that show. It is real, numerous celebrities have gone on the show, they test their DNA and he has a professional team that traces your geneology. It's a wonderful show. I think you'll find it facinating.

At this point in time, reparations for the Transatlantic slave trade victims is a crazy idea... And it definitely can't be done fairly based on racial grounds... Not all commercial slave owners in the US were white (the vast majority were probably white, but even one arguably messes with basing it on race), not all black or white people in the US now are descended from slaves or slave owners... Also, some are related to both, which messes with even more thought out schemes based on ancestry... People descended from slave owners didn't necessarily keep any of the wealth their ancestors had... There are all sorts of issues... Slavery isn't even necessarily a huge indicator of who ended up being rich or poor now... Although some of the factors that are indicators may have happened as a result of racism, that has roots in the slavery... You could argue that some solutions to that have been paid into already though...

I'm actually a big fan of Professor Henry Louis Gates' PBS show, Finding Your Roots, because what he and his team unearth is often fascinating and extremely moving for his guests. But I watched both shows when they were broadcast, with Angela Davis and Levar Burton, and was surprised by their shock at finding out something about their ancestors that upset and disgusted them, and that they found so very hard to accept. WTF?! They're both well-educated, so they really should have known that they wouldn't be "pure bloods." None of us are. That's the beauty of the human race, no matter how it came about. So, big thumbs down to both of them, for their own racism and intolerance. I hope the experience gave them lots to ponder and think about, and perhaps they emerged a little less prejudiced and a little more tolerant. And like most of the guests on that show, thankful and grateful to all their ancestors, without whom they would not exist.

I've been involved in Genetic Genealogy for 15 years. Never saw an American with 100% Sub Saharan African. I've seen several pure Europeans.

I've always loved Lavar Burton, I basically grew up with him... I watched Roots as a child, he was the beloved reading rainbow guy, Next Generation... He always seemed so sweet, humble and kind in interviews. I never cared that he was black, to me I just saw a good person. This is actually, genuinely painful. This man that I was so fond of is gonna automatically hate me, without knowing anything about me, just because I'm white. That hurts my heart.
He's definitely a great actor. He had all of us white people fooled lol.
We are all so genetically connected now that racism is even more ridiculous. Let's embrace our connections and love and respect each other! If I had black ancestors, as a white person, I would embrace it fully!
