I am black and I like to arrive places early. I will wait in my car to not inconvenience hosts/others, but I will be on time for the event/job. I worked in healthcare, and replacement shfits always ran late, it is beyond rude; it shifts a huge burden of work onto the folks that have already completed their shifts.

Oh lord you are correct. I had a young woman tell me I needed to go "get her money". She had opted for paper checks to be mailed to her house, so whenever there was a federal holiday, the same week as payday, she would get her check late.... she came to work ready to fight someone. She got sent home and later fired for her behavior in the store. But you are exactly right.
3:56 my grandma always said “arrive when you want, but the meal will be served at 1:00” and that damn meal line STARTED at 1:00 on the dot. Why? Because she had 8 children, 22 grandchildren and over 20 great grandchildren. She knew everybody had other sides of the families they had to go to that day, so SHE was being polite for those that had other obligations during the day, so she served that damn meal on time, for 70+ years!!!
Both my parents told us dinner is at 6:00 PM don't be late why ? We're a family of five boys and we taught be grateful to God for the food we receive daily. Plus our mother is an amazing cook.

Not for something like this...if you love your family, one incident is not enough to cut someone off. Life is too short. I'm not agreeing with her. But you just don't tell your son and daughter in law "goodbye forever" for being late to a Thanksgiving dinner. Like she claims, it was her understanding that the time was not that strict (I know our family is grateful and laid back, sometimes the cooking is done while everyone is there having fun and being grateful). Thanksgiving is not just about the food. My first concern would have been whether they were okay or not. But after letting her know how they prefer to operate, she should make the adjustments and do different the next time...or just decline the invitation.

It's a real problem. I am a Senior Team Lead/Supervisor and it is constant. If your log in time is 10:00am, to be on the phone and you ALWAYS log in at 1005, or later, you are late. I have someone that does it almost every shift.

Ever since my Grandmother passed away, I took over our family Thanksgiving cooking. It’s hard work, I have to start cooking the day before in order to have everything ready to eat by Thanksgiving dinner. It’s actually also very expensive to buy all the extra food. I’m up Thanksgiving morning before daybreak to finish the rest of the cooking so we can eat by 1:00 pm. I do everything, all my family have to do is come and eat. I chose to do it that way and enjoy taking care of my family. It makes me happy to see everyone sitting around the table eating.Now hopefully everyone is there at the time to eat but if not we are eating. The plates will be set for the ones that aren’t there but after all the work I’ve done, I’m not leaving all that food sitting on the table getting cold waiting on someone that didn’t make it on time, dinner is at 1:00 pm whether you’re there or not and I am not being an asshole, and for goodness sakes definitely not a white supremest. I’m sure there’s a lot out there that cook for their families feel the same as i do about dinner time regardless of what color you are. when the late ones show up they can eat. Thanks for being of color AND calling this out. Growing up in the 70s and 80s in the Midwest it was a stereotype I heard that black people are lazy and never on time that my black friends had the misfortune of working against. And now we have people expressing that lower value of punctuality is a cultural norm of the black community that the rest of cultures should accommodate and if not it’s labeled white supremacy? She’s not the only person I’ve seen express this. It’s scary to hear she promotes this ideology at workshops. When dinner is served at noon, you show up at 11, since you need to get all the hellos and how have you beens ‘out of the way’ and help set the table and such.

When we host meals/get togethers....I always make it clear... For example- I tell everyone it starts at 2, and we'll eat at 4. That way they know showing up anytime between 2-4 is acceptable for socializing, and that the meal starts at 4. We will be eating at 4. If you show up after 4, it's taken to mean you aren't there to eat, just socialize. If the food is still out, they are welcome to join everyone, but if it's already put away, I won't be warming them up a plate of food.
Thank you! Every family is different no matter the dynamics. I always feel bad if the Holiday meal isn't delivered as close to on time as possible. It's tough to get everything ready on time for a crowd. If any family member or guest arrives after the set time, then they fill their bellies when they get there. If the food is hot and ready to eat then YOU EAT! No one is shamed if they are late. And then we move one to other stuff.....dessert perhaps!

3:56 my grandma always said “arrive when you want, but the meal will be served at 1:00” and that damn meal line STARTED at 1:00 on the dot. Why? Because she had 8 children, 22 grandchildren and over 20 great grandchildren. She knew everybody had other sides of the families they had to go to that day, so SHE was being polite for those that had other obligations during the day, so she served that damn meal on time, for 70+ years!!!
Both my parents told us dinner is at 6:00 PM don't be late why ? We're a family of five boys and we taught be grateful to God for the food we receive daily. Plus our mother is an amazing cook.

Not for something like this...if you love your family, one incident is not enough to cut someone off. Life is too short. I'm not agreeing with her. But you just don't tell your son and daughter in law "goodbye forever" for being late to a Thanksgiving dinner. Like she claims, it was her understanding that the time was not that strict (I know our family is grateful and laid back, sometimes the cooking is done while everyone is there having fun and being grateful).
Thanksgiving is not just about the food. My first concern would have been whether they were okay or not. But after letting her know how they prefer to operate, she should make the adjustments and do different the next time...or just decline the invitation.

It's a real problem. I am a Senior Team Lead/Supervisor and it is constant. If your log in time is 10:00am, to be on the phone and you ALWAYS log in at 1005, or later, you are late. I have someone that does it almost every shift.

Ever since my Grandmother passed away, I took over our family Thanksgiving cooking. It’s hard work, I have to start cooking the day before in order to have everything ready to eat by Thanksgiving dinner. It’s actually also very expensive to buy all the extra food. I’m up Thanksgiving morning before daybreak to finish the rest of the cooking so we can eat by 1:00 pm. I do everything, all my family have to do is come and eat. I chose to do it that way and enjoy taking care of my family. It makes me happy to see everyone sitting around the table eating.Now hopefully everyone is there at the time to eat but if not we are eating. The plates will be set for the ones that aren’t there but after all the work I’ve done, I’m not leaving all that food sitting on the table getting cold waiting on someone that didn’t make it on time, dinner is at 1:00 pm whether you’re there or not and I am not being an asshole, and for goodness sakes definitely not a white supremest. I’m sure there’s a lot out there that cook for their families feel the same as i do about dinner time regardless of what color you are. when the late ones show up they can eat.

Thanks for being of color AND calling this out. Growing up in the 70s and 80s in the Midwest it was a stereotype I heard that black people are lazy and never on time that my black friends had the misfortune of working against. And now we have people expressing that lower value of punctuality is a cultural norm of the black community that the rest of cultures should accommodate and if not it’s labeled white supremacy? She’s not the only person I’ve seen express this. It’s scary to hear she promotes this ideology at workshops. Also, I have learned to tune out a narcissistic black lady when she starts clapping in between words because she’s no longer operating from a place of logic and reason and just can’t handle that others don’t agree with her.

When we host meals/get togethers....I always make it clear...
For example- I tell everyone it starts at 2, and we'll eat at 4. That way they know showing up anytime between 2-4 is acceptable for socializing, and that the meal starts at 4. We will be eating at 4. If you show up after 4, it's taken to mean you aren't there to eat, just socialize. If the food is still out, they are welcome to join everyone, but if it's already put away, I won't be warming them up a plate of food.

Thank you! Every family is different no matter the dynamics. I always feel bad if the Holiday meal isn't delivered as close to on time as possible. It's tough to get everything ready on time for a crowd. If any family member or guest arrives after the set time, then they fill their bellies when they get there. If the food is hot and ready to eat then YOU EAT! No one is shamed if they are late. And then we move one to other stuff.....dessert perhaps!

If it was a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, it's turkey, sides, pie etc. Someone has been cooking for hours for it all to be ready at a specific time. The food becomes less appealing the longer it sits.
